    I really enjoy how traditional sword fighting has been given this gorgeous, sleek, nerdy repackaging, making the ancient fechtbuchs and fighting manuals relevant in a modern context. I'm a longtime larper, and having watched many of these videos, I can see many moves and sets of footwork I regularly use. From my modest standpoint, this is wonderful.

    From what I've seen, the Makashi style seems to resemble greatly the style of the weapon sabre in fencing. The target area is roughly the same and the blade's mechanics work similarly to that of a sabre. I know that this form is based on fencing, and I thought there would be more epee-like or foil-like moves, but there seems to be none. Correct me if I'm wrong.

      Much of traditional Smallsword/ Epee was based on dueling traditions and artifice. It was a social thing not a self defense thing, hence why there is nothing on drawing the weapon, it was expected they would have their weapons out and they would wait for each other. Earlier Rapier treatises, which used foil as a training and teaching method, not a practical fighting system, had drawing and grappling techniques, but also cuts.

      Makashi is basically Snake style but with a Lightsaber. It does have a fencing feel to it though.

      @@stuffguru Oh, a petulant, ad hominem attack on Christmas? I should have put tea in. In any case, Didier, and Capoferro (and Giganti if I remember correctly but I can't recall the plates) are on my side in proving you wrong, as they cover both drawing the weapon and grappling, Angelo has some small sword hand trapping but that was unheard of by the time of Epee. If you'd like to cite your sources, I can show you where your misunderstanding is. Otherwise, Happy Christmas.

    Just out of curiousity, could you show a makashi Jar´kar with a normal saber and shoto some time? kinda like a rapier and parrying dagger in fencing. Just wondering how that would be and how that would look like^^

    • @Cyclonus5
      @Cyclonus5 4 года назад

      You absolutely could and the shorter sabre would be favored as it kept the blades from getting tangled. Jensaraai's video on the form makes an excellent argument.

    Form 2 makashi is the embodiment of traditional European dueling aka fencing. The true basis of the form resembles that as mentioned of saber, however encompasses that of foil, epe also and a few techniques from rapier fighting. Reason I say encompasses is because the basics still relies heavily on saber footwork where rapier is more free flowing with it's footwork. However the target zones are exactly the same for all fencing

    I know this video focused on the Hutt Slide and Hyper Jump Step, but my most common step is the Cross Step. Any tips on using that, and why was it not included in the video?

    • @TerraPrimeLightsaber
      @TerraPrimeLightsaber  10 лет назад

      Well, as you stated, this video was about the differences between these two steps. Many people are confused onto which is which. A cross step would be a bit off topic for this video. We will be producing more of these, so we may cover it at some point. DN

    From what I read the style of that beats all the other forms cause it has a strong defense to parry and counter attacking at a point to leaver the enemy unbalanced for another strike. Perfect for dueling 1v1

    • @MisschicaMochi
      @MisschicaMochi 10 лет назад +2

      Not necessarily. It's been known that Djem So practitioners can overwhelm Makashi users due to Djem So's sheer raw power of blade techniques. Whereas Makashi specialists prefer finesse and precise bladework. Nevertheless, it all boils down to the duelist's experience, skill level, and wit.

      Indeed, Makashi was designed specifically for 1v1 Saber Dueling.

    • @jjmiles7173

      Forms 3 and 4 could deal with it. Makashi was designed to beat Shii-Cho.

    Stupid question on my part, but is it possible to use Makashi without using a curved hilt? I've heard most say that's the way to go, but curved is so uncomfortable in my hand and I really like my standard hilt.

    • @TerraPrimeLightsaber
      @TerraPrimeLightsaber  5 лет назад +1

      Considering that most people have straight hilts, yes. In fact, the curved hilt is over rated in my opinion. DN

    • @Cyclonus5
      @Cyclonus5 4 года назад

      All forms were built around the use of the basic hilt and, while the Curved hilt was built for Makashi, all forms could use the curved hilt but it provides certain advantages and disadvantages that would likely requires much modification of the style as using a saberstaff. I would say the use of the curve hilt is a personal expression as much as a saberstaff, pike,light dagger or dual blades: for some its not an option, for others it's as natural as breathing.

    Am I the only one who noticed that they weren't targeting their opponent's bodies, but their blades. Even for what they were doing, you're supposed to target your opponent directly, not the blade. Otherwise it's ineffective and looks goofy as hell.

    • @marktrevino5503
      @marktrevino5503 4 года назад

      Yes true but also at the heart of fencing and dueling is ones blade work so testing your opponents use of his weapon in as just as critical as attacking them, makashi is very formal in that regard as disarming your opponent is concidered a victory just as much as slaying them or running them through, hence why dooku looked on in horror when Anakin severed both his hands in their duel as that is frowned upon in dueling. It's concidered the biggest form of insult in a duel as a swordsman is nothing without his hands just as much as a swordsman is nothing without his blade.

    Wow. cool you guys have all that gear, armor, costumes, sabers, that... thing on the wall in the background all the time, you guys have your own dojo! ... and no combat/weapons training or expertise of any kind whatsoever?... I mean why not spend a couple bucks on martial arts lessons as a start? Then maybe get all that other stuff...
