Good advice Daryl. I heard a good saying years ago: "when times are good, people will spend money to save time. When times are bad, they'll spend time to save money". In other words when the economy is going well they'd rather pay someone to do the handyman jobs. When the economy is not going so well they might leave those jobs until the cash is flowing again in future or try to do it themselves. Building relationships with your customers by doing quality and reasonably priced work will help to make you recession-proof due to their repeat requests to do more work. Reputation is everything.
You're right, reputation is everything. About 75% of the work that I've done since last fall has been referral or existing customers. I haven't slowed down at all and I'm definitely not cheap. I'm just not ridiculously expensive.
Hey Daryl!! I don't comment on videos much, but I just found you and I've watched a few of your videos. I wanted to take a second just to say, keep making them sir!! I'm newly retired and starting this handyman service fresh from ground up. I'm finding that watching your videos is like just hanging out with a friend. Great job! and I'm looking forward to watching more. Have a Wonderful Day from "The Retired Guy Handyman"!!
Thanks, much appreciated. That's what I want this channel to be. All things handyman and some business talk with real life mixed in. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious but always entertaining. So welcome in, hang up your coat and kick off your shoes, there's plenty more to come!
Rich people were some of my worst customers honestly. Very entitled usually, and they try to not pick every little thing. I once had a women complain because I swept up my mess but not the whole kitchen for her. 😅 middle class and lower class were always so appreciative and patient.
I agree. You have some that are down to earth but some that are so entitled It's ridiculous. I have a couple of affluent areas around me that I stopped working in because it was such a headache.
With my experiences the rich customers want to be apart of the project and get you anything you want to eat while the poor customers try to get everything done for free. Or always have a problem with something.
I been in the game 3 years and you are totally right. I’m going back home to reset and get back on my feet but I’m not giving up on my handyman business. I’m going to invest in learning new skills especially drywall and frame work.
I work for a utility and rich people are usually horrible. I love working the middle and lower class areas the most. The people are real and appreciate your work! Thanks for the videos. I’m doing handyman work as a side hussle cause I’m getting too old to run and gun with the young guys in the electricity trade. Appreciate you man!
I’m about to start my own Handyman business in the uk after working as a general maintenance guy for a big transport company for the last six years and doing various building and joinery jobs previously to that. My skills are very varied and to a good level so I can do most small to mid size jobs within most trades. My issue has been taking the leap….. I’ve been constantly working on weekends and evenings to get my name out there and I’m finally going it alone in March. I’m even taking the company I currently work for on as a client as they still want me to do certain jobs for them as a contractor so it’s win win for me and them. Never burn bridges, never promise what you can’t, always turn up on time and always leave jobs clean and tidy! These go such a long way and will win you repeat business all the time. I’m 42 and I think that I’m at the perfect age to be doing this, any younger and I didn’t know enough, any older and I wouldn’t be able to do as much. I love this job and couldn’t do a single job again, every day is different it’s great!
You're definitely at the perfect age to get going. Plenty of experience and still plenty of energy. Congrats on getting the employer to become a customer as well!
Daryl I just started my handyman business in July full time and your videos are so great. It's not hard to see how you've grown a successful business. You're a great communicator with a great outlook. Thank you from Canada, your videos mean a lot!
Much appreciated! Even though the economy is a little tough right now, I think it's a great time to start. If you can weather the storm now, you'll be successful at any time.
You speaking truth 💯 I went through the exact same thing trying to build my business. I’ve been doing it for 4 years the first 3 was just like that up and down but it’s steady now and I’m just trying to bulls from here
thanks for the wisdom been in this business for almost thirty years and you seem to be very knowledgeable about your craft keep up the good work Start to Finish home Improvement Drew
Thanks Daryl for another great vid! Agree with you. The drywall repairs are a great source for customers with great reviews and usually call me back later to do other work. Middle class is a great demographic for handyman work- my middle class clients are busy and just want a person they can trust to show up when they are supposed to and do good work.
I think since most people struggle with drywall once they see you do it they think you can do anything haha. As far as the middle class goes, I couldn't have said it better myself. A lot of people have money for their repairs, they just don't want to risk losing it dealing with a shady handyman.
I’m almost the opposite, my specialty is drywall/paint. I’m a great handyman as well, just moved from Virginia Beach where my drywall repair business did great for 4 years. Starting fresh in Lynchburg, Va with a ton of drywall competition. Thinking about going more the handyman route, have you guys noticed that people are more hesitant if they want high quality work? Handymen have a bad rep for being jack of all trades but expert at none. I want to do the highest end repairs possible
I DID A FENCE O. A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE THAT HAD VERY NIGHT CURB APPEAL AND TOLD CUSTOMER THAT IF THEY WERE HAPPY WITH THE WORK I WOULD GIVE A DISCOUNT TO PUT MY YARD SIGN ON THERE GRASS FOR 1 MONTH AND IM BOOKED THRU FEB '24!...SO THAT WAS MY TRICK!
I had a company in my area do that. Before they had a website or anything, they put up yard signs everywhere. For a little while. I couldn't go into a parking lot at any store without seeing one of their signs. Definitely a great move.
Hey daryl, Im new to your channel and i dont normally follow anyones channels but you and the videos you have that ive seen are just absolutely relaxing and motivating to listened to. Its as if i'm there with you relaxing and just talking over some normal day stuff. I really appreciate your videos and i really hope to see many more in the future. Thanks alot for the inspiration , motivation and insight on the overall outlook to the handyman and tradesman life / lifestyle. I just started my handman business this year in Hampton roads area of Virginia, if you have any pointers that could possibly help id love to hear them . I appreciate it . Keep up the great work.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch . I made this channel as a resource for learning and motivation. Hopefully sometimes there'll be insights and perspectives from directions that are never really thought of. Having a handyman business is not just having the ability to fix things although that is a major component. Congrats on getting your business started , you've already jumped over the biggest hurdle that most people have. Wishing much success to you and there will be plenty more videos to come.
Another great video you dropped a bunch of Jem's on this one. Your approach to the handyman business lays it out in layman's terms. All of your content is so motivating.keep up the amazing work. I'll catch you on the next one.
As always I appreciate you taking the time to watch. I try to approach it in a way that would have helped me when I was starting out or even when I was just thinking about starting. Good to hear that it's helping.
Hi Daryl, I been in the handyman business for 10yrs now. I still find the struggle of balance between big and small jobs. I feel like when your taking/on big gigs you then got to turn away those small jobs because a lot of ppl want it done asap, that translates into customers needs not being meet and you know what happens then.
When you're working solo it's easier to pick a lame versus trying to do both big and small jobs. The only reason I do both is because I have customers that understand that I'm not going to be able to just do their job for a month straight and nothing else. If they want the job done by me then they usually don't care about the timeline.
Dayrl love your vids, man I’m listening to you and looking at that nasty looking pick up tk bed but what I’m getting to is I know someone that’s exactly what he does he follows contractors and cleans up their worksites mostly builders and renovators but always has work 😅
You're right, my truck bed is a disaster and it rained so the insulation is wet! I finished up a bathroom renovation project but I have a project starting where I have to remove the carpets in two rooms so I'm waiting to go to the dump. The work site cleanup sounds like a great idea, definitely one I never heard of but it makes complete sense. Contractors used to make the new laborers do all the cleaning. It's probably much easier for them to contract it out.

Spend at least 10% on marketing to keep phone ringing
That's the truth. Every time my phone calls would slow down or stop I'd be kicking myself for not at least running low-cost ads at all times.
Daryl fuckin cool dude lol
Rich people are rich because they dont spend money. Remember that. I make more in rentals and trailer parks then anywhere.
It's crazy right?!?! I see large companies in middle class communities all the time. I'm not sure why we can't do the same.
lol...find rich people; True!
Lol!
