I think it is great you talking about the basics at the beginning of your videos, you cover all in very short time; fantastic for newcomers. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us!
I think it's good that you mention all the little details because new wet shavers could be watching and can get intimidated since they have no idea what's going on. Your channel is always being mentioned in the Facebook shaving groups because of the helpful tips you give and different products you shave with
Hey Nick! New to wet shaving here. Love this series and love all of your shave videos. As a new wet shaver I really appreciate you mentioning each part of your routine. Until i found your videos I too had a hard time understanding what was going on in other videos because I was unfamiliar with the process and much of the jargon. I picked up a sample pack of blades so far ive shaved with Shark Super Chromes and Astra SP blades. Obviously still working on my technique but I had the best shave of my life with an Astra SP and Razorock XXX the other day. I have a Merkur 34C arriving wednesday. and I just got an Omega boar hair brush in today. Most of my purchases have been from your recommendation, among other video makers. I really appreciate your videos, your time, your experience, and most of all your focus on helping the new wet shaver. Keep it up man!
One thing I find with your reviews is that you seem to love all products. I mean there has to be some products that are just ok. or sub par or even overrated.
Thanks for clarifying why you shave against the grain in the one quadrant of your neck. I figured as much but appreciate your comment none the less. Hopefully soon I will be placing my order for the Merkur 1904/1906 w/safety bar, Omega Boar Hair 10066 and trial pack of blades. I will also be purchasing the Kraken from Mickey Lee and Suavecito. Great stuff Nick, keep it up.
Good job, on the little details. I have coarse hair and sensitive skin, but learned from you to shave every day until your skin adjusts; worked perfectly. Thank you for the small details, they really help.
First, I have to say that I have been wet shaving for about 3 months now and I love all the vids and info. that I get from not only you, but Busta and Chris as well as others. I will say that I love how you taylor parts of your vids to the new wet saver, where others do not as much. Thank you for taking time from your day to educate others. I did not notice as much a different with the vid picture quality, but the sound was much sharper. With that being said, two thumbs up, great as always. Thank you Nick.
Loving this series! Besides learning a lot about the individual blade origins (which I really love), like others technique is so important. I am still too new and mastering things, but trying blades along with this series has been fun and I have already greatly reduced irritation with my 34C. Thanks and keep 'me coming. Oh yeah & I did break down and order two Sterling soaps!
Stirling soaps are a great value. I recently bought Stirling One end cuts and it comes with a tin. They packed it so full of soap I was only able to press some of the middle down to bloom it.
Good video Nick, echoes my thoughts that the SS just isn't quite as good as the SP. On another note, I think the people below moaning about a lack of replies are out of line. I've received more comments from yourself than nearly all other channels and always appreciate you making that effort. I'd never expect a reply to everything, especially taking into consideration the amount of hours your work takes and how little free time you must have. You do a great job, so keep it up.
The new camera is an improvement. I noticed it mainly in the sound. It's more crisp w/ less room ambiance. Perhaps the mic is more directional. Re: blades... I've heard a couple people call Voskhod "The Astra Killer". Not sure I totally agree with that, but I do use Voskhods daily. Also, I wanna see if what all these Pol-Silver guys are always saying hold true for you. I need to try them myself sometime to see if they can unseat Feather as my favorite sharp blade.
Love this series! I'm kinda hoping you find something your really dislike cause so far every product you've reviewed you either love, like a lot, or just like but not as much as X lol.
It's true! I've had no bad experiences yet. I had bad experiences with blades when I started wet shaving, but I think my technique has evolved a lot, so much so where I can avoid lots of irritation from most blades
+Tony Marinelli Hey Tony. Yep, get ready for the eye-rolling. I've gotten REALLY into the wet shaving thing and have purchased a bunch of stuff: razors, blades, soaps, brushes, balms, etc., etc., My wife already made a comment about how I've taken over the entire counter-top area in our bathroom. Oops! Oh well. I feel okay about it. I always tell her, "I know, but it's better than spending money on booze and cigarettes." Your mileage may vary on that one. : )
***** What's funny is, my wife smokes and probably spends $100 a month on cigarettes, but of course that's alright. She always say, "It's shaving, plain and simple why do you make such a big deal. You're spending more money on product now than before." She does have a point with regards to me buying a bunch of soaps and aftershaves. Cheers
Hey Nick, thanks again for another interesting video, i love the fact you keep mentioning the small detail about the whole shaving process, i will be making the transition to this for of shaving so i find it massively helpful, thanks buddy
New camera seems nice & crisp. Would like to see PolSilver blades... Super Iridium.... I recently tried them and was really impressed with them over my regular lab blues.
watching both your SS and SP vids, I might have to revisit SP blades. I tossed them out after 2 mediocre shaves, but it could have been my skill because I was into DE shaving for about 3 weeks that time. Nice reviews.
Hi Nick! Can you please review Polsilver Super Iridium blades? The general opinion is that they are good but they are more expensive than Feather blades (some people claim that they last for 5-6 good shaves while Feather is good for just 2 great shaves). Love your videos with the blades reviews! Great stuff!
nice vid Nick... glad you did this review this is Astra is actually the blades I use and theyre about to run out ... So wasn't sure if i should repurchase or try the Personna Blue Labs blades like you tend to use....
Nick, Have you tried the slicing the wine cork with a feather yet? Remember to just cut deep enough to cover the edge, about 4 to 5 times per side. You'll be surprised at how smooth the first shave is. Love watching your videos. Don The Navygoat
+Donald Navygoat23 By default you aren't notified when someone comments on your own videos. He probably checks the comments the day of uploading and maybe a few days later. In other words, you gotta get in their day one.
Nice video content as always. Camera quality is good for seemed a little more "yellowish" but not sure if you adjusted your lighting. Keep up the blade reviews because your insight is appreciated.
I've been playing around with a sample pack recently (I'm a new wet shaver) and the SS blades seem a lot better for me as well, glad to know I'm not doing everything totally wrong!
Great vid, once again! Can you try voskhod and compare them to Astra SP? So far these two are in the running for me. I think I have my mind made up on the two, but it is good to get other impressions as well. Seems your comparisons match up with what I encounter. I have one thing that differs though. Try as I might, I cannot get Sterling to work for me. It lathers up great, scents are top notch, and feels slick when applied. ... problem is that it feels sticky during the shave. I can't figure it out. Maybe the brushed stainless razor I use? I don't know. I'll have to get my old TTO I lent to my brother-in-law and see if that is the issue. Keep up the great content! God bless!
Hi Nick, The blade you used in this video come in a blue package and are made of stainless steel. I didn't like them that much either compared to the ones you used yesterday which are made of carbon steel and have a platinum coating. I like the new camera that you're using. The video seems alot clearer and the images in the video are sharper. You went with Hi-Def camera didn't you?
Just a quick question Nick: if you know that blades will be different for everyone, what do you hope to accomplish for your viewers in this series? Do you think (for example) that MOST will find something like the Astra SP to be sharper than the Personna Lab Blue, but the Personna to be smoother? Personally, I think that lots of people are going to buy blades based on what you think of them (for better, or worse). So, if you do think that most of these comparisons for sharpness/smoothness will be similar for most people, do you plan on doing a cumulative video at the end, to compare the performance of all the blades that you used? I think that would really help. Please don't take this comment as a negative one, I'm just really interested to know, because this question has been bugging me ever since you mentioned you would do a series based on the performance of razor blades. Again, another awesome video. :) Kenny
great job nick as always enjoying all your videos. would You please rewiev merkur blades ,it seems everybody hates them. I wonder what You think about them. Thank You. Chris
Have you ever used the Gillette Silver Blue razors? I use these, and they were the best in my combo pack of blades, but I just wonder how they work for someone else.
Hi, Nick how do your meam about Russian blades, such a voschod, rapira, astra ? I live in Russia? and love Voschod blades in my Merkur Progres. i can buy rapira and voschod about of ( 10 rubles) 13 cent of USA. But i while live in Russia, dont know when i can buy Astra? or gillette siver blue etc . from petersburg plant. I realy love Voschod blades. and think its good. How do you think?
Hey Nick, quick question on the video you made a few weeks back "Soap Commander Courage & IKON 102" video you stated that you "flipped it upside down" the blade...do you recommend on doing that with all blades. thanks -Patrick
some feedback about the new camera. it looks great but the sound is actually a downgrade from your previous videos. the problem is that we're hearing too much of the room because the gain on the audio is too high (ie too sensitive) so the sound is contaminated with ambient noise. its not something you can fix in post but more of a hardware issue. if there is an audio option on you camera to reduce the gain then it'll fix the problem.
Nick, have you tried any of the Parker razors, specifically the R99? The Micro Touch One isn't working for me no matter what I do, and I'm looking into that one.
So my doctor said wet shaving is better for me but I'm terriefied because the blades look intimidating how safe would the guys be right now I use typical gillete mach 3
Trust me, you're more likely to cut yourself with that piece of shit gillette mach 3 than a safety razor... I recommend a mild one, like Edwin Jagger DE89 or Muhle R89 or Merkur 34C...
I don't think Nick makes videos anymore. It has been quite a while. His last video was during the COVID lockdown and I know he got relocated to another hospital in a different state to care for COVID patients. That was the last we've heard of him.
He left us now we need to decide way forward..I did try Indian made astra SP n like it so much that I placed order for 200 of these as it takes 2 months to reach Canada from Sweden 😂
what's the benefit to using one of these single blade razors? how long do you use one blade for and how long does each side last? Is shaving like this better than using a multiblade and shaving foam?
HardAsSponge It reduces skin irritation and ingrown hairs, saves you money, etc. Results vary, but even with my thick hair, and with shaving my head and face, I get 3-4 shaves out of each razor blade. So buying a pack with 100 razor blades lasts me over a year. 😀
I appreciate how you reviewed the Astra SS immediately after the Astra SP, thereby noting the subtle differences better. Helpful review.
I think it is great you talking about the basics at the beginning of your videos, you cover all in very short time; fantastic for newcomers. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us!

I just placed my first order with Try-A-Blade! Got them for my son and I, who's now a wet-shave convert as well!

Why didn't Nick reply 😂

As a newbie researching my new hobby, THANK YOU for explaining things. We all had to start somewhere. Great videos
Astra SP were the first blades I used. YMMV in blades I have heard is HUGE. I now only use Lord Platinum and Feather.
Great new camera - the HD is more clear and the colour is better. Well done!
Stirling soaps are a great value. I recently bought Stirling One end cuts and it comes with a tin. They packed it so full of soap I was only able to press some of the middle down to bloom it.

All of my supplies are on their way to begin my journey into de wet shaving and I know this will drive my wife up a wall.

I appreciate you doing these videos. I am a 1 month noob so your vids are very helpful.
Does a platinum coated blade mean that it is sharper or that they last longer? What is the reason for these different coatings?
Hey Nick, thanks again for another interesting video, i love the fact you keep mentioning the small detail about the whole shaving process, i will be making the transition to this for of shaving so i find it massively helpful, thanks buddy
I like those better than the Astra green ..smoother shave 💈

Nice review! I'm using Astra SP and Voskhod blades and I find them pretty similar. Great blades! Your take on the Voskhod blades would be interesting.
Are you going to do a final video where you rank/order your favorite blades? Have the personna lab blues been dethroned?
I use the alum block for nicks, but also for a grip on the screwtop of my shave soap.
nice vid Nick... glad you did this review this is Astra is actually the blades I use and theyre about to run out ... So wasn't sure if i should repurchase or try the Personna Blue Labs blades like you tend to use....
Fantastic series. Lots of great information. How do these stack up with Derbys?
Great to see the videos coming regularly again! I'd love to see you try some of the Gillette 7 o'clock blades. The yellows are my absolute favourites.

All these names with Astra throw me off. Sometimes. LOL ! Good review sir
I would love a video with some vintage Gillette blades.
Also a review on supermax titanium blades!!! I'm just curious on your impressions of them.
Good vídeo Nick! You are such a good speaker! Greetings from Spain!
Love the blade reviews. Astra blades work really well for me.
Nick I have some DE razors that I manufacture and really am anxious for you to try. Where can I send them to??

Have you given up on Straight Razors?
That point when you realize that you have been shaving all wrong. Great video.
Video quality is way superior.
Ha.
Kia is Really Good Blades I will say....
Really good blade FOR ME! Derby & feathers dont agree with me.
The Astra SS blades do not work well for me - YMMV!
SS are much more sharper than SP!
Rod Sterling? no way lol
