I spent an entire Christmas Eve day to beat this bastard. I ate like 10 snickers bars. My technique was an insane sugar high. I would recommend this other way.
A tip for the first form: If you jump at the moment Dracula raises his hand, the fireballs will miss, allowing you to dodge and attack at the same time. The only way he will damage you is if he teleports into you and you can not get away fast enough. I did not know you can stun him with the holy water though, I always used the cross.
Just beat this game a few minutes ago. Even with the triple shot, and tons of hearts I found it to be ludicrously difficult. I used the cross through the whole battle. The first form for me was definitely harder than the second
Phase one is just timing memory, but the only hard part is that dracula sometimes just spawns inside of you and you take damage for free. For the second phase, holy water to stun then attack the head until hes dead.
@@plank8989 You just gotta keep moving. you'll get the rhythm of when he spawns, and make sure you're moving when you know he's going to appear. Give yourself room (not backed into a corner). Once I got the rhythm, I was able to beat him.
If you dont come in with that many hearts, learn the timings on his projectiles so you can jump over them ( be aware that if you jump before he shoots he will shoot up and youll be hit ) Then in the second phase, mix up holy water with whips to the face so he dies faster
OMG, dude, THANK YOU. It's almost a decade I had this game stuck in the second boss phase and I never, NEVER realized that you had to hit his HEAD to do high damage. Always got steamrolled by the "demon form" even doing a perfect "human form". Thanks a lot. Tonight a journey has come to an end.
I've died 200 times so far on the first form. The whip-jump timing is insane. I am either a split-second too late and my whip passes through his head or I'm too early and the fireballs hit me.
Took me forever to beat this. My strategy for the first phase was entirely dependent on two things: 1. Jumping over his fireballs the second they appear on screen, not a millisecond later or earlier. I found this to be considerably more consistent than breaking the fireballs with the whip, or jumping early so that he aims upwards. 2. Jumping and then throwing the cross when Dracula is OFF screen. The cross stays on screen long enough that you throwing it after he appears is making things harder on yourself. This sped up the fight by like 2-3x for me because of how often the cross would hit once or twice on its own. For second phase: 1. Good luck. I got good enough at first phase that I could enter 2nd phase with full health, and I still barely survived.
@Sarin Chhim hey. That was 3 years ago. Good luck. I found a good rhythm and Dracula got easier. Beating this on console is so much more satisfying. No save states to help you
This is not an easy fight, but I love the design of this encounter, phase one at least. I interpret Dracula’s entrance as a clue to his weakness. Initially the only part of him you can see…is the only part of him you can hurt. What do you notice about big D? Well, he big. About twice as big as you. His only vulnerable spot is out of your reach unless you jump. Ergo, you cannot win this fight without jumping (unless your timing with axes is impeccable I guess). Fittingly, the same way you have to attack him is the way you avoid his attacks. Jump over his fireballs and strike him in midair. My preference is to stay in the middle of the room as much as possible. With his teleport spam he gleefully tries to collision damage you to death, so it’s just something you have to be ready for. Occasionally however, he will teleport to the far side of the room. Your only chance of hitting him then is if you’ve been sticking to the center. In fact, I prefer to take a flying leap when I attack him since it helps me clear the fireballs more reliably, and fully capitalizes on the range of the whip as your weapon. Unfortunately phase two isn’t as fun since it’s highly cheesable with holy water. It’s almost necessary though, considering you die in four hits. The huge hitbox he has is deadly if he corners you. Where you strike the final blow of phase one can actually doom you in phase two if you didn’t manage to do phase one flawlessly. Only one of his jumps is high enough for you to run underneath, so if he’s positioned badly, you’re gonna take a hit. There are elements of this game that are utter bullshit, and doing it without save states is an exercise in madness. But the final battle is wonderfully crafted, well worth the effort to experience.
I have to say thank you. Though u posted this 11 years ago. Thus last while was the first time I tried to really beat this game. Your advise made a difference! Castlevania, consider yourself beaten!!

Great stuff. I remember finally beating Dracula's initial spawn and thinking I had won the game... then getting one-shot by the gargoyle who replaced him. Over and over and over. And with no RUclips to consult, I finally gave up in frustration and never returned to the game. Now I just might give it a go one more time.
Quite impressive to see that Old time JRose11 still has a similar voice. Never finished the og castlevania, but today, I learnt something. Thank you once again for the contant.
Jeff Garretson right now I have the game open on my NES and on my computer. I am practicing on the computer and once I'm confident I try on the NES. still very hard at least I can practice with the save States
I've struggled with this game since the early 90's. the last 2 levels are very difficult. Castlevania 3 is insanely hard. The Dracula fight in part 3 has 3 forms. You will need a nerve pill after a playing it for a while.
I usually load up on hearts and use the triple boomerang to take him out. I keep two or three boomerangs in the air going in both directions while I use the whip to stop the fireballs. I thought that was the obvious way to do it but this is cool too.
Actually well timed cross on first battle can give you 3 hits on his head because it acts like boomerang. Throw cross before he shows up and hit him with the whip. First the cross will hit him and it will come back hitting him second time. The last battle is easy too. When you are next to the wall - you need to crouch when he is next to you. When you crouch Cookie Monster makes higher jump instead of low one. Also when you are using holy water - spam it but also jump and hit him with the whip. Just jump use holy water. Jump use whip. Jump holy water etc. BAttle will be over much much quicker.
Yep, I’d throw the firebomb when I reached the top of my jumps, it would freeze the bat monster in place and let me keep taking pot shots at his head while he was stuck. Jump, firebomb, whip once or twice, jump and firebomb again. Monster would seldom get more than half a jump in.
I just beat Dracula for the first time, and the way I did it was that I threw the Cross boomerang at his head whenever he appeared to the very left or right of the screen (you might get two hits in one throw if you're lucky), then I spent the rest of the time focusing on avoiding him and destroying his projectiles. Then when I got to the second form I kept throwing the Cross like crazy and basically went all out, making sure to not get hit by his projectiles at the same time of course.
Why does every video show Dracula spawning far away but in the actual NES game he spawns right on top of me nearly every time?? Also, the jump over the fireballs has to be timed perfectly or the strike to the head does nothing.
you can also have more of a battle with the holy water when he's really close to you throw the Holy water to freeze him quickly walk past him you won't take damage for 1 second and when he's in front of you duck he will then take a high jump missing you.
Good method if you have the "heart" ammo. The safest way if you don't (Phase 1) is to jump over the projectiles and hit Dracula's head on the way down. Stay on your feet so he won't apparate directly on top of you and rinse and repeat; the hit box is only vulnerable for a fraction of a second, so your whip will pass through his head a lot (like 20-30 times). That makes it tedious to hit him all 16 times, but its the safest method I can think of if you are low on ammo. In Phase 2, you don't need a lot of hearts because Dracula's second form freezes for several seconds if you put a fire under him, leaving him vulnerable to 1-2 cracks of the whip directly to the head. You can take a hit or two in Phase 1 and still beat him if you are careful.
Dang. Another game for NES I had to go on RUclips to figure out how to beat. Simon's quest I had to go on numerous times. I did not think to hit Draculas head. Well here's to no patience. Lol cheers!
If you can time your jump just right, you can jump straight up as he spawns in, hit his head, and by the time you fall back down the fireballs will shoot upwards. Its a decent way to get through phase 1.
via NES Classic, I won the game using the boomerang, & several tries nearly an hour... A. When Drac vanishes, jump & throw boomerang, pref at neck level for double hit... he'll get hit with the boomerang in line as he reappears. Easy to whip his fire, just never jump & you can whip bottom 2 fireballs together. Repeat, & even load up for double/triple shots via fireball whips. B. the monster guy I defeated opening with boomerang shot when he also first appears, & whip his head with some intermittent boomerangs. Go crazy with whips, kills his fireballs, & my health stayed ahead of his long enough. Replaying game on harder setting was a b****h btw, I died 2x on the first room alone lols. Double bats was f'd.
Having major issues with his first form. I've been trying for an hour each day for about a month. I figure eventually I'll get lucky. Tried holy water, but it just depends on the angle of his fireballs in whether I'll get hit. Seemed to be much easier with boomerang on his first form.
M C Wait until after he fires to jump. If you jump too early he will change the angle of his shot. If you're standing on the ground when he shoots, the angle is always just right so that you can jump over it.
This is a good method, but ultimately did not work for me because I had trouble timing the holy water shots and it was far too tedious to collect around 60 hearts each time after you die, just to face him again. I was able to beat both forms of Dracula using the whip. Jumping back into battle right after I would die, kept my timing fresh and I was able to grasp his timing and movements much better. As far as the second form of Dracula, very beatable with the whip. There is a video on RUclips kind of exploiting his pattern - strike him twice, he jumps, you move with him, stay close so he cannot shoot fire at you, and when he follows you towards the end of the screen, kneel, he goes for the big jump - run under him and work your way back to the other side of the screen. Rinse and repeat. Dracula’s first form was more difficult for me, but once I made the decision to not collect the hearts and go the holy water route, he wasn’t too bad once I got the timing down.
I was so confused, it seems that in the Famicom Disk version, it doesn't do the big jump when you are at the end of the screen. That was so infuriating. I didn't understood why he was so strong suddenly !
well, good thing that there was a secret in Super castlevania 4 were it's invisible platform and then you go on the left of the screen and it gives you hearts,3 upgrade thingy, and the boomerang, so that makes a bit easier
Firebombs were always the best weapon for all the bosses. Even the vampire bat at the end of level one can be beaten with them without the player taking a hit. Grim Reaper can be killed in about 20 seconds with them. Just jump and toss one at his initial spawning point, then repeat, his spinning scythes never appear if your timing is right.
I spent so many hours playing this as a kid. I didn't know that dracula had 2 forms. I FINALLY beat the first form only to learn there's another and died immediately. I never played again and never beat the game.
My problem is I can never get the II and III upgrades for the holy water to spawn, no matter how many candles I whip and no matter how many of Dracula's fireballs I destroy. I'll be at 99 hearts and I'll think surely it'll drop sub-weapon upgrades now, and it still won't, even if I drag out the first phase. All these years later, I still can't get past this fight.
It took me a month to beat this game mainly because I couldn’t get past the Grim Reaper. About 2 hours later I beat Dracula ‘cause I was crazy determined!! I have system of doing it that’s actually quite simple...
Colin Hatton You need the triple shot boost. The only way to get to Drac with that weapon and the triple boost is to arrive in his lair with the Holy Water. Keep going up and down the stairs to respawn candles. Every tenth candle (or enemy but there are none here) will give you a boost and you must use the weapon, not the whip, to destroy candles. If you get the Holy Water in the lair you’re locked into the battle and can’t go downstairs to get more hearts or get the boosts. You’re stuck with a single shot and less than 20 hearts.
the holy water is unneccesary. just go with the "wait for him to open his cape and jump and whip him" if you are too far away, you still can simply jump the fireballs. the only reason i take damag from first form dracula is bad spawning, but im also pretty good about avoiding that. his spawn seems to relate to your prior movement/position/direction. but generally, never get yourself cornered. second form dracula, holy water does well to simply stun him and let you spam whip if you get cornered, it seems spamming the D-pad buttons, all of them has a high chance of making him high jump. but yea you can FARM hearts by going down the stairs to the prior stage. and then you can spam firewater the 2nd form
Unless you're a speedrunning booster who likes to use the damage boost or critical Hit glitch you don't need a triple shot of the holy water to beat the second form. The second form is not Dracula it's the Curse of man. All you need is the double shot and then you only need to jump straight up an alternate between throwing holy water and whipping as you jump.
All of you guys who struggle with the first form, I have advice for you. When you see his cape flinch, thats when you jump to avoid the triple fireballs and gash him in the face with the whip. Its kind of like facing Mike Tyson in Punch Out!! in that regard. Primitive game animations, but theyre indicative.
I cannot get the timing down to first form Dracula. I swear I'm doing exactly what I see here and in other videos, but they count maybe 1 in every 20 times I hit him. I can't tell if I'm too early, too late, too far, or what, but it looks exactly like this--right in the face after the fireballs--but doesn't count and I can't keep it up 300 or so attacks it would require at that rate.
I played this game when it was new in the 80s. I beat it too. I remember finally roasting this teleporting b@stard, unaware there was a second stage boss, which instantly clobbered me. Boy was I pissed! After lots of time, screaming, and thrown game controllers, I beat him. No cheat codes, no save states. Just persistence. And now I've come back for more on OpenEmu. What a glutton for punishment.
By the end stage, after dying a bunch, I can only get about 13 hearts before the fight. In his second form, hitting his body takes a million years to do any damage, but if you pin him down with holy water, you can strike at his head 2-3 times before he’s free again. His head is his weak spot. Once I figured that out, I got him on my second try. Damn this is a satisfying win. Getting to him was a challenge though. Some of these levels are a real slog. Death was a bitch. This game is so good!
Castlevania was always a favourite of mine. All the versions really were. But somehow over the years back in the day I had missed this. I know I have the opportunity to give it grief. However at the moment it seems to be giving me all the grief. Maybe my reactions of slowed down over the years. Well I am very late 60s.😮 But I do have a classic game Room. I'm currently in to stage 3 and at the moment very stuck😅
Damn, there’s a second stage, I’m struggling to get past the first since last November but have been using the crosses, which don’t do anything. I never realised storing all those hearts ♥️ would increase go’s etc, I was wondering what they were for. I’ve played this game so much I can 1cc past Frankenstein and Igor but ultimately gave up and used a save state the 20th time I got to Dracula 🧛♂️. Great video, I’m gonna put it in to practice.
I just finished it! This video did have a great tip, jumping over the fireballs, but I found the rest kinda useless. Hitting Drac’s head with the whip is nearly impossible unless you time the jump to the split-second, which is impossible. I wanted to try the Holy Water on Demon Drac but I couldn’t survive that long with just the Holy Water. Plus, if you get the Holy Water you’re locked into the final battle and can’t collect anymore hearts. So I used the Holy Cross. Going down and up the stairs respawns the candles so you can collect mad hearts (I’d usually get 50 before fighting Drac) and get both weapon boosts. Just before you take on the Prince of Darkness hit the candle containing the Holy Water and let it expire. Then just start jumping and throwing the Holy Cross, all the while being on the move and keeping out of Dracula’s way and avoiding those fireballs. I found it easier to jump and throw the cross while turned away from Dracula. I stayed alive much longer that way, and the crosses will eventually wear him down since they travel in two directions. When Drac loses his head face Demon Drac directly and employ the jump-&-throw technique while avoiding the fireballs. When Demon Drac gets close to you run under him QUICKLY when he jumps. Run to the far side of the screen and continue the assault. With a little luck you’ll beat him after a few passes across the screen.
You can collect hearts by going in and out of Dracula's crypt stage, causing candles to respawn for a great resupply of hearts. And the real trick with timing Dracula's fireballs is to watch when his hand appears, then jump and hit with the whip. Always move some to keep him from teleporting right on top of you (not always successful, in my case), and then when he transforms, keep spamming him with holy water and the whip. Luckily, Holy Water is an easy weapon against most bosses, Hunchbacks, and Axe Armors, as well as good ol' Grim
The fight would be ten times easier if he didn't spawn on you.
So true
FUCKING A RIGHT!!!!!!!
You could have beaten more easily dracula with the badge boost glitch

This is actually fantastic. I'd love to see something like this with Modern Jrose11. Especially with the Count von Count voice. 😅
Mickbarrel Thanks for taking the time to reply. The strategy you say, seems like it would be effective. Will definitely try it.
I had my frame rate settings on 30 so that he would just spawn inside you so I thought this boss was impossible
Now I feel stupid
Huh, who woulda guessed that Jrose was gonna be the one to help me beat Dracula
The best way to beat Dracula is with the cross, his final form is not really a problem, you just need to stay close to him and hit him
This is a good method, but ultimately did not work for me because I had trouble timing the holy water shots and it was far too tedious to collect around 60 hearts each time after you die, just to face him again.
Thank you for this comment. I always wanted to know how to beat Dracula with whip only, and this comment made him trivial now.
oh hey, I was looking up quick kill vids to make a joke to a friend and what'd I find. Neat.
Wow we come this far
But can you beat Dracula with only a Feebas?
well, good thing that there was a secret in Super castlevania 4 were it's invisible platform and then you go on the left of the screen and it gives you hearts,3 upgrade thingy, and the boomerang, so that makes a bit easier
Say it with me the “BADGE……..BOOST…….GLITCH!!!!!!”
10 years too late?
How in the hell are you throwing 3 the game will only allow me to throw 1
he go the triple shot. notice that red block with III in it? there is also a double shot. it's white with II in it.
Well I beat Dracula with using one at a time and as a result...I popped all of nervous....worth it
I still remember everytime I died when Dracula was on his second form with 1 health point.
Oh....
This fight actually reminds me of
TerminalMontage's
"Something about Castlevania"
Which is pretty accurate.
You go up and down the stairs to respawn the candles and collect hearts. And umm... when you continue you start at dracula with full health.
Thanks. It worked out nicely
If your on anniversary collection, just save every time you hit him and reload when you get hit. If your ok with save scrumming that is.
Wait holy shit I thought this ten year old tutorial was made by some random dude, not by jrose, that explains why your voice was so familiar
I spent so many hours playing this as a kid. I didn't know that dracula had 2 forms. I FINALLY beat the first form only to learn there's another and died immediately. I never played again and never beat the game.
The 1 and most likely only non pokemon related video
My problem is I can never get the II and III upgrades for the holy water to spawn, no matter how many candles I whip and no matter how many of Dracula's fireballs I destroy. I'll be at 99 hearts and I'll think surely it'll drop sub-weapon upgrades now, and it still won't, even if I drag out the first phase. All these years later, I still can't get past this fight.
funny how things turned out
how did his voice not change in 10 years?
My voice hasn't changed since I was like 14 haha
@@Jrose11 damn. Over the past 6 years my voice is only 4% deeper lol
@@Jrose11 what the
It took me a month to beat this game mainly because I couldn’t get past the Grim Reaper. About 2 hours later I beat Dracula ‘cause I was crazy determined!! I have system of doing it that’s actually quite simple...
I can't throw 3 holy water at a time like that.
You’re stuck with a single shot and less than 20 hearts.
the holy water is unneccesary. just go with the "wait for him to open his cape and jump and whip him"
if you are too far away, you still can simply jump the fireballs.
the only reason i take damag from first form dracula is bad spawning, but im also pretty good about avoiding that. his spawn seems to relate to your prior movement/position/direction. but generally, never get yourself cornered.
second form dracula, holy water does well to simply stun him and let you spam whip
if you get cornered, it seems spamming the D-pad buttons, all of them has a high chance of making him high jump.
but yea you can FARM hearts by going down the stairs to the prior stage. and then you can spam firewater the 2nd form
Nice. I'm stuck on him right now.
Just use the badge boost glitch and hope dracula uses rage to win easily
I don't know about you but the boomerang was a way better strategy if you have enough hearts
Well I am very late 60s.😮
But I do have a classic game Room.
I'm currently in to stage 3 and at the moment very stuck😅
Hardest game ever made, it took me at least 15 years to beat it for the first time.
It took me 2-3 weeks, but it is hard, and unfair
Matthew Gililland try Abadox for NES...I'm a die hard Castlevania fan and as hard as the series is...THAT game is impossible!
Lordy
Have you played castlevania 3?
maggie sermersheim Yeah, I’ve never beaten that one.
I’m playing this on the PS4 I tried to did Dracula in the head and it always misses. It’s only the odd bit that counts.
Finally I will finish the part 🤣🤣🤣
Great info 👍👍👍
When dracula turns around when i move past him as he is teleporting he moves a bit. I like to call it the double dip
You can beat grim and Frankenstein's monster pretty easily with the holy water but there's no loop hole with Dracula.
Very helpful, thanks!
But likely, if you are getting game over, you will start from the boss, unlike in later castlevania games.
