CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mark (Jesse Eisenberg) acts like an arrogant jerk to his girlfriend, Erica (Rooney Mara), causing him to get dumped.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) teams with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) to explore the meaning of success in the early 21st century from the perspectives of the technological innovators who revolutionized the way we all communicate. The year was 2003. As prohibitively expensive technology became affordable to the masses and the Internet made it easy to stay in touch with people who were halfway across the world, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) launched a website with the potential to alter the very fabric of our society. At the time, Zuckerberg was just six years away from making his first million. But his hearty payday would come at a high price, because despite all of Zuckerberg's wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became mired in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Chief among that growing list of detractors was Zuckerberg's former college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), whose generous financial contributions to Facebook served as the seed that helped the company to sprout. And some might argue that Zuckerberg's bold venture wouldn't have evolved into the cultural juggernaut that it ultimately became had Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) not spread the word about Facebook to the venture capitalists from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence) engage Zuckerberg in a fierce courtroom battle for ownership of Facebook that left many suspecting the young entrepreneur might have let his greed eclipse his better judgment. The Social Network was based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.

The actress acts simply fabulous. You see so well the rage in her eyes.
Rooney mara has great movies!
And to think she was near to quit acting (bc of that Nightmare on Elm street remake she starred) but this movie and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" saved her career
@Ryan Irwin- Diehl she's even better with CAROL which won her an oscar
@@charlespuruncajas9663 so basically David Fincher saved her career
@Ryan Irwin- Diehl I love The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Jesse Eisenberg is really, really good at portraying a guy who is utterly oblivious to just how _insanely_ patronizing he is.
YES and he knows how to speak very fast, Gaslight-ive, patronizing, manipulative, with sociopathic tendencies. Every role he plays is meant for him. There are some roles I don’t see him playing. Then again the producers and director didn’t think Rooney Mara could play Lisbeth Salander. They called her back for a literal two months and told her to cancel her interview/photo shoot to come back one more time and she did. She got the part knowing she’d have to cut and shave her hair, she decided to get some REAL piercings for the role. So if she can do it perhaps Jesse can too. I’ve never been to fond of him but he’s a great actor.
aaaaaand that's about it, lol
@@angelicaduncan9694"gaslight-ive" stop
I have always wondered at what period in history did the term "patronizing" suddenly become a term associated with a negative connotation...
According to Websters 1828 dictionary: Patronizing, PAT'RONIZING, participle present tense Defending; supporting; favoring; promoting.
Today "patronizing" (along with many other formerly favorable terms) seem to bear a meaning which is precisely the opposite as what they did roughly two centuries ago.
@@jimvick8397 why? I'm not a native but I don't see any contradiction. When there are two adults , it's not normal when one is "patronizing". When someone is "patronizing" to you that means he doesn't see you as an equal, he diminishes your position while pretending to "care" about you. Either it is a passive aggresive manipution technique which is trying to weaken you without being openly hostile or they simply try to boost their confidence at your expence, using you as an "incompetent" "foil". In any case it's infuriating.
P. S. And before, like a century ago, it probably was more normal becouse the culture was more "patriarchical", people didn't strive for equlity and equal share of respect for everyone.
I love how Rooney Mara refrains from swearing, she subtly stops herself. Not because she's trying to be a better person, but because she knows her point won't get through to Mark. Brilliant opening scene.
True
Also, let's be honest, because the studio was going for a PG-13.

One of the most underrated opening scenes ever.
Admittedly, I feel like the rest of the movie flails greatly in comparison because of how incredible this opening scene is.
That's my favourite movie opening so.... yeah I just agree, nothing else to do.

You only get a line that brutal in a Fincher movie.
He didn’t write this movie. Aaron Sorkin did.
@@stevensellin6038 Didn't know who that was till rewatching West Wing.
Funny thing is, Sorkin thought she was “a class act”. Snappy, sure, but classy? NO. I classy person would politely break up with him later and not follow it up with a string of insults.
@@vanihm He was insulting her throughout the conversation - saying she'd slept with the door guy, belittling her background and her education, condescending to her, and then offering one of the most insincere "apologies" ever seen on film. Should she have sat there quietly and taken it? No. She'd had enough and she called him out, and it was well deserved. The "I have NO intention of being friends with you" line came after she tried being polite, and HE snapped that he didn't want to be friends. You don't owe politeness to someone who's showing you none, and a person doesn't lack class for standing up for themselves.
Nacha255 Those remarks all came AFTER she had broken up with him and said it was like dating a Stairmaster, which was my point. He made one insensitive (but probably correct) remark about the final club openning doors for them prior to that (and she had just said he could only get into the easiest one). Of course I’m pretty sure Sorkin would use that kind of language on a daily basis regardless of who he was breaking up with.
"Dating you is like dating a stair master". That was funny as hell.
what does 'stair master' mean?

He is well spoken but the words he says arent worth listening to, the second part to that takes time to realise but unfortunately its the most important bit.
Stability and comfort. Back in the day, if you were fairly hot, a nerd was a safe bet if you wanted a stable boyfriend you wouldn't have a lot of competition for. What they lacked in fun, social graces, and sex appeal, they made up for in usefulness: homework help, etc. The nerds knew this, and would almost never cheat, mostly because no one else wanted them but also because a hot girlfriend was really hard for them to get, so they were much less inclined to risk their relationship for some side action. But since the mid 2000's, the SMV of the nerd has risen dramatically, and created the Player Nerd: a subspecies of male somehow managing to embody the worst traits of both the nerd and the fuckboi, with none of the good.

David Fincher's direction is what keeps this scene from looking and feeling like a CW show with better dialogue.
And how are you saying it should have been a boring story? The story is actually interesting. The one from the script that is, not the one from real life. He didn't need to do that much. Fincher's basically a genius when it comes to film making, and Sorkin in terms of writing. This was a piece of cake for both of them.
What do you mean?

It's Sorkin's script, Cronenweth's cinematography and the actor's delivery so yes, Fincher's direction.

Yeah this isn’t good but let’s face it, if you’ve just had an argumentative breakup in a crowded room you are gonna wanna check no one heard. This was a perfect opening for this movie. Having a break up happen right at the beginning is just a genius way to sum up who this main character is.
This scene is fabulous. Absolutely brilliant dialogue between two actors at the top of their game
Absolutely love Aaron Sorkin's writing in this movie! God I'd kill to have just a 15-minute sitdown with the guy to pick his brain on how to write so freakin' fabulously.
If that’s what you’d kill for, you’re probably a Sorkin character already 😜
Look up a sit down he did back in 2015 at the Aspen Institute capped what’s character got to do with it. He discusses this very scene and trying to write the dialogue and how it might sound between two young adults from today, and then about why he landed on the dialogue he ultimately chose.
I've had my problems with Sorkin, but that last line is era-defining.

I love how the timing of the scene matches the music. You can barely hear it at first; the song begins with a twangy, slow-paced blues portion. But when Erica gets fed up with Mark, it builds up and then Jack White's screaming guitar solo starts and you can hear the song clearly. The music gets angry at the exact moment Erica does. Awesome stuff from Fincher.

Apparently this opening scene took hundreds of takes or something because Fincher is a perfectionist.
Kubrick was jealous,
yes Fincher is a perfectionist, however, in his own words, he does this in part because actors usually spend a lot of dead time on set, sitting around doing nothing. they like to act. by taking 90 or so takes, they get to exercise their craft and really get comfortable with the scene

One of the best movie on earth! The Social Network!
The way he looked up after she called him a nerd made me laugh idk why😂
I saw this and was hooked to the film- the witty dialogue the excellent acting is just amazing
"You don't have to study, you go to BU."
AOC went to BU and she just humiliated Zuck in front of the whole country. I think Sorkin would appreciate the irony.
AOC saw the movie and remembered this scene.
Well AOC isn't that intelligent.😂
Humiliated..?

A lot of money but a lot more loneliness...
Steven Hunt maybe he will pull an R budd Dwyer
Steven I don't think you mean it but you're sucking his sack pretty hard right now. I'm pretty sure that Sven was talking about what Sven would consider loneliness, but in reality loneliness is a subjective feeling. There is so much that is subjective in human nature that hints towards why there is so much hostility in interpersonal interactions. The only reason I commented is because you, like many others, fail to see someone else's point of view and end up looking like just another suck up.
If your immediate response is "Chill out bro its just a joke", then you are dodging responsibility and if you decide to attack me or send a slick remark then you are probably guided by feelings which cloud objective judgement.
Just take it in and walk away.
johnThe mann I dont like Mark.
Zombihilanth sorry I thought u liked mark. did I deleted comment
Not in real life though
Well she diagnosed him pretty accurately
She proves that there are no small roles, only small actors.
his point about meeting people that she normally wouldn’t meet is pretty spot on. i mean none of us could get into those parties
He was wrong in how she’d do it. He genuinely thought it was because she slept around, not once considering she could also social network like the other elites.
The solo ramps up as she gets angry
lol i just noticed after like 20th viewing
Ball and Biscuit playing in the background... Excellent dialogue... Superb acting... The Social Network is an excellent film!
I love the way he’s talking...
When you're implanting a pretentious insinuating retort to your significant other self-worth, you're just begging them to kick rocks and end the relationship right then and there.
This film came out in 2010. He talks like a complete robot. It's like the people behind this movie were trying to tell us what Zuckerburg's true form is
Wow... the music right after was what really made this scene and it's cut.
Zuck getting chicks was the most fictional part of this movie
well he met his future wife at Harvard
perhaps one of the best opening scenes in film history
lol 🤣😆 you don't watch many movies, right?
The No.1 Guy
Art is subjective .
Nat Kam
I am not saying I agree but art is subjective you are sounding as condescending as this jerk in the movie
"You are probably going to be a very successful computer-person."
Well, she wasn't entirely wrong!
Rooney Mara breaks up with Lex Luther and ends up engaged to the Joker
The man was built so different from others that he created a company reducing human socialization to digital blips so the world knows what it's like to be him.
