- I had to get started on the speed run cars because if I did not, I would drag my feet and miss out. I got the MF-01X chassis build and got the Buyee DT-02 buggy ready for a test run.

With all these Beetle MF01X hitting the road for speed challenges, makes our little Tour Guide seem quite pedestrian!
Yours is and will remain way classier though! The crude and rude speed demons will all be scarred and damaged in the end and you tour guide will still be in great shape and ready for more adventures!

Thanks! The DT02 has me worried a little as it may be a little wheelie prone and could be a real handful trying to take off with it. The MF01 I think may be a twitchy little thing but we will see. I hope to get the DT02 out this weekend and get some runs in with it. Once I peak with it then i will swap out the motor and ESC into the MF01 and see what happens! It will be fun and exciting regardless what the end result is. I just hope they com home in one piece!
Nice Addam, Looks great let the fun begin .. I'm on the fence to on Brushed vs Brushless. I have a lot of brushless motors but its gunna get crazy.. Green Machine is sweet.. Can't wait to see that too... Awesome.
Yeah, I am not sure which way I am going to go, more than likely the brushless but we will see how the green machine goes and take it from there! If that goes plenty fast then I will probably swap out the motor from it and send the MF-01X on it!

I forgot to mention that you should use heavy grease or lock up your front diff. When going fast, you want a solid, or near solid, axle pulling it so it goes straighter.
Ok, so swap the front for the rear diff! Gotcha!

I have one of those with the Ford Escort body. Neat little car, steering vary sensitive. Yep oil shocks a must. Can't wait till you run it.
I was on the fence with this and the Escort. both a cool looking! I am sure it is going to be a handful trying to make it go fast. I will get the DT02 run done and then probably swap the motor from it into this and see how it goes
Hi Addam, I never thought about all those dealers wondering why all the MF01X kits were flying off the shelves! Man, you got that chassis done fast! And that DT02 should fly with that motor in it and the huge wheels! Good luck with both cars dude! 🙏🏁😎👍

I think the DT02 is going to be a real handful but should get going as long as it does not get airborne! Once I have made my run with it then the motor and ESC will go into the MF01 and see what happens there. I know that one is going to be touchy and squirrely to drive! Have you been able to make any headway into the issues with your DT02 at all?? I am hoping to see that thing get into the 50s soon!
@@AddamsPlayground Good plan with the motor swap, Addam! As for my DT02, I am seriously limited by my motors, I've looked but can't find anything faster and available in the UK. I think the vintage motors are always going to win, but I can't afford the kind of money people are asking for them! Never mind, it's fun to be a part of all the same! Cheers!
@@MarkBryanRC Yes, vintage motors may as well be made of platinum these days! If it is worth buying you cannot afford it! I cannot justify buying a motor I could buy a car for! The only reason I got this 65ookv motor is that it was only $38!!

I am still thinking about what i want to do for the paint job on the beetle. I don't mind the orange but I feel like it could be fun in other colors. I may try find another body for it just for the speed run though. Time may not be in my favor though to find one that will fit. I will try and do something fun for one of them!

I am a sucker for a old bug! I am hoping I don't need the parts but wanted them here just in case! LOL! An M03 with a mini body is a terrific combo and the little M series cars are a blast to drive!

It should be interesting for sure. These are going to be a handful once we can get them going fast! It will be a blast win or loose it will be fun seeing them ripping around. I am sure there will be some epic crashing as well!

With the damper up grade I do Amazon, got me a set for $19 when they got here I did surgery on them you know changed out the oil and what not, they work superb. Fun little kit !!!!

I have had mixed results with stuff like that from Amazon. So are very good and others are pretty awful at best! I typically find a deal on the Tamiya dampers and buy 4 or 5 sets and have them on hand for things like this. They can be pricey t times but I think I got the full set of the mini CVAs for $16 each, so I bought 4 sets as I know I will use them on future builds. It is verging on insanity with the amount of parts both new and barely used sitting around here....
That’s a great looking beetle rally car. I hope it won’t get too roughed up doing the speed run challenge. That DT02 looks like it means business with those huge rear slicks and monster brushless power installed. All the best and have fun! 👍😊
I am debating on trying to source a different body for the Beetle and once done with the speed runs I can rebuild it to the rally ride height and toss a pristine body on it. Not sure if I will have the time to track something down. The DT02 worries me, I think it is going to be a bit too rowdy and just want to flip over or take off! LOL! We will see this weekend. I hope to get it out for some runs then!
Nice build. From what I watched, you may need to upgrade the servo saver. The DT02 looks great 😮 Keeping front wheels on the ground is a big challenge (if only it had a slipper clutch) Good luck with the speed runs 👍🤝
I have seen a few people say it was really sloppy but mine does not feel loose or wobbly like other have said. I will try it and I have a couple of the large Kimbrough servo savers here I can use in its place. I am sure both are going to be handfuls to drive but yes, I am a little worried about the DT02 wanting to pull the front end up and take flight mid run but hopefully the few ounces of weight up front will help keep it planted. I may try and come up with a small wing for the front end as well just in case it is needed! LOL!
@AddamsPlayground Well, following on this, while static, there's a lot of play; stilI I made some small runs, and it's not bad. It was only at 34 mph and without body. I cannot confirm the stability at 50+ with a Beetle 😉
@@coygtrc From my previous experience with these speed runs once they go over 45 they get very sketchy feeling! It is part of the fun really, that nervous feeling every time you hear it start to wind up in the run of what is going to happen! LOL! 34 i not bad at all for some shakedown runs!
Nice Addam I have had mine for awhile good little car built mine probably 4 years ago I'm doing unlimited class I don't plan in winning but most options for custom fun
It should be fun and I look forward to seeing what everyone does with theirs. I am throwing the fastest motor I got and maybe gearing if possible and calling it good. Greatstuff, buddy! Looking forward to follow your progress on these, and of course I am looking forward to get into it myself... I got one run in on the DT-02 challenge, but I think I need to improve performance, so let's see about that... I think on MF-01X, I'll just do a single run, see how I do, keep it pretty minimal, mostly just have a bit of fun with it, no speed barriers at risk of being broken by me... I counted yesterday, I got 4 RC challenges going at the moment, it's a bit much, ha ha!

I can't keep up with the big time speed freaks but I will get it what I got!!! I am sure both are going to be a handful to drive in their own way. The DT02 may take flight mid run and the MF01X is just going to be squirrely so it should be interesting! $ different challenges!?! I cannot fathom that much tinkering at the moment! Thanks Pete! I will get the DT02 out first and once that is done more than likely the motor and ESC are coming out of it and going into the MF01. It should be interesting driving either one of them!!
Forgive this question is front wheel drive only allowed in the comp I've never built a speed run car but when I bought the losi Chevy C10 4wd street car and the stub axle broke I tinkerd around with removing the other side rear wheel drive was painful to handle front wheel drive only was an unbelievable difference for controllability in a straight line surface could play a factor I'm not aware of aswell, but I always wondered why no one built front wheel drive speed run cars ...... good luck though 💪👊
No worries Mark. These are actually a 4wd chassis. You have to run the MF01X chassis for Poor Boys RC challenge and a DT02 (RWD) buggy for the CW01 Creations challenge. By removing the front or rear axles you can make effectively make it either FWD or RWD. I do not think there was any ruling that it had to remain 4WD for the speed runs so if it gets down to a need for another 1 or 2 MPH taking the gearing and axles from the front end may be the boost needed to goa bit faster. It would make it harder to control but freeing up the power loss from being 4WD might get you an extra MPH or two!

It is definitely going to be interesting. From previous ones they are fun up to about 45-50mph and then they get really sketchy and nerve wracking! For the DT02 I am going straight to sketchy with it! Fingers crossed! LOL!

I enjoyed sitting down and building it. both as it is a nice kit and it has been weeks since I really have done much down there! It should be interesting seeing what people come up with to get these going fast, it always surprises me how fast some folks can get things going!!
O my speed runs with that MF 01X chassis that's going to be hairy! I have one with the stock motor I think the one you shown and it's pretty crazy I can't imagine controlling it with a fast as heck motor! Yikes have fun! At least with the bug body it may just keep rolling over and over when you do flip.
I think both of them are going to be a handful out running them! It should be fun and the DT02 will go out first so I can get that wrapped up and then steal the motor and ESC from it to run the MF01X with it. Both are going to be nerve wracking I am sure! LOL!

It goes together pretty well with no issues. Closing up the gearboxes may take a bit of wiggling and patience but other than that it all went together great. The Sand Viper I hope only figuratively flies, I am a little worried it may actually get airborne but we will see what happens! LOL! Bothe are going to be exciting for sure!

It should be fun. I did take out the DT02 on Sunday and got some test runs in on it. More figuring out what not to do with it really, it was a little messy LOL! That will be tomorrow's video!

I was working on it some earlier this afternoon for a few and got the motor installed and fired it up for the first time. I think it is going to be fast!!! Scary on the bench for sure! LOL! I think you have until the 15th to decide which class you are entering in and then it officially begins, even though folks are already running them. Double check zee rulez on Fil's video though! The chassis builds pretty quickly.

We reckon the Beetle body is way too nice to scratch up but I guess it's for a great challenge lol. The buggy already looks killer with the big wheels too👌. We can't believe you got the chassis built so fast, well done Addam. It should be good with the stiffer rear diff.

Hey there my favorite Aussies! It should be interesting and fun to see them out flying around, figuratively I hope.. I don't want to see either airborne! I am debating on trying to find another body for the speed run and then do the beetle body later and keep it all nice and clean. I am sure it is going to take a tumble but it may be hard to find a body to fit the wheelbase. These are shorter that a normal touring car shell so options are a bit more limited! The DT02 will get out first and once I am done with it then the motor and ESC will get swapped over to the MF01. Take care you guys and have a wonderful rest of the week!

We love the rally beetle but didn't realise the chassis was so short, I wonder if an eBay VW Beetle polycarbonate body would fit?.

Awesome. I’m still acquiring parts for the build. I’ll be in the brushed category with my typical emphasis on it looking good. Might add lights but nothing like last year.
Go fast or look fast, it will still be fun! I am probably going to end up going brushless once I have run the DT02 I can yank the motor and ESC from it and see what it will do for the MF01. Have fun with and best of luck!

Thanks Pete! The DT02 Dragster has potential. If I can keep it rubber side down it should scoot. I have no idea how the MF01 is going to do but it will get the motor and ESC from the DT02 once it is done with them. It should be fun win or lose.
I wanted mine to be Class 11 Baja, so I removed the rear drive shaft pinion and removed the front dogbones. Now she’s 2 wheel drive and quick
hhhrrrmmm... I did not think of trying to run it as a 2wd. It would make it very squirrely to get going but would probably give it a few more mph. I'll get the DT02 done first and then probably swap the motor from it into the MF01. if needed I will try the 2wd option and see if that gives it any more top speed!

Terrific! Mine is set up for max ground clearance ( because rally). However, I feel that your grease tactic is a great idea. I am not a speed run person per se, but in terms of squeezing max diff performance out of a tamiya, I think this should go well. Looking forward to your entry! Cheers
I like that this one is pretty easy to swap the ground clearance on them. Not that you would ant to do it often but it seems pretty quick to go from the high to low settings. I am 110% guessing on the setup but hoping it works out. I will get the DT02 run this weekend and then swap the motor and electrics into the MF01X once that is done and see how it reacts to all that power! I am sure it is going to be a handful!! LOL!! These should be fun. The MF01X looks a lot like the old TL01 shrunken to M chassis size.
Very much so, it is kind of a modular TL01. The main difference in the TL01 the motor is in front of the rear wheels and in this it is behind them. but overall basically a modular version of it!
Nice chassis, I did the Ford Escort a while back when it came out as it was my first real car, and the same damper upgrade, great cheap upgrade.
Yes, the mini CVAs are great and inexpensive little shocks. I was on the fence to get the Escort or the Beetle but I have had the Beetle on my list of kits to get for a while not so I felt like I needed to get that one first.
@@AddamsPlayground The beetle is cool too, I had one of those as a real car too. The escort is a proper rally car though so really suits the chassis. I did a quick video on the damper upgrade recently.
I'm in the middle of moving, so I have to bow out of the speed runs this year. I would have liked to run my Sand Viper, but oh well. Good luck, Addam!
Moving is such a pain, I do not blame you at all! I have already made up my mind that if we have to move for any reason at all I am not touching a thing except my collection and the moving company is doing all that work! I have retired from moving heavy boxes and furniture!! I hope it all goes well and smoothly and you get settled into the new place and back to tinkering!

There is still plenty of time and it is always fun! No matter where you end up it is a good time and fun to see the insane speeds some folks can squeeze out of a Tamiya that was neve intended to go fast! The shirt I got from the Redbubble website. Got to Redbubble and search for "Nostalgia RC" and he has a ton of great RC related shirts on there. If you sign up for their newsletter they run sales on stuff all the time to save you some money!

That is a pretty cool idea for the Beetle! The Viper is probably going to be a handful, I am sticking the wheelie bar on it before the run to try and keep it from flipping backwards on itself! Both should be fun and I will get out this weekend with the DT02 and get a few runs in. I would love to land in the top 3! Take care Peter and have a great weekend!
WOW!!!!!!!! Two speed challenges, either way I know that you are going to have a blast. I'm pretty sure the MF-01X is going to look awesome and it will be uncontrollable 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Are you using the stock tires? The DT-02 challenge that Viper is going to fly, good thing you abbed weights to keep the front end down. Yeah, it is going to be a bit nutty with both of them. I ran the DT02 on Sunday and that video will up soon. It ended up being a learning, shakedown run and I have to tweak a few things. I won't spoil anything but there was a few bloopers in there! LOL! For the MF01X I will be using some foam touring car tires for it. The stock one would probably be a sketchy handful to control! The foams should give it a good footing, the rest of the chassis is to be determined how it is going to react! LOL! Looks great Addam... I will not not be doing the MF01X runs an I don't have a kit.. As for the DT-02, All I'm using is a 19 tooth pinion and I hey 57 Mph with a 6900kv motor with a 2S, the limit on the battery size. Brother, I can't wait to see your speed runs.....

I knew I was going to have to get a fast motor in there and more than likely will drill out the gear case and stick the 22t pinion in there just cause I think it is going to be my only hope of passing you unless I got the hottest 6500kv motor Spektrum made LOL!! I am sure both are going to be a handful!
@@AddamsPlayground Glenn over at RC Mad UK hit 56 Mph with a 5900kv motor... I guess I need more room to wind this out... Good luck dude and to find a very long road.. Also, here's a tip I figured out, stand in the middle of your run area, so the car has equal room to your left as it does your right, as much as you can... I seen others do it but it hit me to do it that way on my last run... LOL

I previously didn't know anything about this platform..... but it's certainly an interesting piece of design.
Dare I say that it doesn't look the strongest of chassis..... I certainly don't think it will take the levels of high speed abuse as well as the TTO2 or CWO1 platforms did in previous years.
I think we are going to see some serious carnage this year!
We are still looking out for a second hand donor car to be sacrificed as Taylor has come up with this crazy idea of using rocket propulsion instead of motors! 🚀😱🙄🤷♂️

It is an interesting design for a chassis. It is kind of like a modular TL01, kind of. It should be interesting to see what it feels like once it gets up to speed. I am going to strip the motor and esc from the DT02 once I have run that and see what it will do. From there I am not sure. I don't think I will be going to rocket powered route though! If you can find a junker kit to do it with and find somewhere safe to run it then I would love to see it! LOL! I have nowhere near me that I think I could get away with that!

I do all our RC mechanics /repairs/builds etc usually, but Taylors the explosives/pyro expert.
I just need to get us a rolling chassis /body and it's up to him from there on! 🙄
I've no idea where he is planning on doing this, and I'm pretty sure it's going to end in disaster to be honest..... but it should at the very least make an entertaining video or two! 😂

@@AddamsPlayground I've been so tempted to make a run at the dt02 speedrun. I comes at a cost to time with my kids. To me , thats the highest price of all. They already rolled their eyes at the poorboys run. I promise only once a year. At least with the back yard track they roast marshmallows with me.

Thank, same to you with the MF01. If I had a brushed setup worth of running I would probably stick with that. I know I am fighting a loosing battle in the brushless but it is just for fun and the experience of nervously driving way too fast with it! LOL! The sales charts for these is going to have a huge spike it for sure! LOL!

I am pretty sure I will go brushless and just pull the motor and ESC from the DT02 once I have run that and see what it will do. I am waiting for a different body to show up as I do not want to trash the beetle body running that in the speed runs!

Should be crazy! the viper that pinion change wont do to much those big wheels and tires you have make way more of a gearing change it should go much faster with those suckers on it!
Yeah, I know the few teeth on the pinion is not going to go but so far. The beefy rear tires should get it cooking though! It worked on the Lunch Box so hopefully it works well on here. One of the tires has chunk out of the side wall from the last wreck of the Lunchie run.

It is good to be back! I am hoping the huge tires will hook up well and get it going fast! I will get it out soon I hope, depend on the thunderstorms and how fast I get this remodel wrapped up. Almost to the end but still got some work left to do.

@@nomusicrc We have been getting rounds of thunderstorms a lot lately. With it being so hot they spring up right often. I think mostly when it rains I am not trying to do anything else and have time to do RC stuff so things like painting and running are often hampered by the rain just because it works out I have time to tinker but I am limited to what I can do.
Hey Addam the MF-01X challenge seems pretty tight in terms of the rules & regulations, I’ve a couple of MF-01x chassis, so might take a look at the brushed categories. Similarly, I have a DT-02 Holiday Buggy, but mines a pretty boy and I don’t want to scratch it up, or make it a Frankenstein 😂😂, but I’m contemplating entry to both, even if it’s to see how fast mine go in stock and for just the comradeship 😊😊best wishes to you and the family 😊😊
I have no chance of winning either, it is all just for fun and to see where you end up on the boards! I completely understand not wanting to trash it going to fast, I am trying to figure out what I want to do for the body on mine. Risk it stock or try and find a sacrificial body and finish the beetle off after the runs. Finding something for the shorter wheelbase is not super easy from what I have seen so far! Hop into the comp and just have fun with it.
@@AddamsPlayground hey Addam, it’s funny you said that about the shorter wheelbase MF-01X, because I’ve built both the long and short wheel base of the chassis, I was going to see if the short wheelbase one is quicker than the long wheelbase version. I had to mod the central prop shaft, as trying to get a short prop shaft in the Uk was impossible. So I purchased a long one, cut it down, drilled for the pin and installed it in the car, seems to work well 🤔🙏🤔best wishes to you all 😎🖐️

I really don't have a part number as they come from various vendors on eBay. If you search for "SR3100 receiver" on eBay or Amazon you will find loads of them. Amazon is quick but you pay for the speed of them being in stock here. I usually can get them for $13-15 each shipped from China and often times you can look for bulk discounts to lower the price to that $13 area if you order 4 or more. I usually order 5 or 6 at a time and they generally take 2-4 weeks to get here. I have ordered a bunch, grey ones, black ones, orange ones... they all work just as well for me. Happy hunting!
I woukd love to join but I just spent and ton of cash in Japan. Now back at work then nextbweek is holidays. Then back to finish up this job before more holidys and start a new job in September so August is a busy month.

A little Herbie action? If I had the decals here I probably would. I am not sure what it is going to look like or if I will even run it with this body on it. I may see about getting a smaller, sleeker car body if I can find something quick with the proper wheelbase. The DT02 has to go out first so I can use the motor and esc from it for the MF01.

When I built this I got the " yeah racing" wide stance set up. It makes a big difference in the car. Thoughts ?
I have not looked too much into the hop-ups for it yet. It is not a bad idea at all, the longer and wider it can be the more stable it should be. Thanks for the idea.

It should be interesting running both of these! more than likely once I run the DT02 I will swap that motor and esc into the MF01 and see what happens! both are going to be a handful to drive! Brice is on another level with the ideas and abilities he has, I am glad there is an unlimited class for him to play in! LOL!

The brushed class looks like its going to be mad. Loads of people will be in that one. I do not have any brushless equipment so its definitely brushed for me.
The tyre max for the MF01X is 65mm diameter, so basically touring car wheels/tyres.
Its great to actually be taking part this year 😊

Hey Glenn! More than likely I be in brushed and swap the motor from the DT02 into this one once I have run that one. I really don't have any super low turn brushed motors so I will probably be fighting it out with the speed demons in the brushless category! LOL!
I went and looking it up and saw the 65mm but wrote 64mm for some reason.
It should be fun and interesting trying to get these both up to speed and I am just hopeful they come home in once piece! I know both are going to be a handful!!

Yeah, more than likely it is going to get the motor and ESC from the DT02 after the runs with it. I really don't have a super hot brushed motor or an ESC powerful enough in brushed mode to be competitive there. I know I am not going to win, too many speed demon guys out there but it will be fun seeing what they will do with what I have got!
Oh yeah, it will get some foam touring cars tires on it! the little ones are just temporary.
@AddamsPlayground I took mine out for a run at lunch time with a 2s pack (it has a 3s capable esc) and that was spicy enough. The body is already wrecked and I haven't even painted it yet. 🫣
