  • Follow this newbie put together 12 stained glass boxes. In this video I build the beveled glass sides and attach a mirror for the bottom. In part two I assemble the tops and attach them to the boxes.
    I welcome all tips and thoughts as I learn this craft.

    Nice video. I learned the hard way that you must seal the edges of the mirror, before you foil or lead it in. If you do not seal the mirror edge, you will get the dreaded "black rot", or in my case "green rot" that spreads into the mirror. I used nail polish to seal the edges, which is pretty quick since it dries so fast. You can also use polyurethane, but it will take longer to dry. Either water from washing, or flux seeping into the mirror coating is what causes the black or green rot on the mirror. The nail polish keeps it from seeping in.

      by the way, at my local grocery store, nail polish is not called nail polish. A nice lady explained to me I wanted clear "top coat", which is what I used :)

    The Jigs you made are just what I've been wondering how to make for a lamp project. Thanks!

      Steve L - Glad I could help :) The first couple I tried without a jig and was getting very frustrated. Necessity is the mother of invention.

    Not sure if you Iron is adjustable but the temp of your iron can make a big difference in your splattering and for your issues with flow.

    Great video, love the speed! Have you considered moving your hot iron to the right on your work space? I am a newbie, and very careful to not burn myself!!

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx  6 лет назад

      Thank you so much for watching! I really laughed out loud when I read your comment. It does make so much sense to move it. It started there because the outlet to my right was in use with my light and grinder, so I just plugged it in to my left and it just stayed there for over 2-1/2 years. I am actually getting ready to redesign that room to a dedicated craft room. I will make sure I look to moving to then. Although, It will take same getting used to :) ! Just curious if you watched part 2 also? The number of video views for part 1 is over twice as many for part 2.

    Great video (y)
    But I was wondering: Can you use the same kind of copper (or brass) tape and NOT coat it with solding?
    Or would you some stronger edging material to keep the boxes together?

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx  4 года назад

      Niels Bugge - The reason the copper foil is there is so you can solder it together. The solder is the glue that holds it together. Solder does not stick to the glass. Out of curiosity, why do you not want to cover it with solder?

    • @nielsbugge2572

      @@tomsdreamshopworx thanks for the answer. I just found your video while looking for how to make those boxes with brass edges.
      But watching a few more videos I realised that this technique is a replacement of the old toxic lead framing, so different goal.
      But it looks interesting, are you using non-lead solding, and how does the silver shine last?

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx  5 лет назад

      Gabrielle .Moon - It is copper foil. Do a search on stained glass supplies. It comes in different widths and color backs. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    hi can i use acrylic instead of glass?

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx  6 лет назад

      I would not think so. The acrylic would most likely melt with the heat of the soldering iron. There is a glue made specially for acrylic.

    Name of liquid ???

    • @tomsdreamshopworx
      @tomsdreamshopworx  3 года назад +1

      The only liquid I used was flux. It is used to prepare the copper to help the solder stick to it. It comes in both liquid and paste forms. I use paste now.
