This episode was first shown 54 years ago on wednesday July 31st 1968. Rest in peace to all the departed cast and crew of this amazing show.

I remember watching this with my mother and father in 1968. Like most 12 year old, most of our fathers fought in WW2. That's why my father found this so funny after serving in the regular army from 1939 to 1946.

The first 3 minutes in this are some of the finest in British TV history. Arthur Lowe was just superb. And that 1st studio audience to see those opening titles and their response...sublime.

I always love how they start laughing in the theme song when the British arrow recoils quickly as if they were out of their depth. Few other great countries have such humility.

Just love it - old Mainwearing ever pompous even at the beginning. He looks for all ways to elevate himself above all the others.
Thankfully Fraser’s got his measure right from the word go., Jones has his bribe ready to get his stripe !! Marvellous !!

Mainwaring: "There are no guns. We are naked. But we have one invaluable weapon in our armoury: ingenuity and improvisation."
    Fraser: "That's two."
A nice nod to Hamlet, Act 5 Scene 2.
    Hamlet: "What's his weapon?
    Osric: "Rapier and dagger".
Hamlet: "That's two of his weapons: but, well."

@@mikemorgan7893 Hi Mike, he surely was sir and it was if he never left us. To sort of replace him did David Croft bring in a Welsh speaking accent newspaper man? who called Captain Manwaring Boy o. This comedy series was Momentous and so underrated. I saw it first time round aged 8 and never tire of it and always find something funny I missed. Bless them all. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands 🤝

    Think on this...
Just under 400,000 men were in France with the BEF in 1940. Population of Britain 1940 was 45 million.
So there was one BEF/ Dunkirk vet per 112 members of the public. Almost everyone knew one.

Quite right the first world war eded with the signing of the Treaty of Versilles. in June 1919 The armistice on 11 November was an agreement to stop fighting to arrainge peace talks

The whole point is that Mainwaring could not possibly have seen any combat in 1919, whereas Wilson had served in several theatres of WW1.
As a later episode will reveal, Wilson was later commissioned, reaching the rank of captain. He therefore has the kudos over the pompous, self-appointed, ‘Captain’ Mainwaring.
