Our Pop Up Camper’s FURNACE Broke! | Tips & Tricks for TROUBLESHOOTING Your Furnace 🔥

  • This video details how to troubleshoot and, hopefully, fix your pop up camper’s furnace if you’re having issues. Begin with the basics and ensure your furnace has both gas and 12 volt power. Then, proceed to the obvious, but not so obvious, checks. Check to ensure the thermostat is sending power to the furnace and check to ensure that the power switch located inside the furnace is turned on. Baring those, most pop up camper furnaces, and RV furnaces for that matter, are built rather similarly even if they look slightly different. Commonly, there are four components that you should check for the proper function that are most likely to break. These components include the high temperature limit switch, the sail switch, the time delay relay - if present - and the control board. In our case, the high temperature limit switch was working properly, the sail switch appeared to be working, and there isn’t a time delay relay. Therefore, the only component left was the control board or fan control board. We decided to replace our OEM control board with a U.S. made, Dinosaur Electronics Fan 50 plus pins board, which was essentially a drop-in component. Thankfully, the control board was the only issue, which allowed us to get our furnace up and running again!

    Nice job on troubleshooting the furnace. It is a good idea to have a backup source of heat when camping in the cold weather. We had a pop-up for 20 years and kept a Mr Heater Buddy with us when camping somewhere without electricity. If we stayed some with electricity, I swapped the Buddy out for a 1500 watt heater.

    good trouble shooting. for sure. when mine didn't work, it was the thermostat. you can test that by shorting the the two wires.

    Checking each system in our rig is number one priority each January. I removed the toilet/ shower system in the bathroom, also black water tank. Put new floor in that area, and placed stick down tile on new floor. We installed a Laveo system in there with the hold down kit. Battery operated system, utilizing a bag containment kit. We have been out with the new system 3 times now, worked like a charm. Installed another Grey water tank in place of removed black water tank, replumbed it for smaller hose for dumping when needed. We are camping more this year at smaller out of the place locations. Thanks for the tutorial, you give us confidence to repair our own rigs. Keep it up Brother looking forward to the next installment. Bless you, and yours. Bless our popup Family.

      Are you planning on doing any off-grid camping or boondocking? If not, I’d just pick up an inexpensive lead-acid battery for around $80. This will allow you to run a fridge while traveling, emergency brakes, electric tongue jacks, and/or an electric roof lift if you have then without spending too much money.

    This video showed up on my feed very coincidentally as my wife and I just returned from a winter camp trip here in Colorado. The temperature where we camped was high of 35 and low of 15. The furnace was working fine when we set up the pop-up and continued to work for 4-5 hours, then stopped. We were in a campground and we’re hooked to 30 Amp electricity. I did the best trouble shooting that I could and in the process, I unplugged the power and when I plugged it back in, the furnace kicked back on and ran for another 5-6 hours before it shut off again. This happened for the whole trip (fortunately we had an electric space heater for when it shut off in the middle of the night). We have an ‘04 Coleman and I looked up some trouble shooting when we got back. The only thing that I read that made any sense was that we were camped an 9600’ above sea level and that can cause it to shut down due to lack of oxygen. Any thoughts?

    Great Question, I hope. My igniter works on AC plug in, but when I try to use heater on battery, blower works, but the igniter doesn’t turn heat on (doesnt click). I think it doesn’t have the power necessary because of the battery.

    Hey my wife and I love your videos! Super informative and has helped us a lot. We recently took it out to a colder climate thinking the furnace was working. But when we turn the thermostat on and turn up the heat it blows our fuse in or converter box and had to replace it to get power back in our camper. It’s super cold tonight, but we have some space heaters to keep us warm in 14 degree nights. Any advice on we’re we should start? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  Год назад +1

      Could be a number of things, but the top three I’d start with are: 1. Overloaded circuit, 2. Short-circuit/damaged wiring, or 3. Improperly rated fuse.

    I was having an issue with the heater on my 07’ Coleman (Atwood heater). After trouble shooting it turned out my two stage regulator was bad. I still had gas flow to stove, fridge and outside grill but the pressure was off just enough to cause a failure when calling for heat. Just something for others to think about if having issues diagnosing.

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  2 года назад +1

      Great point Kyle - I have heard of that happening to others. When you turned on the stove, did you notice a decreased pressure in the burners compare to normal or did you notice a decrease in pressure in the stove when the furnace was trying to light?

    • @KRT045
      @KRT045 2 года назад +1

      @@ItsPoppin I only noticed a difference when I had all three stove burners and the grill on high at the same time. Which I usually would never do. But my thought is that the heater has a pretty high BTU and the pressure was off just enough to cause a problem.

    Furnaces can't keep up anyway. Even on shore power. Too much cold air comes in through the air exchange AND the lower/floor vents. A PURE WASTE.
    I speak from much experience. I live in my RV IN WISCONSIN.
    I covered all of that up and use indoor propane heaters.
    SO MUCH WARMER!!!

    I don't have a furnace, but I'm not getting gas to my stove, so I'm thinking the 2 stage regulator is bad. I have propane in the bottle.

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  2 года назад +1

      Try undoing the pigtail on the propane bottle, let it sit for a bit, reattach, and then slowly turn on the propane. Baring this, it could be the regulator.

    Great video, thank you. If I could make a recommendation, it is usually best to test continuity by isolating the device or removing it from the circuit. That way there is no chance of a false reading. If you do not remove the spade connectors from the high limit you may get a false continuity reading from the control board. Great videos. Love your channel! 👍😁

    If theres no air blowing, and essentially no activity whatsoever despite the thermostat being turned up, what might the issue be?

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  Год назад +2

      It means there’s no power going to the unit. Issues could include no power to the camper, a blown fuse, a bad thermostat, or the reset/off switch set to off, possibly amongst others.
