VIDEO BREAKDOWN (Like this so it gets to the top; he only covers NUMBER ONE btw):
    1. Use your LEFT finger (or a pen but with your left hand for a visual pacer) this is so your brain fires more from the visual hemisphere. Your eyes also flicker constantly without you being aware of it. You can look in the mirror under dim lighting for proof. The pacer keeps your eyes from making these small adjustments which is the biggest cause for losing your place (and then having to retrace your steps).
    2. Start training with your peripheral vision. Start small. Take away the first words from each side. Later (much later, don’t worry about this step as it’s the most depressing to master) you will be able to take away more words from the sides and start skimming.
    3. Your brain has read the same words over and over, small word like “of, a, in, right” these are non-content words or (can’t remember the exact colloquial) but they are filler words that we can easily skim over and read for content words. Once you are used to combining this technique it will be get faster as your brain fires and wires this new direction for connecting important words as images with filler words coming in without effort.
    4. The biggest thing is SELF-TALK. Or speech inside your heads. We all talk as we read inside our heads. Many techniques you can find to try and stop, one does not work for all. Here are some I remember: counting. And this can go with your peripheral skimming practice. Separate the page into three columns. Imagine hitting each mark with your eyes. From left. 1. Middle. 2. Right. 3. Each time your eyes hit a point. Say counters or even the alphabet. This will limit the number of words you say to yourself as you read. An even bigger one is LISTENING TO CLASSICAL MUSIC. Music with words/lyrics will not work. You need to listen to instruments as they fill the noise in your brain. Try it. See if this works for you. Putting it on repeat so your brain desensitizes it’s attention from the changes.
    5. I think you can also go through the book before you read it by using a highlighter but I’m not sure about this or what you should be highlighting *shrug*. Sorry!
    6. Lastly, I’ve found that it helps to meditate before reading. In a way it quiets the brain and it allows the words to be processed more objectively than running through a subjective filter.
If any of this helps, I’m glad! Please leave other helpful tips in the comments for people to find these all in one place. Thanks!

@JimKwik thank you for sharing this with the world. I love your tips and videos on memory including this one. I took the test over 5mins instead of 1min and recorded a 26% improvement with the visual pacer trick. That’s fascinating! I’m very excited because I could never understand why I get bored midway through reading books and never finish them. Quick disclaimer, I’m not American by birth and English is my 4th language. So early on, my slow reading may have been due to my lack of familiarity with a lot of the American/English vocabulary. But this trick clearly works! I haven’t listened to your video on reading a book/week yet. But I’m doing that right after this. I can’t wait to see the results over the next few days. I just got a hardcover book in the mail today. So perfect timing to try it out.

I'm only 7 minutes into the video was I was mindblown. I wanted to read this short book - 283 pages. Its non fiction. By doing that short little exercise of timing how many words I could read in 1 minute, I was shocked to see that I read a page a minute and that's at an average reading speed. I should be able to finish reading this book in about 4 hours, maybe faster. There was a time I could read a book a day or 2 a week when I had other things to do and not enough time. I'm watching these videos because somewhere in the last 8 years I stopped reading. I find my mind isn't that sharp anymore and I'm not as articulate. Hopefully I can use these tips and regain the brain of my student days.

Using your finger a visual pacer seems very basic but it has a huge impact and I went from 350 words p/m to 385 words p/m which is a 10% improvement. I'm sure there is a way to increase this a little more. However, I like the fact that using touch and sight will actually improve memory retention, all this makes sense as all your senses are linked by the hippocampus which marshalls all of the memories we have and converts short term to longer term. Lets try and get that to 50%!

Try using a visual pacer when you're reading (like your finger), see if your focus and speed's been improved.

Ok so I'm trying to decide whether or not to listen to your other material or if you're a hack. As someone that's been speed reading for twenty years at a 60-80% retention rate (depending on fiction or non-fiction/text books). This is EXACTLY how I read. Nice work, very impressed.

    1. be interested in what your reading
    2. use a visual guide to underline your reading as you go line by line

Hey Jim, i am very fortunate to bump into this video of yours randomly on the you tube, and just to say i am really impressed. Being Indian, my English is just average and cannot comprehend many such words and texts. I am a student and often busy with my project and other work. I try to read as many Indian books but again i often encounter the problem of slow or distracted reading. I also want expand my vocabulary and use my skills in report writing and presentation. Frankly speaking i cannot read books of foreign (native English authors) authors. How can i overcome this problem and improve myself.

10minute intro is a bit long for someone teaching on effective use of time. I almost turned it off before you got the real point!

    • @richardstemle6019

It's not really an intro, it's to emphasize why this skill may be important and how it differs from other techniques.

Ha! Yeah I noted the irony of that as well!
And yeah, 10+ minutes before getting to the meat of it seems a bit much, especially for a video that's only 16:28 long.
Not to mention the fact that there are TWO ad breaks during that long intro, before he really gets down to business.
I'm new to this guy.... He seems to have some good info, but if all his stuff is like this, I'll either have to fast forward half the vids or skip them entirely...
And sure, some of that is explanation why speed reading is good... But if you're watching a "how to speed read video," presumably you don't need to be convinced it's a good thing-- you already want to learn-- that's why you're watching in the first place.
Not to mention, if you HAVE seen other vids of this guy, you've probably heard some or all of that spiel anyway...
EDIT: And it actually ends at about 14:13! Holy shit-- that's even worse.
And apparently it's one tip-- use a pacer / visual cue, like moving your finger across the line.
He needed a 16:28 video, and 2 ads (on top of promoting his own brand and products) to express that simple idea?
Well, I don't feel like that just SAVED me a bunch of time...
My "kwik brain" doesn't want to listen to 14+ minutes of ads and background info to get a single short tip. That's... A bit much.
      And it's anything but "quick."

    Ability to read faster.
    Leaders are readers.
    1. Keep a book list. Active book list. To do list, not do to list, learn list, read list.
    2. Test your reading speed. Pick a book put 60s timer. After done, count the number of line in 60s. Gives you line per minute. Multiply by 10.
    3. Median words 64,000. 45 minutes reading a day.
    4. Schedule your reading. Physical exercise. Reading faster. Schedule around a time that you can execute. Make it time with your boss, investor. One that you cannot cancel.
    5. 45 minutes a day. Book a week. 52 books a year.
Speed reading more to smart reading.

I am learning to read faster. Still hitting some road blocks but with intentional focus I can read faster. I pick out the key points and bypass the words I recognize. The biggest thing for me to overcome is reading in my mind. That is my biggest road block is internal reading out loud. I love the Equalizer playing in your video. I've been trying to find an app or site that allows me to upload audio and download an image of an equalizer or something similar with color to put in my audio videos.

Here's one you may find strange. Why is it I remember things better though negative experience, or things I don't want to remember, I find I do remember. Not always negative experience, some positive one's too, but though I don't want to remember these things I always do.

Hi. Jim thanks for your great support. I wished there were more tips in this podcast. However this is great.
I'm reading for my psychology degree at a mature age. So, I faced numerous challenges but in love with growing myself, memory etc. As you know Psych. Relies on too much of info. To read. And it's a tedious task. Feels I'm bit behind because of reading takes too long and end up taking all the notes. As I have to spend most of the time in front of computer this get bored even if in love the subject and learning.
I do feel my focus distracts as well as I'm suffering from sleep problems due to suffering with IBS.
Could you kindly help me with more tips that I could apply daily. I do yoga and deep breathing to improve my self too.
    Awaiting an answer. Much appreciated.

Key Takeaway: You think you know about reading. However, could learn so much more by learning more about reading. An easy way to do that is though an pacer to help move eyes in motion and hence reduce the amount of distractions the eye has to face
