  • I'm a bit late to this, but today I'm reacting to Foo Fighters new song called The Teacher. It came out 2 weeks ago and it's an epic 10 minute long song and video. This Foo Fighters song seems to be really taking off with folks, so let's have a listen and a watch to see what's going on. Do you like it? Tell me in the comments

For anyone that hasn't read Dave's memoir, this song really hits you hard if you have. There's a section where Dave talks about how fearful he was to approach his mother, the school teacher that he wished to drop out of school and shoot for his dream in playing music for a living. As anyone would have been, he goes on to say how shocked he was at the support he received. Go for your dreams! There's an awful lot of people out there that can only wish to have that kind of relationship with their mother.
Hey kid, what's plan for tomorrow - where will I wake up...? 🎸

Inspired by the grief of losing his mother the teacher may ultimately be Death. Death brings us to grief which is expressed gratitude for that we have lost. The yin and yang with out the absence of joy would we ever truly acknowledged Joys existence ? Unfortunately all to often we don't recognize it in the moment until the light is extiguished. Love the ones you love ferociously, now. Love the breath you have that allows you to do so, now (breathe), now, (breathe) and now. This song is a gift.

They really did knock it out of the park, such a solid album from start to finish and incredibly moving. Even Anthony Fantano (theneedledrop) gave it a ton of praise. It's uncomfortable and comforting at the same time. I feel such tremendous sadness for his loss. It's the strangest feeling for someone you admire and love from afar. For his strength and what incredible friendship he has shown, to each and every one of us in some way- those of us who are true fans and don't come on mediums to bag him out for vaccinations and whatever that shit was all about. He is exquisite our Dave. To share this. I don't know what I mean or if I am making sense. Definitely their rawest album since Wasting Light, but I'm really struggling with the drive to listen to it, although "The Teacher" definitely sticks out on the album, it also perfectly encapsulates what a tough listen the entire piece is. Dave's mom Virginia and of course Taylor flow through so much of this record, it feels very much like an "afterlife" album. But I feel like that was primarily Kurt and I've never heard much influence on Foo Fighters so it's super interesting you connected that part 9:40 to Gouge Away. No idea whether its a conscious influence or just a bit of coincidence, but it's cool either way. I'm happy that Dave and the boys are back so soon. Maybe playing again is cathartic in many ways.

I loved seeing all the old video footage and imagery in this video. I also loved the pagan imagery that was overlaid. In the book, he talks about summoning the spirit of John Bonham with 'wtichy' rituals to become a successful musician. It worked, clearly.

Yeah there are so many occult symbols in this video. I noticed that.

Hey Justin, what's the range on your voice? You have an amazing voice so I am sure you have a pretty extraordinary range.

This song has blown me away! I'm no muso and so have got any notes/chords from a website but it's the variety of notes which are very unfoo. G#, Bm, D6 etc suggest an almost uncontrolled range of emotions. It's their "Funeral for a Friend" with Pink Floyd, etc. This is the Foo Fighters on a new level. On a number of posts, I've referred to it as their magnum opus.

I got the album last Thursday, only had a chance to listen to it properly twice but just like you I immediately got the Pink Floyd vibes when I heard this. In the Foo's interpretation of course and while I didn't love it at first listen I reckon it will be the favourite in a week or so. Surprised they've managed to come back with such a great and varied album after some questionable ones.
