A week ago I downloaded the Kindle version of the 1944 Diaries, the diary was written by Frank Capstick who served on board what we know as Sirinda but back in 1944 it was a naval vessel supporting the fleet and took more than an active role in the D Day landings I believe Simon & Gemma have targeted having the ship ready to join the 80th anniversary celebrations. It really is a good read, yes there are lots of days just going to stores and cleaning but there were many days dodging the German mines and air attacks, all of which Frank captured in his daily diary. In the great scheme of things it not expensive and is a good way to support the work Simon & Gemma are doing in trying hard to renovate this historic ship…..so well worth either buying the paperback or downloading the Kindle version to support the cause as I understand all profits go into the project.
Hi Derek, thank you for the wonderful feedback, I’m so happy you enjoyed the book, it’s great to be able to look back in time from 80 years ago! It’s the history that made us fall in love with the boat. We appreciate your support xx
I agree with Derek. I purchased the book as well. Fascinating read and after reading, I find that watching your videos has me thinking about Frank and his tasks as referenced in this. From the wheelhouse cleaning to painting chores amazing documentation of life aboard her. You both are doing an awesome job in this restoration !!!
I'd love to see the build of your new shop. Can't see people complaining, as you're working on milling for Sarinda in it when built, and saving money in the long run, so more money to spend on Sarinda.
Building the shop will be another adventure so, channel 2? Yes, definitely include it. Maybe throw in a "Live" every once in a while. Finish the build with a big 2 hour hilight bonanza. You have good content.
Yes please! A series of videos showing your shop build is a great idea. The banter you two have would be missing if you just did a single complete build or time lapse. We want it all!!!
Definite yes on the workshop. Definite no on wasting time filling the holes in the boards. It would be much easier to put up a very thin plywood, or the thin shiny stuff they put in bathrooms it's easy to wash off. You two are so wonderful. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
You probably won't see this, but been watching most all of this project. Got here watching sailing channels. I've pretty much quit those but still look forward to watching you guys. Seems like you two are very well matched for personality and work ethics. From the outside I see a great friendship/marriage/partnership and a really cool project that illustrates your talents. Being American, It was hard to understand through the accents and some of the terminology at first, but now I can turn the closed caption off and get along just fine. Thanks for including us in your journey! Best wishes, and keep it coming.
Weighing into the sanding holes debate - I think those bulkheads look amazing because of the way they’re aged. Filling them makes them less beautiful! :)
Simon your work will be faster by using a set of drill bits, like a set of sockets, you can find the correct one immediately. So when one is broken replace it and keep the set complete, or like me when I leave a socket in the engine I buy another.
I get that re-engineering the electrics in that compartment isn't repairing the structure in the engine room, which is the priority, BUT I suspect the generator will be a key enabler, because it will allow you to use power tools more on board, meaning you can work faster on other things, _like_ structure. So you can make a case that sorting the new electrical panel & getting the generator going IS the priority, because it make so much else on the boat possible...
Yes to seeing the shed build, in whichever format suits you not us. As for that wall Gemma is right save time right now and just paint it to make it look fresh until you know exactly what you're doing with it
Hi,I would love to watch you build your workshop in whatever way you decide, because it is always a pleasure to listen to your cheerful banter while you work so well together. It is like a happy time. Cheers ,Roly🇬🇧.
It’s a ship not a yacht, fill the big holes and paint it! 😁 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻 You guys should consider an exhaust fan to remove the dust out the portal windows.
Thank you for the Mental Health help info pinned in the video description - we have a long way to normalizing mental health and I appreciate your sincere efforts. Best to you, your family, and the lovely Sarinda.
I’m loving the build. I’m fine with what you call ‘repetition’. Each episode has different nuances, challenges, construction and banter between you both. Keep them coming 👊🙏
I can't believe I've been watching this channel for three years. Another five years is going to pass quickly I imagine. Stay focused on her hull and core health. You gotta have her ready for the anniversary.
Another excellent episode! Thanks Gemma and Simon. One thing you didn't mention was how successful was the attempt to pull the hull back into shape by fitting the knees at the top edge first, then closing the gap. Did it make the difference you were hoping for?
Yes your hard work on the sole shows and is needed for work around. For safety for sure. I'm impressed with all the team work and the way you both problem solving on issues.
As far as your painting goes - Simon is always striving for perfection,, one of my traits, but at 66 I've learnt that it holds you back from acheaving. The Royal Navy would say, "paint it, but don't fill the holes", it's a happy medium while maintaining maximum protection. Think about it, you'll do the right thing. 👍👍
Yes on the shop build videos! Always enjoy the two of you working together. Also interested is some of the choices you’ll be making for the shop and how it will help on restoration work of Sarinda. “Ship Happens - The Shop Build” coming soon…we viewers hope.
I love your videos. Two comments: I'd like to see your garage build in segments rather than one long video. Two - Just paint the wall in semi gloss or satin. The way it is gives character to the boat.
I always enjoy your episodes! Your restoring/rebuilding a BIG boat so there is a lot of reputation, just keep doing what your doing, and us die-hards will keep watching! I do enjoy when you finish a milestone and can move on to a new area. I feel the transom will be a major milestone and a huge challenge, not sure why, but that is my gut feeling. As for your home shop build, I would love to see it, could be a snippet in your weekly Ship Happens or some longer episodes within your Ship Happens Adventures channel. Keep up the great work!
“Form” always follows function! Make Sarina structurally functional first, THEN make her beautiful. I so much enjoy watching your channel, I was NAVY and worked on an old yard boat very similar to Sarinda at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, in the early 1980’s, so many memories! Thanks, in so many ways!
Fabulous episode of Ship Happens, starting with the beautiful drone footage at the beginning. Welcome back, Gemma! So nice to see you again. Si held down the fort admirably in your absence, but it's nice to have the R-team back together. In answer to your question: The more Gemma and Simon I have during my week the better, so I think it would be terrific to have regular (mid-week) updates of your workshop build. I also had an idea for a (permanent) wall within Sarinda: how about a mural depicting key aspects of Sarinda''s history? Not sure if you will have some wall space to do it, but if you do, it will be a lovely feature.
More of us are likely to build a new shop than restore a big boat so you get even more subs and we get taught how to avoid catastrophes in our build. Win - win! And we love watching you guys do anything so more episodes rather than less. 😊
Sarinda has come so far since you guys bought her! I can see how proud you guys are of her! 72 feet worth of boat is a huge project. You're doing it the right way. Structure first. Watching you guys go from compartment to compartment. Seeing unique problems come up. Then applying your cool solutions is the content😊. You guys are very talented with your woodworking skills! Kudos guys!
Hello, I have been watching from the start, you guys are amazing, watching the challenges, and processes invented to solve for the problems is really cool. Wax paper is great for keeping tools from getting glued/painted. Keep it up! Cheers from California!
Personally I think you have the right balance. Why do we watch? Well its all about you guys, funny entertaining and relentless enthusiasm. Yes there are jobs we have seen before but there is always something new and the entertainment value from you is immense. Just keep going the way you are.
I love the project, even though I think you are both certifiably mental for taking it on. I really enjoy the vlog, endlessly interesting, educational and fun
Watching the shed build would be great. I do think your second channel would be the best place. I just wonder where the two of you get the time and energy! Thanks for the great content!!
I'd love to see the shed build on a weekly midweek basis please. Oh, another interesting video, really good. Looking forward to seeing more. xx Dave Swain and family ❤
If you both are involved in building the new shop, I want to see it done even if in spurts and pieces. So enjoyed the opening shots of Simon working on the deck. Ya’ll do so well in editing your working shots between you both which makes it more entertaining to watch. This is a great channel.
Thank you very much for another great video! My two cents on the shed build is there no need for a full build vlog, but an update here and there would be nice. Enough work with the regular content imho. 🙂
It usually takes me a generous glass of Shiraz to get through one of your eye watering episodes. I know how much work goes into the videos, so personally I’d say keep focused on the boat with the odd cameo for the shed. Well done guys! Cheers Chris.
I think Simons idea has merit to just make something done and finished, so you never have to touch it again. And making something pretty just warms something in your heart.. Even if you intend to cover it in shelves.
It keeps amazing me you 2 have so much fun when working together. It gives the feeling of a well oiled machine taking on any task at hand. Simon alone is great, but when you 2 are together its so much more fun. It doesn't amaze me anymore how the work is progressing, when I started following the channel I sometimes thought this is a never ending story, but you keep progressing so good. 5 years in working order, easy peasy ;-)
If it's not structural, the filling holes in the utility room to paint t it can definitely wait until you know what the walls are needed for! Regarding the shed build, yes, a summary episode of how the new workshop is built would be great - perhaps even more useful for those of us without boats 😉
I applaud Simon wanting to tidy up all the holes and cracks etc., but they are also the stories and the history of Sarinda. I think you should concentrate and carry on with restoring her and leave the finer finishing once she is seaworthy again. As usual it is great to see you both reason it out with each other and in the end you will always prevail to get Sarinda further fitted for another sailing. Great work as always and thanks for explaining for us as we cannot be there to see for ourselves. Cheers from BC in Canada
Any video you two do will always be entertaining and the more variety, the better so bring on the shed build. I'm with you on Narinda's resto needing to be logical. Priority on the hull, then the deck then I would investigate her bottom. A bit hard when she's sitting in the mud but must be done at some stage. I wouldn't even worry about doing anything to the interior until the exterior is watertight, strong and comlete. Then, draw up a floorplan and stick to it. This will let you know what to keep and repair, what to rip out and what to build new, easy ha ha.
Jeez Guys....I have said it before, and I will say it again - Maximum respect to you both....every time you start on a new area, you find more rot and crumbling timber. Its the sheer scale of the task which astounds me. I know I wouldn't have the patience, you just keep going and never give-up. I would have thrown in the towel long ago, and you haven even seen the hull in a dry dock yet....I really hope that part of the boat will broadly be sound. Conserved by the mud! Bravo Guys!
Keep going you’re doing well, it’s what makes a difference between a job that gets done and how many jobs do you see hanging round that people will never get to finish. Good on you. Keep going Michael from Hampshire
Saying hi from Cape Town South Africa - I can't wait till the day all the restorative work is done and that hull looks brand new. That's gonna be epic. Love the build and look forward to seeing how you build the shed. One can always learn new things from anyone building something. Cheers guys.
I started watching this project almost right away. I remember at the time you said you were expecting it to take up to 10 years to rebuild. So, to hear you now say it has to be done in 5 years from now is crazy, its hard to believe that you'realready starting year 4 of the rebuild! I've loved every minute of it, and watching the next episode is something I look forward to every week! And, YES, would love to see the new shop build, in whatever format works best for you two.
Definitely guys, I for one would love to see your workshop build. Personally I’d love to see it in one big video. Then get back on to Sarinda and finish it!!! Love you’re videos, they make my Friday nights perfect 👍👍❤️❤️🇮🇪🇮🇪

Simon, My Grandfather used to say, "Sometimes perfection gets in the way of 'good enough'". Make it strong, THEN come back and worry about pretty.
Excellent video! I am all for regular updates on the shop build. I love watching you two work together.
Gemma, I’ve really started to notice that the top of Simon’s head is weathered and showing signs of rot! I think it’s ’Paint your bloke time!’. 😂😂😂
Definite yes on the workshop. Definite no on wasting time filling the holes in the boards. It would be much easier to put up a very thin plywood, or the thin shiny stuff they put in bathrooms it's easy to wash off.

Weighing into the sanding holes debate - I think those bulkheads look amazing because of the way they’re aged. Filling them makes them less beautiful! :)
Absolutely right.
Definitely! Just clean then paint to preserve the lovely character of the planks and nails.
Love watching Simons face as he’s watching Gemma ranting about hole filling and cleaning…………….it was brilliant
😂😂
Long suffering spouse. Goes both ways.....
Simon your work will be faster by using a set of drill bits, like a set of sockets, you can find the correct one immediately. So when one is broken replace it and keep the set complete, or like me when I leave a socket in the engine I buy another.

This isn't about the work. It's about the journey.
I would like to see the workshop built because I love Simon's explanations of the "why".
WE WILL WATCH, DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO ❤
Absolutely I think everyone would love to see the construction of your new workshop 😀
Structure first, decorate later. (and yes please to the shop build... Cheers)
Yes definitely film the workshop build 👍
Love to see the shop build video weekly, always look forward to seeing all the videos you do.🙂
Yes, we would love to see the shed built in increments while taping. We love you guys!
Really excited to see the start of the forward rooms! 👍👍
Thank you for the Mental Health help info pinned in the video description - we have a long way to normalizing mental health and I appreciate your sincere efforts. Best to you, your family, and the lovely Sarinda.

Glad to see you back Gemma. You're both enjoyable to watch by yourselves, but you're a team and it's just not the same. :)
😊 thank you
I look forward to seeing everything you do, no matter what it is you are doing. I love what you do. 😂
I love watching builds. that is why I watch channels like yours. Feel free to post videos about your workshop. I'll watch them.
Another excellent episode! Thanks Gemma and Simon. One thing you didn't mention was how successful was the attempt to pull the hull back into shape by fitting the knees at the top edge first, then closing the gap. Did it make the difference you were hoping for?
Looking forward to the worshop build, I think either channel is fine. Excellent work ya'll.
Yep I too would love to see the shed build 😊
Love to see your new shop as it happens. I like to see the reality of the effort that goes in to a project like yours.
Yes your hard work on the sole shows and is needed for work around. For safety for sure. I'm impressed with all the team work and the way you both problem solving on issues.

YES PLEASE!!!! The whole thing I don’t want to miss a minute! I cannot get enough of the Gemma and Simon show lol❤❤❤
I agree, a series of 20 to 30 minute videos of the shed build would be great!
I love your videos. Two comments: I'd like to see your garage build in segments rather than one long video. Two - Just paint the wall in semi gloss or satin. The way it is gives character to the boat.

Love to see the shed build. Just tack it onto this channel. Use a Formica type panel on the walls. Very easy to clean.
The more videos the better! You guys are great and I enjoy watching all of your projects.
Thanks so much!
“Form” always follows function! Make Sarina structurally functional first, THEN make her beautiful. It would be great to see a video of the workshop build , you are both doing such a great job on Sarinda
yes to the build of the shed. Do it as progress reports :-) And I am with Simon, what would the original craftsman do, fill the cracks and the holes.
You are killing it Simon keep up the great work. Gemma you are a great support of the dream.
“Whats that in american? 140 inches. Means nothing to me!”
Spot on. 😂
Deffo want to see the workshop build happy to watch it however you want to post it
Build it and they will come
Great video as ever 👍 would love to see the build of your workshed, weekly updates would be great 👍👍

love to see new workshop build keep doing what you do, you guys are amazing
Hello,
I have been watching from the start, you guys are amazing, watching the challenges, and processes invented to solve for the problems is really cool. Wax paper is great for keeping tools from getting glued/painted.
Keep it up!
Cheers from California!
I'd watch your new shop being built. I like the way you two compliment each other working.
Personally I think you have the right balance. Why do we watch? Well its all about you guys, funny entertaining and relentless enthusiasm. Yes there are jobs we have seen before but there is always something new and the entertainment value from you is immense. Just keep going the way you are.
Yes on the shop build. I enjoy all your content, the way you both work together is amazing.
Thanks for all of your uploads.
Awesome, thank you!
Leave the holes and cracks, it shows the character of the boat.
Do not fill small holes and other injuries, it is the ship's soul that it shows!
Yes, midweek sounds good.
vids of the workshop build each week sounds good folks
I’m reminded of the “Goofy Gophers”. Two people enjoying themselves in the middle of chaos. 😎👍
I’d love to see you both build your new workshop.
It usually takes me a generous glass of Shiraz to get through one of your eye watering episodes. I know how much work goes into the videos, so personally I’d say keep focused on the boat with the odd cameo for the shed. Well done guys! Cheers Chris.
Course we want to see the build. :-)
I think Simons idea has merit to just make something done and finished, so you never have to touch it again. And making something pretty just warms something in your heart.. Even if you intend to cover it in shelves.
Just proper lol'd at the smiley on Simon’s bean 😂
One legged table...like a dart. Simon you are a funny dude!
I would love to see the entire shed/shop build in multiple videos
Prioritizing Sarinda is what makes the best content! Oh, and whatever Gemma says is probably the right answer.
What an undertaking! You guys are so dedicated to this project. Awesome seeing the working being done. 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻
5 years in working order, easy peasy ;-)
yes to the workshop build
Shop build in bits and pieces!
Ad to watch the smiley face for the second time. All this time and still having fun. Thanks for sharing those silly moments.
Periodic videos on your home shop build would be nice. (FY: 144 inches = exactly 12 feet so 141" =11foot 9 inches)
I'd be happy to watch you build the shed, and I'll settle for however you want to show us.
Yes I would very much like to follow the building and work at the shop
Yes to shed video, do two one building it and the second fitting it out
Break the build up into different videos, not a single long one! All the videos you guys posts are awesome!
I think it would be brilliant to watch the build of the new work shop as it is being built but that's just what I think the more video the merrier
you keep doing your thing its brilliant to see a team working together to achieve their goals

Nothing like wasting time talking about the job you thinks going to waste time you two crack me up
🤣👍
Shed build in small chunks whenever any decent progress has been made
Definitely guys, I for one would love to see your workshop build. Personally I’d love to see it in one big video. Then get back on to Sarinda and finish it!!!
Love you’re videos, they make my Friday nights perfect 👍👍❤️❤️🇮🇪🇮🇪
