  • In the 2024 Copa América, Uruguay defeated the USA 1-0, marking the first time the USMNT has been eliminated in the group stage in 20 home tournaments. This result has significant implications for the state of US Soccer, raising questions about the team's future direction. The USMNT's elimination after the 1-0 loss to Uruguay has sparked a debate on whether Berhalter is the root of the problem and what he got wrong in this match. Additionally, there is a discussion on the type of manager that this USMNT squad needs moving forward.

Berrhalter was SO PUMPED to tell his team Bolivia was 1-1 with Panama and a draw might be enough in a must-win game. The game wasn't over and anyone that knew that matchup knew Panama could and would most likely score more, because they had to. So what is the point of even trying to communicate that? To get your team to not go for a win in a must-win game?
Guy played for a draw in the Panama game and it was awful tactics that backfired. Guy tried to communicate to his team they should play for a draw against Uruguay in a must-win game and they scored seconds later.

Facts. Casuals and pundits overhype this squad of decent players that should be playing a different type of football. Yes, the coach should be fired because he can't get the best out of this group in a tactical sense, U.S has a limited repertoire when it comes to game plan just push and play direct passes, but also in a managerial sense because this team has a weak mentality which they showed both against Panama and against Uruguay. A coach from another country with more experience and tradition could be a better solution as long he can shake the foundations of American football by working all the way down to U17.

Bruce Arena made it to the quarter finals of a World Cup and was a missed handball away from a semi final. Bob Bradley upset Spain to make it to the Finals of confederations cup and then Kilnsmann made it out of a World Cup group with Ghana, Portugal, and Germany and additionally made it to the semis of Copa America. All of these coaches were able to get the most out of overall less talented players than we have now. Berhalter at his best has done the bare minimum of what’s expected and at worst has been grouped in what was one of the easiest groups. He has NEVER punched above his weight.

Of course it's a HUGE advantage; but the U.S. play around 95% of the games at home & then people wonder why they can't handle adversity. This U.S. team was terrible on the road in the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2022 World cup & ended up tied with 4th place Costa Rica for points (Canada was #1).
They will mostly continue to play at home until the next CONCACAF qualifiers that they will be involved with in 2030 & believe me, they will struggle badly once again, because they will not know how to handle the adversity at all.
You also talk somewhat arrogantly about Panama like it should have been an easy win for the U.S.
I have news for you. Panama have a pretty good team & they are well coached & well organized. Part of the U.S. team's problem is that the U.S. players keep being told by the media, fans & podcasters that they are 'The Golden Generation' & that they are a lot better than they really are. Yes, they play in European leagues; but , as was stated by your panel, only a couple of the players have been really successful there & even Pulisic struggled badly until this year.
Oh yeah & it's not all Berhalter's fault either.
You guys need to give Panama & the rest of CONCACAF a lot more respect, instead of acting like you are way above the other teams.
Try be at least a little humble America. It will actually help you improve in the long run, because your team still has a very long way to go before they can be competitive with the big dawgs...

I would take the whole of Canada's top 7 players (Davies, David, Eustaquio, Buchanan (even though he has been out of form for the Copas), Kone, Johnston & Crepeau) any day over the U.S' top 7 & Canada's team has a dogged determination too. Canada was #1 in the 2022 qualifiers too, while the U.S. tied 4th place Costa Rica in points. Canada had a tough politically difficult 2023; but those issues have been fixed & Marsch was hired, because he is a good fit for Canada's young, very fast paced, tough & talented team.

The biggest problem with football in the US is that you don't have relegation and a proper pyramid of merit. All your sports are the same, if losing has no consequences then winning has no value, it's just entertainment wrapped up to look like sport. Without the competetive culture you find in Europe/SA then you'll never really strive and never achieve anything. Of course the US has players that play outside of the US but you just don't have the long term cultural perspective to understand how international tournaments operate and how extremely difficult it is to succeed. Even if you have a great squad and a good manager so many things have to go right and just a few things going wrong can derail everything. I've watched football for 50 years, if theres one thing I've learned from constant disappointment, there's always next time, keep the faith and enjoy the moments.

I'm fine with a new manager as well, but US players have to be brave to go to Europe and force themselves to improve!

The USA must must must get out of the individualistic D1 college mindset. It's starting with MLS academies but my goodness it's taking a looong time - if a player shows any kind of serious talent at ages 11 through 15, that player needs to be scooped up into a FULL time professional club development system. Period. No more middle school. No more high school. No more college. You are now a professional footballer - sure things will change, you will grow, your body will change, you may get slower, you may stop growing, but you also may get faster, you may get quicker! But without the football skills and IQ, the speed and quickness won't be enough. The US must build a foundation of talent.

What's funny is that the Uruguay game was the best of the three for the US in this group. Uruguay is just far and away the best team we faced. We exited this group when we only beat Bolivia by 2 (we would've had to beat Uruguay by at least 2 in order to advance) and when we found a way to lose to Panama.

The statement to me screams pre-written... Like before the Uruguay match he was already trying to figure out how to best word his statement to make it sound like there are going to, possibly, be changes... That and the fact he was screaming the other games score to the players... Telling them it was 1-1... WTF is the point of that? The saddest part about it was he was telling the guys the score as Uruguay were preparing their free kick that ultimately they scored the lone goal on... Like our guys heard it was 1-1 now and they took a breath and relaxed and Uruguay are THOSE GUYS they are the DOGS of Conmebol and they took advantage that we relaxed for just a second... But WHY is loser Gregg, bare minimum GGG telling his players the score of other games in the middle of our game? ESPECIALLY right before an important dangerous free kick? THAT alone tells me exactly why we are inconsistent, exactly why we have no wins against good teams, and why he HAS to go. He's just trying to squeak by, that's it and that's all... And he's failing at squeaking by now too...

Brazil scored 1st, 200k Brazilians dancing the zamba. Uruguay comes back reaching deep within not to quit. The last 10-15 minutes of the game there was absolute silence from the 200k as Uruguay scored the 2nd goal to become world champions for the 4th time. 🇺🇸 soccer has no such depth, or soul.

6:45 to say the first half was promising wasn’t watching the game with any objectivity. The US never threatened the goal. The xG was .09 meaning an own goal was the only way we were scoring. The xG for the entire game was less than .3 and that came from a foul against the Uruguayan keeper when his arm was stepped on when the he also to retrieve it. Most likely would have been called back (given the ref, who knows). Uruguay didn’t come out to play slow or control the game in the first 20 minutes. Play hard and let the US run through their adrenaline and then control the game. That’s exactly what happened. Holland vs Romania was the exact same game. Horribly outmatched, Holland held the back pretty tight and just let Romania come at them for 20 minutes and then completely took the game over. That was an Uruguayan side who weren’t playing a knock out round and they dominated us!

He was the only option that's why he played. Weah, Musah, Turner mostly sit on the bench. And the ones that are on the US bench that play are mostly playing at a bit lower standard. Nico made a good point about the toughness and mentality of earlier - and less talented - teams. I have no idea what Berhalter is like in the locker room or classroom, but his demeanor and personality on the sideline and in interviews is pure milk toast, bland, dishrag. And THAT persona carries through the whole squad. The few world class players on the team - Pulisic, Jedi and maybe one or two others - demonstrate the energy and focus and toughness on the pitch. But it's 11 players for 90 minutes and it just never rises to the level needed to win. USMNT needs a new coach, a benevolent firebreather, who can light a fire and develop creativity and team identity.
