He will only be able to talk about the things he knows...And even that's a stretch, he will have no friends, and will have a hard time making any form of friends when he's older. His life is being ruined...If he has a choice, when his mom's older and is asking for him to take care of her, he should just leave her or put her through the same things that she put him through....xD

My only free time is sleeping to get away from reality.

Chang Liu i feel sorry for strict parents who raised their under extreme strict rules. Then when the kids get older, the son / daughter they thought they raised would be successful when they get a job. They (child) ends up being a killer. I pray nightly for the those in third world countries and parents raising strict kids, hoping they will become successful doctors ; attorney etc.

Awful! I was raised this way and it was terrible. I was stressed and burned out by 14. It's too much for a child. I had no time to relax. I had no childhood. I was expected to act and be like an adult from day one.

Korea is the worst because teachers don't call you by your name but by your grade rank instead so if you are bad you get called your bad rank everyday and are prone to bullying making the bad stay bad. Even kids who graduate from SNU in Korea may even end up being a taxi driver due to a small job market.

He's 9, right? He's not getting enough sleep. Reccomended that kids 7-13 years get 9-11 hours of sleep a night.
If this kid fells asleep the second he was allowed to lay down which is not how sleep actually works for humans he's getting at most 8 hours of sleep but you know that kids too stressed out to do so. This is awful. Why is this allowed?

And we wonder why they have such a high suicide rate. Look at the kids in Finland and the Netherlands, both top 10 countries in education and because they let the kids be kids. School starts later so they can get more sleep, they are allowed much more play time in the primary years, and most importantly THEY ARE HAPPY. Seriously, happiness is paramount especially to a child, because sadly in this world that is the only time when one is truly happy. Your kid is going to die one day and none of your rigorous training will matter. All that will matter is if they enjoyed the life they lived, and lived it to its full extent. Please think it over, what you are doing to your son.

Same. But I’m not allowed to play on school nights. Only Friday nights and Saturdays. But my weekends are all taken up by marching band. So I basically have no free time. ( on weekdays I have to study and do work, or else I’m called “lazy”. They also call me lazy for getting bad grades. Meanwhile it’s not me being lazy, it’s just me having trouble with the content in the class. To them, bad grades= lazy. Which doesn’t make any sense. If I actually understood the stuff I had in class, and they helped me, my grades would be better. It’s like if I get below and 85, they restrict my free time even more.

This entire "tiger mom" concept does more harm than good. There's no point. American kids who are not subjected to this treatment turn out just fine. In fact, I don't know of any really successful person who grew up doing nothing but studying, especially not in the US. I'm starting to think that parents who do this are just trying to live vicariously through their children, forcing the kids to make up for their parents' own shortcomings. Asian kids are often just bragging points for their parents (and I have experienced this, although I think my parents are fine) to feel better about themselves. They do this for their own pride, and increasingly less for their children's success.

Emma Frost It’s not overprotecting, it’s stress. The parents are giving the child stress, more stress than an average little kid is supposed to have. If they really were gonna actually protect that kid, they wouldn’t have been stressing him out with all those activities, and stress him out with his grades. That’s harming the child mentally, not protecting the child at all.

so asian parents want their kids to go to an ivy league school so they try to make their kid exactly like this other kid they heard about that got into Harvard. Lately though, the fact that ivy league schools look for diversity and uniqueness in applicants has become known to asian parents so they try to squeeze in something random along with all the other stuff. For a me it was bicycle repair. For this kids it is latin dance. (I'm Chinese btw. James is an alias. )

I have a tiger mom and when I explain it to my American friends, THEY DON’T ME AT ALL, they think I’m a liar. Even my Asian friends don’t believe me because their parents are westernized. My parents are the first generation to move to America so they are heavily influenced under Chinese culture and they put it on me. I never really had a childhood because that when they really did bad stuff to me like beat me up (Note: this was when I started to learn 911 and I didn’t want to lose my parents because they are still my parents). So you Americans, don’t bully us at school because we already had enough.

Story of my childhood. It was torture. Every night- late at 1am when everyone's asleep, I'd stared for hours more into the night sky and ask myself "Why is this happening? When does this end? "I just want to be free". Follow their orders to the T or get beaten. Sometimes I get beaten even when I don't know why. Practiced piano for 2 hours instead of 3 hours on my birthday......went to school with a swollen face the next day. I had no friends. I had no confidence. Loneliness made my grades drop followed by further wrath and beating. They dragged me out of my room one night when I was asleep and threw me out. I don't know why. I didn't know where to go. I just sat around my backyard. Then they let me back in after a few hours.
The moment I thought I was old enough I fought him "The balrog of morgoth" until at least I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside". Naaa. I didn't win. I did hundreds of pushups every night hoping I would become strong enough. Nope. I didn't get any stronger. Still bones weighing 100ib.
When I was 17-18, I became interested in science, saw it as a way out, and it was a way out.
Now they're trying to forget and make up for what they did to me now...and while I can tolerate them but I can't forgive them.

My mom has always wanted me to play guitar, do karate, do this , do that. since a young age, now as i am older (11-13) I am realizing i dont always have to follow everything she says if it doesn't make sense. i dropped out of karate almost a year ago cuz i reached black belt like she wanted me to and i didnt like the new instructor (his son hated me). She is trying to get me to rejoin and is saying "If you don't want to do something, just tell me. No point in wasting time and money of you don't want to do it." This might sound great but she has raised me always telling what she wants me to do and i don't want to dissapoint her. So whenever i talk about guitar, or we see a musical intrument on tv, she brings up that guitar is expensive and if you don't want to play it. I feel like she has always made my decisions for me, now when i have some freedom all i want to do i impress her. And i agree with the people above, she never praises me, whenever she asks me to play guiter for her and my dad, she looks unintrested and my dad is on his phone. I feel like I will never have a normal conversation with my parents, they will always bring something up. I think that is why my sister (who has just graduated from college) never calls home.

Yeah, it's a horrible idea. I'm Asian. When I was six, I had about the same amount of sleep, and even less than that on many days. At that young age, I was already frequently thinking about suicide back then. I felt suffocated back then. Later on, my family became poorer and moved into the ghetto in America. That was when my mom had to stop the craziness. I was much happier when my family was poorer. (It's A LOT better than suffocating every day). Thank God, because who knows how messed up I would've turned out if the craziness didn't stop. Ironically, after my mom's craziness stopped, my grades got better, I learned a computer programming language on my own, and I became better at sports.

Chained Trapped Impossible? With the help of Google, kids between 3-6 years old need 10 - 12 hours of sleep per day. And this kid is sleeping for only 6 hours per day!! Like what everyone says, he's gonna crash sooner or later. Let me assume youre around 12-19 years old, you need around 8 - 9 hours per day but sadly thats the idealistic number and like what you said, it can never happen!! (expecially when you waste your time browsing the internet :P lol) Adults tho, we need around 6-7 hours of sleep per day so this mother is total bulls.

In my country , at that age around 6 years only , parents will be set up tuition for their 6 years old children.
I sleep around 5 to 6 hours a day , the only bad thing that happen is headache that constantly attacking.
My country , when it comes to Chinese New year , all the relatives will be gathering and their favourite thing to do is to ask parents about their child progress and start comparing. Students are constantly being compared so they will rather sleep less and work more with the stress given by our parents.

One of my niece's swim mates has a mom like this and it just breaks my heart. That poor little girl has to swim at least 30 extra minutes after their session is done so she can get better. All I see is a 9 year old that will not improve because she's always beyond exhausted. =(

    • @pianoonparade
      @pianoonparade 8 лет назад +1

+Sweet y Salado 30 extra minutes really isn't that bad. my friends and I on the swim team used to do half an hour extra before and after swim practice (which was three times a week). and yes, that was around 9 years old too.

+M.R. Yan It's implied that the kid is doing a lot more than swimming to make them exhausted. But regardless, what is the point of this? Emphasising good physical fitness habits is great, but what is the purpose of draconian training? They will never grow as a person if everything they do is scheduled and forced. They will never be creative, interesting, or great. They probably won't even be good. You'll be lucky if they're not resentful and depressed and commit suicide. They're people, not rats.

You will break, will probably be something so minor and insignificant. The reason this will happen is because: your unconscious mind was never taught how to deal with stress - it has no frame of reference. I'd suggest yoga and meditation, so when the unconscious mind is ready to break, you'll have already implemented a way to handle it. I used to be a life coach :-)

i think you should start thinking and do some researches before you comment, if you are talking about "Asians commiting Suicide" i would refer the Japanese. and the video was about "Tiger moms" which is about Most Chinese moms... Most Japanese people do commit suicide because of stress , depression, fatigue and lack of communication with other people because of the technology. So most of them decides to commit suicide instead because they don't know or they don't think of sharing their problems to other people. Kids who were raised with Tiger Moms are either end up crazy or successful. but all i can say that those who were raised by them becomes self-centered, they do have higher expectations and standards, they are good in academics but not with socialization. and there are lots of Asians who aren't Chinese nor Japanese .. so I really find your thought about "Now i understand why so many Asians commit suicide" quite irrelevant.

Every parent wants good for the kids. But this mom is going too far. This kid is gonna be abusive and have social issues and trusting issues. Some parents have to love the children thy have and not try to get the children they think they should get. Tiger Moms are cool for me. I mean, my mom is a bit strict but she isn't a tiger. Bit my classmate has a tiger mom and she has a good relationship with her parents. But this kid is gonna think that he or she needs to get good grades because to that child, that's love. They don't really know what true love is. And all throughout their life, they'll think love means getting the best grades and having a lot of talent. I don't like this mom's tactics. This kid is gonna get brainwashed

If I was the child, I would probably be dead. 6 hours of sleep is bad for a child. Kids need 8 hours of sleep. In fact, all humans, young or old, need at least 8 or 9 hours of sleep. This child is not gonna be healthy no matter how much fruits or vegetables he or she eats. Sleep is important, especially for children. I'm starting to wonder if the mother knows that or she's an idiot

I really loved how you handled this topic. Coming from a Japanese upbringing in Michigan, a lot of points that you brought up (Fear of parents later in life, the face-saving, and the incorrect idea of what would help my kid) are spot on. There's a reason so many Asian kids are in therapy for depression, anxiety, and performance phobia and why in China, Japan, and South Korea so many students are committing suicide. This idea of packing a day full of learning may have worked 1-2 millennia ago, but in this day and age that's not possible, especially with everything getting Westernized

This is literally forced labor, and forced labor rarely makes geniuses(not statistically true, but you get the point). I agree with you, she's crazy, but what she's doing will drive him mad or have social issues, or if they get talented on the piano or whatever, they'll probably lie about being fine. People aren't getting that this labor, yes Asian parents do that, and yes people do get good and on television saying they're grateful, but out of the 500 million or so kids who experience that, how many say they're fine.
