Originally composed in the early 1700s when Anne was queen, and John Churchill, Lord Marlborough, led Britain ( along with Prince Eugene of Savoy) led a British- HolyRoman Empire allief force against the French (Minden, Malplaquet, Turin, etc. Modified during Napoleonic Wars, a hundred years later, to King George ( III). Actually, the British were in Portugal to support the pro-British Portugeuse force the pro-French Spanish out, therefore defeating the French at the same time. Of course this song actually dates for about 100 years before Sharpe, celebrating the British support of the Dutch in Flanders in the early 18th Century, again against the Spanish, hence the line "Queen Anne commands and we obey..."

EXAMPLE of 18th and early 19th Century British Recruiting ( shillings on the drum)
" Taking the King's shilling "( Enlistment Pay).
Very enlightening song
Minden was much later (1759). Think BROM - Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet, although Malplaquet was very much a Pyrrhic victory.
I love this version. I can imagine this as a recruitment tool, with the smartly uniformed recruitment squads going through villages and small towns singing it, beating the drums and displaying the 40 shillings to farmboys and apprentices

Actually, the British were in Portugal to support the pro-British Portugeuse force the pro-French Spanish out, therefore defeating the French at the same time.
