- Do you know how to tie the Ursack?
Watch to learn the exact knots you need to know to effectively use the Ursack. With a little practice, you'll master them in no time at all.
But please do master them - not tying the Ursack correctly is one of the most common reasons an Ursack can fail and leave a bear with a food reward!
So just practice ok?

Thanks for such a clear illustration of the knots!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for this video. I come back to it every year 🙂
Thank you! That’s so simple and much easier than other videos.
this was very helpful really explained and showed how to do the knots correctly, much clearer than other videos I reviewed. Thanks
Thank you! Glad to hear this :)
Thank you for making this!
Thanks for sharing this! Great information!
Great instruction, thanks. Let's hope the bears dont have data. :>
Hey Mallory, thank you.
Mallory, your demonstration was very good, but have to ask this question, which will seem silly. Is the bag supposed to be loose or tight on the tree after tying the double overhead knots plus the figure 8? Have never tried the Ursack back yet and want to make sure it is correctly secured. Thank you!
Thanks , good. Helpful Info here.
What you've tied there is an offset figure eight bend or abnormal figure eight bend, in which the standing ends and free ends each exit the knot from the same side. Apparently that knot kills climbers, who should have tied the flemish bend, or normal figure eight bend, in which the free end of each rope exits with the standing end of the other. A safer knot. Are bears as strong as the weight of a climber? I don't know, but probably I think.
Did anyone else panic when she said "bear with me" at 1:56?
hahahaha! I didn't even realize! :)
Well done. Thankyou!!
TIL how to do a figure 8 knot. Thanks!
You're very welcome! Glad to hear this :)
I’ve used this knot previously but oh my gosh the Ursack Quick Release Knot is so much better than this one.
A double fisherman's knot around the tree is an extremely strong knot in that if a bear tries to yank the ursack away, the knot will not give. However, once you are done, it is a much easier knot for the human to untie than a figure eight. Even if the bear has been pulling on it with all it's might. Try it!
I wanted to see how you get it untied
