Omikron: The Nomad Soul was TBFP's King in Yellow. The more they played it, the more their sanity waned, leaving behind broken husks of the men we once knew. A schizoid fan theory favorite of mine is that this game genuinely formed an eternal rift between the Best Friend Zaibatsu, and caused the slow, agonizing death of these peoples' real life relationships. David Cage being like Sutter Cane, cursing those who complete his works, and damning this dimension into an inferno of ineffable and intoxicating madness. It's complete bullshit but, with how jarringly jank this game is, I surprise myself with how easy I can even believe it. Omikron: The YesMad Strain. Not even once. Not even fucking ONCE!
Just like Indigo Prophecy, Omikron starts off kinda interesting with some cool vibes and good atmosphere... and goes off the rails on meth. And one of my favorite parts of this game is just how casual it is about the nomad soul/player murdering people and ruining their lives. You steal people's bodies without their consent, use them, then kill them off to steal someone else. We're a freaking monster!
My god, this is like if someone tried to mix Doom with a futuristic murder mystery. And added allsorts of bollocks into it because they could. Of course that someone was gonna be David Cage.
Omikron and Michigan Report From Hell are two games that are super nostalgic for me despite me never actually playing them. I think both just encompass a certain era of jank games.
I remember the prerelease hype and rumours for this game _very_ well.. Reading what they were planning to do with it was pretty mind blowing at the time
I love that both you and Super Eyepatch Wolf upload Omikron videos within hours of each other and both censor the ghost tats with DC's face. There is no other option. There was a kernel of hope for this turkey, between the art and music departments at least, but the Cageyness of it really torpedoes it. I would love to know what about it drew Bowie in.
I bought this close to launch on PC in 1999. I was 18. You have to put yourself in that time period. This came out before Shenmue. Omikron incorperated FPS, 3D fighting, open world mechanics, with an intriguing story that was voice acted. I thought it was incredible at the time.
I wish David cage made more games simply so I could listen to you absolutely demolish him in your video analysis 😂 it would be really fun to watch you do full let’s plays but I don’t want you to be tortured either lol
You can bet I made this my choice of entertainment for my dinner time; I was seated with a full plate and a glass of wine for this one and boy, it did not disappoint. I've tried to play Omikron a few times over the years because as you mentioned in the video, something about the atmosphere is unique and almost appealing and it made me want to explore the world it presented but, oof, my god.... the jarring jumps back and forth in game mechanics and shoddy controls and the disjointed unloading of story usually put a big fat stop to that every time. Some of the puzzles you showed off really do remind me of that bonkers era of adventure games where you had to think of the most obtuse solutions to puzzles and not having a walkthrough meant banging your head over every surface in your computer room until you hit a random pixel by luck that had what you needed or you found/used an item in a way that no sane person would ever think to use in such a way and a small masochistic part of me misses that cracked attitude to game design. Thanks for defeating David's five evil exes and finally setting your soul free... well, at least until his Star Wars train wreck crashes into the station in 5 more years or whenever it's finally (if ever) released.
Hell yeah! You're a madman for going this deep into the Cage-alogue, not to mention a god damn hero. Watching this bad boy right now, just hit play WOOO!
I played this as a kid (I still have the boxed copy) and I actually really enjoyed it at the time, though I've not played it recently. I really struggled with some of the FPS sections and didn't have internet or access to any cheats or guides, but I managed to find a bug: in the FPS mode, you can take fall damage, but fall damage can't actually kill you, instead it resets your health bar to full. So any time I was low on health, I could get a free full heal by just jumping from a high place. Infinite health glitch; making all the FPS sections a cakewalk. This was how I ended up beating the game as a little kid. I wonder if that exploit is still in the game. (this was on the PC version).
Yeah NGL this game is so absolutely my shit. Trying to do five things badly instead of one thing well? Clumsily breaking the fourth wall? Weird elecrto music? Loved every minute of this one. Despite all my rage, I'm still just David Cage.
Subbed literally a few days ago from arkham666 rec and watched most of your videos. Just wanted to ask what literature inspires you or you are fond of (besides these game makers biography you mentioned )
Not sure about being inspired. But I do read when I have some downtime. Mostly it's Sci-fi stories from William Gibson or Neal Stephenson. Stephen King of course, especially in his cocaine years. But if you were looking for something that got me into writing about games, the guy that sticks out to me is Charlie Brooker, His reviews where hilarious
this game is fascinating to me, and i thank you for covering it. i love this games atmosphere and art direction. it always reminds me of this mid 90s asian-ish futurism? too bad it was made, directed, and written by a hack lol.
Ahhh, the David Cage saga continues! Or begins, rather. Omikron must be the only game of his I'm still actually interested to play due to how bizarre it is.
I do find it interesting how Cage's games seem to get less and less gameplay as they go on. (Nice use of Syndicate music at 17:00 roughly btw) Omikorn: FPS and Fighting game sections. Indigo Prophecy: one FPS section that feels like a tutorial for an unfinished mechanic. Heavy Rain: Fights are quick time events that sometimes you get bailed out of if you lose. Beyond: You don't even need to win at any QTEs until end game lmao. Though Detroit seems to at least have more consequences. (I will give Heavy Rain/Detroit some props for at least attempting to have more choices compared to the rest of his games it seems though how much that amounts to is debatable.) I've only played Indigo Prophecy and Omikorn is the only one so far I plan to play next.
Honestly thanks for creating this video for this game. I have been looking for this game for YEARS, because one of my siblings played this game VERY briefly and now I see why 😅😆. You are a great sport to play through these painful games to make a solid POV and overview. Another thing I highly agree with you on is that its creativity and imagination is ahead of its time, I mean wow 1999!? so it is real unfortunate that it didn’t blossom properly as it should revolving around, flat plot, and poor execution but overall thanks for this video 💯
I actually quite liked this vid. It's crude, it's irreverent, but it doesn't feel mean-spirited to the point of cruel. The opinions are well-thought out and while the humour isn't everyone's cuppa, it is mine. And personally, I hate the fact that video essays have come to culturally be associated online with the kind of creators who come across like theatre kids wanting to LARP as University academics.
I bought this game back in the day on Dreamcast and it took me nearly a decade to beat it because the game is so god damn broken! I got hard crashes, game breaking glitches and just nearly impossible FPS sections for the Dreamcast controller to handle. Good times though 😂
❤❤❤I played this game when it was new. it blew my mind ao hard you could truly have no idea unless you were a kid at this time wherein even being on a personal computer meant sneaking into your brothers room 🎉
As an Earthling truther I felt the burn as well but I'm also used to people knocking his later outputs. I will admit that Hours is a bit better though.
Back in the day, I remember being very impressed with the unconventionality, however I soon dropped the game because the execution of every mechanic (from quite an eclectic array of them) was too sloppy for my liking. But hey, these were the times when David Cage at least tried something experimental and didn't yet start aping his own Heavy Rain for eternity, finally turning into nothing but a pompous platitude dispenser. I could respect the efforts at creating something novel from scratch. The same went for studios like Bethesda, Ubisoft, even goddamn Konami. Hell, Richard Garriott wasn't a dumbas then! And don't get me started on how cool Electronic Arts were lmao. Can't stand most of them now, but they sure were full of surprises before going creatively bankrupt. It's not a "good old days" post, though, I'm just pointing out a natural generational change. Got them replacements in due time and all. But the old fucks still hang in there, of course. And those are way beyond salvation.
Yeah i want this this to have a remaster, but i doubt it gonna remaster like shadowman or tomb raider hd it ger over-hauled, improve , rebalance and fixed.
I didn't have too many problems with the Dreamcast version, besides the framerate, and the bug on the Tetra's factory never happened to me, that section still sucks anyway, but maybe I was lucky due to I was playing it on OG hardware with GDemu on it, but I like the story, I didn't consider it the worst aspect, cause is a mess in terms of writing, but I still found it enjoyable cause of how stupid it is, I liked it, personally the weakest part of this game is the combat, and probably this is due I played this game on Dreamcast, but many of the moves are so delayed or unresponsive, and enemies when they do an uppercut, they still can block your attacks in mid uppercut animation, is so janky and broken that my best option was to use low kicks or slides to properly damage the enemies, I respect this game for what it is during it's time, and what tried to do, but it really has too many problems in the gameplay scenario, besides that I still enjoy it, I think is a good game, but there's better games with these kind of ideas and concepts, and better options on Dreamcast, PC, PS1 during this era.
Hello Scott my name is Isaiah and I have something important to say to you. God loves you and like any father he wants to help you and keep you safe especially from the devil. But I am not just speaking to you about this I am also talking to your fans about this. God loves you all and especially in the times we our living in. We need him more than ever. But the choice is ultimately yours have a nice day Shalom Shalom.Happy Easter.
I played this on the Dreamcast back in the day, and I was impressed at first with the cityscape and the setting. This was before I had any internet access though, and eventually I just gave up on it. I remember just getting amazingly bored, and for a David Cage game that's depressing. His game may be a lot of things, but I've never been bored by them. I've always had (both unintentional and intentional) fun with his games. But this one is both boring and forgettable to me. On the plusside no one can accuse it for being a lazy game. It's VERY ambitious. Way too ambitious for its own good.
You know this game is bad if it was able to BREAK the 2 best friends down completely.
Bro...too soon.
When Woolie was saying, "I'm going to kill everyone and then myself" I lost my shit laughing.
Pat and woolie getting into a screaming match about a door while Matt tries to break it up was the part of that.....God I Miss everyone.
@@MegaMar14 Good times lmaoo!

You can't mention Kiss Psycho Circus and not expect me to ask "review when"
Yeah I know, actually I have been trying to get the pc port working but that footage is all I could get before it would blue screen my pc 😂

Is the SEW patreon only?
@@thealkymyst It's on the Regular Eyepatch Wolf channel, the origin challenge video is on Versus Wolves
Yeah I watched the podcast about a week ago. Watching John suffer was very cathartic
Scott, you’re so brave. I am in awe of your courage. What a warrior.
Lol shut up! I'm just to stubborn for my own good
You could apply this to all of David’s works, but what was David smoking when he made the script and is it still being sold in stores?
He was smoking 'emotions' xD
I kinda wanna get this for DC just to see if it crashes all the time lmao

Beyond the Draw Distance: The David Cage Story
Truly we were the nomad souls that were made along the way.
I played this game in 2000 and adore it. I was 14. Took me all summer.
My brother in christ a big money hustlas reference, holy fuck my man you're the best.
Used to play this game and PSO on Dreamcast all the bloody time. I’ve fond memories of both. I’d love it if they remade it - with all of its oddities.
I wish David cage made more games simply so I could listen to you absolutely demolish him in your video analysis 😂 it would be really fun to watch you do full let’s plays but I don’t want you to be tortured either lol
This soundtrack got me into Bowie, Hours is my favorite album of his.
Yeah me too!
12:38 nice font choice
I just find it hilarious that David “We don’t make games for f**gots” Cage collaborated in making a game with bi icon David Bowie
I don't understand.

It's easily the most gamey of his digital splats. In fact it's frustrating that they never had a second go at making another.
