buyer beware #102 how not to restore 1930's indian chief lower end restoration repair rebuild motor
this motor came in from another shop because they gave up on fixing it. they could not figure out how to rebuild something that takes common sense and brains to do.
i am doing everything that it takes to make a motor work but not replacing the bad parts. i am just cleaning up everything and clearing the parts so that they will work correctly for awhile. i do not expect this motor to last more then a few thousand miles but it will run very good for a few hundred miles. if you only want a show bike this is just fine. if you want a good rifer bike then this is not how to rebuild a motor. if you wanted to actually ride this bike you would have to replace all of the rust pitted and worn out parts. all the machine and assembly work shown in the video is what is required to get a motor to run correctly. it is up to you on how long you want the motor to last.
as a buyer you need to pay attention on how a motor runs and sounds, not just at how good it looks. it it sounds like a rock grinder, then you are probably getting a motor like this on the inside. a show bike motor, not a rider motor.
at tatro machine we want your motor run fast and last, not just look good.

Really enjoyed the video worked on a couple Indians over the years. Learned some stuff too thanks tatro
love these videos, you are a born machinist
Tatro Machine You are the BOSS of Harley Davidsons repairation!!!!
Glad You found that Bearing Tatro,,, My OCD was going off the charts,,, LOL.... Love watching the Master at work,,, can't Thank You enough,,,!!!!!
what's one bearing, they have so many.
tatro
I like that comment at the roller fitting if something is odd and not like it suppose to be just call it custom! GREAT!!!
Great attention to detail, a real treat to watch, Thank you
How much extra would it have cost to do it right with new bearings etc?
why stop there, replace all the bad parts and have a good motor. that is not the point of this video. if you watched the complete video you will see that i did replace the junk bearing with a better used one. not new by a long shot but just as good as the other parts that were used. no reason to mix soso parts with new parts. the junk stuff will turn the new parts to the same condition as them in a relatively short time.
tatro
the missing roller is right by the front of the folded towel. Oh good, you found it.
found it later in the video.

After rebuilding my own '46 lower end and trans, that looks like someone simply bought all the parts for an Indian engine from various sources, possibly the left crankcase was not the same manufacture as the right side !! and assembled it in their garage. Did it actually run?
i never finised it. the other shop picked it up.
tatro
First - again! I might be wrong, but I think Mr Tatro is not a fan of Indian perhaps.
not another one.
tatro
Nice pointer,lol
those edges that you ground down obviously indicate OEM rods therefore would it be safe to assume that that lower end has been pieced together....? the shims show the wear of a different set of rods?? they seem more worn than the rods....
just more rusted crap that needs to be fixed so that it will work. at least now they are going to get me some new parts.
tatro
Tatro Machine ... those slots on top indicate 50 to 53 rods, the female bottoms are always ugly like that,
uh... then why isnt harley dead? :P
Where is the hole for the rods to fit through when the cases are assembled ?? The bottom of the cylinder bore appears to be completely unfinished.
on old motors, the rods are very thin and they did not want any oil getting up to the pistons because the rings they used back then really sucked.
tatro
c'mon seriously , how is it that these cases were "used" if the cylinder skirt holes aren't there?. Maybe they were just lying around and corroding after someone threw the bushings in? I don't remember from the video if there were any wear marks on the parts or if it was all just corrosion. Love your videos Tatro ! I have learned so much about the old HD's. Thank you sir.
you will see how it looks after i get the lowerend rebuilt and assembled. things were different in the old days for reasons you don't know for. your have to study how things were and why before you can make decisions on how to do it now. the end use makes a big difference in that decision.
i have never worked on an indian chief motor before but a motor is a motor and they all need about the same things. pay attention to how things go together and most of the time you are good to-go.
tatro
Is it bad that I own a Harley repair shop and instead of me working im stuck watching you doing what i should be doing
for entertainment value you are in trouble. if you are studying and learning from them then good.
tatro
Trogdor The BurninaTor. Is he using KiWi Indian parts? All that grinding dont look kosher to me?
how about a broom handle with a magnet on it to hold the washer against the grinding wheel
that could work? i know my fingers work for me. it keeps my nails short too.
tatro
if it works, it works
*You need you sum grindin paste there Tatro.*
Any viewing angle is fine by me, just so long as its not Dan operating the camera.
ok, no more dan. what about tired fred letting the camera video the work bench?
tatro
I like Dan and I like his bike but Dan and a camera go together like Tatro and an Indian.
Fred is Fred..........it is what it is.
Fred Camera work is not that bad unless he had a slug to many of camera steadying fluid besides the running dialogue between you two is somewhere between the Odd Couple and Abbott and Costello routine. Allen get my top vote, Keith get high marks for his filmography on his engine rebuild as well. The only way I can watch Dan filming anything is to be on a three day bender and I don't do that anymore.
welcome to my world.
tatro
i spent more than a few dollars on my 42 scout getting everything metal sprayed
broke my heart
should have been good after all that work.
tatro
for a while it did but new parts make old parts wear out twice as fast
haha loved it glutton for puishment
not if they are set up correctly. parts either work together or not. that is what the mechanic's job is for.
tatro
THIS HAS TO BE A WIND UP , NEVER SEEN SUCH BUTCHERY
It ok to replace pitted race . NEW is good
not when you have no money. free job means no money for parts. make do with what you have or what you can get for free.
tatro
sorry but bottom end is important , If you don't have money know you wait. Don't let a customer control your workmanship . I'm sure you are a good machanic ,
I'm no machinist but wouldn't it have been better to mill off the sides of that rod?
Also why not just use a wrist pin when alining the rod?
why would you do that? indian designed the parts to fit together as they are. unless you are doing a redesign why change something that worked.
tatro
as stated in the video i did not get one with the job and i did not have one because i do not work on indians. harleys are no problem, lot's of parts for them.
now the job has changed so it will be getting rebuilt correctly.
tatro
Tatro Machine sorry I didn't here the part that you didn't get a wrist pin with the job.
Tatro Machine I just figured the closest to dead straight you could mil the rod the better? Like I said I'm no machinist just trying to learn a little from a pro..
Did you ever race against Mike Roland or Leo Hess?
no, before my time. i did help bob george some at the races if he needed anything. he use to run one of the easyrider streamliners back in the early 90's.
tatro
indian ?
marco samir Silva yep, right before the original iteration of Indian went under.
defiantly not good at all .
me or both.
