funny thing about this, the Chiefs proposed a rule change a couple years prior to give both teams a chance to touch the ball in overtime. Majority of the teams voted no and one of those teams was the Bills.
It's a tough call. Over the course of a season, the new rule means more overtime snaps, which represent an added risk of injury, and more time needed to recover, so it can affect you the following week(s).
And it shouldn’t have ever been changed. At some point the defense has to make a stop if you want to win. If both teams score it just becomes sudden death again. Dumb rule change.

Sadly they lost the AFC Championship game that yr to the Bengals. And just so you know .. we refer to them as the Chiefs, or KC . Because there is a state here in the US named Kansas , the Chiefs are not actually in that state , they are in the next state over called Missouri. These two states shared a city right on each boarder called Kansas City. But the Chiefs are in the Missouri side. I know it’s very confusing lol but fans from Missouri get deeply offended calling the Chiefs Kansas. I only mentioned because if your wanting to learn American football this is all part of it. Want to know what makes this more impressive? Kelce called both plays on the :13 drive. In the huddle he said if Hill follows him up the seam he'll have an easy catch and down behind Kelce to get a big chunk and save clock. Then he said if Kelce's defender is on outside shoulder coverage he would have a straight shot up the seam for Mahomes to hit him in stride. Mahomes saw that coverage, called out "Do It Kelc" and hit him in stride. Kelce reads and understands defenses as well as most QBs in the league and I do believe that drive was his doing.
9:24 - in NFL Overtime if one team kicks a field goal on their first possession then the opposing team gets a chance with the ball. But if one team scores a Touchdown in their first OT possession then the games over
In the NFL during the regular season the OT rules are the first team to score wins the game as long as the first possession of OT ends in a Field Goal. In that case the other team gets the chance to match it or score a touchdown. After that the first score of any kind wins. During the postseason, if the first team to touch the ball gets a field goal or touchdown then the other team gets a chance to posses the ball and try to match it. OT is one 10 min quarter, if the scores are still tied, the game ends in a tie. During the postseason, the OT is 15 minutes long. If it's still tied, they switch directions and add another 15 min.
I would definitely watch highlights of Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson. I would say Jalen Hurts too but he just got good this past season
You should watch the highlights of that rams chiefs game from Nov 19 2018 or better yet watch the full game and edit it down was a beautiful game one of the best/ highest scoring of all time
Packers vs Cardinals 2009 NFC Wildcard Game on "All Highlights" RUclips channel . That game was loaded with talent and it had everything a great game needs. Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Charles Woodson, Sam Shields, Donald Driver, Carlos Dansby, Beanie Wells, Dominic Rodgers-Cromartie, Steve Breston and Early Doucette. What a game it was.
Bills should have squibbed the kick with 13 seconds to go, which would've taken time off the clock. KC got the ball with all 13 seconds. They boomed the kick out of the end zone, rather than forcing KC to waste time fielding a bouncing knuckle ball and trying to stop the clock.
At the time of this game there was no special overtime (OT) rule for the NFL. Because of this game, and in part the Chiefs vs Patriots AFC Championship game two seasons prior, they changed the OT rule ONLY for the playoffs. If the team of first possession gets a TD then the opposing team gets a chance. After that normal OT rules apply.
You guys talking about Buffalo being that team that get so close only to lose. Well you couldn’t be more right they went to 4 straight Super Bowls at one point and lost 4 straight Super Bowls. Oh and you only get a chance in overtime if the team scores a field goal, A touchdown on the first possession ends it. Kind of a messed up way to end it, if u don’t win coin toss you might never touch the ball.
Lol, it's so funny their first reaction was "they don't get to have the ball?". Because that's all anybody would talk about for months after this game. And then they ultimately changed the rules to make it so in the playoffs both teams get a possession. It used to be that ALL overtime games ended on the first score, even a field goal. So all anybody wanted was to win the coin toss and then kick a FG as soon as they got in range to end the game.
Absolutely love this review. Couple things though. First one and the MOST important. The Chiefs are in Kansas City, Missouri, NOT Kansas. Second, the NFL changed the OT rules because of this game.
So, this game was the final nail in the coffin for "a touchdown wins the game in overtime". There had been numerous attempts over the years for both teams to get possession of the ball, but it had been shot down. With as crazy as this game was, the league FINALLY realized that it would be even more polarizing if both teams at least got a shot at possessing the ball and making the game potentially come down to the last few seconds. Now, this rule change only applies in the post season. So regular season games can still end in this way. . .with a touchdown by the first team who gets the ball. But at least it gives the opposing teams a chance to actually try and stay in the game in the post season. The Chiefs lost in 2018 in the same fashion to the Patriots. It just comes down to what team has enough gas in the tank and who wants it more in the end now.
The rules of over time in football at that time was first touchdown automatic win, field goal the other team gets an opportunity to score a field goal, or win with a touchdown. The rules now I believe have changed, both teams get an opportunity even with the first touchdown scored in over time.
Only in college football does the other team get a chance to score too. Also, in college football the player only has to have one foot down after a catch (sideline throw/pass) and if a player falls down after a catch then they are ruled down, meaning a defender touching him isn't required for him to be down.
Overtime rules in the NFL are like this: If the first team in OT scores a TD, it's game over. If they only score a field goal, the other team gets a chance to either tie or win the game with a TD.
You're both right. At time of that game, if first team TD's it's over. If the first team gets FG, other team gets chance. Now, both teams get chance to TD if first TD's.
Guys, the rule is that if the Chiefs had kicked a field goal, the bills get the ball as well. If the 1st team to have the ball scores a TD or if there is a defensive score the game ends right then. That's why the Chiefs didn't just kick a FG when they got down close there.
The rule at the time was that if you score a touchdown on your first possession, the game is over. This happened to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship in 2019 (2018 season). The Patriots won the coin toss in overtime and scored a touchdown to win the game. No rules were changed. After this game between the Chiefs and Bills, the NFL finally decided to change the rules to allow both teams to have a possession, regardless of the outcome, but only in the postseason (playoffs). In other words, when the rule hurt the Chiefs, no rule change. But when the rule benefitted the Chiefs, time to change the rules.
I would say the chiefs are more “Typical Citeh” in their history prior to drafting Mahomes (coming from a Chiefs and Man city fan). It was always something that happened that would have the season end in heartbreak
The NFL OT used to be whoever scored first wins, 2021 in the playoffs they changed the rule to if it's a FG the other team gets a possession but if a Team scores a Touchdown the game was over. BECAUSE of this game they have changed the rule again lol Both teams will now get at least one possession, even if the team that has the first possession scores a touchdown.
This is why you save your timeouts. You never know when you'll need them. Don't waste them to avoid a delay of game penalty, the 5 yards in the 3rd quarter are not worth the 40 seconds in the 4th quarter.
They changed the rules because of this game. It used to be if the team made a field goal kick, the other team could have a chance. Now it's touchdown for touchdown. By the way this game was to see who goes to the Superbowl. Afc championship game.
OT has changed a few times in the past like decade but as it stands if the first team gets a TD they win. If the first team only gets a field goal then the second team gets a chance, field goal tie's them and TD wins them the game. If neither team scores within the time period it's a tie
At that point a touchdown would win but a field goal would give the other team a chance. They changed the rules after this to give both teams a possession no matter if the team that gets the ball first scores a touchdown or field goal. As has been mentioned, the Chiefs asked for this rule change a couple of years before because Tom Brady did the same thing to the Chiefs. Amusingly the Bills voted against that and it was not put into place at that time. Crazy but true, previous OT rules were first team to score in any way wins. That meant field goal or otherwise. That was changed a while back.
Okay the OT rules have been tricky since 09/10. Before the 2010 NFC Championship Game, the OT rules required only one one team to win FG or TD. After some controversy the league changed the rules where one team who kicks a FG, the other team has the right to score to tie, where after that the next score wins; but if the first OT possession ends in a TD that team wins unless the other team gains a pick 6. Those updated rules were efficient until the Chiefs/Bills OT divisional game you just saw. A lot of people didn't like seeing Allen on the sidelines; ultimately the league changed the OT rules once again where after the first team scores TD or FG, the next team will have a turn unless they get stopped or Int.
That Man City thing is apt. It wasn't for 17 years (I've heard Josh Allen took the number 17 for that stretch when the Bills missed the playoffs every year, that actually ended with Tyrod Taylor under center but not really being a game changer, so they really did trade up hard to be able to pick him the very next year). But it was for four years in the 90's, and it's been that way for about four years in a row now. They really do have the personnel to do it, but they're just not able to put it all together just yet. (Okay, Madden thinks their offensive line is patchy, but still. Probably why I always try to play the game with Tampa. /aside)
Love the reaction as usual. If I have one criticism (and it’s not your fault as you wouldn’t be expected to know), it’s that you continue to call them “Kansas.” Kansas City is in the state of MISSOURI and the city actually predates the state of Kansas. Calling them the Kansas Chiefs is a mistake that many Americans also make (though they SHOULD know better) and it isn’t important to many, but it is incorrect. Great video as always though. Cheers!
The Bills kicker screwed up by kicking the ball out of the end zone with 13 seconds left. If he squib kicked it, the Chiefs player would've been forced to return it, and that would've burned some time off the clock
Used to be... If you get a FG the other team gets a chance... If you get a TD game over... PM#15 1st year as a starter he lost in overtime to Brady and the Pats because Pats scored a TD on the opening drive. Chiefs petitioned to change the rule...denied! 2 years later the Chiefs win in the same fashion and the Bills petition to change the rule...accepted! Now both teams get 1 chance each regardless.

But if one team scores a Touchdown in their first OT possession then the games over
Love the channel men!! Keep it up!!
Yes it was, one heck of a game
13 seconds. Then the Chiefs kingdom went on the charity for Josh Allen and donated millions of dollars in increments of 13 or 130 or 1300 dollars.
You should watch the highlights of that rams chiefs game from Nov 19 2018 or better yet watch the full game and edit it down was a beautiful game one of the best/ highest scoring of all time
It was the highest scoring oat
I can still see the game. Cost me 10 years of my life. Still, an incredibly crazy game.
Just a note... KC Chiefs are in Kansas City Missouri, not Kansas. Love the videos and the real interest in American football
Daz has an incredible eye for the game for not being a native NFL fan
He did live in America for years.
Just a big sports fan 👍🏻
My favorite game ever, if I had to pick one. Go Chiefs! Thanks, mates.
Happy Father’s Day Daz
Its Kansas City, not just Kansas.
Great reaction. Would love to see you check out Josh allens career highlights, he's still young and has already been an absolute menace.
You guys need to do Titans vs. Lions week 3, 2012. They call it the craziest game no one has ever seen
Just one of many epic playoff games for the Chiefs in the Mahomes era!
The rules of over time in football at that time was first touchdown automatic win, field goal the other team gets an opportunity to score a field goal, or win with a touchdown. The rules now I believe have changed, both teams get an opportunity even with the first touchdown scored in over time.
LOL salty Bills fans on this comment thread. Better team won, fairly obvious. Next time don't leave time on the clock
They have since changed the rule so both teams have a chance to possess the ball in OT. This last SB was played under the new OT rules.
They changed the rule since this game. First TD wins was the rule, now both teams get a possession in the playoffs in overtime
Only in college football does the other team get a chance to score too. Also, in college football the player only has to have one foot down after a catch (sideline throw/pass) and if a player falls down after a catch then they are ruled down, meaning a defender touching him isn't required for him to be down.
Best 3 channels: blokes, sophie, sports.. know me too well 🤣😂
As a chiefs fan what an amazing game but bitter sweet since the next week they chocked and blew 21-3 lead to the Bengals
And they haven't lost in the playoffs since
Overtime rules in the NFL are like this:
If the first team in OT scores a TD, it's game over. If they only score a field goal, the other team gets a chance to either tie or win the game with a TD.
Greatest Game EVER played
Overtime rules:
If you score a field goal, the other team gets a try. If you score a touchdown it’s over sudden death.
In overtime, its the first person to score wins. unless the team that gets it first only get a field goal. then the other team gets a chance
The Rams won the super bowl that year Rams vs Bengals
It was first touchdown in that year but due to how this game turned out they changed it to each team gets 1 possession
This game changed the OT rules in the playoffs so that both teams get a chance in OT and play continues until there is a winner.
Trying to remember how that worked out for the Bengals . . .
sudden death. its changed in the payoffs now. each team gets the ball once & if tied after that goes to sudden death
This game alone changed the entire OT rules lol
When I saw British I assumed you spoke English.😄
Did you expect bowlers hats too?
@@officeblokedaz That would have been nice.
There are a lot of exciting endings to football games on youtube.
The Chiefs are always so lucky in these close games. It isn't fair!
Cry about it bum
If the first team scores its over if they just hit a field goal then thats when the other team has a chance to win!
city definitely did alright this year and didn't mess it up lol
First touchdown wins but if you do a field goal the other team gets a chance to score to win or tie up again.
