- HERE YOU WILL SEE THE FDNY AND DSNY RESPONDING AND ON SCENE OPERATING TO FREE AND RESCUE THE BRAND NEW FDNY KME ENGINE 309, WHICH GOT STUCK IN THE SAND AFTER BATTLING A 3 ALARM BRUSH FIRE, IN THE MILL BASIN AREA OF BROOKLYN IN NEW YORK CITY.

Great Video! I love Fire Trucks and Towing. Not to beat a dead horse. The Engine was likely on the shoulder with other rigs and ended up getting stuck. It happens. The FDNY has it's own tow truck fleet that can handle this job yes. Depending on the day, the FDNY Shops are not 24/7, DSNY is. Probably easier to call them. The tow truck driver was not experienced in this recovery. He should've used snatch blocks and lowered the boom to get the cables lower for better pulling. No Worries, job done.

Probably told the dispatcher that the rig was stuck and needed backup, hence the arrival of Rescue 2, the Ladder Companies, Collapse Rescue 2, the sanitation tow truck, the smaller FDNY tow truck, and the other vehicles. How embarrassing for the firefighters to need assistance for their stuck rig...

Well, that makes sense. Last one out from the fire, and they did not know the engine would get stuck, especially like that with being backed up in the sand and mud so they could leave immediately.
I guess stuff like this happens while on tour all the time. My bad for thinking the firefighters would be embarrassed about it, Joseph. Sorry.

Hi in response to your comment wouldn't they still be able to fight the fire without the apparatus being on the sand knowing the weight of both the engine and the water would be an issue if the sand in the area is soft.
YES, THEY COULD HAVE BUT THEY NEEDED THE APPARATUS CLOSER TO THE FIRE PLUS THAT IS A HIGHWAY RAMP THAT NEEDS TO OPEN AT ALL TIMES BECAUSE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC! THANKS SO MUCH MY FRIEND! ;o)

I have never seen so much group ignorance when it comes to dealing with the basic laws of physics. I'm sure these are great guys, but seriously??? 1. Empty water off the truck. 2. Use the air bags off the heavy rescue and a wee bit of cribbing to lift the front of the engine. 3. Crib under the front tires. 4. Winch truck forward. And for the love of everything firefighter, please hook the winch lines up to the bottom of the bumper so the winch is helping to lift. I swear yall. BASIC LAWS OF PHYSICS apply here!!

I don't really see much embarrassment for E309, for getting stuck in the mud. Things like that happen. What I see as embarrassing, is that R2 is unable to 'rescue' the engine! Perhaps because the crew wasn't in any 'danger?' Maybe if the brush fire was still raging, R2 would have had more of an incentive to get E309 unstuck??
WELL, THE FIRE WAS LONG OVER AND THE FDNY TOW TRUCK WAS NOT AVAILABLE AT THE TIME SO RESCUE 2 HAD TO TRY! THX.
I once got a 2000 gal. tender stuck. Dumping the tank helped, but made a mess.

All those man hours, damaged property, and yet a simple call to 1 guy in a tow truck would have had it out in 5 minutes. Sad thing is, the city of NY owns such tow trucks.....and yet, we have this. SMH!

Interesting Catch JJ, My two past jobs, Heavy towing and Recovery and the Vol. F.D. I have towed many F.D. Trucks in that way ! LOL That heavy wrecker was too small for that job.

I have to disagree that wrecker was not too small, the operator was obviously not trained properly for recovery. First thing that he should of done if it wasn't already done was have them empty the water tank which would reduce load by several thousand pounds, waster weighs a Lil over 8 lbs. Per gallon and those pumpers usually carry a few hundred gallons, second he should of doubled up on the winch lines using snatch blocks to basically double the pulling power of each line.
theGovnr1 Gov. you are correct about the water and the snatch blocks, but he did not have a clue as you said, You never truck pull on a winch which he did when he maxed out the pull load. If they had a larger truck it just would have been a easier straight pull is all I was saying. The wrecker I used to run was a 40 ton NRG on a tri axle Western Star that would have pulled that truck easy with the water onboard. But your point is well taken.

Josh W I didnt consider the on board water at first, but now that you mention it, with the fire out it would be safe to roll out a hose or two and dump the water. This would lighten the unit considerably and reduce the stresses and strains involved in recovery.

I know that, I have seen for myself, that the fire department has a rotator wrecker, in which they could have gotten that truck out within an hour! The rotator could have picked the back up and slowly moved it back onto the pavement!

I love it...a Heavy Rescue Squad rescuing a heavy fire engine...and using the K-12s to cut away the curbs!!! LOL!!!! I hope they dumped the 3.1 tons of water on board first (750 gallons @8.33#/gal. = 6,247.5 pounds).

I have seen tractor trailers buried much deeper, you just have to pull them out. It's way to heavy to try and lift with such a small wrecker, them big tires will roll right over a curb that small.

Doesn't the FDNY have a rotator just for this type of thing? Also wanna lose a few pounds? Lay out some five inch and dump the tank. Make sure you dump far enough away from the rig you'll just make a deeper hole.

Good geography lesson. There's still a lot of brush near Jamaica Bay. I grew up in Flatbush and 309 was third due in my neighborhood, so I saw them quite a bit.

Plus...I'd have set that wrecker right up on the engine and lifted the front end up and over. Don't pull into the object youre against.
