This is very exciting when it comes to change in how they will be sharpened I pay no attention to anybody else any longer my cutting game has went from a 50% to about a 95% within six months of listening to you

So I go on a vacation for a month, and come back to what I needed to see 15 years ago. Thanks for the demonstration on grinds. Have a fantastic day friends. BACON...
I gotta say Mr. Buckin. Really liked that video. 100% helped me get my 1)Saws running better. 2)Looking at my bars more. 3)Sharpening.... Understand what’s going on when you make each cut. I was having flash backs of my last 20 years of power saw work!!!! Totally awesome!!!! Vic

Ya that's what mine did till I figured out how to hand file. That's been years ago. Now its just as easy as writing my name plus I enjoy it. Love to sharpen anything you ought to see my pocket knife. Pease and grease everyone. Thank you Bucking you are one to look up to and learn from.
I WOOD HOPE YOU WOOD LOOK ACROSS AT ME AND NOT UP.. BUT FRIEND, I UNDERSTAND YOU , AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORDS, WE ALL LEARN TOGETHER ,, IF TEACHABLE ,,,LOVE ,,,,
Yes sir I agree with ya. I was taught to respect All, and look up to your elders and across to your peers. Dude I think your pretty awesome for doing all this. My son Cannen and I watch you all the time. Your the chainsaw guy to him. He he he
Hi Bill, Your examples of the effects caused by different filing/grinding techniques, confirms my experience. You mentioned the rail wear having a major effect on the coarse of the bar, this is a factor that slips by the average sawyer, especially one who does not straighten/ grind, squeez etc...but has the saw shop take care of their bars. I would like to mention a factor that has not been mentioned, which is related to the rail wear, in the opposing bearing surface of the matching chain. That is that the chain when run on uneven bar rails will also wear the chain surfaces on one side more than the other. If an operator runs a new chain for a lengthy time on a bar with rails worn on one side more than the other, the chain will not run true when switched on to a bar with true rails. I have experienced this to the point of throwing riggin fits. It is possible to run a brand new bar, with a new chain and force it to cut circles ( an exaggeration lol) but you know what I mean, so this is how the factors you showed, can effect the outcome of your cutting. Thank you for your time and efforts to make other peoples lives a lot better and happy. Keep on Buckin and Grinin!!! Mark
Thanks for taking the time to do this experiment Buckin'. My saws cut pretty good, but I have never tried full house grind...I might give it a go. You and Wendy enjoy your 20th Anniversary trip! Greetings to all you fortunate folks who are joining this wonderful family environment...you have chosen well and will be Blessed.
I've Cut all my life and didn't know that about chain slopping go from 73 gauge to 75 gauge to tighten the chain on the bar.. My saw shops have never said nothing about that , fact is none of my cutting partners know that.. I do grind my bar rail to true them off and on. The saw I use the most just turned 10 years old.. Very interesting .. Demo proves your point.. Well done..
What a valuable chunk of information! Between the bar dressing video and this, maybe I can stop cutting half moons! Thanks so much... headed to the shop🙂
Thanks Billy !! Finaly i´ve found in this video the simple explanation that i was looking for, you wont beleive how many videos and pages are talking about crooked cuts but no one is telling you which side is responsible .
Been there for sure! It used to frustrate me to no end...but now that my hand filing has gotten more consistent over the years, my saws cut a lot straighter. Great experiment...thanks!
Recent subscriber to your channel Buckin, your positivity and informative nature is refreshing. I work in a very high stress work environment (Assistant Branch Manager at a very busy bank) and when I come home, its really nice to watch your videos and relax. I had a back injury when I was 21, and decided to try my best and enjoy life more thanks to your videos. Thank you.
15:35 I absolutely love the new bunker, but the carport was the work horse that helped build the foundation for it! I have fond memories of it and it's nice to see it once in a while. Be kind everyone! WELCOME NEW SUBSCRIBERS!
Snowman you're a unique individual, I feel the same way. That's a special place, allot of people have been helped in that small square footage. Big man, bigger heart, love to you friend.
Man! Best video! Good info, do you know how much we are learning? We all think we know, and wonder.... but this is on the ground learning! Love it!! Thanks for the time Billy Ray!
Awesome video !!!!! This is what I have happen alot. So much that it turned one of my bars blue when another person sharpened the chain. Thank you !!!!
BOY love all ur vids ...i just started falling trees and every-time i watch ur falls i feel like i learn something new. and understand more on how to fall and upkeep my tools. would be a pleasure to come out some day and work with u and son for a bit.
Proven by demonstration, EXCELLENT! Thank you for taking the time to PROVE away the myths and heresay hokus pokus BS. I've never had a mentor to show me this stuff until' I found you two years ago. Yet again, thank you. I'll try to pay it forward and pass on what you've brought to us from the bush. Incredibly enlightening video!
Great info on the bar wearing unevenly with bad filing over time - Got an old Komatsu saw that always cuts squiffy no matter what, new chain or my filed chain - I'll be having a closer look at that bar next time, thanks bud!
Good Square Ground chain is so nice to cut with. Not only does good square ground cut more efficiently, it's smoother too, a round file simply can't make a true clean corner. Truly amazing to see just how crooked that cut. I believe at 25:46 I could even see the chain oscillating, I bet it would be something to see in super slow motion. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series of videos. Be KIND everyone.
I was 11, Dad 31 yrs my senior; he bucking large red oak log into firewood with little Mac 210 with 20" bar; "Its rainbowing!" He filed, still rain bowed. He filed again, still drifting a curve. I noticed one side of bar bottom was BLUE. It had been run while felling without bar oil! It was the bar that was more damaged on one side. Flipped the bar and it cut well.
Hey Bucking Isaacs Poppop here. I have to admitt, every time I think I got it. There's another explaination. I scrub my chains now. OK. Now this looks nothing like my chains. I honestly don't see a gullet in full house grind. I'm ready to just buy new ones. By the way , have you ever heard ppl scrubbing new chains, because there not quite right. Sorry Brother . Your the man. Peace and love
You can see it really well on the log and through the eye in the sky, NICE JOB my friend.. And makes perfect sense too..Friend's have a great day and I hope that ppl. are as kind to you as you have been to them..Enjoy your week..Take Care and See ya on down the road..
we can try ,we should be going by on tuesday. My mother and father in law will be with us. he is 90 and she is 87. we take them up north every year.I have to see what they have planned ,but I will try
At that age Michael you should spend as much time with them as possible, I wouldn't want them to be put through getting in and out of the car anymore than they have too Let's just plan another time when the wife and you have nothing Ok, I had no idea Michael it was a family thing.. I will make other plan's cause that's also a holiday weekend..Enjoy your self's Ok, That's precious time Micheal with them for sure..
All I've ever cut is oak mostly and I ran into this same result when I grabbed the wrong file 9ne time...that smaller C smooths out better especially in hard dry oak
Great demo Buckin'! At least it didn't come out of the big log on the same side it went in! I feel like my worst ones want to do that sometimes. If I get crooked and binding I still dummy up trying to figure it out. Always think first I must have hit something. Then I think I filed rakers wrong. Then I think maybe the bar is grooved out and needs ground or filed. Then I think the bottom of the links is worn screwy on one side. Maybe the bar is bent a little. I've got to get the light and the sun right when I stare at this stuff. If the 'working corner' isn't a sharp point and I can see anything on the sharpened edge shining back at me I know it's definitely time to sharpen. If that's not it, then any and all of that other stuff comes into play. I do think if the drivers are sloppy in the bar groove anything out of whack left and right shows up even worse. It will pull and cut to the side it is sharper on even more. Thanks for making me think and re-think this whole crooked thing! Be kind.
Billy....you remind me of Lincoln Hawk with that hat and cut off sleeves you have been sporting !!! And for the finale, The Incredible Hulk impersonation at the end of the vid....loved it brother !!! The info just keeps coming and Im loving it. Love you all...💕 be kind to each other good people ✌
I've been wanting to go to Oregon!😁 I would like to see you use one saw, the same bar and same brand and type chains, all on the same log. One new chain, then hand filed worn chain, then small C chain.
Billy Ray really liked the video. But I have this exact problem. How do you correct ?? I’ve tried putting it on the grinder to hopefully bring it back to even( although I don’t know ) if it is , I’ve heard you can sharpen the only the teeth on the side of the Chain that it “pulls to” ? Please help w an answer or make a Video. I’ve seen your chain sharpening videos a bunch of times. But correcting the problem is what we/I need. Thanks .. your fan .. Mike
buckin , did you notic the rakers on the grouns side were lower then on the round file side ? i think that has a negative affect also , what do ya think?
Excellent, this is exactly the problem I have, tried the other day to get the gullet and the saw worked better but not perfect. Will do a new try today and really concentrate on the angles. Also have to check the wear of the rails on the bar... Keep up the good work, I really love your videos! Greetings from Sweden
Awesome that does clear it up for me. I did have a my local saw shop grind my chain. And it is my bar. So I'll have to get a thingy ma Bob to dress my bars :)
BUDDY , PLEASE WHEN YOU GET A CHAIN BACK FROM THE SHOP THROW IT ON A BAR THAT IS NEW AND IF IT IS RIGHT , I HAVE SEEN SOME STRANGE THINGS COME OFF THE SHOP GRINDERS
Good stuff buckin! I’m really glad you have time to do these kind of videos and share all of this with us, it means a lot to all of us👍 love to you and the family❤️
great interjection.. grinding your own bars. I have a bar I kept because ive heard of it but I've never seen it done. what do say Buckin maybe another video
Hello, and thanks for sharing your experience. Do you have a preference with manufacture of chainsaw files? If so, what brand do you use or prefer? Thanks for your time. Ron
How come you can leave the gullet full on the ground side yet it still cuts much faster? And does hand filing last longer before going dull or does this all depend on what kind of timber you are cutting? I am in Australia and I cut red iron bark a lot with a skip tooth sthil chain rounded not full chisel, Full chisel gets blunt and damaged way to fast cutting what I am cutting.
Just picked up a new (old) Stihl 051 AV, put her to the wood today and she was cutting better curves than your 295... will have to check out that bar and chain more closely to see if I can fix her up. Thanks for the share! Always great content...
Buckin and Army. Got home today to news my pregnant wife has cancer :-(. It would lift my spirits if you could kindly send me some love please. Struggling to keep it together And I can't tell immediate family or friends yet. I've followed the channel and Buckin for a few years now and it'll help. Gotta stay strong for Mel who I love dearly of course. Thanks and hope everyone on here is as well as possible. Al
Wishing you and your wife the best of outcomes Alex , there are support groups for many different kinds of cancer , knowledge will help , talking with others who have faced the same situation will help . When you first hear the news it comes as a kick in the guts , your wife is going to need you to be strong , you may not always feel strong enough but you will be , lean on friends and family when you need to , including the Army here . I hope it was caught early and treatment options will give 100% recovery , all the best , sincerely .
Great info. Thanks for posting. It sure looks like your rakers (depth gauges) are much lower than new chain or even than my file gauge gets mine. Data I can find says the cutter should be 0.025 higher than the raker. You should show one of the anti kick back chains they put on most saws sold in the US and show how to grind down those anti kick back links, I'm sure that is a big area of confusion for a lot of new saw users. Thanks again for the video, as usual, good info. Love ya.
Need an in depth lesson on Rip chains AND sharpening rip chains, where do I measure the angle from. I'm about to learn the chain saw mill, n building a cabin with my son. I understand 15 degrees, but others say flat across, some want to cut the tooth in half, wth, you seem to know what you're doing. Thanks, great lessons.
"Love and Tolerance is Our Code" - :-D !!!!!!!!!!! You're a beautiful person Billy Ray (lol I'm a guy and I do not mean beautiful in an aesthetic sense - I'm only ok to using that term to you here because I know that you know what I mean, am referring to your overlaid-text in another video, paraphrased, 'beautiful - yes, *beautiful*' and am truly happy to've found yet another person who can speak in this way w/o some knee-jerk reactions regarding sexuality or whimsy, I certainly exude more stereotypical masculinity than the average guy but linguistics are important to me and I do try to speak as accurately as my vocabulary allows but oftentimes those around me simply cannot process 'beautiful' outside the context of "physically attractive in an aesthetic sense") Thanks for all your videos, your collection has taught me so much and I'm stoked to just think about how much more I'll learn as I work-through your catalogue (have some instinctive draw towards canucks lol, maybe it was that my ex-fiance was canadian but now that I think about it I am currently flying through your catalogue after having gone through Steve's Saloon's channel and Reg Coates' channel, just realized all 3 of ya are up north of me!! Heck I couldn't think of any cooler "contest prize" than an opportunity to go to dinner or a trade show or something with the three of you, if I ever got cancer I am totally going to try and guilt you guys into it ;D JK of course!! ) And I've said as much before but am so happy for your son as well as you, it is just brilliant to see that situation of a child being gifted a cs2511t, then whipping-up a conifer with his dad - Billy Ray - to do his first top-rigging/removal (hope his rope-burn wasn't too bad, and hope the cs2511t has become so familiar to him that it's an extension of himself! Can't help but wonder when you're planning to get him a cs355t ;-D ) Keep up the awesomeness man, thanks again for all you've contributed, wish you & yours the best of luck/circumstance, health and happiness!!
I hear him all the time saying (ground chain full house) the ground chain is a chain sharpened with a grinder and full house is a chain with a cutting tooth every other link.
I've tried to handle file square chain but its no easy task if you've round filed your whole life. There are three angles you are trying to maintain all at the same time vs just two with round. You have to use a special file that looks like a normal flat file but the edges are beveled. You can also buy a Granberg File-N-Joint and use a triangle file to file square. That what I have and it works well with some modification. You can visit treefalling.com for more help.
Hey buckin, why do the guys that race saws use a hand file to race with? is it a smoother cut perhaps? really cool video and thanks so much for all the info you share.
Gotcha, I live in Vermont, east coast you know, and all the folks that race saws around here I know hand file and grinders are kind of looked down upon, I wonder if its different wood or just preference, I do a lot of firewood, so I spend some time with my file. thanks for all the videos,
we cut mostly hardwood, sugar maple, birch, ash and whatnot, but I don't do much different for softwood when filing, just kind of curious about the grinding,
so glad mike morgan told me about your channel. i am in the rooky stages of learning to sharpen my own chains and this was a very informative video. thanks for sharing👍👍👍
Once tried that one of my rakers got bend for some reason on a 24" chain and it all wonky after that. Had to file that raker thinner to get it line again and make the chain cut straight again. Cutting big hardwood with a crooked chain is impossible and looks terrieble.
Thank you Buckin', just what I wanted to know. Now, can you demo dressing a bar, and skip-tooth vs full house? I have some experience with both, because my Chinese saw is .325 full house and my Poulan 5020 is .375 skip-tooth. I like the skip-tooth better so far because of how nice it will rip the large rounds compared to the full house. But then again it's 3/8 chain, and the full house is .325, so that might be the difference. As far as dressing a bar...not sure if it will help at this point, the chain rattles around in the groove so bad I think the bar or the chain is toast. But it's also my Chinese saw, and changing chain becomes a problem of availability. I can get bar/chain combos for it, but only .325 50 gauge. I have yet to get a 3/8 sprocket for that saw. Ordered 2 times, got the wrong one twice.
Mr. SMITH, looking for a user friendly lifeline when working a spar. If you or any viewers have a good solution, please, please respond. I'm looking for added security, beyond the flipline, that would work up and down the spar. I really dig your style, Buckin', and can't get enough of the chanel! Thank you - over and out
Thanks for the reply, Marty! When you say "choke line", are you using a running bowline? I'm investigating the use of an adjustable friction saver, but not sure what route to go.
I use a steel carabiner (for speed) around the tree since it slightly side loads it but a bowline would do just fine too. Then just a 30"eye-eye prusik cord to a carabiner and bridge. Loosen it and hold it with my flipline while decending then tend it tight below my flipline once ive reached the next work position. If you use your climbing line for it its easy to toss a figure8 or rope wrench etc under the prusik and belay out on it. Makes the transition quick and easy
It does my old heart good to see someone get so excited over chains and saws and bucking logs.
God Bless you Buckin' Billy Ray

Be kind.
Brother you have changed my life!!! Thank You
Billy....you remind me of Lincoln Hawk with that hat and cut off sleeves you have been sporting !!! And for the finale, The Incredible Hulk impersonation at the end of the vid....loved it brother !!! The info just keeps coming and Im loving it. Love you all...💕 be kind to each other good people ✌

Oh yeah...the proof is in the puddin'.... Great demo Buckin! Keep'em coming buddy :)
K I WILL
I've been wanting to go to Oregon!😁
I would like to see you use one saw, the same bar and same brand and type chains, all on the same log. One new chain, then hand filed worn chain, then small C chain.
ALREADY DONE ,,PATIENCE MY FRIEND
Billy Ray really liked the video. But I have this exact problem. How do you correct ?? I’ve tried putting it on the grinder to hopefully bring it back to even( although I don’t know ) if it is , I’ve heard you can sharpen the only the teeth on the side of the Chain that it “pulls to” ? Please help w an answer or make a
Video. I’ve seen your chain sharpening videos a bunch of times. But correcting the problem is what we/I need. Thanks .. your fan .. Mike
Good stuff to know. Had that happen to me once. Re ground my chain and off she went. Hope everyone is doing well!
Wow, that may have been your best video ever! First hand knowledge right there. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing Buckin'!
AAHHH YES ,,, AND UNDERSTANDING MAN ,,WELL DONE BROTHER AND THANK YOU
buckin , did you notic the rakers on the grouns side were lower then on the round file side ? i think that has a negative affect also , what do ya think?
Buckin why does the ground side cut with a gullet left in and why does a chain not cut as well without a gullet when hand filed ?

Hello, and thanks for sharing your experience. Do you have a preference with manufacture of chainsaw files? If so, what brand do you use or prefer? Thanks for your time. Ron
What do you mean when you say “ ground “ chain ? Do you mean using a power grinder ?
Thanks for this video, really helped me understand!
RIGHT ON BRI ,, WELCOME ,, THX FOR BEIN HERE WITH US
Great demonstration
How come you can leave the gullet full on the ground side yet it still cuts much faster?
And does hand filing last longer before going dull or does this all depend on what kind of timber you are cutting?
I am in Australia and I cut red iron bark a lot with a skip tooth sthil chain rounded not full chisel,
Full chisel gets blunt and damaged way to fast cutting what I am cutting.
Just picked up a new (old) Stihl 051 AV, put her to the wood today and she was cutting better curves than your 295... will have to check out that bar and chain more closely to see if I can fix her up. Thanks for the share! Always great content...
YOU BET ,,,LOOK CLOSELY MOST TIMES WE CAN NARROW IT DOWN BY A GOOD CLOSE LOOK (( INSPECTION))
Mate!!!!!! I know!!!!hehehe. Beautiful day again mate she's getting warm lovely! !!! Lovely! !!!!
STUDENT, ARE YOU LEARNIN'' HAHAHAHAAA LOVE YOU LEONARD

Love ya.
25 - 30 DEGREES IS WHAT YER SEEIN SIR , ANTI KICKS I SUGEST AFTER USING THE RAKER GAUGE GIVE IT ANOTHER SWEEP
Buckin have you ever tried sharpening the back side or your chain like some guy do on race saws
IF I WAS IN COMPETITION IT WOOD BE DONE BUT I SEE BETTER THING TO FOCAS ON FOR US HERE ,, THANKS TRAV
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Buckin. 20 years. Still on your honeymoon !!!🤣🤣🤣
alright now.. this is the cool stuff I like to see that nobody does.. I am so excited to see you experiments! rock on friends
MUCH MORE TO COME
Buckin.........! You're gonna make me cry filin out a ground chain 🤯
Heck I couldn't think of any cooler "contest prize" than an opportunity to go to dinner or a trade show or something with the three of you, if I ever got cancer I am totally going to try and guilt you guys into it ;D JK of course!! )
And I've said as much before but am so happy for your son as well as you, it is just brilliant to see that situation of a child being gifted a cs2511t, then whipping-up a conifer with his dad - Billy Ray - to do his first top-rigging/removal (hope his rope-burn wasn't too bad, and hope the cs2511t has become so familiar to him that it's an extension of himself! Can't help but wonder when you're planning to get him a cs355t ;-D )
Keep up the awesomeness man, thanks again for all you've contributed, wish you & yours the best of luck/circumstance, health and happiness!!
Billy which chain I like the best a flat top chain or a round top
Great info buckin very helpful, welcome new subscribers :-)
What made the tree fall that hit you?
First of all: congratulations on your 20th! :)
Thanks for the effort of making this video. Again a usefull one.
THX
Congratulations on your 20 years with Wendy.

Explain to me how and what do use ground chain?? What file?
I hear him all the time saying (ground chain full house) the ground chain is a chain sharpened with a grinder and full house is a chain with a cutting tooth every other link.
JOE CAPOZZIELLO he uses a chain grinder you can hand file with a special file check out Baileys online.com
Marshy thank you 🙏
Hey buckin, why do the guys that race saws use a hand file to race with? is it a smoother cut perhaps? really cool video and thanks so much for all the info you share.
I guarantee the race guys are using a ground chain, not hand filed. They do a lot more than just sharpen the curve though.
NO RACERS I NO USE A HAND FILE ,,,, NONE , ALL USE A STAND UP GRINDER AS I DO FOR FALLIN THX GMB
Buckin aka the mad Canadian scientist!!
Awesome demo
KOOL
Once tried that one of my rakers got bend for some reason on a 24" chain and it all wonky after that. Had to file that raker thinner to get it line again and make the chain cut straight again.
Cutting big hardwood with a crooked chain is impossible and looks terrieble.
Congrats Billy may you have 60 more.
thx
ANG YOU CAN SWAP OUT TO 3/8 IF YA LIKE ON THE SMALLER SAW BUT SEE IF THERE IS A WIDER GAUGE DRIVER TO DROP IN YOUR WORN OUT BAR
ILL DRESS UP A BAR
What a neat video Buckin I'm lovin the cool ideas and the eye in the sky is awesome too. What brand of files do you prefer?
KOOL THX
Great stuff their Buckin thanks a million
WELCOME RICK
God bless you my friend
great channel !! :-) can you put links to the products you use ? , I cant find the deepth gauge you are using
HUSKY IS THE MAKER SIR TYHX
Mr. SMITH, looking for a user friendly lifeline when working a spar. If you or any viewers have a good solution, please, please respond. I'm looking for added security, beyond the flipline, that would work up and down the spar. I really dig your style, Buckin', and can't get enough of the chanel! Thank you - over and out
I use a choke line and prusik to the bridge on my saddle.
THERE ARE MANY OPTIONS. ALL OF THEM I AM TOTALLY UNFAMILIAR WITH . LOVE YA BROTHE R
