I'm a retired Lineman / Cable man of 38yrs. This may look more time consuming, but compared to hand taping as I was taught early on in my carrier, it is more faster. Price is very expensive, either way, you miss one step on primary voltage and your screwed. You'll see extra pieces on trucks when you had to open a new kit to replace one part, then you have to answer for the added cost to the project. Trick is when working with high voltage cable slow and easy, faster you go more mistakes happen. I encourage all young'uns to look at this trade, it was very good to me.
Borkzilla I’m thinking this splice is probably made on a power line up in the air. Not underground. Underground lines are contained in conduit. This line did not appear to be contained in a conduit. In fact it looked more like a communications line than a power transmission line.
Cables in Australia are buried direct, and the jointers Dona bit better of a job of making sure it ain’t going to leak. Sure, this is a demo, but I see a few bits that could encourage water to wick in.
This protection tube doesnt protect anything, therefore another protection tube is applied. Now its time to apply another protection tube to protect the previous two protection tubes. And finally a protection tube is applied on to the previous 3 protection tubes which doesnt protect the connection very well.
When you have a cable with 30kV and 3kA in it you really , really, really , really don’t want a leak. There’s enough power going through a cable like that to vaporize a bathtub of water in couple seconds.....
About a 100 years In the future , when they find this thing and carefully forensically unwrap it expecting to find ancient power crystals. They are gonna laugh for hours when they realize its a wire splice...
Nice video, and after seeing the comments below, I can tell there are a lot of hacks commenting. There are good reasons for having connections like this, sure there's more than one way to skin a cat, but if you have to have a connection that will out last the rest of the cable and be safe while doing so then this it. Plus it keeps the guys with the clip boards off your back.
I have to say, I'm impressed, I did not know so much work went into making these cable joins. I'm glad it does though, that's not the kind of cable you want coming apart.
Man, I wish they explained what everything did and why it's useful to use multiple layers etc. But probably the target audience already knows the details.

Sigh at all the keyboard warriors in this comments section. Unless you are a professional grid electrician, please shut the hell up. There are hundreds of engineers designing this stuff to bring society a reliable grid, and some DIY kids here who have tightened a wire nut or two come tell them that it’s not good.
i don't think you know what kind of cable this is... its for 7Kv-33Kv(after what i can see in the video), if there is any small airpocket between the grounding layer and the inner core then you will see the joint burn over in a couble of hours, or a couble of days if you're lucky.
Borkzilla this line would not be running to a single house. If anything it would be coming from a telephone relay station. High power lines are rarely dual conductor cables. This looks more like a communications cable.
think theres same amount of tape if not more .. he be better with silicone wtf he doin to it 😂 😂😂 3m I used to work in a place that cut their tape rolls 😂😂😂 fuckin Neva sent us this shit lol
1st MV termination I was involved in as an apprentice went to shit and blew up a 4160v switch at a NORAD site on Antigua in 1987. It was just after dark when the base lineman called the power house and told them to energize the circuit. I was great fireworks display! I am just glad I was the apprentice and essentially handed the Journeyman tools and other items as he did the work (did the work wrong evidently). I flew back to Florida the next day and missed the ass chewing on base.
😂 Great story. Better him than you at the time, but you know too that you may have the same responsibility at some point. It’s learning by mistakes be it yours or others. I like redundancy and having either a coworker, senior, or junior checklisting every step to insure a proper job with complex and high risk tasks. I’m no electrician by any means, but the redundancy works with other trades tasks as well.
TUT: how zu use all our products in 9minutes. And we don't know what tape works the best for this kind of operation, therefore use all in random order.
Doing the same job here in America, using 3M products, I feel that ours would hold up longer. The process is different, but same idea. We use a one piece outer boot. Just a different kit I suppose.
Jat Tan. Cleans cable to remove any contamination. Then applies electrically inert, void filling grease. Best to know what’s being done, before commenting on it .
That was only one phase.. in a clean room. Now try doing this in a small manhole or in a half water filled ditch.. 3m splice kit does make this job easier.
Haha, "How to spend $300 plus half an hour on a single joint". Oh, and don't forget to join a "Training" before you use our tape... Incredible, just incredible!
They had to repair the cable in my yard and it had 10 layers of repairs the whole thing took 2 weeks and maybe 20 guys. And left the directions pages laying in the grass it was kind of interesting
I love mastic, but geez never seen so much crap used to seal a joint. Might as well of used some glue at the edges of those cool shrink wrap tubes, just to make sure.. but I think its sealed.
I'm LMAO!!! Just when you think they won't add any more mastic tape/shrink, they just bring more that are bigger and bigger. I seriously thought it was a troll video by 6:55
I see a lot of steps that will get skipped unless you have documented quality control checkpoints for each process. And that takes a lot of time unless the inspector stays there thru the entire process.
I once fired an electrician because he was always using bodges with tape instead of going down to the wholesaler and buying the proper connectors. Now here we are ....
I didn't think you were supposed to splice primary underground cable, oh yeah I forgot the company can do anything they want when it benefits them ,what was I thinking.

Too bad I'm afraid of heights :(
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
I think 3M wants you to buy some of their tape...
Don't forget their specialty tape knife.
Well, I have to say 3M products are damm good quality. I would pick them over Chinese crap any day.
Yes no but 3M is best
Needs more tape
Should have made this video under the usual URD cable splicing conditions. At the bottom of a trench during a rainstorm.

@@thewidower1 not all lines under ground are in conduit, that is a power cable with a concentric neutral. They are used for high voltage under ground.
Why did RUclips recommend this to me?
Why couldn’t I stop watching it?
Embrace the pointless, but oh so fascinating knowledge lol
because you is a dyatelochek :)
what if you're like me and forget to put all those shrink tubes on one end before you start?
Than your fucked. I know that feeling man. When you solder like 30 wires and figure out you forgot the heat shrink...
Hot glue for life.
duct tape

This protection tube doesnt protect anything, therefore another protection tube is applied. Now its time to apply another protection tube to protect the previous two protection tubes. And finally a protection tube is applied on to the previous 3 protection tubes which doesnt protect the connection very well.
The first is applied to protect the first wire, the shrink tube is the one who protects and the tape is used to seal the shrink tube
Then the tube protects the tube and tape then big tape the ends 😂😂😂
Don’t forget about lube

My Dad worked for 3M for decades and grew up with a garage full of cable jointing equipment, happy memories.!

Thanks RUclips for putting this in my suggestions this is exactly what I've been looking for.

Take a shot every time a new 3M product is used for the same joint. Have your affairs in order before hand.
Remember to apply tape to the bottle beforehand.
Man, I wish they explained what everything did and why it's useful to use multiple layers etc. But probably the target audience already knows the details.
Essentially, everything thing inside the mesh is electrical isolation and everything outside the mesh is mechanical protection and moisture sealing.
I think NASA Approves this splice.
even NASA does not have this competency to approve 3M's MV joint.
Approved but barely
Needs more tape

Man that was something. 3M is the best!
How far will a 3M 2228 Mastic sleeve go up a 3M representatives ARSE.
May I ask, what would be the purpose of this application?
You may want to find a cheaper solution for your problem!

"No tools required." Good thing that a socket set doesn't count as a tool.
Also a good thing that the cables are already magically cut and stripped when you get there, glad I can finally get rid of my tool box
That's obviously the 3M 666 Ratchet tape, so it's tape, not a tool.
