  • How to make a glass door terrarium enclosure (and scape it too)
In this video I attempt to make a rectangular glass terrarium from scratch using 3mm glass sheets and silicone sealant. I decided on a size which is 18cm x 9cm x 12 cm ( L x D x H). I marked the glass and cut it to size using a glass cutter. Next I proceeded to silicone the edges with black silicone sealant. The glass was held in place with corner clams during the process. However I had to give time for curing in between and it took a total of 3 days to make the terrarium before it was ready for scaping. I cut the two sides in the front of the box to create the hinge door. the silicone joint at the top will act as a hinge and facilitate opening and closing of the door. I created a hardscape using lava rocks and driftwood. I kept the scaping simple keeping in mind maintenance which would not be easy considering the hinge door mechanism. I created a moss wall at the back and placed the hardscape in front of it. I added aquasoil in the bottom of the terrarium. The wall and ground was covered with moss and I proceeded with planing using my usual set of tried and tested plants namely Anubias nana, Bolbitis fern, Selaginella and Peperomia prostrata.
I also added some small lava rocks pieces in the foreground to add some detailing. Finally I gave the terrarium a thorough misting, added Springtails and closed it up.

This video has changed my life. I've been working on a set of stained glass terrariums and cutting the glass has been a reoccurring problem as my straight edge was constantly sliding, causing my knife to slip. After seeing this, I got double-sided foam tape and cutting glass is now a breeze. I'm using a bamboo skewer to break my glass as well now, and it feels far more gentle than traditional glass breakers.
I'll be scaping my terrarium soon! Can't wait.

Oh my!! You made building the glass terrarium look so easy. I have always wanted to try but was unsure that I could do a good job adding the silicone. I had no idea that corner clamps existed and will be going to get some today. I am excited to give a project like this a try. I like everything that you did to scape this, and envious that your supply of springtails is so rebust. My cultures are not doing well for some reason.🙃🤔

You are a genius. Your terrariums have reached another level. That bamboo skewer seems to work great. I used to break glass at the edge of the table. I broke many the wrong way. The suction cup as a handle is a great idea too. The terrarium looks wonderful! May I suggest a channel for you? It has mossy landscapes. The name of the channel is "Erwin Saunders". You use a lot of moss, so I thought of you.
