My dad use to sing this to me all the time because this was one of our favorite movies when I was around age 4. He passed away 4 years ago May 1st and I am 28 years old now. I just finished learning this song on guitar so I can play it to my kids (if I ever have any.) Music is the key to the soul, thank you for the share.
That is because these 3 legends are just awesome entertainers who can sing, act & dance at A+ proportions and they are great comedians who were at the top of their game in the 80s.
Steve Martin getting jealous of Short’s singing is the perfect touch. What geniuses these guys are. The comedic nuances of these three can’t be taught. Such pros. Chase and Martin especially are absolutely unbelievable off the charts at this.
This is always my favourite part of the movie. I'm mean, sure, this movie is funny, even parts of this scene. But what sticks me is that this whole song is about two guys noticing their friend is worried and doing what they can to make him rest easier. They come together in friendship, and that's what makes it beautiful.
Growing up as a kid this was always a comedy song that I could laugh my head off too cause of all the animals and funny gestures. 20 years later it just has such a different feeling to it, kinda brings you to peacefulness
On the SNL 40th anniversary show, Steve Martin joked that this movie was Lorne Michaels' "masterpiece"--personally, I think he was right. And Randy Newman's genius was front and center.
an emotional song, kudos to the writers, the rendering, Short blows away the singers (he attempted a singing career in earlier days - a Sinatra follower). Everything about that moment is perfect. I'm a pro musician for some 50 years. met Short also J. candy at a gathering in the late 70s after a Noel Coward play in Toronto.
Randy Newman wrote the song and it's a lovely homage to the Roy Rogers song "Blue Shadows on the Trail". What a sweet, charming moment in this hilarious film. Thanks for posting!
Arizona moon keep shining From the desert sky above You know pretty soon That big yellow moon Will light the way back to the one you love. Blue shadows on the trail Little cowboy, close your eyes and dream All of the doggies are in the corral All of your work is done Just close your eyes and dream little pal Dream of someone Boom boom boom boom, [etc.] Blue shadows on the trail Soft wind blowing through the trees above All the other little cowboys Back in the bunkhouse now, so Close your eyes and dream
Miss my friend who passed away. We use to sing this song to my little brother. Cause he fell asleep 1st. After drinking but he would smile as crashed out. This was our favorite movie. Then tell him goodnight Ned. We all went sleep afterwards too.
Either my dad or grandpa (or both) used to sing this to me when i was really young. I just stumbled upon this at 19 years old, and it unlocked so many fuzzy memories from childhood. Its so cool how a song or movie can really transport you.
my 2 year old demands blue shadows as we do a horsey ride to bed every night this vid has got plenty of use here so thanks for the share it has helped in a plethora of situations hehe
This will always be in my top ten of favorite 80s movies wiith Ghostbusters, The Goonies, The Explorers, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, The Karate Kid, They Live, Lethal Weapon & Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures.
I Love that so many people love this movie And sing this to their children or people that they Love to help them go to sleep. Or just watch this for fun.
Been learning guitar for a year. Really into metal. Solos, ect. But I was recently back in my home town growing up, and we always watched this, and we had a guitar we never played and left. So I quickly learned this song. Easily one of my favorites to play on it.
Hadn’t watched this movie since I was a kid and randomly thought of it and wanted to watch it with my parents this weekend. We did and it was just as great as I had remembered it. This scene stuck out to me for some reason and each night since I’ve watched this video before going to sleep. Like a lot of these comments have mentioned I think I’d like to play this for my kids before bed as well
dear parker west - a nice memory . my daughter and I have memories of renting from a blockbuster store in Hawaii... just rediscovered and love this song... :) happy trails lil cowboy
I haven’t heard of this song since I was like 10. I’m 22 now. I started tearing up when i heard it again for the first time in 12 years or so. I remember watching this movie with my mom and dad all the time as kid. Wish I could go back to those innocent precious times ❤️
My family felt nostalgic so we pulled this movie out to celebrate a birthday a couple of days ago. This is such a good fun movie and this scene remains my favorite scene in the whole movie. These three are such super talented comedic geniuses. ❤️
OKAY 🤯 , firstly, I would like to remark upon the amazing skills of Steve Martin, as it pertains to playing musical instruments, arranging songs, writing songs, and singing songs, additionally also producing his own music. He is indescribably proficient on banjo, arguably one of the more difficult instruments to attempt to master. I also have so much love for Martin Short and Chevy Chase. I was a kid in the '80s and my parents thought this movie was so funny because they have a really bizarre sense of humor. So I would rewatch this film over and over and over and what struck me the most was the music. Also, when I became older I saw the jerk starring Steve Martin and of course everyone knows that classic song You belong to me. However, I admonished everyone who has not heard Bernadette Peters the Great and Steve Martin sing together. It's absolute magic just like the scene in this movie. God bless you all and always remember how much God loves us ♥️🙏🏼🤙🌠🌄🖖🏻👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽✌️🎶🎵🎶😘😂😜🤩🌚😍💯
Wish they had a reunion and would sing this song one last time. When I was a kid we were kinda poor but we had this movie on VHS so I would watch it on a cheap little TV we got from the goodwill. I would watch it everyday because it made me forget about our financial issues. I will always cherish this song, even if it’s a comedy I can’t help but get a little emotional hearing it.
This is a 6 years later thanks for the upload. I don't know what notes the amigos sing on last word "dream", but it's so perfect it makes my heart flutter. Thanks Randy Newman!
This scene somehow manages to capture my 90s childhood. Good memories renting this movie on VHS and watching it with the fam. Love this song, love Martin Short's singing, and as others have pointed out, the great subtle comedy of the others' jealousy of Ned's voice.
You will! if you like this just sit out there until wee hours and you will have Blue Shadows and 4 Kids!!! Luv your Pa!!! = 0)
Nice Job. I'm sure he's proud
Very sad to hear that. Your father passed too young. But, I'm sure he's proud of you. And, I'm sure he loves hearing you play.
Am so sorry I hope things are working out for you
I also want to sing this to my kids and I am very young still
While comical, it is still a legitimately good song, beautifully sung.
dancepiglover Randy Newman wrote it, along with all the songs in the movie!
That is because these 3 legends are just awesome entertainers who can sing, act & dance at A+ proportions and they are great comedians who were at the top of their game in the 80s.
Randy Newman was a genius! I love this song!
Caught myself singing it at work
I have this song as a ring tone....
The horses doing the background voices.
Pure genuis.
MAN I wish comedies today were done with such quality.
And you're literally garbage.
Martin Short can sing his behind off
I literally lose it every time those horses start bombombombom
What About the owl
written by Randy Newman
For some reason, everytime I'm depressed, I think of this song to cheer up. Thank you Steve, Martin and Chevy for making my days shine!
MegaUberStar good night mega 🐢
Why make a day shine in flame, when you could make it stormy, and bend thunder and lightning to your will?
For a second I thought you only said Steve Martin and Chevy Chase for obvious reasons...
This gives me good vibes and makes my nerves go away.
Same! This song has healing powers! :)
Steve Martin getting jealous of Short’s singing is the perfect touch. What geniuses these guys are. The comedic nuances of these three can’t be taught. Such pros. Chase and Martin especially are absolutely unbelievable off the charts at this.
in the last sentence what Martin were you talking about
I think its more he is getting emotional and he is trying to act all tough, keeping a serious face. They are the ultimate posers after all.
is that short's voice actually?
@@TechFabLab a while back when I watched the credits it listed Chase, Martin , and Short as the performers.
Chevy Chase sounds EXACTLY like Paul Simon! LOL
I got a kick out of the way the tortoise says, "Good night, Ned," at the end. This is probably the most charming scene in the film.
Uh.. what stuff are you into, pal..?
a special little masterpiece ...
@@uwu-wu9ow : Same stuff that the scriptwriter had, putting a tortise in a Mexican desert.
I used to laugh so hard as a kid every time the turtle said “goodnight, Ned” 🤣
Martin’s singing is so beautiful ❤️❤️
This is always my favourite part of the movie.
I'm mean, sure, this movie is funny, even parts of this scene. But what sticks me is that this whole song is about two guys noticing their friend is worried and doing what they can to make him rest easier. They come together in friendship, and that's what makes it beautiful.
My feeling too..
This movie is *criminally underrated*
what I love most besides this song is the hand-painted sky behind them, just so dreamy and beautiful
Arizona really looks like this and better
One of my favourite films and always will be
Yeah I feel with you
mine also.
It used to be mine too, until I've learned of trick photography. I was crushed!
@@BlackPixel1 only people who like the movie will get that reference haha
This is amazing - normally horses don’t like to back up!
Yah normally they’re hoofers.
Lol, good one
That pun took me a second, I had to scroll back down and give it a thumbs up when it clicked
What about the Owl dancing
If this song weren't so utterly emotional for me, I would be cracking up at these guys. I love them all the way around.
Somehow, this song is the perfect way to say a tearful goodbye to my beloved 1980s. May you rest in peace. I miss you every day.
Growing up as a kid this was always a comedy song that I could laugh my head off too cause of all the animals and funny gestures. 20 years later it just has such a different feeling to it, kinda brings you to peacefulness
"Look at the little fella. He's tuckered out already."
I just watched this movie for this first time, and the horses caught me so off guard, the turtle too. 😂
I can’t explain how much I love how they’re all full grown men, yet they randomly treat Ned like he’s this sensitive little kid. Comedy gold.
I agree so much... so the way the world should... :)
Lol
I sing my son to sleep to this every night.
Very Kool 💗🎶🎵🎶
i want to be your son
Same here
I remember the incredible revelation that Martin Short could sing that well - utterly amazing!
On the SNL 40th anniversary show, Steve Martin joked that this movie was Lorne Michaels' "masterpiece"--personally, I think he was right. And Randy Newman's genius was front and center.
Randy did the voice for the singing bush, which I absolutely love!
I just realized after all these years that the turtle is definitely Chevy Chase.
That's a tortoise.
I was today years old when I realized that. Lol
@@noswonky All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises.
When the movie was made with not so much dollars or graphic effects but only with real actors!!
Don't want to spoil the illusion but those weren't real singing horses and a talking tortoise :)

I'm a pro musician for some 50 years. met Short also J. candy at a gathering in the late 70s after a Noel Coward play in Toronto.
i love how they guys look at each other when ned starts singing like "uhh this is our song but ehh.. not bad kid""
Steve Martin's reaction when he realizes he's being upstaged by Martin Short's singing. XD
Nailed it.
I always imagined Steve Martin’s look as ‘did you know he could sing like that?’ And Chevy Chase’s ‘how about that? Just go with it.’
@@Jgm-gm9wi Same!
I thought it was more of a 'wow, didn't know the kid could sing so well'.
Lol, the turtle.. "Good night...Ned."
I know you posted this 3 years ago, but that's a tortoise
lol I love the internet
ARedCow, tortoises are a subset of turtles, just as squares are a subset of rectangles. So Sean’s comment is still correct, if not precisely accurate.
I wonder if the tortoise is still alive today.
Randy Newman wrote the song and it's a lovely homage to the Roy Rogers song "Blue Shadows on the Trail". What a sweet, charming moment in this hilarious film. Thanks for posting!
This is such a personal movie to me. I don't talk much about this movie. I come to 'listen' this video in total isolation.
Arizona moon keep shining
From the desert sky above
You know pretty soon
That big yellow moon
Will light the way back to the one you love.
Blue shadows on the trail
Little cowboy, close your eyes and dream
All of the doggies are in the corral

Dream of someone
Boom boom boom boom, [etc.]
Blue shadows on the trail
Soft wind blowing through the trees above
All the other little cowboys
Back in the bunkhouse now, so
Close your eyes and dream
Thanks! 🕉️🙏
there will never be another movie like this...Martin Short Steve Martin, Chevy Chase...genius!

Love this scene so much. It showcases the talent of these actors. Singing voice, the comedy. Underrated scene
Oh I loved this movie as a kid
Same. Big part of my childhood.
my sister and I used dance to my little butter cup 😂

I Love that so many people love this movie
And sing this to their children or people that they Love to help them go to sleep.
Or just watch this for fun.
There's nothing like a Mexican sunset! So gorgeous!
It's a painting backdrop.
Mexican sunsets actually look like that :)
Greatest movie of all time!
This scene really took me by surprise. I did not expect a charming and touching song in this movie
The way Steve looked at Martin short like this dude can really sing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This video was playing and a red cardinal showed up on my dad’s porch, exactly when the animals appeared. Wow!

How could anyone thumbs down this? These 3 together were so great.
The great Randy Newman. Put respect in his name.
I had no idea he had so many good songs, I only knew the theme from monk and the toy story song lol.
A true classic!!! No doubt about that!
