I'd heard this band was trying to parody Power metal.
But they do such a good job that it's more like power metal than a lot of other bands.
I sincerely hope they do more.
Fantasy power metal is so close to being a parody of itself as it is, the best way to actually parody it is to just do the same thing with everything turned up to 11.
Norpal Pretty much, yeah. Power metal has never really been a particularly serious subgenre to begin with (There's a reason Freedom Call likes to refer to the stuff they play as 'happy metal'), so parodying it is pretty easy. But it's really the best kind of parody: a sincere affectionate parody. I mean, even though they're basically playfully mocking the whole power metal thing, they've come up with a narrative, characters, costumes, and made some legitimately fun music. Just shows that they've put actual effort into the parody.
Michael Welsh Absolutely,it's the same with Steel Panther or Deathklok,parodying 80's Hair and Death Metal.We just need somebody doing something like this with Prog and Black Metal,because these genres are taking themselfs way too serious.

Michael Welsh Sabaton seems pretty serious to me and I would definitely classify them as power metal. Fantasy power metal on the other hand :D I honestly laughed really hard when I've first heard this song, the lyrics are just so... playful even though they are about an invasion and people dying :D
This is the shlockiest brick of shitty fantasy metal tropes I have ever seen. It has the silliest lyrics, the most insane premise, and some actually really grim subject matter, backed up by some damn good guitar work. 10/10, listen to this every single day.
That's much of the point. Gloryhammer parodies fantasy metal tropes while still being damn good metal at the same time. It's genius, really.

In that case, here are a few unicorn facts you might be interested to hear:
-Unicorns were actually said to act wild and vicious towards anyone who wasn't of the absolute highest level of purity. Those who were of such purity were treated gently and kindly.
-A creature in Mediterranean mythology called the shadhavar looked like a unicorn but it was a gazelle with a single horn rather than a horse. The shadhavar was said to lure animals near it by raising its horn to the wind to create a flutelike song, then viciously attack and eat the animals who came near.
-Sorry, I'm a big nerd for mythology, so I had to infodump ^^'
Fun fact: the myth of unicorns began in the late Roman era when somone described a Rhino very very badly. The early Christian Church believed the mistaken discription to be an entirly diffrent real creature, and thus we have the supprizingly brutal and violent but beatuifle unicorn.

Honestly I know they are a parody of power metal and stuff with the lyrics...but they know how to play. The music is damn good. They have it down. It is a good power metal song, with great tempo and sound with a great hook. So much better than a lot of bands that take themselves way too seriously

Z04RD it's a parody of power metal like how Dethklok is a parody of death metal. UIoD was originally written as a single song to be funny, but they ended up making a whole album out of it.

One of the things I love most about this band is the storyline in their albums. I jam out to all their songs like crazy at work while my imagination takes over. 🤘🤘
The drums: on fire.
The guitar: shooting lightning.
Metal level: enough to make steel plate armor for a legion or two to take back Dundee.
I can't believe I didn't realize this before.... but listen to the bass kicks during the verses. In the chorus, it's a staccato fast kick beat 1-2-3-4. HOWEVER, during the verse, it's the same staccato beat, but missing the fourth kick, so 1-2-3-blank.
And in doing so, does it not remind one of a galloping horse, or unicorn? O_O!!!!

It's a staple of power metal in general, but kind of fitting for this song in particular. And it's not really missing the fourth kick since that'd be three 16th notes with a 16th note pause in every beat, but instead it's a traditional galloping rhythm with an 8th note followed by two 16th notes.
Also, staccato is an interesting word to use, my brain is melting while I'm trying to think what legato drumming would sound like.
It's a common technique called galloping if you're talking about the bass. If you mean the bass drum, then yes, it's insanely hard
Christopher Bowes is a genuinely talented songwriter. Sure his stuff is usually pretty silly, but the music speaks for itself. This, To the End of the World, Wooden Leg Part 2, Rise of the Chaos Wizards, The Fires of Ancient Cosmic Destiny, 1741... The man knows how to make something sound good.

there are naysayers who claim power metal is a joke and i would say to them, how dare you, this is a much maligned yet serious genre.
I don't know if you were aiming to make people laugh with this, but damn, I laughed and loved every second of it.
coming from one of their band members its a parody of power metal but also they feel power metal isnt fun anymore with all too many bands being "pseudo progressive" and being very sombre.

That's the beauty of these guys, it's epic, it's awesome, it brings back the "I'm not going to take myself seriously" mentality to the scene. Which I find refreshing, not to mention what's more metal than undead unicorn, with hell raining from the sky? That's right not much else.
