I love that Iman Vellani started out as just a fan of Kamala Khan (even cosplaying her at conventions) before being cast to play her favorite character...and now she's evwn writing for the character in the actual Marvel comics!

Kamala's experience as a teenage Muslim girl with an older brother is not uncommon. The family dynamic is very often played out in this way. The older son is the little Prince and the younger daughter is often treated as a delicate flower who must be protected from the outside world.
(Source, Muslim ex-GF, I showed her Ms Marvel and she laughed and said the experience was spot on.)

I really enjoyed Ms. Marvel. I love how different it feels while still keeping that Marvel charm. And I still find it extraordinary that the actress playing Kamala wasn't even an actress; just a super-fan who auditioned for the sake of it and is now co-writing Ms. Marvel comics for Marvel. Fantastic!
Great reaction as always. Can't wait to see the 2nd half of the series

Without spoiling anything (I hope), Kamala's parents and Miles' parents from the Spiderverse are easily my favorite parental characters from the MCU.
And I'm very glad that you caught the Eternals reference; I feel like so few people catch that.

The thing I like about this show is the authenticity. The teens actually look and act like teens as opposed to 90% of teens portrayal in other projects. It annoys me when teens look like they’re in their mid to late twenties or they act nothing like a teen.

Fully concur. And these teens show differing levels of maturity between one another, *and* in different levels in different topics within themselves! All of which is a normal part of the high school experience. I don't know if this was intentional on the writers' part, but I like it. 😊

@@dyegorodriguez2126 yeah I wasn’t referring to the script I was referring to the portrayal of teens. This is one of the few shows that actually get teens right in how they act and what they do.

Here are some interesting facts and details you should know about Ms. Marvel. The show itself is pulled straight out of the pages of a comic book except her powers and origin story. In the comic books Kamala had a stretching ability similar to Mr fantastic while also being more plastic like which gave her the size changing and a ability to change her appearance like a shapeshifter. All her comic book powers were tied to her origin as a inhuman who are humans with alien Gene passed through generations activated by a kree terrigen Crystal. The MCU Kamala has a different origin with a different sort of powers. She can use hard light energy drawn from the nor dimension as weapons and shields similar to the DC character of Green lantern. If you're wondering why the clandestine people are so eager to return home think of it like this. In the Nor dimension is there basically energy beings similar to Carol Danvers AKA Captain marvel. The clandestine had access to all that power then to be driven from your home while also being trapped in a fleshy prison and then depowered enough to put you on a scale under super soldier capabilities.

Ms. Marvel has been such a joy, and actually her debut in the comics has been in 2013 so it's been one of the fastest comic to screen adaptations in Hollywood history by far. After the success of the show, which is the highest rated MCU show on Rotten Tomatoes with 98%, they hired Iman Vellani herself to co-write the newer Ms. Marvel comics adjacent to the MCU Ms. Marvel.
Also since we're in the Multiverse Saga, I'd suggest you watch the Blade trilogy, the 2003 Daredevil directors cut movie and the Elektra spin-off movie if possible. Just like with the Spider-Man movies and the X-Men movies, they will be relevant in the future, not gonna say where or when or how, just watch em you'll have a fun time. Blade in fact is the first modern Marvel movie (I'm saying modern cause there have been Marvel movies before that but they all feel outdated), this one was like the first proper and successful Marvel movie before X-Men and Spider-Man, and it's the first R-rated Marvel movie too like before Deadpool. I think you said you did watch the 2000s Fantastic Four movies so I'm not gonna ask to watch those unless if you need a refresher.

I really wish the director of the first episode was allowed to direct the ENTIRE series. And of course they should’ve had more episodes. They rushed the bill and arcs. I wish they really showcased their powers more and maybe showed her more of what the nore and their realm was to establish a real connection between Kamala and Cameron’s people. Maybe one extra episode of that before having them turn on her would’ve been perfect.

I thought this was pretty decent on first watch. Iman Vellani did a really good job. She is so proud to be her character and she is so bubbly it makes you want to root for her to succeed. I have defended it since day one. Watching it back through this makes me see how really cringey a lot of it is though. The texting scene clearly written by old people pretending to be young, the incestuous love interest, the clearly abusive family dynamic that I didn't even consider until you pointed it out, the positive portrayal of the worst parts of Muslim culture, Bruno being **the** single biggest simp in the entire MCU, the forced and deeply unfunny ice cream pizza bit. I had honestly forgotten most of the show except for snippets. It's not all bad. There are some wonderful pearls of wisdom in there. Good is not something you are, it is something you do is an amazing line. I just hope the rest of the season holds up as well as I seem to remember it.

Still so conflicted on this show. Love all the characters a lot but the pacing and story are so off. Like many of the Disney+ shows, it feels like a tighter theatrical script would have been better. Plus Kamala deserved the big screen treatment and it bums me out that they didn't introduce her that way.

Iman Vellani is living a Marvel super fans dream. Not an actress, just a fan who won the job of Ms. Marvel and writes for Marvel comics too. Just a cool story and she is perfect in the role. The weakest part of the series are the villains imo.
