The articulation and tone quality in this performance is insane, especially in the third movement where things so often get slurried. I have a confession that I went to a score video for this piece so that I could see the music and the entire way through the video I was like "man, this cellist could learn a lot from Cho about how to play this piece." Then when the video was finished I went down to the description only to find that it was Rostropovich himself! Oops. I stand by that this performance still sounds so much better though.

Not only is it so beautiful, but very relaxing to listen to - because your intonation is phenomenal...

In 1990, while a student at Peabody Prepatory, I was asked to play 2nd horn for this piece, sitting in for someone who'd become ill. I had never heard it, but it immediately became my favorite piece. It was the first time I heard a "real" cellist. I've heard it this so many times at this point, it's sick. I've never heard Brannon Cho, but what I am hearing is absolutely stunning - the style is consistent and impeccable, and to hear the overtones on an internet connection in my recording studio are absolutely lovely! Bravo buddy! I've not even heard the second movement yet, but this is truly beautiful.

This might be a dumb question, but is it written in to play at the beginning with the orchestra? When I learned it, that wasn't there, and you're the first I've seen do it. Anyway, lovely performance, it's one of my favorites for sure

It’s pretty common when we play without conductor! You can also see many violinists doing this in Mozart Violin Concertos. It was very common (expected, actually) in the 18th century, and orchestras love it when you join them. Thanks for watching!

@@BrannonCho you don’t by chance have any recordings of Gendron’s cadenza from the 1st movement of Haydn’s 2nd concerto? It’s tormented me for months and I’m in desperate need of inspiration

Cellists of class play the intro music with the orchestra, and conduct their own orchestra.
