    🌟 About this video:
    So Lalique is a fragrance house that I only just tried this year and I've been impressed. They are affordable, in fact some are downright bargains, but I didn't try Amethyst, perhaps their most famous fragrance.
    The lovely Cassandra sent me a selection of samples from her collection and those included Amethyst and its two flankers. I'd heard and seen people compare Lalique Amethyst to Parfums de Marly Meliora and so I was curious to compare them myself. So in this video, I talk about whether Amethyst is a dupe that can fill that Meliora shaped hole in your collection and I also describe the flanker fragrances in the Amethyst perfume range.

    If I'm not mistaken, Amethyst came out in 2007 and Meliora in 2013, so I guess Meliora may have been inspired by Amethyst.

    I have both flankers, but not the OG.
    My favorite is the Éclat. It's fresh and juicy, smells like watery berries. But does have a bodywash vibe, I guess. It makes me feel energized. Love wearing it in the Summer to change things up and not only wear coconut fragrances.
    I don't wear the Exquise as much. It's darker and I don't really get a milkiness (I get wood vanilla at the base). It's not as fluffy and sweet as Si Fiori on my skin.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Год назад

      Hi Cat, I really enjoyed trying these! I think most people seem to really enjoy Éclat from the comments here. I don't have si Fiori, only a faint memory of it, so it was just that Exquise reminded me of it, so your impression of whether they are a similar idea is likely to be more accurate than mine I think!
      Thanks for watching ❤️ have a great Sunday 🥰

    I love Amethyst! It reminds me of the Body Shop Dewberry in a way that satisfies my soul on a deep level💆‍♀️(It’s funny to hear you describe the blackcurrant here as dry since everything about this one feels watery to me-which I like.) I came to Amethyst first and had the same experience when I got a sample of Meliora, thinking, “oh this is just like Amethyst.” I should try them side by side-just for fun since I can’t imagine ever being able to justify buying Meliora when I have Amethyst.
    The flankers sound like something I could see myself adding to cart if I’m on the cusp of getting free shipping😂
    Nashi pears smell very watery and crisp, somewhere between an apple and a pear but not as sweet as either. I tend to find it underwhelming in perfume (as much as I do enjoy wateriness in a lot of fragrances), but it’s one of my absolute favorite fruits to eat!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Год назад

      I had never heard of nashi pears, I had no clue what they were and the fragrance didn't smell like pear at all to me so I was confused 😂
      Blackcurrant is juicy and deep and full normally but here it's just dry like you've drunk some undiluted ribena cordial by mistake, just not that level of sweetness though!
      The flankers are pleasant but not unique. I definitely think if you don't forensically examine Meliora and Amethyst they instantly make you think of the other fragrance! I was quite surprised at how dissimilar they were side by side though! Thanks for watching ❤️

    God it’s so fascinating to hear how the same perfumes smell to other people! I think Eclat smells similar to me as it does to you, but it is way too shampooey for me personally so it’s in my declutter pile!
    When I first got Exquise it honesty reminded me of Dior Poison….. something about just gave me the same feeling but without the incense. I get the muskiest Orchid from Exquise and not much heliotrope at all! I find it sexy but unfortunately the last time I tried it I sensed that odd synthetic wood smell that many modern perfumes have and it just smells like tar to me, so I’m gonna have to declutter that one too and I’m sad about it! It made me feel quite sultry that one!
    The original Amethyst smells like a forest full of berry’s in the form of a bar soap to me and the more I wore it the more obsessed I became! I prefer it in colder weather for sure. In hotter weather I swear I smell blueberries! I’m never sure what notes to trust of course but I really got a blueberry vibe last time I wore it! I never found it sexy but my husband definitely finds it sexaaaay 😂
    I don’t know Meliora well but if Nathalie Lorson created Amethyst first and then Meliora a few years later it makes sense that there are similarities…. Maybe a more refined and easier to wear version of one of her older perfumes. Amethyst is such a unique scent that I understand why a perfumer would want to play around with it and borrow elements for new things!
    Great review, as always!

      Hi Cassandra! Thank you so much for the samples. I really enjoyed trying them. Éclat really wasn't for me but I liked the Exquise and as for Amethyst, the thick musk got a bit much at the end, but I loved the opening.
      I think Meliora is just way overpriced sadly, a nice fragrance but just so much hype... I actually didn't realise these were by the same perfumer, the passing similarity makes a lot more sense now. 🤣 Thanks for watching ❤️

  • @Jenn_N
    @Jenn_N Год назад +2

    Hello Claire,
    I had thought that Amethyst was Nathalie Lorson's work before she created Meliora for PDM. It certainly explains why they are so similar. I expect the budget for nicer fragrance materials could be used for the PDM over the Lalique considering the price difference between the two perfumes. I haven't smelled Amethyst but I have cone close to wanting to blind buy it to check it out because it appears affordable next to Meliora.
    Thanks for your video! 🌸

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Год назад

      Yes! I do think they have a passing similarity. And for sure amethyst is a bargain in comparison, but yes the musk in amethyst is less nice to me. I don't think I need any of these fragrances. I love sampling, it saves me so much money 😂 thanks for watching ❤️

I had a very specific time to wear it and thought it was not worth it but now I miss it! My husband loved it too and always noticed it… I bought so many perfume since then but I still don’t have something similar to this. Maybe I should get it back? 😂 Have a great weekend!

    I bought Amethyst stright after they released it, in 2007. At that time most scents were flowery and quite complex and mature. This one was youthfull, uplifting, fruity green - tart black currant, berries, black currant leaves and peony. I liked the scent very much, although I had the biggest bottle and finally got tired of it. I haven't smelled Meliora yet but I definitely see similarities between Amethyst and Gucci Guilty Absolute.

    Great video as ever
    Meliora was an OK one to me but had that PDM factor that spoilt my enjoyment. I did however quite enjoy Amethyst it didn't have the acky harshness. I would never have thought this were similar u know. Mind u I'd smelt them far apart.
    The next one sounds quite pleasant, though I'm not a bigger creamy soapy kinda chap.
    I think the third one I've also tried you know. I think I may have sniffed them all 🙊 I can't remember. This one sounds familiar though. Either way doesn't sound bad at all. And for 20beans it makes sense.
    The GGA one yes, that was pleasant too.
    I think something smelling "similar" is that power of suggestion sheep thing, if someone we hold as an authority says cabbage smells like unicorn Nectar something in our brain starts to smell that Nectar. Alot of the "reminds me of" section on fragrantica is hilarious at times and makes u wonder if the folks have even ever smelt any fragrances nevermind the two they say are similar. But it's all subjective.
    My favourite from Lalique is Encre Noire which I still cannot wear 😂 my mission one day to pull it off

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Год назад +2

      I agree, Fragrantica smells like makes me double take a lot... The perfumes are usually sharing one note with each other or are just completely different fragrances... I've seen some where I've wondered whether people had tried both too, you just wonder why they decided to list them as similar.
      I do think there is a very wavy and inexact line with what people say is or isn't a dupe and I am really not sure where that line is. I know videos with inexpensive dupes do well so I guess people exaggerate for views? I was immediately reminded of Meliora on smelling Amethyst, but when I compared them side by side, they are really quite different. So does that make them dupes or not? To me, no.
      I actually think Meliora is the nicest pdm that I've tried. I haven't liked the others and I certainly would not pay £200+ for one... 🤣
      I haven't smelt encre Noire but I know it's well regarded, isn't that the graveyard fragrance with all the vetiver? Vetiver can be tricky, it can smell quite different in different situations.

      The perfumer, Nathalie Lorson, also did Encre Noir for Lalique! (as well as Amethyst and Meliora). I really want to try Encre Noir, as I am a mortician/funeral director myself, and people describe it as a scent for that profession XD

    I had a mini-haul of Lalique fragrances recently. They were Amethyst, Le Parfum and Satine. And today I received Soleil. I confess I bought Soleil for the bottle alone; I didn't check the actual fragrance. Luckily, I enjoyed the scent; it was quite unusual in that it was composed of a variety of notes that aren't often combined in the same perfume. It worked for me but evidently it's had quite polarizing reviews. It makes me wonder what notes are setting off these extreme reactions in people's skin chemistry?
