  • Welcome to the review of the Modern 2 by Sharpeye Surfboards.
    We check out the FCS Mark Richards Twin Fins in this review - if you would like to buy a set, please use our link to let FCS know that independent surfboard reviews help support your decision making - bit.ly/3eEOvP2
    I have the stock 5’8 x 20 x 2 ½ - 31.6L, and have been riding the Sharpeye Modern 2 in the Fusion E2 Epoxy construction.
    The Modern 2 is a modern twin fin design, a cross breed between the famous MR twin of the 80's and the high performance thrusters of today.
    Birthed from Filipe Toledo wanting something a little different to what he rides on tour, to surf during down time between events.
    Designed for pure fun, the Modern2 maintains speed extremely well with a great balance of drive and release.
    This board will change your approach in small waves, the perfect addition to the summer quiver.
    You can find out more about the board here - surftech.com/s...
    I have been riding the Modern 2 with the FCS MR twin fin set with stabiliser:
    Mark Richard's famous twin template produces exceptional drive and speed.
    The small stabilizer (centre fin) adds control whilst maintaining the freedom and manoeuvrability of a twin fin set up.

    Spot on review.....I ride between 28 and 30 litres and went for the 5’6 (29.5 I think) and wish I’d gone 5’8. Performance is insane as you’ve said (came alive more in waves with a bit of curve) but I also felt it didn’t paddle that well and as a result you couldn’t get into waves as easy or as early. Would be good to hear your comparison with the Fishbeard?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  4 года назад +1

      Hey! They both surf very differently, especially the Fishbeard uses a keel twin and has a much longer board feel than this, especially with the wide fish/swallow on the Fishbeard keeping that very straight rail line continuing. For very small and weak waves 1-3ft, the Modern 2 is amazing, but if you’re gonna surf bigger and better waves more regularly, then the Fishbeard is the go!

      @mjstatic77 4 года назад +1

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  4 года назад +1

      Matthew Jones not with MR’s, but with Futures T1’s which are very similar - the keels felt better!

      I lied - I had one in 1999 and took it to schoolies. It was amazing, but snapped third surf and I kept trying to repair it, but it was folded through the fins and just kept snapping and creasing around the repair.

    Ripping in this video, even a few airs in the mix! I'm riding a 2+1 HS misc and have been riding alternative type surfboards for the last couple of years, slowly seeing the advantages and disadvantages of both. I'm looking to get back in the shortboard game... Are you looking at reviewing any of the JS boards specifically the ''every day dims''?

      That's an interesting question

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  4 года назад

      That’d be hard cause they are both very different. The Fishbeard surfs with a twin keel setup and has a very different feel in the water than this. But, if i was primarily going to be surfing very small waves in the 1-3ft range, then I’d pick the Modern 2 - but if I was going to be surfing larger and better waves more regularly, then I’d pick the Fishbeard.

    Great review - clicked on this as soon as I saw it! How does this compare to the CI twin fin? I have the CI in the surf tech dual core technology and also have the Modern E2 on order at the moment.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  4 года назад +1

      The C.I Twin is great, but this has a much more fun and skatey feel, really making very small waves a lot of fun!
      And it is lightning fast which is great.
      Don't be afraid to go up in size/volume if you are tossing up two sizes.

    How do you think this would go in Poly instead of E2? Do you think it would lose any speed?

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  2 года назад

      I think it’d be great, if you’re getting custom then look at the glassing and blank if you wanna keep it light ✌️

    • @matty9094
      @matty9094 Год назад

      Late to this question but can give all some info here for the record. I have a 5’8 Modern 2, poly, light glassing. Board is tons of fun and still plenty light. Can imagine it’s not as springy/fast as the EPS but a little extra weight has helped surfing slightly bigger and mushier conditions. The tons of speed this model produces I think comes mostly from the design.
      In conclusion, can confirm it’s a very fast and rippable board as a poly. EPS will give you slightly better float getting into waves and some spring once you’re on the waves. Will also last longer. In Poly, it’s a more familiar feeling and digs into the water a bit more. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the poly but I’m starting to like EPS more in my other boards so I’d likely reorder the Mod2 in the E3 construction once my current one wears out.
      Like with any board, Poly vs EPS largely comes down to preference and feel

    The bottom counter confuses me when considering how this board performs. I think that a convex or v bottom creates drag, and slows the board down. Wouldn't a board with the same outline & dimensions, but with an aggressive single concave from the nose all the way through the tail be even faster? Does the board compensate for the drag with higher volume for more flotation? I ask because I surf in south florida and I use a twin fin hybrid (1 to 7 ft) and a wide high performance short board (3 ft +) with super flat rocker to beat flat sections the best I can in the conditions I'm given.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  3 года назад +1

      Hey! The board actually felt quite low volume (lesser than what is stated), but is still very fast, which would leave me thinking its a very fast bottom contour!

    Hi! I was thinking in buying a surfboard for 4-6/7 ft. I look for speed, good paddle and drive. I´m between the lost driver 2.0, the pyzel phantom and the pyzel ghost. Most people have recommended me the phantom, but I´m a little scared that I won´t be able to duck dive properly, since I already struggle a little bit with it, and that it could be too small and bouyant for steep waves. What do you think?

      I'd love to help, but i have never ridden any of those boards, and i've never ridden a Pyzel...

    Hi Craig, love ya work, I’m 57 yrs 80 kg surf pretty well, riding rocket wide spine tek 6’3. 42 ltr MR trailer, love it, i need a paddler and a bit of a groveller. Surfing Cronulla beachies, mostly, interested in a new board, either Modern 2 or twinsman., just want an easy board to ride, I’m not a pocket surfer, need a board that generates its own speed. Too old, thinking of. 6’4 which would be around 42+ ltrs in either board. Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, Steve
