  • In this program Andrew Looks at a new product being manufactured in Tasmania - hardwood cross laminated timber (CLT).
    The plantation eucalypts that provide the timber were originally planted for wood chips, so using them for a higher value purpose benefits the whole supply chain.

    I work in a CLT factory in Spokane, Washington. We primarily use spruce-pine-fir for our 12’x60’ panels. But, we just started making CLT out of %100 Doug fir or southern yellow pine. Although I’ve always wondered what CLT would be like made out of hardwood

    Very interesting. I work a lot with CLT (Denmark, Europe) and I believe it is the future construction material - already today. And it is very nice to see that Australia is catching up and doing something very good with their hardwood plantations. It is good that you show the World, that it is possible to make CLT from hardwood. Personally I would love CLT based on bamboo, since bamboo is a very very sustainable fastgrowing plant.

      Hejsa, bliver der bygget 1 familiehuse med clt i dk? Hvordan er prisen i forhold det gammeldags parcel hus?

    • @Corewood_TJP
      @Corewood_TJP Год назад

      @@17art3an Ja, det gør der. Prisniveauet er nogenlunde den samme samlet set, uanset hvordan man bygger. Og man skal forvente at det idag koster 18-20.000 kr/m2 at bygge nyt hus. I nogle tilfælde kan det måske være billigere med CLT (eller burde være det samlet set), men med diverse plusser og minusser, går det måske nogenlunde op alligevel. Det bør man i hvert fald forvente, så man ikke får en (dårlig) overraskelse og sådan at der er en chance for at man får en god overraskelse.

      @@Corewood_TJP det lyder egentlig meget godt. Hvad er så de knap så gode sider med CLT?
      Hvordan er varme retning i forhold til nyeste standarder?

      @@17art3an Basalt set er der vel ikke nogen større ulemper ved CLT - primært en række fordele. Men hvis man alligevel skal fremhæve noget: Træ er et naturligt materiale, så man skal være forberedt på at der kan komme revner og sprækker i væggene. Dette er primært relevant, hvis man ønsker CLT'en som synlig overflade, f.eks. behandlet med gennemsigtig maling el.lign. Hvis man ønsker at beklæde CLT'en (i den billigere ikke-synlige kvalitet) med gips og spartle og male (hvilket er dyrere end den synlige kvalitet CLT) - det kan man godt, men så giver det måske ikke helt så meget mening at bruge CLT, andet end hvis det er fordi man gerne vil have det gedigne byggemateriale (den massive trævæg) og den hurtige montagetid. Derudover skal man være opmærksom på at et CLT hus skal gennemprojekteres, før man "trykker på knappen", fordi det giver mest mening at udføre så mange som muligt (alle) udsparinger til bl.a. installationer ab fabrik.

    Brilliant way forward, particularly in new residential builds 👏👏

    in reality, the use of hardwood as CLT is quite challenging. I am a forest products student who is currently working on a final project related to the CLT with combination of Acacia mangium and Schima wallichii using polyurethane adhesive.
    The problem I'm experiencing is that the dimensional stability of the hardwood is low enough that its strength in long-term use will also be affected.
    It is strongly recommended to use the best coating material for CLT hardwoods applications. But if CLT from hardwood is developed properly in the future, it will produce products with good quality and can also be widely available due to the high production of hardwood.
    Very interesting.

    Well done chaps!! Chipping 3,000,000 cubic meters of our hardwood & LOOSE money to do that is THE most stupid waste of our wealth and resources. I lived in Tas for 4 years and every day massive logs from old growth virgin forests tore down the high way to the mills for wood chipping. Utterly insane. So glad to see CLT taking over. 25% of tiny Austria's industry is timber based, and they increase their forest cover every year. ie its brilliantly managed. Australia by contrast looses forest cover every year. It's a global deforestation hotspot thanks to decades of political corruption and ineptitude. Massive private and govt investment in CLT construction for domestic and export markets will pay huge dividends for generations.
