I stayed with my XM4 since I thought the XM5 was not improved enough and even had a drawback by not being able to fold it. I would like to see a comparison to the Sennheiser Momentum 4’s that are due out any day. I’ve heard they’re better in sound quality to the XM5, though not as good with noise cancellation and costs $50 less than the XM5.

I partially regret buying it, it is too big for my head, i did some DIY, and it fits now, but still, it looks silly. I loved the XM3 bass heavy sound, it almost completly dissapeared from the XM5. The case is really big, although the new Sennheiser momentum 4 has the same design and case...
I bought a momentum 3, it has more bass, more soundstage, it feels more open? But i heard the momentum 4 sound signature is somehat flat, it doesnt have the bass the 3 has. I understand that audiophiles love flat sound, but these are bluetooth consumer headphones, it should be fun to listen to. Altought this is subjective, i like the momentum 3s
For the price of the XM5 in my country, i am not satified, it cost 155K in my currency, while the momentum 114K, and it sounds better, but the features are better on the XM5.
I think the controls are perfect, it is responsive, i like how the music doesnt stop on changing ANC to Ambient, it just beeps while you can still hear everything. The swiping also works great. I really miss it while using the Sennheiser. If it would fit better i think i would be satisfied.
I tried the bose as well it was comfortable, but i felt like it lacked bass, that is why i choose the Sennheiser over the bose.

Both are fine. XM4 is more compact...softer edges on cans...also (imo) the headband was a serious downgrade in ergonomics; xm4 had flat band but the xm5's had this subpar rod shape. My vote: "no thanks". I returned my xm5's, and kept my xm4's. (I hope xm6 goes back to the superior xm4 design. Luckily the xm4 were still a great audio quality competitor to the xm5's.

I have a very different opinion, I don't believe the most important quality on my headphones is the size of the carrying case. I think the most important thing is the sound quality, ANC, and overall fit and comfort, witch in my opinion the xm5 improved all of these aspects from the xm4. It would be nice for the xm5 to be foldable and have a smaller case, but if you have the extra money I would say the xm5 is more worth your money than the xm4.

One of the big advantages for the XM5s for me was that the noise cancelling didn't make me feel sick... yes you read that right; noise cancelling in Sony's XM4s and other brands (most notably Sennheiser Momentum) made me feel nauseated/disorientated and this was just trying them out in the shop! The XM5s have been the first high-end headphones where the noise cancellation didn't do that. This had been an issue which had stopped me from buying any headphones for a number of years.

“Super-low sounds below 100Hz are blocked out more through the WH-1000XM5, as are midrange and high-pitched frequencies. Sony’s XM5 headphones do way more to block out unpredictable sounds like a mechanical keyboard or slamming cabinets than the XM4 headphones. One thing I want to add is that Sony’s noise canceling with helping with my autism has helped with my behavior issues a little bit. The noise cancellation has helped my brain basically reset from sensory overload and helped it recover a lot more. I think it’s because the headphones are the same shape, as what we called gun phones, which are headphones that are used when people shoot guns. This shape really helps, especially with the way my ears are. I love how soft the leather is and this is gonna sound strange but as a blind person, I love the smell of the leather actually. Like the smell of a new Plastic leather book cover it’s like the thick plastic type of leather used in three ring binders except the softer version. Honestly gives you a lot of cushion and that is my favorite part of them. This isn’t me just praising them because they worked well for me, this is me telling you, how they’ve basically helped a lot. They’ve changed my life! Just kidding. But for somebody who uses them for a medically diagnosed disability they have really helped my brain decompress, which is really helped with my overall behavior in general. It’s helped with my stress level. I think if I could find the right words in a less long-winded explanation, I would, tell Sony thank you for making a pair of headphones that works well for people with autism and help them. I really think more people with autism should have access to sound or Sony if you’re looking for not bone conduction but traditional headphones. Honestly, they won’t regret it.what all see if we can get medical companies to recognize the need for these kind of headphones as an actual need for people with disabilities such as autism so that people can get the help they need. And the devices they need. I was lucky that I was financially able to pay for it but what about other people that can’t and can’t work and need this kind of thing? I guess they’re left out in the cold where the current system is. Forgot to say another way that they’ve held in another reason I’ve noticed it is because I’ve started listening to music a lot more again and singing a lot more again. I think the reason that I hadn’t been listening to a lot of music or singing as much is because, I have been more stressed out and wasn’t mentally able to concentrate on anything other than my stress. I still end up concentrating on my stress, but not nearly as much and that is allowed me to be much happier to the point where I am doing things that I haven’t done in a long time like singing again of my own free will and wanting to record my music and play my music again. I also want to say thanks to Sony for bringing back my love of music again or at least helping me recognize how much I love music.

The long-wear comfort is excellent and the sound is great once you tweak the EQ to your liking, however, I wish Sony would do a software update wherein the strength of the noise cancellation can be controlled instead of it always being set to "adaptive" - this is just being nitpicky since the NC on the these are great out of the box for regular use (will be testing them out on a flight soon).
Overall, generally happy with my pair since I've been wanting to own something from this series for a few years now and my only complain would be how they aren't as portable. In terms of use, I've been wearing the XM5s everywhere except the gym (no IPX rating) - I'm most probably going to stick with my Airpods Pro for this since they're more portable, comfortable, and practical for that type of activity anyway.

They are comfortable, especially my head and ears are on the bigger side and I don't have any issues with them. Heyy! Great comment! I'm thinking in getting the xm5, I didnt own the xm4, but I tried them once.
After hours at looking at comments my main concern is the lack of the option to control the strenght on the ANC, is that a big deal breaker for you, or do you reckon it is barely noticeble after updates?
My main goal for the purchase is the ANC itself so Im wondering if I should go for the xm4 instead because of it?
Also I wear glasses, it might be a factor due to the different shape cups.
Thank you hopefully someone can help out.

I just bought these yesterday. In the store they sound great. At home they learn how to sound good. My biggest issues are the ear cup size, the head band size, and the ear pads. The price also. I paid with tax 446. These should be no more that 299 in my opinion because of the materials. I get the vegan leather and recycled plastic but I can say that my XM3s are the best headphones I have ever owned. The XM4s are ok. They sound a little muddy but are almost like the XM3s. The XM5s beat the Bose 700 hands down on noise cancelling and sound. I still haven't decided on keeping the XM5s but they do sound better than they did yesterday.

I feel the XM4's stereo separation feels like the objects are a bit distant. But in XM5, objects feel a bit near, which I think is because of 30mm drivers. XM4's audio output feels like the spectrum has been widened. Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

I sold my XM4 to get the XM5 and I am not sure if I regret my decision. The main advantage of the XM5 is that it is FAR better than the XM4 for (video)calls. The main disadvantage for me is the step back in comfort. The XM5 causes me pain on my head when I wear them for too long and I never had that with the XM4s. The XM4s also sound a bit more impactful (probably because of the bigger driver), even though the XM5 has a slightly more balanced audio profile to my ears. Also, the XM5s are a clear step back in practicality with its bigger case and lack of foldability.

I have both the XM4s and the XM5s and I also have the Airpods Max - both the ANC and sound quality of the XM5 is better than both. Design wise, I actually prefer the XM5s since folding them all the time doesnt only add time but also puts a strain on the headphones themselves. The case doesnt matter to me as they both take space in a backpack anyway.
Regarding audio quality, the XM4s in comparison sound MUDDY with heavier base too. Whoever claims that the XM4 sound better or have better ANC must be in denial

@@martyking5603 gotta be honest with you... Airpods max sounds better not because they are better in sound quality, but because they are tweaked nicely. If you adjust the EQs on the XM5s or any other Hi-fi headsets, they are most likely going to sound better than the airpods max. But if you are a apple user, forget anything I've just said, since they do have better connectivity I believe? and apple product dont support Ldac, which is one of the main features that made the sony headsets sound amazing.

"both the ANC and sound quality of the XM5 is better than both"
Having watched many reviews which showcase the ANC (where you can hear what the ANC does) XM4 nudge XM5's in terms of ANC - you could argue that they are actually better in certain scenarios, it might be personal preference but to me XM4's seem to do a better job at eliminating frequencies which I don't like. Plus XM5 don't allow for permanent ANC setting, you need to rely on AI deciding what to do when the best would be to let user set ANC to max and let it sit there.

I did a comparison between Sony XM5, Apple Air pods Max and Bowers&Wilkins Px7 S2. And at the end I ordered the B&W Px7 S2 cans as they catered my tastes the best. I was seriously disappointed about XM5 sound quality and the way the shallow pads pressed my glasses. But as it is blatantly obvious, headphones are one the most subjective pieces of tech you can find, no one should cast “the final verdict” as it’s completely up to you. What I would love see is your reaction and evaluation on the B&Ws latest offering in this regard.

I was looking for headphones that I can pack in a backpack and take to and from school with me. As a graduate student on campus from 9 am to 9 pm I wanted wireless headphones that sound good and can be packed into a backpack so I can use them while studying. The active noise canceling is a bonus.
I have not tried sennheisers (reviews are typically pretty bad for them for whatever reason). Bose doesn't sound like they have the best bass, typically people recommend sony for that. Regardless, bose tend to be quite a bit more expensive. I do have the xf4s I used to use at work, which has beyond impressed for battery life, connectivity, and noise cancelation in ear buds. I have a mdr1 headset from Sony I am currently using which sounds phenomenal. The mdr1 wire is incredibly short and it does not cone with a travel case, which means the cushions get extra pressure constantly while packed. So I am familiar with sony sound and how to tweak them as needed with eq, and the xm4s from price and functions I need seem better.

More spaciousness in the highs, too, and better imaging - especially with ANC turned off. In that regard, they’re perfect travel headphones: they do ANC well when you need it on the plane or train, and do great sound when relaxing in your quiet hotel room.

A person who is looking for new headphones. As a Jabra 85H owner, I struggle with the issues of headphones randomly turn off and on. I got used to it, BUT the biggest irritation I have is the folding. They fold as Sony XM4 and I really can not see the need for that folding. You wear the headphones on your head or around your neck. When do you need to fold them? When traveling? big deal of that little extra space. So as for me, I would gladly buy the XM5 even though I like the design of the XM4 slightly better.

Just found your channel and enjoy your detailed explanation on your review. Keep up the good work.
I wonder what happened with the Microphone in both XM4/5 as when you use for Meetings or Phone Calls I couldn't make it hear my voice over the ambient noise.
When use someone else I note all the noise they transfer to the other person whereas with my Jabra Elite 85h it doesn't.
Is there any solution and/or way to make it better.
I've for a few days now (XM4) and I love as you mentioned in the video the Noise Cancellation it's quite good and how comfortable they're in general compared in your video with the newer version I can't say they improved as folding and making them easy to carry is not their thing.
On the other hand something I dislike a bit compared to my Jabra ones is the lack of physical buttons as sometimes you're out and about with cold and stuff and only your hand can produce the gestures.

Plus, as a carpenter I wear grade 5 earmuff every day. The sound is great on the 5s, and they’re at least as comfortable and much lighter than my 3M grade 5s, which is great. The noise cancelling is incredible - much much better than my bro’s JBLs (though they were about half the price). Not sure I’d spend $500 NZD on another pair of headphones ever again, and I’m not a regular user of them, but I do appreciate the good sound and noise cancelling. I have both XM4s and XM5s, and I’m torn.
Ignoring the price (I’m fortunate enough to be able to purchase both at a substantial discount, so price isn’t a consideration), I *think* I’m coming down in favour of the 5s.
The 4s are much warmer sounding, to the point of being too warm, and the 5s are brighter and more open sounding (both with flat eq), it’s really noticeable when you A/B test them side by side (which I’m sad enough to do).
The 4s are very slightly more comfortable for me, but they’re also warmer, to the point of being sweaty on a warm day.
The 5 case is an abomination, and it is really quite hard to fit into a backpack if you already have a laptop and other daily stuff in there, but I guess you’d get used to it.
I’m summary, it’s very close, and I expect price would ultimately be the deciding factor if you had to chose between the two.

Hey Mark! I was wondering what you would recommend as an upgrade for the Jabra 85h that I own at the moment?

Here in India the xm5's launched at an special early price of 26,000INR ( roughly 295 pounds) so I had to grab them since xm4 are still selling for 230 pounds here.

So I bough the XM5's, and unfortunately, the left earcup was really anoying after 30-60 minutes of using them. It seems that my ear could touch the end of the earcup, after a time it started to hurt. I'm not a bigear person tho, had to sold them as there's no way to have your money back here in Sony Mexico.

I just got the xm4s on sale. The xm5s were primarily upgraded for features I dont plan on ever needing to use, with sound and portability being most important to me.

How would you compare sennheiser momentum 4s against XM5s?
Better price, better battery, personalized equalizers

My XM2s suddenly died after 4 years 😥 and I can't live without them. Sounds like XM4 is the go! The case is big enough, bigger is not an option.

I used QC 35II for a while, it was really good. But the sound quality was with a bit too much bass. Then I've got headphones 700, it was actually good, but then I tried XM4 at the store and it was fantastic. NC may just tiny less good as 700, but the sound and comfort is way better XM4. And I prefer the behaviour of the touch panel on the 700.
And also thanks to your channel I decided for XM4 instead the XM5 which was not worth the money compared to the XM4.

Xm5s are now £299 in all major stores in the uk (14/12/22). I’ve even seen them as low as £284. That’s a significant price drop in just a few months.

I prefer the QC45 over the 700s because they can fold and have better ANC

I'm still with the XM3. 🤷‍♂️ I'd get the 4 if given the chance to upgrade

I just picked up the XM4s for about $200~. For a deal like that it was a no brainer. Portability was a big one for me. Sound is slightly different, but not enough to warrant the extra $150 I'd have to pay. Some people ask why do the XM5s get knocked for the size of the case and portability? Because that's why you buy them. My Sennheiser HD58X are my primary at home, cost $150 and will blow any wireless headphones out of the water. I would never use wireless at my desk, so being compact and easy to carry is a big selling point.

Enjoy RUclips as much as you want but certain things (like headphones) must be tried in person.
Their are both expensive (with XM5 being bloody expensive).
That said, I tried both and, comfort wise, XM4 distance between cups and arc is a tiny bit more than XM5, so XM4 tend to push down a bit one of my ears.
This does not happen with the XM5 henceforth why I bought the newest model.
Comfort wise, I found the Bose 700 to be even better (that aforementioned distance can be lowered even more).
Sound wise ... I can't feel any difference amongst the three models. They all sound pretty good to me.
