How to measure a Euro cylinder

  • Euro cylinder locks are now very common but there are hundreds of different lengths available. The cylinders normally go up in 5mm increments. This video shows two ways of measuring a euro cylinder, one with the cylinder in the door and the other with the cylinder removed from the door. It’s important to get the correct size cylinder and very important to install the new cylinder the correct way around, especially if it is anti-snap.

    7 years ago and still relevant. I've come back to this a couple of times! Saves alot of money.. Thanks. Can i add by saying , make sure to take the handle fitting into account when measuring. Mine were removed before measuring for instance, grrr. Qnd perhaps thats why we see some a bit short..thanks again.

    Just a note - I've found in some places they quote the lengths from the lever (the bit that spins in the middle) and not the screw hole centre, so you will need to watch out for this. This is 10mm wide, so you would knock off 5mm from each measurement, or tell the salesperson you've measured from the screw hole if you're ordering over the counter.

    The question is:
    In what particular situation do you want to replace a shorter cylinder?
    Usually you want to replace the original cylinder which fits perfectly.

    Great video, funny enough my back door euro cylinder has became stiff and the keys sometimes getting jammed and won't turn, have to fiddle and jiggle the key about (which isn't good) do you have a video on how to change euro cylinders?

      Worth noting we have 5 of us with keys each and we lock/unlock the door up to 20 times a day!

      Yes, one of them I made several years ago in one of my rental properties so there is no sound as the next door neighbours were being noisy-

    I’m trying to change my euro cylinder lock, but it’s not working. I’ve removed the locking screw and attempted to pull lock with key around 10 degrees but it will not budge. It feels like it’s being held in place by some other source?

    Do you know what's the minimum lenght of an anti snap external cylinder? The original cylinder that's in my door is 40(internal)x30(external), but there's still a couple of more milimitars of space left between the end of the ext cylinder and the defender. I'm wondering if I could fit in an anti snap cylinder at all.

    I’m looking on B&Q and they state their measurements as L and W. Would I have to measure it differently?

    I saw some, I think they were Yale in Homebase with measurements quoted as 30/10/35 for example, which seemed confusing, I guess they are actually 35/40 (using my example)

      Yes that is confusing. I have never seen one with the middle figure before!
      Thanks for the commen t

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 8 лет назад

      +jonnno100 That middle figure is for the lever in the middle - as I mentioned in another comment some places measure from the edge of that lever, the width of which is 10mm. So you do need to take into account for this.

    two more questions if i may! 1. what happens if you were to fit the lock backwards, eg, ext to inside? 2. a house near me had an atttempted break in, they snapped off the external door handle (euro pvc lock door) , how likely would they have got in via that method?

    • @ultimatehandyman

      +jusb1066
      No problem ;-)
      1. If you install some (not all) locks the wrong way around then the anti-snap feature can be on the inside of the property- not the outside. This would mean that a snap resistant lock could be snapped. An example of a Euro cylinder that needs to be installed the correct way is the ABS from Avocet- ruclips.net/video/6wEZktQ9hb4/видео.html
      2. It's a common way of entry into properties with insecure Euro cylinders. A thief will use a pair of mole grips to rip the lock handle off, then snap the euro cylinder using the mole grips, you can then use a Allen key to turn the cam and unlock the door, similar to what I did in this video-

    it's a sad part to modern life that we have to protect our homes with high security locking systems. i come from the generation where your door was always open. we were all poor but you hardly ever heard of a burgulary or theft. ok, the kids may nick a couple of sweeties from the local shop. but that was it.

      I was a Special for 10 years and went to dozens of burglaries in that time. No matter how secure, or otherwise, the locks were, in not one instance was the lock "picked" or forced to gain entry. In every case, windows were broken, door panels were kicked in or some other method of entry was used.

    about the measurements, taking screwfix for an example, a lock might be sold as Length 45/50mm (95mm) which is which measurement?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 лет назад +1

      +jusb1066
      Good question. Normally the first figure is the external measurement, so a 45/50 would be 45 external and 50 internal. It's always best to check the product description though- just in case someone does it differently. I just checked Screwfix and they use the external measurement first (on the few that I checked). Thanks for the comment ;-)
