      However, a Sheremetyevo-Shannon-St. John's-José Marti's way to fly down with the type was serious noise! But at a young age, I endured it for the pleasures of the Varadero beach.

    I live under an approach flightpath to SEA. These IL-96s used to fly over me at around 2,000 ft. on their final landing approach to SEA in the mid to late 90s, before Aeroflot went with the Boeing and Airbus wide bodies on longer international flights. They were SO, UNBELIEVABLY LOUD! Until I got used to the racket their engines made, I always assumed a commercial jetliner was in serious distress and was headed for a crash in the area! I kind of miss hearing them now that they're gone - You knew when the 'Russians were coming' into Seattle!

      The IL-96 meets the ICAO Chapter 3 noise requirements just like any other modern large jet aircraft.

    • @JJKSeattle
      @JJKSeattle 7 лет назад +1

      Oh, I've no doubt they do. But they are considerably louder than their Western equivalents. That's all.

    • @Itapirkanmaa2
      @Itapirkanmaa2 7 лет назад +1

      +J Koch If you are in fact talking about the IL-96 like you said it's in the same ICAO Chapter 3 category as the Western a/c of the era, so it can't be considerably louder in reality, or the ICAO have done their research wrong. Evaluating the marginal differences in noise with accuracy from ground is for a lay person next to impossible.

    IL-62s used to fly via Anchorage after the falling out of the US and USSR in the '80s. For its western US links, Aeroflot Il-62s flew east from Moscow and routed via Anchorage while Shannon in Ireland was used as a hub to New York. Aeroflot also used Shannon to fly to the Caribbean, Sth America and Mexico and carried about 1/4 million Russian/Irish passengers/year via Shannon in the '90s. On any given day Shannon had up to 8 IL-62s and IL-86s plus Tu-134/154s and AN-124s.

    I once flew Aeroflot's Il-62, it was in 96... I can't say I enjoyed whole flight - the cabin semed to be a bit narrow, take off was slow and weak, flight was bumpy, and shaking flaps on landing made me feel a bit scared (I was a 14 year kid). But anyway - Il-62 was our first transcontinental jet and is taken a worthy place in Russian aviation history.
    Now it's nearly impossible to see one in Moscow.
    Liked the vid, thx.

      Actually people is used to assume that long flights have to be done by a wide body aircraft, but a good example of narrow body airplanes that serve long distances is the Boeing 757. The bumpy ride is more related to weather than the airplane itself, however more flexible wings designed nowadays help with that issue

    The awesome, swept back tail of old Russian jetliners. Combine that design with a set of double-barrel engines on either side, and you have an aircraft that means business and looks like it's already at cruise speed standing still.
    Jets are like cars. Sometimes they don't dominate in performance, but you can't help but love the way they look.

    That was a funny thing with Aeroflot plane still under the old soviet livery, but replacing the soviet flag with the new Russian Federation flag. The Russia flag wasn't added totally covering the old Soviet flag, but a part of it. It was like soome kind of... undercover mesage, like ''We are leaving... for now. But we will come back''. What we have witnessed with Russia until today, means what i'm saying is not that wrong. Even Andrei Illarionov warned of such plans against many neighbours (and the invasion of Crimea) dating back from early 2000s (aprox. 2003). Not a coincidence the semi-covered soviet flag it seems...

      I like that Aeroflot kept the hammer & sickle wings logo after the soviet union fell.

      does anyone call the dc-8 a copy of the 707 because they used podded underwing engines? no? ok. The Soviets definitely borrowed ideas liberally at times, but they're allowed to use 4 rear-mount engines if they please.

    it's a weird design. I don't think it was ever a good idea putting 2 jet engines that close to each other.

      If it wasn't such a good idea, then why was the plane so successful (and fast). I don't think there are any other commercial aircraft that are faster than the IL-62, which is a design from around 1960.

      Go fuck yourself. VC10 first flight was on 29th of june 1962. IL-62 first flight was on 3rd january 1963. It's impossible make a copy so fast. The development of aircraft in Soviet Union has always last for several years.

      VC10 was a smaller plane with a similar engine configuration. It was not the success that the IL-62 was (and still is).
