When you put it this way...you do make a point . My first I've ever noticing this thing with Lex luthor, why did they change his skin color darker in the cartoon series ? it didn't bother me that much until you think about it...he is a villain and you made his skin color darker (maybe I'm reading way to much into it) .

I do think it does drastically change a character's development and I'm just not fond of distorting original character designs overall

I have often questioned why blackwashing is okay but whitewashing isnt. I'm under the mindset "If the character is this, I will color them this way." It is a major double standard to see people justify one but haze the other. I'm honestly glad I'm not the only one bothered by this.

There are many problems that I have with it:
One, I don't think it is okay to change a character's look so drastically, and I don't mean only their skin color but also their overall body figure, especially when it is an already well-established character.
Two, this is usually done in the name of "representation" and not to "fix" or enhance a character's attributes, by that, I mean it is usually not an artistically driven decision.
Three, usually, when characters are made to appeal to a minority (which is quite a "modern" thing), these come off as pretty shallow, superficial and lacking in depth and personality.
To be continued in the replies.

Four, I don't mind characters that are black, lgbtq or female. We've had plenty of them before, black characters like Static Shock, Gerald (from Hey Arnold!), Karl (from The Simpsons), Cyborg (from Teen Titans), Green Latern (from Justic League), among others. Female characters like Lara Croft, Samus Aaran, Krystal, April O'Neil (from TMNT), Helga or Phoebe (also from Hey Arnold!), Wonder Woman, the Powerpuff Girls, among hundreds of others. LGBTQ characters like Mr. Smithers (from The Simpsons), Mr. Simmons (from Hey Arnold), Mr. Harrison (from South Park), Zarbon (from DBZ), Pisces (Saint Seiya), among others.
The difference?? These DO actually have depth, and their personalities do not revolve around their sex, gender, race or sexual orientation.
Fifth, personally, I never understood this "representation" thing from modern media. It feels very narcissistic to me. Like, if I am watching a Tv Show or playing a video game, I don't give a flying damn about a character's skin color, sexual orientation, gender or sex. I play games or watch cartoons for ENTERTAINMENT's sake, not cause *I* (emphasis on the ME factor) want to be "represented". Link is an elf, Sonic, Crash, Fox and Spyro are furries, kirby is a rounded-looking alien, Mega Man is an android, Mario is an italian fat plumber, Rayman is a limbless freak, and Pac-Man, I don't even know what the f it is. I am not represented by any of this and I don't need to and they don't have to.
Sixth, if those in the entertainment want lgbtq, poc or female characters, 1 - DO not change an already established character, 2 - create your own instead, and 3 - just make these attributes secondary, they are not important, if you want a good character, give them development that goes beyond superficial things like someone's color skin, sex or sexual orientation. Humans are more complex than that, y'know.

I thank you for this beautifully thought out response and I did read both replies, and honestly I couldn't agree more

Also, I should clarify that gender bending or race swapping aren't wrong, AS LONG AS it is for artistic reasons and not for an agenda. An example I could give is 2B (from Nier Automata) has fan art in which she is depicted black. Nonetheless, it is not just a skin change, her hair and overall outfit got changed in order to fit her colors better (which is clearly an artistic decision).

@@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind I can agree with the artistic decision process I'm just not a big fan of characters being changed that dramatically
