Just watched a (published May 2019, approx interview date Nov 2018??) YT interview of Laura Dekker where she explains donating / gifting "Guppy" to LifeSail only to hear later of their sailing and subsequent anchoring where ocean waters pushed "Guppy" into a reef where they abandon the boat and let it be dashed to bits by water and waves on the reef. LifeSail turned into DeathSail for "Guppy" and a real kick-in-the-ass, not only to Laura who believed in their story, but also the kids (if they ever existed) that Laura tried to support via the gift of her boat. I understand Laura's tear's...deeply. Here's her own words from a forum she wrote:

Like most, heard her story, and knew about some of the struggles..and to be honest remember thinking what is a 14yr. old doing solo sailing out in open water! But she proved to everyone..and mostly to herself, that she could not only do it, but overcome obstacles that would have had most people throwing in the towel rather quickly. That boat should be in a museum, but actually is a nice craft. Will read her book now, and learn her story through her own words, always the best way to 'learn more'. These are great, and the only complaint I can come up with is they are to short! More please, and a bit less 'quicky' of a look at these. Like I heard she was just moving over to a locker or something small and napping basically for quite a bit of the trip, and I would have liked to see where that was ;)

I hope you never remove this video as it is historic in that it shows in detail Laura's "Guppy" as she was in it sailing around the world at her age then. Unfortunately, the bald man in this video, his smirk, and his "we're going to help the children" false words will forever be a stain of infamy upon this boat's legacy and heritage...it's sad that such an amazing vessel, honoring its young keep around the world and beyond, would then -- through trickery -- find such cruel people in its last days.

I've been sailing for 46 yrs and was in the business of restoring hinkleys, older persons, bristol, west sail etc. one thing for sure I have concluded is that boats find their owners and some boats do not like new owners. I know of one sailboat ran over by a barge and they had to scoop it out of the mud and the previous owner had circumnavigated twice with that boat. Another boat new owner went out and was hanking on the jib when he leaned on the single lifeline and it came loose and the boat left him. Another boat with new owner thru blade off of wind generator and sliced a mans wife in the face. I could go on with 8 other stories but this boat would scare me to take it even for a day sail without Laura. Oh well, only time will tell and u were lucky with just a broken rib.

You know a lot of people will say this is bull..but I too feel boats have to also match with a person, and have seen and heard somethings that make believe that is true, Only owned 2(sailboats anyways), many more powerboats, but sometimes they don't like new owners, or miss their old ones.

You should also check out Jessica Watson who sailed around the world at age 16 but was denied a record as her course was less than 21600 miles. She did it on a S&S34 Ella Pink Lady, These boats are brilliant, Jon Sanders did a double solo almost non-stop circumnavigation on his Perie Banou , ( he was denied this record as he accepted some food off Tasmania half way around the double, ) Jesse Martin also sailed non-stop around the world on one of these, Lionheart, at age 16 ... I also happened to race one of these in the 1980's. They are still winning races with an S&S34 nearly winning the Sydney Hobart outright a couple of years ago. ..
