This is the most comprehensive and easy to follow video on replacing iPhone 5 power button. Other short videos just give instruction and do not show actual parts and screws and that leads to confusion and (potentially unrecoverable) error. Great video and keep it up. That said, even following the video, it took about 4 to 5 hours to...mainly because everything is so tiny and fragile, and it's hard to take things apart and put them back in.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that a machine does this at the factory. Definitely high on the difficulty or at least tedium scale but if you pulled it off take a bow. Not many have the patience for it.
To be honest, after I took it all apart, I had low confidence that it can be put back together in working condition. I lost track of few screws in and ended up with 3 screws that wouldn't fit. LOL. But in the end, the phone actually worked, and the power button was really fixed. I paid $3 for the power button from China. The only problem is volume button feel like they are locked and do not work. I just ordered a replacement LCD digitizer assembly, and when I will try to fix the volume button while replacing the LCD. Any hints on why the volume buttons feel like they are stuck. They don't click. Thanks.
I've seen that happen with housing replacements and backing one or both screws off about a quarter of a turn might help. If you notice that makes a difference try playing with them until the buttons feel right.
Oh my gosh, you helped me and my dad soooo much, we followed you every step of the way. And then came the final push of the power button...The Apple logo showed!!!! And it butted up flawlessly!! And the power button works!!! It took us a bout 2 hours and 30 minutes. Thank you soooo much, I'm so subscribing! :-)
That was my first iphone repair (wife's) and your video made my life soooo much easier! Well explained, no background music, just perfect! Other videos on youtube show the dudes disassemble the thing but they never get it back together and you just can't go in reverse, there is so much more to look after! Thanks again, I owe you a beer, lemme know how I can at least donate a few bucks
Thank you. That's actually the main reason that I started this channel. A lot of people show how to take something apart but re-assembly is not always as easy as "just do the revers of this process".
finally after searching for hours i finally found a video that actually helps on putting the flex cable back in the phone and reassembling the phone. video help me a lot thank you so much , i liked and subscribed to you.
Just finished fixing an iphone power button, with added battery change, all thanks to this fantastic walkthrough. Fortunately it seems flex cables these days have the metal clips attached so didn't have to mess around with a soldering gun. Excellent guide, very thorough and I can only hope I don't have to fiddle with tiny screws again for a long time to come.
Absolutely perfect. Thanks for explaining why you're doing things, and reminding me to reconnect certain parts first. Some videos only show the tear down. Putting it back together is tricky too.
Thanks. Yeah that's what always annoyed me is people showing the easy part but not what to do with all the pieces once you are ready to put it back together.
Definitely going to be using this as a guide as a attempt to replace my power button and my battery in my iPhone 5 next week. Great quality and highly informative video.
It's been very helpful i am really glad that annoying assesive touch button disappeared from my screen much thanks to you. At first i accidently tear my screen apart then i managed to put it together and remove my screen as whole but i was really scared of the thought that i bricked my phone at very first step :) also i get the flex cable pre built with the metal parts and such. thought the manufacturers are watching your videos :) anyway i replaced my battery and the power button with your video i really appreciate it!
Awesome video man. Love the fact you go all the way through the repair as opposed to just the disassembly. My iPhone 5 is supposed to be eligible for the program, but since it's 3 years and a month after the date of sale, I'm a month out of the warranty and Apple would want well over $300 for the repair. I'm reasonably handy with tools and modelling, so this is something I can do. Whether I want to...that's a different story. Going to look and see what the local shops want to charge for this.
Wow. Absolute rock. Most difficult phone repair I've done. Only took me 3 hours! Video is brilliant though, don't look at any of the 5 minute ones on this site where they miss out every other screw. Also, if you have sausage fingers or the DTs or both, then do not attempt, just throw phone in landfill.
there are many videos I found on this topic, but none was so well in explaining how to deal with power button, which in my opinion is a real pain. Thank you. And yes it is best to test power button clicks before doing anything further. Otherwise you risk wasting quite a bit of time.
My old iPhone 5's lock button wasnt working and neither was the speaker and was just out of the 3 year warranty. Followed your guide and it now works perfectly! Regarding the ear speaker i found that the screw holding it in place was loose so it worked fine once tightened. Took me around 2 hours, didnt use any of the adhesive coz i didnt have any and only lost 1 screw lol! Thank you very much!
thank u for this guide! my power button replacement was very easy because of your video :) your calm voice and step by step orders are very usefull for my iphone repair! greatings from germany (sorry for my bad english :P)
Hi, it's a shame you don't ship internationally. This was an excellent walkthrough, I used this to fix my power button, replacing the battery and screen along the way. I'd never done anything this intricate before but it worked perfectly... ended up having fun! Thanks for taking a good amount of time and describing the situation clearly (eg. one of the most important points, don't fully tighten switch screws).
Thank you. I am a newby. Your video presentation is very clear. You are obviously a very patient person for a start, which is very crucial important for your tutorial which is watched by viewers who are not necessarily all tech savvy and experienced in the field. You have all required to explain the every bits and pieces' dos and don't s, to avoid future disaster(s) for beginner like me. Only one slight suggestion if I may, at certain stage, the object moved away from the center camera, which resulting of getting more of your left hand. Suggestion: before you start, wouldn't it be better to draw a rectangle outline the same size of the phone itself on table so your presentation will always stays on the camera focus. I enjoyed your presentation. Thank you so much
Thank you very much for the comment and suggestion. I try to keep everything in view as much as possible these days by paying closer attention to the camera. This video was recorded quite a while back and could have been better in a few different places. The audio in particular makes me cringe a bit but I'm glad that you found it somewhat helpful.
Thank you so much for the video! I had a recall on my iphone a but I waited too long so they wouldn't honor it. They wanted to charge me $270 to fix a button that cost less than $10 on amazon. I managed to fix it in about an hour and a half and saved $260 bucks!
very good video, quite a hard repair and I've been repairing iPhones for friends for years as an amateur. the only time i can remember a harder repair was the same type of flex cable for the 3gs.
Herzlichen Danke! Dank Ihrer Anleitung hat der Wechsel des defekten Powerbutten inklusive Flex-Kabel wunderbar funktioniert! Super Video!!! Gruß, Kiesi......
Thank you so much for a great video. I followed your video step by step and i was able to fix the power/sleep&button. You explained really well along with the steps...thank you once again..
Thank you SO much for posting this. You are literally amazing. I followed your directions exactly and did a perfect install on the first try. (aside from losing one screw that made me frustrated. :/
Cool. I actually found an easier way to get the power button flex to go under the actual button without removing the whole piece. Kind of hard to explain but I'll make an updated video soon.
I've replaced a home button on the 3gs before and now that the power button is gone on my iphone 5 I was thinking of repairing myself since I dont live in a country that has apple repairmen. After looking at this video though, I'm not so confident about taking it on anymore. Sigh. I hate the virtual button to lock the screen etc. Plus following any crash or anything, I need to plug up to power the phone on. Looks like I'll be stuck with it this way for a while unless I end up feeling confident enough to tackle this repair.
Thank you, i followed you and i spend nice 1:30 hour with that :) ... Old phone to do such a service, but 1 usd repair and hour work and its working again.. Thanks !
Jesus Christ. I have to thank you so much. I had never opened an iphone before. Except to change the batterry. And I opened it that time. Because I tought it was dead. And found out the baterry was not plugged in correctly. I had bought a new one. And when I decided to open it, found out I just needed to connect it properly. I dropped it so many times. Now... My power button did not work properly. And saw lots of videos on youtube that said that cleaning it from the outside with alcohol improved it. Well... I wanted to go all out and clean it correctly so it works correctly, not improved. So I found your video. And I got scared when I had all the parts out, and I was like... Holly shit, Im I gonna be able to put it back together. And I followed your steps. And at the end pressed the power button. And saw the apple logo come up. Cant describe the satisfaction. Regardless of if the cleaning of the power button (wich was terribly dirty inside) fixed my issue or not, now I am confident that I can repair my iphone, and if I have to replace the all chip for the power, I know I can. So, Sir. Seriously. Thank you very much. You have teached me so much with this video. And... The phone is on. Now I will see if the cleaning of the power button fixed my issue... I will let you know in a few seconds. Thank you so much.
Great video! I followed all ur steps and I'm having problems with the silent/loud button.. The button itself works properly as far as moving up and down but it doesn't do anything as far as going back and forth from silent to loud.. Any suggestions? The power button is fixed though and working properly!
Sometimes that piece can be difficult to install properly. Can you confirm that the outer part is actuating the switch? If it isn't aligned properly it may seem like it is switching back and forth but not really moving the part that controls the function. Probably the best thing to do is remove that pat of the flex cable and test to see if it works right before it is inside of the phone. If there is a problem with your replacement part you don't want to waste time thinking that it was installed improperly. If it does in fact work then it has to have ended up in the wrong position when you installed it. Also just to confirm you aren't seeing any indication on the phone screen that shows the muted speaker icon correct?
I can't thank you enough for posting this video. It is one that I believe is the must accurate in showing true difficulty. I do not want to attempt this repair, so what is a fair cost for this to have done locally in my area of Houston Texas?
skiboyscuba By the way always check with Apple first. There was a known issue with the power buttons so sometimes even slightly outside of the warranty period they may be willing to swap your phone out. It's worth a shot.
Aloha, the power button on my iPhone5 works 1/8 to the time and sometimes it flickers on/off back and forth then it carries towards the screen for full shut down slide bar. Does this mean I have to change to tape cable like you did on the great vid or is it a bad connection that I may be able to fix by reconnecting? Thanks for any help you can provide, you're awesome!!!
@Simon B No problem and I do appreciate the offer. Rather than taking donations at this time my plan is to create a product that people like as well as find useful. When that happens I hope that you will consider checking it out. I'll be sure to announce it to all subscribers when that time comes. Congrats on the repair!
Go Cell Phone Repair My Phone was attaced to a charger not the official one and it got burned while it was connected to the electricity and it turned off and wont turn back on so i took it to a technician in my country morocco (not sure of his skills) and he told me that the motherboard is dead and i don't know what to do because honestly i don't believe him and i don't want to loose a lot of money for a new motherboard so would you help me please.it's an Iphone 5
Thank you for that video! I got half way through another iPhone 5 repair video (it was a woman in the video) and it was totally useless. I didn't realise how sh*t the other video was until I was half way through, removing screw and etc.Your repair video was spot on and my iPhone now works perfectly. Thanks again dude!!
On the replacement modul I had plates for everything, but I had to replace the on from the volume part because the valume down button was always pushed in with the replacement plate. I thought I should share it with you if you struggle with the replacement plate :D
Can You help to Me dear uploader? If the problem not with the cable how You said.. Where is on the mother board, than how its possible to fix it? The second cable not working... :/ So probably the motherboard have problem. Thanks the video! Really helpful!! Kind Best regards
You may not reply since this is a pretty old video, but I’m swapping the flex cable from one housing to another since this new iPhone I got doesn’t have a functioning power button, I’m assuming that since I’m pulling it off another housing I don’t need to remove all the little metal pieces since it’s already got them?
I followed your tutorial and did the same but the button remains dead. Unfortunately i couldn't see is button clicking and turning the Phone off. Anyway thanks it is one of the better posts.
I have added a link on the iPhone 5 pages to the iScrews holder. A lot of our newer technicians seem to like them. Other than that a magnetic mat works well.
Perfect seeks e video. Not gonna lie, this was probably the hardest repair I've done on the iPhone 5. Also.... After I replaced the power flex cable, my wifi antenna seems really weak. It only picks up signal for wifi when I'm standing 1ft away from the modem, could I have ripped the antenna? You think if I replace that now it will solve it? Because it was working perfectly rly gone prior to replacing the power cable
Exhalerr r Are you ytalking about the wire that attaches to the back of the logic board? If that was damaged then yes your WIFI signal will be very weak. They are pretty easy to replace.
Yes. I remember I had a hard time glueing the power flex cable trying to not glue on top on the antenna when it goes around the little screw. I might have damaged it then. That's the only thing I can think of because it was working fine before that. Going to replace it today. Thank you ft the video, it's honestly the best out there
Very easy to follow. I had a "F***, what have I done" moment when I'd taken it all apart but it really wasn't that hard to put back together. Instead of a soldering iron, I heated up the flat head screw driver to melt the little plastic parts of the mute switch.
sakurito55 Then you can't turn it on. The only time your phone will be off is most likely when your battery dies. In which case you need a charger anyways.
It was relatively easy to line up. You just have to be patient. All the double sided tape is already on the new ribbon. Take your time and you should be ok. This video is great as it is really precise.
thanks for good explanation.BUT i have problem with iphone 5 home+power button.it was my mistake because during replacement of battery it happen. i broke U3 IC from board . NOW my Question is how i can reconnect it .Do you have any idea for that ???? i see in video you use an heat gun ! it is ok for that saturation to repair it for solder . So plz Ans as soon as possible......
My front camera doesn't work this happened when I opened my phone for the first time I have a iPhone 5 what could this be do I need a new camera and flex cable or is there any other repair could I have disconnected it when taking the screen out by pulling on the wire too much ? Please help me thanks
☆Official_TIH / ITz-TIH__ ☆XBL:HitLikeAverage The front facing camera cable is very fragile. If you can take a close look at it like under a magnifying glass you might be able to see if it was torn during the repair. They are pretty cheap if you need to buy a replacement though.
done in one time. but i am also a car mechanic at VW/AUDI service think thats why i think. but anyways thank you mister i appreciate your work and help for it!!!!
You are very welcome and congrats. You know the funny thing is that I never did my own auto repairs until I got into fixing phones. While being two very different things the whole concept of mechanics shares so many elements between the them.
i have a question. My screen got pushed out of the casing because of the battery swelling up i presume and my rear camera stopped working as well all of the sudden. Do you know what could have happened on the inside to it? which cable could it have been ?
@RobTheSamplist Oh man that stupid silent switch on the 3G/3GS flex cable! That was the biggest pain ever. I have to say though that the 2G was, if not as difficult, more dangerous. I can't even remember how many times we cut ourselves cracking that one open.
i gave up on my 3gs mute switch after an hour i think i broke a small plastic part so it would never go back right! its still flops about and doesn't click to this day.
btw if i could have one critiscism it would be try and shoot in 1080 as its easier to see what screw you pick up if someone is trying to figure that out.
RobTheSamplist I was gonna go 4K but it seems like most people will end up with huge lag. 1080 would probably be fine. The only issue being the file size on a video of this length when rendered. I'll see what I can come up with though. Thanks for the suggestion.
i thought that, must take an absolute age to upload. by the way i have two iPhone 5s the one i just fixed i brought second hand for my gf and fixed the power button, but on my iphone the lcd screen has come away from the digitiser?.and I'm wondering how to get it to stick together or if it mattters... my bumper case holds it from coming open and it doesn't come off anyway with the small amount of old glue but id like to know if theres a way of sticking them back together. i pulled them apart with a suction cup on the screen to get it to open slightly so i could get my pry tool to the rubber and as i did that the dam glass lifted from the plate. is the second piece underneath the digitiser? sorry for the long winded shit.
RobTheSamplist The digitizer is on the back of the lens. I've seen what you are describing and I wouldn't recommend glue if you can avoid it. If it leaks into the screen you'll probably end up with visible blemishes and glues like superglue can actually melt the plastic. It's kind of a pain to fix depending on how much of the glass lifted but heavy duty double sided adhesive is probably the best option.

No problem. Thank you.
Thanks so much, my friend. I was able to replace my little girl's on/off function thanks to you. Keep up the great vids!

Great video. This repair took me a little over two exhausting hours to complete. I guess I should have looked at the video length first!
After 4.5 years, this video is still useful. Thanks!

Thanks. Yeah, this one is a lot more involved that most iPhone 5 repairs.
Your the man I cant believe I pulled this off I feel like a beast all thanks TO YOU
When you pull this off you are a beast. Congrats!
Great step by step explanation. Can you tell me where I can find the 3M adhesive ? And what they call it ? where they are selling it.? Thanks

Also just to confirm you aren't seeing any indication on the phone screen that shows the muted speaker icon correct?
Great tutorial, helped me repair my iPhone successfully
Amazing tutorial - saved me lots of $$ - thanks for taking the time to do this!
I can't thank you enough for posting this video. It is one that I believe is the must accurate in showing true difficulty. I do not want to attempt this repair, so what is a fair cost for this to have done locally in my area of Houston Texas?
As you saw there is quite a bit of time involved. You can expect to pay somewhere around $75 for this with parts and labor.
Thank you .....after seeing this I have to say that wound be a fair cost. Thank u
skiboyscuba By the way always check with Apple first. There was a known issue with the power buttons so sometimes even slightly outside of the warranty period they may be willing to swap your phone out. It's worth a shot.
That was my next question. Does apple fix them if out of warranty??
I Checked with Apple and my phone is covered
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS IT WORKED PERFECT THANKS TO THIS DETAILED VIDEO ...
Awesome, thanks.
Thanks pal ,ive just changed my power button watching ur video.very helpfull.many many thanks.keep doing this kinda good job pal.cheers
Thank you very much.
Excellent tutorial, this is not for the faint-hearted - if you do this mark where every screw has come from!!
I really appreciate this video. Thank you, now my iPhone's power button works perfectly ;D
No problem.
@Simon B No problem and I do appreciate the offer. Rather than taking donations at this time my plan is to create a product that people like as well as find useful. When that happens I hope that you will consider checking it out. I'll be sure to announce it to all subscribers when that time comes. Congrats on the repair!
After i put everything together there is a line in the screen
N.H A. H This is usually a connector that is not seated properly. For more info: gocellphonerepair.com/how-t/troubleshooting/

Jono Bruce Cool. I'm glad you got through it okay.

Excellent.
Kind
Best regards
thank you very much mate!!! just finish replace the flex cable by watching this video ,and it works!! thanks for the video!!!!!
Good work!
Thanks it helped alot. But at the end my phone doesnt vibrate anymore..is it possible that i tightened the screws too much? Or i didnt connect it?
Thank you very much, now my iPhone works perfectly! :)
You may not reply since this is a pretty old video, but I’m swapping the flex cable from one housing to another since this new iPhone I got doesn’t have a functioning power button, I’m assuming that since I’m pulling it off another housing I don’t need to remove all the little metal pieces since it’s already got them?
awesome video, followed along and fixed my phone Thank You
I followed your tutorial and did the same but the button remains dead. Unfortunately i couldn't see is button clicking and turning the Phone off. Anyway thanks it is one of the better posts.
thank you very much, very useful! any tips on how sorting out the screws?
I have added a link on the iPhone 5 pages to the iScrews holder. A lot of our newer technicians seem to like them. Other than that a magnetic mat works well.
+Mehrdad Ha i bought this case wich looks like an iphone and got holes in it in the same location as in the phone so you just put it in there :)
Thank you for this! Great tutorial. I tried following Ifixit's tutorial and they left out so much.
Thank you ft the video, it's honestly the best out there
Exhalerr r is your phone better.
Exhalerr r plz tell me if it worked for u asap, i have same problem!
Yes King Black! It solved my problem. Go back in there and replace the antenna.. At least mine worked.
Very easy to follow. I had a "F***, what have I done" moment when I'd taken it all apart but it really wasn't that hard to put back together. Instead of a soldering iron, I heated up the flat head screw driver to melt the little plastic parts of the mute switch.
Basically we learned today, just use assistive touch
the problem i see is if you turn the phone off how you turn it on again?.
+sakurito55 Youd have to plug it into a charger.
Go Cell Phone Repair what if i dont have a charger near me?
sakurito55 Then you can't turn it on. The only time your phone will be off is most likely when your battery dies. In which case you need a charger anyways.
Well my button is jammed in so it keeps pressing it
The cable a bought from i fixit already had the metal parts installed. Much much easier to put in.
Sorry but I do not have experience with replacing IC on this phone.
Thanks man you helped me a lot ^_^ , i fixed my power button successfully
Thanks for the video. But why you not transplanted rear microphone from old flex cable?
That is a good question. It's been a while since I've done this repair. I will take a look at one tomorrow.
Amazing tutorial! Thanks much!! It work at the perfection!!
Are cables for volume buttons from iphone 5, 5s, SE compatible? Can I take this circuit from 5s and set it to SE?
cant seem to get the power button to click no matter what i do
Thank you for this video. There is a lot of job. :) I think that is much easier to change but I m wrong.
you really amazing sir , i follow up your steps and now its work great
thanks for your amazing video and info ,, thanx
Thank you.
Excellent Tutorial. Thanks.
Go Cell Phone Repair i am waiting your ans dear?
Big shout out to you, this is a great video
my vibrator stopped working after this repair, is there any mistake I I would have made or maybe I didn't place properly?
i have a question. My screen got pushed out of the casing because of the battery swelling up i presume and my rear camera stopped working as well all of the sudden. Do you know what could have happened on the inside to it? which cable could it have been ?
Followed. This worked perfectly. Thanks buddy :)
Thank you.
My dad says a sheet or stencil type item would be very useful to keep track of the screws, and he would buy anything you come up with for repairs :)
+Zach Miller Glad you were able to get your phone working again. I've added a few things here: gocellphonerepair.com/organizational-tools/
+Go Cell Phone Repair I'm sold on that:-)
@RobTheSamplist Oh man that stupid silent switch on the 3G/3GS flex cable!
THANK YOU.... this is SO helpful!
thank you very much!
this video really helped me.
Very impressive work!
Thank you.
Great guide. Thank you.
