      DX changes the lighting engine(for the worse in most people's opinions), replaces playable character(and *only* the playable characters) models with higher polygon ones(which just look out of place next to all the low-poly environments IMHO). and the adventure fields' background music cuts out when ever you pass a load screen(the Dreamcast version continued to play between load areas)
      EDIT: also on the matter of lip-synch, Sonic adventure 2's lip-flaps are matched up with the Japanese dialog(in fact the dialog is so tightly matched that the English dub often has issues were lines are to long/short compared to the Japanese and end up overlapping each other, or differences in sentence structure end up making characters react to information before it gets said)

    These are the following additions/changes to the Director's Cut.
    -The Game Gear games can by unlocked by collecting Embems.
    -If you collect all the Emblems, you can unlock Metal Sonic to play as.
    -The visuals were overhauled. Most would agree the Director's Cut looks worse than the original.
    -There's now a Mission Mode.
    Sonic Adventure DX also seems to be more prone to glitches, but I can't confirm that. Overall, Sonic Adventure DX is hit or miss sorta port. I personally prefer it on the Dreamcast.

    • @CodeStew
      @CodeStew 7 лет назад +6

      Best example of glitches/oddities was with the Whale Chase Scene in the video. Near the end of the first Whale Chase, Sonic will begin top slow down which is what killed Dan the first time. The Dreamcast Version doesn't do that.

    I could be remembering this wrong, but I think the "lip syncing" is actually for the Japanese VAs, the English is just a VO with no changes to the talking animation. Looks slightly less ridiculous with the Japanese.
    Then again, I haven't messed around with the language option in this game in 10-12 years or so.

    Great vid, but your constant apologies for being negative are honestly holding you back! Like, instead of just saying "I'm sorry, it's early 3D, they had a lot to figure out," talk about what's ACTUALLY so bad about the animation - the walk cycles sliding over the ground, Sonic's legs going through his body, etc - this is all stuff still relevant to new animators today!

      As a sonic fan myself I'd rather he keeps softening the blows. Don't get me wrong I still want him to do as much contructive criticism as possible (like the leg clipping part which I had forgoten was a thing until this video) but I've long reached a point in my life where I can't take people just bashing that series anymore. I've known forever that Sonic sucks, probably since this game and maybe even earlier, but the franchise still does a few things well and high speed platforming remains a rare commodity to this day so it's pleasant when someone bring those up or at least seems to remember it.

    Dan, welcome to the era of the questionably good sonic games! This, battle and heroes are commonly thought as the start of the decline, while not a complete wreck, there is a slow descent into the valley that is the sonic franchise. (Side note: I know you said you aren't doing spinoffs, but would you consider spin ball as a special? It's not a traditional sonic game, but I think it would just be an overall fun experience to record)

    • @Stephen-Fox
      @Stephen-Fox 7 лет назад +2

      I dunno - For me Adventure 2 is an improved iteration on Adventure, which makes me think if they hadn't have begun their first flailing to latch onto a formula following it with Heroes, Shadow, and the irredeamable mire that was 06, until finding one in Unleashed (Well, half of Unleashed, anyway) they'd have had a good for the time 3d platformer with a hypothetical Adventure 3.
      The main problem I have with Adventure (and to a lesser extent Adventure 2) is that it's got the problems of the Gen 5 console 3d platformers in the Gen 6 console market. (While I wouldn't have minded Heroes if it wasn't for it being the start of this flailing around looking for a formula rather than giving the perfectly serviceable one they already had the polish it needed. It's fine as a side-game in isolation, it's what Heroes is in retrospect that bothers me.) - As such, I'd point to Heroes as the start of the decline, while this is Sega generally and Sonic Team specifically going through a "How do we 3d platform?" phase a generation later than their peers.

    Dan, if you have time, look at the Chao Garden in this game--animations, gameplay, etc.
    The Chao Garden absolutely made this game. The storyline gameplay wasn't that great, but breeding and customizing those adorable little aliens made DX one of my all-time favorites as a kid. Without the internet to just look up what combinations were possible, it became a fun game trying to collect all of the possibilities and max out their stats. After beating the main storyline with all the characters, I only ran select levels for the purpose of obtaining more of the animals for the Chao.

  • @aqualeung
    @aqualeung 7 лет назад +1

    So do you think some of Sonic's awkwardness is because hes all head, hands and feet? If they reduced the size of his hands maybe that solves some problems. You kinda need a big head for direction in 3D space but because of how often the feet are in motion you're drawn to them (maybe the color difference helps too). I dunno, proportionally he's a mess. Each foot and hand are bigger than his torso.

  • @Kunori
    @Kunori 7 лет назад +1

    The thing to know about Sonic Adventure was that it was basically stitched together out of dreamcast tech demos. That's why it has such a weird mix of different mechanics, they had a bunch of prototypes for things like racing games, schmups, skating, fishing, and just jammed them all together and did a bare bit of reskinning and strung a story between them. The dedicated "sonic" portion of the game was bigger than the others but not that big. The whole thing was kinda low-effort.

    • @Stephen-Fox
      @Stephen-Fox 7 лет назад +5

      Isometric platforming is... Certainly a thing that happened.
      No, seriously, I don't even mean that as a criticism of 3D Blast - Looking at any isometric platformer from a modern perspective is weird, it was how you did 3d platforming prior to the PS1, but it never plays or looks anything like a modern 3d platformer, not even in terms of the groundwork that was laid for future 3d platformers with things like Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot, (Which are both 3d platformers on 5th generation machines while this was a 3d platformer on a 6th generation machine which is why I can't accept 'early 3d platforming was stilted' as an excuse for this game's flaws - Most of the flaws it shows were mostly worked out over the course of the 5th generation of consoles, while this was released at the start of the 6th generation) but instead their own weird entity that didn't go anywhere because newer technology made that approach redundant. Honestly, due to how weird in a modern gaming context isometric platformers are I'd like to see a Guest Play on them rather than Dan talking about them, because they're weird in a modern context from an animation standpoint, they're weird in a modern context from a game design stand point
      As a Guest Play, I'd ideally want an overview of many of them rather than just looking at one specific one - Sonic 3d Blast: Flicky's Island is a notably late example, maybe Head Over Heels, maybe the Ocean Software's 1986 Batman title, but I think Congo Bongo and/or Ant Attack would need to be included for being the first of this style of platformer, as would Knight Lore for essentially establishing the conventions of them...

    The DX version of Sonic Adventure is a port with some minor graphical upgrades (most assets remained unchanged, but some of the playable character models were made smoother and less obviously polygonal, and some textures were updated), as well as some added extras (Mission mode, unlockable Game Gear games, an unlockable Metal Sonic skin for the time trial mode, and [in the GameCube version] connectivity with the Game Boy Advance for Chao-raising purposes). It's also glitchier than the Dreamcast version and is thus the preferred version for speedruns.
    Also, the voice actor for Dr. Robotnik/Eggman in this game is Deem Bristow. He was the character's voice actor until his death in 2005, although archive footage was reused in a couple of later games. He was soon replaced by Mike Pollock, who voiced the character in 4Kids' English dub of the Sonic X anime, and who has stayed on as Eggman's voice actor even after SEGA replaced the rest of the 4Kids VAs.

    This isn't an animation examination of Sonic Adventure. This is an animation examination of a majorly downgraded animation- wise port with "DX" slapped at the end. The original Dreamcast version has way better lighting and more "colorful" textures. The models of certain characters, (including Sonic) are way different. If you want to play something that has the original lighting and textures try the "Better" Sonic Adventure DX mod. (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=299808681)
    This mod contains bug fixes, full screen, and a mod loader with the Dreamcast palette lighting and Dreamcast textures installed automatically. The modding community is working on porting the Dreamcast models. This won't change how the game plays, but it will bring the game back to more of it's former glory.
    If you want to see the differences and a bit of history, you can check out this video by a dude named BlazeHedgehog. (ruclips.net/video/8uNsTXIzgGI/видео.html)
    However, the guide part of the video is obsolete, with the mods being with the new mod loader if you so choose.

    I grew up on this game so I'm captivated by the nostalgia. And I loved how this game was open world for the most part and that you could switch between characters, which showed the same story all in their own perspectives. This was one of my favorite sonic games haha. But I do get what you mean by all the animation flaws. At the time, something like the fact that their lips didn't match their words and all the cheese the game has to offer was sort of expected to me at the time when I was playing. So as a kid I loved the game despite those flaws. But yes, I can see why it can be very cringy haha. If I didn't grow up with the game, I probably wouldn't be into it as much as I am and have been lol. Sonic Adventure 2 is definitely better though.

    Oh boy. I was *really* taken by this game when I first saw it as a kid-I only got the DX release on GCN, so this was after I was very much exposed to 3D games on the N64-but looking back on it 20 years later, holy *hell* this is rough.
    I think one of the things that really captured my attention as a kid was Chaos's movement and melting into a puddle, as well as the concept of Chaos as a villain. I definitely remember remarking on the fact that Sonic's run animation was a little... slippery, though. I guess all the floors in this game are freshly waxed. Yes, even the asphalt and concrete.
    (Hi, 2017 Dan! I'm just here watching old videos because I needed more Dan and Dan/Carrie shenanigans, so I went scrolling. =V )

  • @Phos9

    I think for your purposes, the most important difference is that the character models and shading were changed. Sonic, for example, did not have individual fingers on the dreamcast version.
    Oh, and the facial animations in this game are so weird because they only had a few facial expressions that they'ed swap between. That wasn't that uncommon a tool in those days, but they seem to have been limited by how many they could use or something, because many of them are reused from mid level circumstances.
    Oh, and I've heard from people who modify SADX that the game barely fucking runs.

      QueenFiria No. He was shown one of the many bugs from this TERRIBLE port. On the Dreamcast version, you just speed right through there. I've done it a thousand times. It controls exactly like you would expect it to. The DX port screwed up the collision or something, so that you can pass over the speed boost thing and go through the railing.

    Dan, Jim Cummings did voice Dr Eggman in one of the cartoons, but in SA1 and SA2, he was voiced by the late Deem Bristow.

    Dan, if you can get ahold of it, I would recommend playing Sonic Jam's Sonic World briefly for comparison to this. That section of the game was based on a Saturn beta they had of this game at the time, and oddly the animation of Sonic is generally much better, and because it all takes place in a Green Hill Zone kind of place, the art direction is very uniform.

    Wow... I never saw the slow route before. I'm one of the people who prefer this game to the later installments: it was my jumping point into the series. I do like the older titles too, but the actual "game" part of sonic adventure 1 was still just as good. The first level was one of the highlights but so was the mountain stage and the city stage. The final level had an appropriate build up with the music.
    Other stages... remind me of marble hill zone from the first sonic game.

    Examining the character animations of a 3D Sonic game is an interesting choice; I'd say that the designers put more thought and attention towards level design, considering how many sweeping camera angles and zoomed-out shots there are. Still, I look forward to Dan's examination of the game, and sincerely hope that he sticks around long enough to analyse fish motion.
