I too got sent this and am in the middle of writing my own review of it. Glad to see yours, I'll be sure to touch on some of the things you didn't because lord knows there's a massive amount of material here! 'Gobsmacked' would be the best way to describe my reaction to this thing. My mouth open and just 'wow' for every page. One of the most stunningly unique and horrific settings I've ever read.
Great review, Dan. You're absolutely right that mainstream D&D would not and *could not* produce RPG books like this. That's what's so great about the OSR and indy gaming in general.
So glad you posted this review. I really like the Lamentations of the Flame Princess content. They have so much stuff, really great variety, art, maps, tables, etc.
Speaking of LoTFP, I love The Book of Antithesis. I love how it makes fun of the satanic panic. It's a parody book that most don't even realize it's a parody
It's great to see someone come up with a weird concept and just run with it. You can tell this must've been a real labor of love. Thanks for making me aware of this, the "Lamentations" game hadn't really crossed my radar before now.
Really liked your review. It’d be fantastic for you to interview the author so we could learn the back story on the creative process that went into making it.
LotFP is my jam! I have these books arriving on the 31st! I can't wait to dig into them. Lamentations adventures ALWAYS have a weird edge to them, and my players appreciate the strange, ontological curveballs, lol. I'm really looking forward to these books and extras!
What a well made supplement this is, with a wealth of original content. My family and I got to visit Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown this past summer. All I can say is that if the grimdark creatures don’t kill the PCs, the heat and humidity definitely will. 😅☀️🔥😈
I love that getting away from the pulp setting is becoming more and more accepted. Not to say that Scottish dwarves and snooty elves don't have a special place in my heart... But I don't want to play in that realm all the gosh darn time 😂
This looks fantastic! Also, I listen to you at 1.25 speed and at one time you were listing various things you can buy and it came out razor snuff boxes. I now want one and maybe even figure out what that could be used for......
That does sound totally weird! lol btw, I also love low screens. It is so much easier to hike a few things while being able to reach over. Great review!
Thank you for the review. I picked it up in PDF for $12.50 on Drivethrurpg. 423 pages wow! I also just backed the Colonial Gothic rpg (4th ed) and so this was a timely advertisement so I intend to convert it (or I suppose I could run it on the LotFP or B/X systems).
The slipcased version you received is the limited edition, priced at €300. It’s the standard edition which is half that. While clearly a well-executed premium item, I’m really not sure who this product is for. It’s already targeting a hyper-niche audience. Of those people, I’m fairly certain only a handful have the disposable income to afford it. Only the PDFs are within reach for the average consumer.
@@baronvonswankenstein LotFP seems to be going for a niche market. All their product releases are kind of like that. Frankly, it is an odd situation where he encourages a small, extremely devoted group. A big part of the sales pitch is the drama James is going through at the time; he has multiple videos of him talking about his politics or stating his position on censorship on his RUclips channel. It is a "lifestyle brand" that presents itself as divergent to the norm. They sold a $300 bucket to make their bills and other nonsense. It is their shtick.
@@rynowatcherFrom the way you describe things, it sounds like a “small extremely devoted group” is all he has. If, as you say, the airing and validation of grievances is part of “the brand,” then all anyone’s going to get with that is an audience who have, and identify with, perpetual grievances themselves. It’s the core dynamic of the incel movement, a toxic dynamic that most people avoid.

What's Dimmesdale got that Deathbringer doesn't? Everything I see from Lamentations makes me want to own it just to read, regardless of whether I could get a group to play it!
@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I used to think everyone had read at least the classics of American literature, especially since my education is nothing special, not even an undergrad degree. Then I remember that I'm in my 40s and my kids remind me all the time that none of their friends read books. As much as that makes me weep for our future, I also once had to explain to someone the Christian themes and culture of the period Hawthorne is writing about, since they didn't understand any of the Biblical references or organization of the colonies at that time. This guy was my age. Pfft.
Damn I'm tempted of getting this purely for supporting lotfp, raggi looks like a crazy guy with an uncompromising artistic vision and tempts me so much to make a crazy purchase
This is such a gorgeous set and exactly what you want to see from a setting/campaign. I wish I could justify buying it, but I'd probably never run it. Might get it anyway to keep on my shelf. 😂
It's a D&D copy. If you've played BECMI editions then you know how to play. Thief skills work on d6 instead of d100, but that's about the only big change.
Thanks for reviewing this, I was unaware of this product. But, being a history buff as well as a forever DM, I had to get it. And the pdf at half-price was too good a deal to pass up. Now that I own it, I just have to find the time to read it.
Great review. That does sound like an excellent supplement. I wonder if it could be adapted to WFRP (and set in the Wh New World) or run using Call of Cthuhlu?
Another great review Professor. Due to its horrific nature, LOTFP often gets overlooked, but credit should always be given where it’s due. I’m a huge LOTFP supporter & I highly value uncensored creativity, as art should be allowed to be just that, free expression. I’m hoping to pick this one up. I’ve bumped up LOTFP to the top of my all time favorites after reading Zack S. Vornheim & A Red & Pleasant Land. If I ever have material published, I’d love to work with LOTFP!
LotFP gets usually over looked because the publisher publicly supported a rapist and still sells his stuff. Including an adventure specifically about that event.
@ I’m aware of this, but I’m also aware of the great material I would have missed if I were the type of person that cared more about politics & the personal lives of people & the mistakes they make. Im here for the games, & LOTFP is fkn awesome.
@@PetesDracolichof course you're aware and don't care. Enough to intentionally mislead the unaware about why the publisher is "overlooked" and turn that into a moralising point about censorship.
