NVIDIA Texture Tools -- A Shockingly Powerful Free Tool!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 мар 2020
- Today NVIDIA have announced a new release of their free Texture Tools. Used to compress textures in a multitude of different formats, generate normal, cube and mip maps and more, all while GPU accelerated... and completely free. It can be driven from the command line or using a Photoshop plugin.

i will forever have fond memories of when people talked about covid like it was voldemort
Is great to know this tool still updated, i remember him as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop CS3 in 2010, used for modding in some games, was funny way to start in graphics development just trough click and mistake.
I wish and your family a good health for the next weeks and months. Thanks for the nice videos and articles! I love them ❤️🧡💛
Thank you for the review.. but i need to correct you.. mipmaps actually need a bit more memory because more different resolutions need to be saved to memory.. its advantage is in rendering textures that are further away and is a bit faster because it can use a smaller version and looks a bit better when far away, eliminating moire and similar artefacts.. and you can interpolate between different mipmap sizes to make transitions look even nicer by using trilinear interpolation.. one for mag, min and mipmap.
Ahhh the batching is a great feature. I assume the mitmapping is better than built in game engine stuff? or just has more control?
If I were to compress texture maps with this and then render 3D images with them using Iray, would that mean I could fit more textures on my GeForce card while rendering the scene? Textures take up a lot of space in the card's memory, which limits the size any scene can be without trickery.
depends if your rendered will happily use compressed textures(idk iray).... i would say yes, its maybe gonna half your vram usage.
Thanks, this looks super helpful! Concerning free tools for normal map generation, this looks really powerful, especially with the effects stacking. How does it compare to other free options out there as far as flexibility and quality?
"You need to be running a 64bit version of Windows 7,8 or 10 and texture tools requires an NVIDIA GPU."
Shockingly powerful, and unshockingly NVIDIA only.
Just for Nvidia?😢
@Artisan Socialist law protecting companies? What the fuck are you even saying? No offence but bashing socialism and then demanding open source code in the next sentence makes it appear you have no idea what either of these terms mean
@uRs7up1d: No doubt, but it also can backfire, in that AMD could come up with the same AND make it open for everyone...including Nvidia. That gains marketshare AND mindshare. There's something to be said about thinking beyond oneself.
@Artisan I despise socialism just as much as the next guy but you gotta get your head checked mate.
What is strange here, Nvidia put money, effort to develop this software, so this is his property, moar, why they will waste his resources to make this tool AMD compatible? You probably think that this are one button solution :D Or they can make $hity conversion like AMD with his toy Pro Render™ which barely work with Nvidia cards. Also, no one serious artist use AMD cards.... PERIOD. (Same is for MAC) This is not rightly, but this is current situation, Take it, or cry like spoiled child. Bigger problem is lack of support for linux, but this obviously are to much for your braiiin.
It would be amazing if you provided the feature to combine multiple .dds files into one for those who want to create custom miMaps that are visually different from each other.
the numbers of Mipmap levels are done automatically according to the size of the texture, you can't have a 1k texture with only 2 levels of mip maps for example
very well done video! How do you capture or make those T shaped textures? Is there a tutorial for that?
I thought most game engines were automatically converting textures to BC7, etc..
At least Unreal doing it on import.
Pretty much, as far as I understand it if you're using Unreal or Unity this tool is not needed.
They do and you can go without this tool. But there's some cool tricks you can do when you've control over mipping. Crazy but fun example: place an entirely different textures in mips and piggyback off the mip fader for distance-based dynamic texture swaps.
Unity imports textures as BC7, and UE4 as dxt1. BC7 looks better, has less artifacts, but eats slightly more Vram. You can use BC7 in unreal too (Directx 11 - 12)
There is a 3D software for architectural visualization called Lumion.
I was working on a large project and had some memory problems (not enough vram) on my GPU.
At first i was thinking about to downgrade texture resolution from 4K to 2K.
After some research i found out a similar tool, Photoshop plugin, made by Intel, it's called 'Intel Texture Works'. I've re-exported my texture files as .DDS with no resolution change and voila, it nearly halved GPU VRAM utilization. Man, that tool saved my project ;D
Unreal does, but this tool is also useful for generating cubemaps which can be used to create fake interiors on windows.
Seems no issue running this on my 5700XT, try installing PhysX System Software if no NV GPU is present
May I ask using this tool, how can I save a dds file with the alpha channel that I generated myself in PS rather than the alpha channel based on the transparency? With NVIDIA's old version tool or Intel's tool I can do that but with this one it simply ignores my alpha channel and generate alpha channel based on the transparent area
nvm it's a bug so we can't for now
What GUI library is that app built on? QT?
Need help!!
Basically, I need to create a DDS file that contains both Normal Map and Color Map as a single file
Is that even possible?
If my question is wrong, how do I combine Normal Map and Color Map from Photoshop as a single file of game texture?
This is for modding the game that already existed
My understanding from this video is that he did Exported Color Map and Normal Map as separate file, which is not what I'm looking for
Where is the list of batch commands?
The brief example Nvidia provided isn't very useful, since you have to name each file you want to convert. I want to batch process every PNG file in a folder.
Also need the commands for compression quality and mipmaps etc.
Don't comment about you-know-what, the video might get demonetized. Videos that mention it have been deleted.
Could we use this in Affinity Photo?
doesn't work with amd card on my computer, which the older version does, that's suck for new update.......
I can't save my work. Whenever I try to save a normal map it says ''Was unable to open the file ... for writing! internal info nvttui:ExportPlugin: SaveCurrentImageToFileName, line 1062'' tried to google it, but nobody else is asking for this type of error lol
A tool for creating mipmaps is very cool.
Mentioning Voldemort a day, keeps the RUclips bot away (from recommending videos in the feed).
I can't find 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32 bpp option for saving file
apart from direct DDS export with mipmaps and compression seems kinda pointless tbh. its not really got anything photoshop or gimp doesn't have.
Why does itch.io ask for patent rights? They don't need patent rights unless they are trying to resell your game as their own.
👑
Can anyone grab this? I'm not in the industry but I am a hobbyist that uses DDS and recently discovered that gimp's own DDS export really isn't great
turns out you can, pretty easily, no checks etc. required
does any one know how to input and use animated tile in tilemap editor?
i am using libgdx to make game for my FYP
how do you open the tool?
how in AMD?
Wdym you can't mention it? Literally every channel on my feed mentions it atleast 1 time a day.
Does this tool allow to bake Ambient Occlusion directly on a 3d mesh?
Oh yeah, there was a Windows 8.
😂
covid-19
ok. I said it
The video might get demonetized, or even deleted, if he mentions it.
You can say it. I cannot.
Yeah, the bots autodeleting is the scariest part
Gamefromscratch yeah I know it's terrible.
It is better this way, there is no need to date the video so heavily
S H O K I N G L Y
What about RUclips channel- malcolm341. I really heard about this addon from him 1 year ago.
NVIDIA CEO IS A NEVER-TRUMPER
Its not free if it only works on their cards... but what did you expect from the black-box company
Ø$=Windows
I would have liked that in 2005. It's useless today.
Hi
Hey
@@Peak_Stone hey
There showed "CUDA error 35" but it seemed to be working with AMD GPU. But the UI is rubbish. It does not scale at all on a 4K monitor. Also, I had to sign up their "preview programme" to download it and it had a gender option for "non-binary".
What thing you are not allowed to say? Don't be a tool
you can also use this pretty much - boundingboxsoftware.com/materialize/
Wtf, are you serious if you mention what's up in the world...you get screwed here?
LESS TALK.
Go to the point.
~ minute one: you can't use it and it's very annoying...
Lol, I like when you get straight to the point like this, but I also don't really feel like finishing the video.
Bla bla bla bla bla bla...
unuseful software today
man, speak slower (or in normal time), you are explaining something new and you don't have time to process the information, nothing is understood
Try DXTBMP more simpler program. This program i can not use is too complicated. You can not create a DDS texture with alpha included. With DXTBMP is very easy.Dislike!
Aren't unity mipmaps decent enough? Is this tool much better at mipmaps than unity?
