  • We got our hands on Modmo's latest Saigon+ and put it to the test. We didn't manage to get access to their accessory mounts, but decided to do a donut run with it regardless.
    We spent the day on the bike and talk about the features and experience using it.

      Many young families have both parents working to make ends meet. With a second commuting car.
      As in my case, 3 years of hilly 25 mile a day mixed urban/country ebike commute after scrapping my old diesel. Rain, ice, snow, shine, no other option, no problem. Motor= no sweat= easy to layer up. Used simple cheap hi vis waterproofs from local market, over top of work uniform. Added thermals leggings and motorbike gloves for sub zero. Quick to take off. Didnt get wet or cold. Mates used to joke it was a Hi vis space suit :)
      Big Ortlieb pannier bags carried big loads. Home delivery / van day hire sorts out rare bulky stuff.
      Motorway traffic was a miserable daily existance.
      Whereas ebiking through nature was soma for a weary soul.
      Highly recommend others give it a go, but its not for everyone.

      As the statistic quoted in this video said, the average car journey has just 1.2 occupants. So on average it's just the driver alone for 4 out of 5 journeys.
      If you need to bring a flat packed wardrobe home there are plenty of bike trailers that can do that for you. I have two bike trailers myself. One suitable for the flat pack or a full sized lawnmower and much more. I've had 70kg of shopping with no problem. Pulled by a pedal power only bicycle.
      Although, with all the money you've saved from NOT needing a car or a second car for your every day transport, you could hire a van or a car for a few hours. Or even better, just get it delivered. Easy peasy.
      As for the bad weather, a good bike poncho will keep you covered literally and metaphorically.
      Instead of problems, there is nearly always a simple solution or a compromise.

    I really need to get an EBike. I'm just about to start my new job and I have muscle atrophy, been out of work for ages and I live on a huge hill. I'm worried that if I go to work by walking, I'll be unable to get back to work the following day, I'm hoping to use an EBike once I get my first pay check and slowly exercise my muscles back up at the same time.

      An eBike is perfect for this. If you are really strugging with your present fitness you can increase the assist so you're not straining your muscles so much providing you're travelling less than 15.5mph - which you probably will be espeecially cycling up a hill. What _will_ happen though is that your fitness level will increase and you will lower the assist level so definitely go for it.

Adds on are brilliant but not first (see e.g. Wallerang e-bikes since 2015 and Yuba bikes). Belts are usually carbon reinforced and brilliant for rainy climates!

      Even though I agree for most cases, applying this to absolutely everyone is just wrong. It is true for the common person leaving not too far from a city /services and that has no job that requires the transportation of anything that could not fit a bike.
      Now if you take the person that lives far in the countryside and / or has a job as a self-employed in arts and crafts (as an example) that requires transportation of heavy loads, your statement would not apply.
      Applying your way of thinking, which is formatted by your life style to others is basically wrong. Lots of people have lots of different lives, and YES some do need a car for living.
      Though were you do have a point, is most people that think they need one (especially those living in cities) actually don't. It's just twisted to apply that to everyone regardless of their situation...

    People do need to stop getting in the car for a journey just to local shop's or a coffee.
    I use mine to go to the office mostly about 15 mins away on the e bike. Of course not everyone is lucky to have their work close to them.
    But problem is with heavier bulky items like a TV. So easy to fit it in the boot.(can be offset by asking for home delivery I suppose)
    Cars take multiple people on a long journey also. Can't see a mother of 3-4 in a morning rush riding on an e bike with young children lol.
    An e bike suits a certain type of person like a uni student or someone in a block of flats and the parking is abysmal. Or someone in London after all a bicycle beat a car on Top Gear.

    • @chillout1109
      @chillout1109 3 года назад

      @@honeybadger9425 Cyclists have been pushing for change for a couple of years now. There have been online petition pages and online forums on such issues as legalizing e-scooters, increasing ebike pedal assist limit from 15.5mph to 20-25mph at least, and legalizing throttle assisted ebikes (without the need for motorcycle licences and insurance, which is the case at the moment). But the government hasn't done anything about any of that yet. However, we may see a bit of change in the near future as the UK gets under more and more pressure to be carbon net zero in the coming years. New diesel and petrol cars will no longer be allowed to be sold in the UK from 2030. New hybrid diesel/petrol cars will no longer be allowed to be sold in the UK from 2035. A lot of people are going to be forced out their petrol/diesel cars as emission rules make it unpleasant to drive such cars on UK roads for much longer. A lot of drivers are going to choose to cycle rather than buy electric vehicles, which are still very expensive and therefore out of reach of the general public at the moment. E-scooters and ebikes are probably going to explode in number as ex-drivers switch over to these cheaper alternatives. The government will have to change some legislation to adapt to such a shift in dermographics in order to accommodate the rise in these personal mobility vehicles. Fingers crossed 🤞, throttle assist and removal of 15.5 mph limits might be included in the new legislation. Unfortunately, at the moment, it's still illegal to ride a throttle assisted cycle on public roads. It's still illegal to ride a private e-scooter on public roads. And it's still illegal to ride an ebike that has the 15.5mph pedal assist limit tampered with in some way (derestricting). But many cyclists, some of whom I personally know, just break these rules anyway. Like you and the rider in this video, their argument is, if you don't ride like a lunatic and draw attention to yourself, or if you don't put other road users at risk, what's the harm? As long as you ride like a normal sane person, the police will never know what you are riding, and will therefore never need to bother you, is the argument.

    Pick a bike that suits your style based upon geometry and comfort, eg an adventure gravel ebike and or STD bike ads accessories and your done.

    I bought a nice electric bike with a in chassis battery, and NEVER AGAIN. The battery died, and was near impossible to replace (and very expensive). If I ever went ebike again, I'd definitely get a standards based generic connector external battery. (Swapped to escooter instead, my $2000 ebike is rusting)..

    Replacing a car? Of course not. There are trips that a bike can cover for sure. For example, travelling a short distance to work, to the local shops, or to the gym. Then there are trips where the bike is impractical. For example, visiting friends and family 160 miles away, going for your monthly grocery trip, going on a holiday trip. And oh, not to mention that when it snows, rains, or when it's windy, the bike will never be a substitute for a car. The best way to do it is to have a car and a bike. Make as many trips as you possibly can on your bike, with the car covering the rest. I live 11.5 miles outside the city. I have a car and two bikes (one urban/road bike and one Full Suspension eMTB). While I love my bikes very much, my car is indispensable I'm afraid.

    • @FFVoyager
      @FFVoyager 3 года назад

      You go for a 'monthly grocery trip'? Eh?
      Actually with a bit of a redesign e-bikes could quite easily replace cars. But folk with little imagination only want to buy Victorian safety bicycles. Have a look at what Moulton was doing 60 years ago when he redesigned the bicycle using smaller wheels which allows much more luggage space. If you want weather protection I'd look at recumbents with a bit of bodywork - but they are more motorcycle than bicycle.

    • @chillout1109
      @chillout1109 3 года назад

      @@FFVoyager What you've descibed sounds like personal mobility for a single person, in and around a limited area. Even the best recumbent/velomobile, complete with electric pedal assist and full weather protection, cannot travel a 320 mile round trip. Even if it could, why torture yourself like that as if you are serving time for some heinous crime? Live a little (especially when you, like me, have worked hard all your life, and finally got that high paying job you've always dreamt of). Like I mentioned before, I do ride my bikes a lot (as does my wife too). Local shops, work commute, gym commute, local recreation, are all mostly done on bikes.
      I have a wife, a 10 year old step daughter, a 7 year old daughter, and a 2 year old son. My in-laws live 72 miles from where I live at the moment. And my own mum and dad live 160 miles away. I'm not making my family cycle such distances. Nor am I cycling such distances either.
      And yes, I do go on monthly shopping trips. When you have a family, where young children are involved, some household items are cheaper and much more convenient to buy in bulk rather than to buy them every time they run out. Only perishables are what we buy on a weekly basis or as and when needed. Try putting one month's worth of shopping even in a cargo bike!
      Basing this on my own personal circumstances, a bike, or bikes, no matter what they are, cannot completely replace my car at the moment. That's just me.

    Seems to be strictly geared towards customers in large European cities, who will treat a bike kinda like how Toyota Corolla owners treat their car (barely touch the car aside from when driving it). $2500 for a 250w motor is a real turn off for any NA consumer as we can get at least 500w motors for ~$1500. Single gear system/250w motor is also a turn off for those who live in areas with large hills. Lights and controller integrated into the frame makes getting replacement parts/upgrades impossible (unless going through the company). It also looks like the mounting points for traditional bike parts (back racks/front baskets) aren't there, which means your completely reliant on the company for attachments. On the plus side the bike looks sexy, and is probably light by ebike standards. The bike app also give you a GPS locater if it ever gets stolen. Kinda gives off the vibes they are trying to be like the Apple in the ebike industry.

    Two grand for a push bike, you're having a laugh. Didn't tell us anything about range, weight etc. The little blanking plug for the clip on accessories will disappear after a week and why anyone would design a bike that you have to turn upside down to get the battery out I don't understand. You could buy a cheap 50cc scooter and run it for a year for the price of this and testing a bike in the 'flat' centre of London doesn't really give me a lot of confidence in it's hill climbing abilities.
    Don't get me wrong I'm all for sustainable transport but until they relax the rules on the motor power on pushbikes they will never convince me. Got an electric bike sitting at home unused because I live in a place with hills and the battery goes flat way too quick if I try climbing them with the piddly little motor.
