Any fusion owners hearing a clunk in the rear of their fusions. The noise is coming from the nut at the top of the shock. All you need to do is tighten it. I had it develop at like 60k miles, thought i needed new shocks. Just realized the top nut was loose causing the noise, give it a good snug and it wont knock. Use a pair of vice grips to hold the stud from spinning with the nut, since it wont tighten if the stud spins with the nut. It happened on both left and right rear. Just realize itll re loosen itself over time, i noticed it happens usually in the fall and spring times with temp change.
Replaced both rears and clunking started several months later. About to retighten. One question the instructions on the lower mount were unclear. It looked like I was supposed to mount the lower mount from below the control arm instead of mounting the shock to the top of the control arm. Any clue?
Thanks for the video. I have a 2013 ford fusion and I need to replace the upper shock mounts and shocks because of the clunking noise coming from the back. This explains why. Never think these videos are not worth it. They are very valuable.
Well, knowing the rust belt you live in, and you were able to get that shock nut off with the Earthquake, knowing you're working the heck out of it, I'm sold... Ordering one today.
I'm thinking about it as well since he runs the snot outta his. I use a corded Dewalt, but battery power would be nice. Order fast because when they find out everyone here is thinking of getting one they will jack up the prices.
Thank you for your video! My experience with a clunky rear shock absorber on a 2016 Lincoln MKZ (Hybrid): First attempt: Tried tightening the shock absorber rod nut, but it didn't turn much and didn't resolve the sound. Second attempt: Applied some penetrating oil and let it sit for a couple of hours. This time, without even holding the tip of the shock absorber rod, I could turn the nut with a 15 mm wrench for almost a full turn. I stopped tightening when the rod began to rotate with the nut. This resulted in more torque than the specified 22 lb.ft (possibly around 50 lb.ft). On a short test drive over a pothole, one of the shock rod ends broke off above the mount. It was clear that I had over-torqued the nut, causing the rod to reach tensile yield strength. I ended up ordering OEM Motorcraft shocks and Dorman shock mounts from RockAuto. Inspecting the old shock mounts, I didn't notice any obvious damage, but I replaced them regardless. This resolved the clunky noise issue. I didn’t remove the height sensors, and they weren't in the way. Additionally, I didn’t run the “Ride Height Calibration.” The car seems to drive fine. You might want to measure the height before and after to determine if a calibration is necessary.
Thanks Mr O, just about to do the rear shocks on my Mondeo (Fusion in USA) so nice to see it was uncomplicated and nice point about the nut and angled mount
NOT sure why you posted this Vid ? cuz these things are a PROBLEM....i.e.: my kid's 2015 Edge has a slightly diff mounting on the bottom . This will help me get through it ! thanks....Solid Vid...great help. thanks again sir !
That's a great video man.... Don't be so hard on yourself.... It all doesn't have to be the "diagnosis to end all diagnosis'es" where you need 3 autels and a Verus..... Us home gamers, don't have that stuff anyways, so, it's fun to watch, but..... In reality, I'm screwed, if I run into that. My scan tool is a Blu Driver.... and I'm so pathetic, I actually think it's great. It tells me what I need to know. When you look at recommended repairs, it has worked for me 100% of the time. Maybe I'm just lucky.... What seems obvious to you Sir, given your years of experience, is all new to us "regular people". My uncle is telling me "I hear a clunk noise in the back"... Ford Sedan. So I'm like, I dunno. I'm a GM guy. Then I see this video, it's like, holy crap, that's it??? Whoa. I could get these parts off amazon, and I could do it.... I mean, not on a hoist, like a superpro, but... in the driveway, on jackstands.... Look, he's retired, his 401k could be a lot better than it is.... I wish he had asked me sooner... But it is what it is... So anytime I can save him a few bucks, it really helps him out.... So, while we joke about hugging a polar bear, your videos, ARE ACTUALLY HELPING REAL PEOPLE! Not like, talking, and flushing money down the sewer, but ACTUALLY HELPING. I hope you keep it up. Best Regards, Patrick
Buddy, I really enjoyed your video. I can relate to your delivery and how you go about things. So thanks much. Oh yeah, and thx for walking me thru the process for my 2019 Fusion. I’ll be re-using nuts with loctite too. And for the reminder of “aluminum” lower control arm threads with steel bolt. That can be stripped easily. Good call
Been watching you for a while now and have learned as well have enjoyed your videos! I want to say though, my respect for you increased a lot when I watched the video of you helping Vinny with the repair on his handicap scooter! Really awesome thing you did! Thanks for the great videos!!!
Smitty Smithsonite I waited until noon and we had 14 inches here in CT. Got that cleaned up and got hit with another 8 to 20. I'll get that in the morning lol.
Yikes! You guys got hit worse than we did. It drifted a bit up here, so there was 6" in some spots, and well over a foot in others (some areas were 2'). Just got done an hour ago (still lightly snowing too). What really sucks is the ground isn't frozen under all that snow - got stuck quite a few times with the plow truck, and was watching the fireworks in the dark from the rocks and mud the snowblower was tossing everywhere. Was wet snow underneath the powder - the snowblower's exhaust was cherry red the whole pass. She was working hard!
Had a rattling sound coming from the back passenger side of my car.... Tore out every panel convinced my kids dropped something back there. Turned out it was the shock / mount. Thank you for this tutorial! Replaced it with minor trouble (getting screws in bottom brackets was tough), but the rattling is gone!
Actually I'm glad you did post it. My wife's 2013 had the same noise but on the drivers side. I tore half the car interior apart trying to find out where it was coming from since it resonated inside the trunk wheel well. I was certain it was coming from there. Finally decided to jack the car up, took the wheel (that some idiot had air gunned on to about 300 lb-ft forcing me to destroy those stupid lug caps) off then removed the plastic wheel well covering. Shook the car and through a process of elimination finally figured out it was the stupid shock mount. Simple repair once I figured out where the noise was coming from but wasted hours locating the noise.
One of the first things I did is replace the lugs with solid chrome very cheap and you'll appreciate them changing a tire in adverse weather. Floor jack, star wrench and regular lug nuts equals quick easy flat change.
How many times do I have to say One man's plastic is another man's women! All your vids are great because not everyone knows how to do all things mechanical! Even the videos of you helping the animal shelter or helping that wheel chair bound vet those you may not know are your very best videos although you probly don't give it a second thought.
Dorman is ;listening !!!!!!!!! I just had a youtube survey asking what products I've got a positive opinion of and Dorman was at the top of it LOL.It was Dorman,Mevtech(?),TRW and MOOG.
I was hoping we would see a different kind of video the way the Ford Fusion was bouncing up and down. Reminded me in my younger years when I did not have money for the "no tell motel", another good video thanks Eric.
My word for the day ....Cantid..... My Tomato plants are looking a little Cantid. I like the way Mrs O tried to changed the subject, But you didnt let her get away with it, good going.
there a lot of great videos out there including this one but you always leave out the most important information which also deals with safety issues let alone proper fitment and that is Nut and bolt torque specifications.
Ok. My 14 Fusion had that rattle in the r/r area, my brother and I checked all the suspension, that mount, since I was told by alot of people that was the problem. Finally I bought the mount and bumper, honestly once it was apart, bingo. The inner bushing was shot. But between the bumper, being recessed in the bracket, and the nut, is what held it enough to not be able to tell. So fellow Fusion owners, if you get that rear rattle, don't hesitate, but and change that strut mount! Bumper not so necessary. That's for the vid, def easier taking the whole strut out to change it! 🙏🙏😊
Thanks for posting! Looks like a pretty easy job. In Australia, they act like these Mondeos (Fusions) are some kind of exotic, and want to charge $500 fitting for new shocks. I'll DIY it!
Yeah, they're ridiculous. I can't even see a reason they use them surely these two piece nuts would cost more to make than single piece ones? Anyway, $40 and they're all replaced with proper ones, so not that big of a deal.
That hook you removed from the wheel well, is a hook the cable or telephone co will use to hang wire from the pole to your home, there where lucky no damage was done. LOL
Hey, all my accessories and heater works with the key out and doors open in my 03 rustyrado. needless to say, my battery didn't agree with this and it committed suicide. The culprit was ERIC O'S favorite thing. AFTERMARKET remote start box. It died.
Thank you for your video..i have the same car 2016 2.5 lt and now i have to change both rear socks.... thanks to your video I'll be able to do the job and save me lots of money.... thank you once again. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🫂
I get so used to buying aftermarket stuff that I always get burned by OE parts that are sold individually. One time I tried to buy an OE Cub Cadet starter for a diesel tractor, and they literally had every single part of the starter for sale separately - bendix springs, brushes, armature, gear, case screws, etc., etc. - was enough to give me a headache! Japanese motorcycle companies normally have an un-numbered listing above part #1 on the "fiche" that is a complete assembly - you can always tell by the massive price tag that it's complete. Just did a brake job on the Silverado yesterday - the 8th one in 92k miles. The first 5 were done under warranty, lol. Way to build 'em, GM! Had my neighbor drive me down to the garage that turned my rotors to pick them up ... and we broke down on the way back, HAHAHA! Never a dull moment in my life. Passenger side brake nearly caught fire! I melted a few gallons of snow on that rotor and caliper to keep the fire at bay. It was literally seconds away from flame. '03 Sable with 176k on it - I've been keeping her going for the past 5 years, but it's becoming harder and harder lately! 😂 Almost time to ship her ... to the boneyard. I ate lunch at 5:30 after that adventure. Him and his son just threw struts in it last week, and it has a noise that sounds like a bad strut! Rut roe! Was a complete assembly, so I don't think it was anything they did - just no-name Amazon parts for ya. 😉
9:44 - Oh yaaa I was thinking oh man he isn't gonna fluid film that top piece, really eric. Then bam , Fluid FIlm! - 13:04 Eric - when in doubt , always post.
I don't see much but I believe it's the first time I've seen a side mount for the upper part of a shock. Good vid. I had a 68 stang back in the day and it was getting perforated three years in. The 79 Rabbit same so hanging a bracket on sheet metal I guess is a newer thing. We've got salt in southern NY too.
That thing you took out of the wheel well is a Drive Hook, its pounded into the telephone poles. Its used by phone company tech's to attach drop wires from homes to telephone poles. The P-Clamp attaches to the drop wire and then onto this. It must of fell off a truck. They can only be removed by unscrewing them out of the pole, very rarely they are pulled out. The drops usually break first.
You were hilarious! Great video for the DIY guy (I’d have reused the mounting bracket and nut). I liked how you showed where the rattle might’ve been coming from. Hope the wifey got the boyz their water ok! 😊
the lug nut underneath the chrome cap is actually an 18. i work at a ford dealership and we all have that 19.5 flip socket and when it gets real bad we sell the customer the set of lug nuts from the parts store instead of the factory ones. they suck!
Personality alone will get you a sub. I'm about ready to do my wife's shocks and struts on her 14 Fusion. I don't know why in the hell Ford puts that crap cap over the lug nuts.. I bought a 19 F150 and am going to change the lug nuts soon.
Just replace the shocks on my beatass 98 Ramvan. Front were actually broken and not even connected to the mounts.......rear were original and blown-out. OH MY, the 60-bucks I spent on those cheap Gabriels, the difference between night and day. The ride was scary-bad before I changed them.....now it is pretty dang good.
i am so glad to hear i wasnt the only one to struggle with the shitty fucking oem lugnuts. I was proud as a DIYer with basically no tools beyond a $100 socket set, to be able to get my swollen lugs off with what i had. Replaced those things so fast afterwards lol
Simple job great information for a If I can do it you can do it DIY person. My wife wants to start working on her car after watching your videos Thanks Bill N (still using the Bus cards I sent you need any more)
G'day, Mr. O, & Mrs. O! I enjoyed the video! By the way, I touched an electric eel, the other day. It was 'shocking!!' Thank you very much for posting the Ford Fusion, Rear Mounts, and Shock Replacement!! Terrific job! Cheers! :-) 🚘😊💕
That’s a “J” hook used in telecommunications work, you drive that into a utility pole and make attachments to the pole. Service wire hanging to the house. CATV uses it also. The company that makes them is Joslyn.
Definitely thanks for posting this. Have the exact same noise on my '12 Fusion. Guess I know what I will be taking a look at. Keep making the great videos Eric O. Appreciate all that you do.
I have a squeak coming from my driver side over bumps and someone said it could be the top strut mount or the strut itself but others have told me bushings.. very confused
Man...the suspension of that car is nasty salty! All that caked up crap! I'm glad I live in the south! My mom's got a 6 year old Hyundai and the brake calipers are still shiny (as seen thru the wheels). Southern living is easy on the cars!
when I first heard the clunking I thought swap bar links, then listened a few more times and the clunk sounded too heavy to be them ;) videos make it harder to tell.
Have you decided to post it. The suspense is killing me. Another Nor'easter hitting us today. Let's see how many of my trees come down in this one. The last one took out my neighbors fence. Simple yet still enjoyable.👍
On a recall for the brake line replacement. I had my Ford dealer replace those junk lug nuts and replace them with REAL ones. My cost was 70 bucks if I remember right.
Great video - thanks! Dont see any reason you could not re-use that locknut. Was waiting for you to say "there's your problem lady" once you had the shock out and could see/hear the play in the upper mount. "Can't you see that its canted..." LOL BTW we got 18+ inches of snow here in eastern MA. God bless Paul
I have nylock nuts on a couple bolts that fasten the rear of the diaper on my car and that diaper has to come off every time I change oil. The car is 15 years old. As long as the nuts provide some resistance they are still good. I'm also running the original, one use only, aluminum washer on the oil pan drain plug. No leaks.
As the proud owner of a 2014 Fusion I am glad you posted this. Even these routine procedures are helpful for the DIY'er.
I was just about to say EXACTLY this. Also , you're picking up another subscriber. :)
Absolutely. Thanks Eric! My dealer quoted me $1000 to replace the rears on my 2016. 4 bolts, 2 shocks, and 2 brackets? Yea... tackled this myself. LOL
Wife’s car is at 58k miles and after reading your comment I think we are having the same issues. Thanks for posting this.
I'm in the exact same position. If the noise only comes from the left rear side, do you think it's necessary to replace the other side as well?
@@kevinsonpolynice2376 definitely. Do both sides
every time i watch your rusty stuff, it makes me appreciate not being where it snows!!!
The way it started I thought maybe Mr. O and Mrs. O were testing the shocks. Then he had to cut out what Mrs. O said. Dirty job
I bought a 18.5mmX 19.5 mm socket. Helped me with the out of shape Lug nuts. Good video. Makes it seem possible to do with not to much trouble, thanks
Well, knowing the rust belt you live in, and you were able to get that shock nut off with the Earthquake, knowing you're working the heck out of it, I'm sold... Ordering one today.

Need to do this same repair.. Glad you already had a video showing how easy it was. Love the channel!
These videos make every day a little bit better. Thanks so much for everything you do.
Thank you for your video!
My experience with a clunky rear shock absorber on a 2016 Lincoln MKZ (Hybrid):
First attempt: Tried tightening the shock absorber rod nut, but it didn't turn much and didn't resolve the sound.
I'm glad you posted this, mine went while picking my wife up after she was rear ended. Thanks!
Never seen a FORD part go beyond 4 yrs......that old strut is now a museum piece!
Just wanna say your video help me diagnose and fix my ford fusion. Was driving me nuts all fixed now thanks
NOT sure why you posted this Vid ? cuz these things are a PROBLEM....i.e.: my kid's 2015 Edge has a slightly diff mounting on the bottom . This will help me get through it ! thanks....Solid Vid...great help. thanks again sir !

Couldn't have said it better myself, Patrick. 👍
And he’s a vegan!
Brian Mulligan that's what made me a patreon.
I hit a pothole today and broke the top of the mount out on my 2016 Fusion so this was just what I needed. Thanks for posting this!
Yes another Northeast storm beating up New England today. Thanks for the entertainment Eric!
So I'm not the only one doing absolutely nothing today! 😁 Gotta save up my energy for snow removal later today.
Smitty Smithsonite I waited until noon and we had 14 inches here in CT. Got that cleaned up and got hit with another 8 to 20. I'll get that in the morning lol.

Thank you for this tutorial! Replaced it with minor trouble (getting screws in bottom brackets was tough), but the rattling is gone!
That was the factory caliper hanging bracket for when you do a brake job.
At least now I know where that annoying rear rattle is coming from and how to fix it. Thank you sir!
no BRAK ECLEAN , NO BIG NASTY , BUT MADE UP FOR IT WITH LOVELY MRS.O GREAT VIDEO ERIC
+1
Actually I'm glad you did post it. My wife's 2013 had the same noise but on the drivers side. You do these to help us who work with our hands for a living and for entertainment purposes
Thats prob the easiest shock setup to remove I have ever seen. You don't even have to crawl in the trunk :)
It looks like one good "oops, speed bump" would punch the shock into the trunk :D
That's Scotty Kilmer job going in the trunk
Dorman is ;listening !!!!!!!!! I just had a youtube survey asking what products I've got a positive opinion of and Dorman was at the top of it LOL.It was Dorman,Mevtech(?),TRW and MOOG.

Thanks for the tip about the 19.5 / 18.5 socket!!!
My word for the day ....Cantid..... My Tomato plants are looking a little Cantid.
I like the way Mrs O tried to changed the subject, But you didnt let her get away with it, good going.
Guys thank you, this video made doing the job at home on my wifes car a damn sight easier.
there a lot of great videos out there including this one but you always leave out the most important information which also deals with safety issues let alone proper fitment and that is Nut and bolt torque specifications.

Hey this was super helpful!! I had some clunking in the back end and this was exactly it I knocked it out really quick with this. THANKS
Thanks for posting! Looks like a pretty easy job. In Australia, they act like these Mondeos (Fusions) are some kind of exotic, and want to charge $500 fitting for new shocks.
I'll DIY it!
Thanks for the video, very helpful.
And the lug nuts are why I will never get another Ford vehicle again.
Yeah, they're ridiculous. I can't even see a reason they use them surely these two piece nuts would cost more to make than single piece ones?
Anyway, $40 and they're all replaced with proper ones, so not that big of a deal.
Thanks for posting this. I have a 13 fusion and apparently this is a notorious problem for the model.
So is that J-Hook factory equipment on the Fords These days lol. Damn, dude got lucky on that deal. Good find!
Oh man. Viewer discretion advised, any video from sma is a great video
Thank you for deciding to post this video. It was a great help. Gold bless
Short,Long always worth the watch...Thxs again good showing...
Another dose of rust and reality... Great video Eric!
That hook you removed from the wheel well, is a hook the cable or telephone co will use to hang wire from the pole to your home, there where lucky no damage was done. LOL

Always post these videos and just be thankful that everything worked out. You know the next time will probably be pain and suffering.
Great Video! Looks like easy shock change. Fluid film to the future rescue. Good to see Mrs. O again.

I don't see much but I believe it's the first time I've seen a side mount for the upper part of a shock. Good vid. I had a 68 stang back in the day and it was getting perforated three years in. Amazing, had no idea what that sounds was for months
Alot better design than the previous gen fusion.
Thanks for ending up posting this, super helpful. Also that wheelhouse is crusty af
Super helpful video, thanks. If you hadn't made the video nobody would believe that J hook thing was stuck in the wheel well like it was :)
Its a great video for alot of DIY'ers. Makes this job easier for them than they might have thought it would be.
you called it a "damper"! excellent, dude!
You were hilarious! Great video for the DIY guy (I’d have reused the mounting bracket and nut). I liked how you showed where the rattle might’ve been coming from. Hope the wifey got the boyz their water ok! 😊
the lug nut underneath the chrome cap is actually an 18. i work at a ford dealership and we all have that 19.5 flip socket and when it gets real bad we sell the customer the set of lug nuts from the parts store instead of the factory ones. they suck!
Great video, man! Now I know how easy it is.
Thanks from Brazil.
Cheers! :-) 🚘😊💕
If this Fusion's a rocking...its a new SMA video! :D
5th degree to Mrs O intentions!!! Pretty pretty good Eric!
Good info 👍..
I replaced my lug nuts ASAP 💯😂😂. Like $30 a set it's totally worth it
4:00 That's a hook for utility poles. Power company puts them in poles to hook strain reliefs, guy lines, and other things to the power pole.
We call that a Jhook in our industry. We use them on wood utility poles to hold up guy wire or random telephone wires slung across the place.
Thank you for the information on the video....
Rather "shocking" SMA video. Squeaking nice one! Hahaha! So glad you posted it, aye, Eric O! Great video! 👍👍👍👍
Really appreciate this video sir, helped me along the way with my mystery clunking noise in the back!
Man...the suspension of that car is nasty salty! All that caked up crap! I'm glad I live in the south! My mom's got a 6 year old Hyundai and the brake calipers are still shiny (as seen thru the wheels). Southern living is easy on the cars!
Thanks for posting. Just what I was looking for.
Rebuild the nylock nut. Hit the top with a hammer. it pushes the nylon out so it works just like new in a pinch.
Eric we love the simple nuts and bolts videos........:)
I came here to watch how to change my rear shocks. I hit the thumbs up because your wife is adorable. If you can do it, I can do it!
when I first heard the clunking I thought swap bar links, then listened a few more times and the clunk sounded too heavy to be them ;)
videos make it harder to tell.
That is a J Hook used by the utility companies to hang cables and Phone wires in the poles
Have you decided to post it. The suspense is killing me. Another Nor'easter hitting us today. Let's see how many of my trees come down in this one. The last one took out my neighbors fence. Simple yet still enjoyable.👍
That hook bolt is called a J hook use them in poles to hang wires off of from the pole to the house. Good video by the way 2
Thank you so much for posting this video!
Keep it up. I found this video to be very helpful.
On a recall for the brake line replacement. I had my Ford dealer replace those junk lug nuts and replace them with REAL ones. My cost was 70 bucks if I remember right.
that is a "J hook' for stringing telephone service drop wires from the poles to the house or pole to pole amazing finding that there
Great video - thanks! Dont see any reason you could not re-use that locknut.
Was waiting for you to say "there's your problem lady" once you had the shock out and could see/hear the play in the upper mount.
"Can't you see that its canted..." LOL
BTW we got 18+ inches of snow here in eastern MA.
God bless
Paul
Like the mechanical video's. Great change from the electronic stuff. Thanks
Any new video is a good video👍🏼
Thank fudge you found it. I've been looking for my joslyn everywhere.
No leaks.
