The Sega Final Fight homebrew is very impressive, no doubt. However, it is an unfair comparison considering the SFC port was on a small 8 megabit cart done very early in the SFC lifespan under a strict deadline since it was among the first games released. Even the missing bar patrons in stage 3 somehow got past quality control. This Sega port has the luxury of a much larger ROM size, decades of experience and documentation of the hardware and no pressure from corporate bosses wanting to meet a release date. Having said that, the MD does have the advantage of the 320x224 resolution mode and seems to handle more large sprites on screen although this port does show some pretty severe slowdown and sprite flicker at times.
I agree and disagree. The slight extra resolution of MD makes no difference to sprite size and most MD / SNES games used identical sprites for this reason. Arcades did have even higher resolution, more processing grunt and loads of ROM space to allow for larger sprites.
Well, Final Fight was one of the first SNES games after the launch titles. A new attempt with a ROMsize of 32megs, three playable characters, 2 player mode and all stages included would be very interesting!

Ok I just want to compliment you on your editing skills. Clearly a lot of work has gone into this video. I'm literally only 1 minute in and it's already the best side by side comparison I've ever seen. No disrespect but I'm not sure if I've ever seen your channel before but I love content like this so I hope there's more after this 😀👌. Megadrive v SNES are usually the most popular but I'm always keen to see side by sides of the NES v Master System simply because like most people I guess I've always been more of a Nintendo fan but in recent years looking back now, it's hard to ignore just how fantastic Sega's 8-Bit colour palette was so it would be nice to see comparisons of games released on both systems, visually along with performance. Videos like this.... it's the only way to be sure 😉
Simply by the fact that the MD version has a 2-player option, it completely sweeps away the SNES version. If we also add that it has larger characters, with many more animations, no stupid black bars, ideal resolution, more game options, no censorship and a color and sound very similar to the arcade version, the decision is clear. And we're seeing a beta version on MD! There are still many things to add and improve! But realistically, if you want to play a version of Final Fight on a home console today, the MD versions are undoubtedly the right choices.
@@SomeOrangeCat Because, unlike you, there's a lot of people in the world who actually care and love this console still in this day. That's why it has so much more homebrew scene than, say, the SNES.
@SomeOrangeCat - Because people like to put a case into the shelf with a colorful instruction-manual, instead of having a soulless download. And using a Mega Drive is easier than having a computer and getting 2 controllers into the USB-ports and modify them.

Granted they have had an extra 30 years to maximize the power of the Genesis/Mega Drive, but this is beyond impressive! Final Fight was one given to me the Christmas I got my SNES, along with F-Zero. I had my hands full with awesome new games and a new machine to play them on. I loved Final Fight, but had no idea what a downgrade the SNES version was from its arcade counterpart. The Genesis/Mega Drive version is damn near a carbon copy, from what I can tell. Honestly, it’s a good thing this never came out way back when, because we never would have gotten Streets of Rage if it had. Mad love for this awesome version of this awesome game!❤❤❤❤
Streets of Rage was a SEGA 1st-party game, so it would've still happened regardless... The extra competition on the same console would only mean that we would be getting even more and higher quality beat 'em up games to choose from. So, no BIG loss at all!
Hmm...Interesting. I'm intrigued by the Final Fight MD's F1 Power Mode in the options menu. Several options available: 60 FPS- 4 Enemies Standard Game (Gameplay Footage) 30 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Standard Console 60 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Overclocked CPU I guess that makes sense with the first option. Not a expert or anything but its shown at points. Haggar and Guy move about smoothly and so does the stage elements. But when chaotic situations like around 12:07 with Haggar, Guy, 4 enemies, and stage props everything slows down.

Even though they omitted my favorite character (Guy) I still loved FF on SNES; but I didn't realize just how different they truly were until many years later. One of the reasons they're different is that FF arcade is a standalone game, as is FF CD on Sega; while FF SNES is the first game of a trilogy.
Imagine how good the SNES port would have been on a 32 megabit cartridge instead of an 8 megabit one. It’s a shame the game came out so early on the SNES.
Cartridge size played a lot into the overall game and lack of content and authenticity. However, you’re right that adding additional enemies and 2 players could have caused slowdown issues at that stage of SNES development.
The Genesis one blows the SNES version out of the water despite its obvious limitation in color palette. However, it's being developed without the limitations that developers faced back in the 1990's. They were strict to their SDKs and whatever they could pull off with tight timelines and limited budget and resources, and cart space constraints (which affected the cost of the end product). Also it was not of their interest to make home versions that could compete directly with their own arcade version. So, while it's true that Capcom gave lots of attention to their SNES conversions, they always made watered-down versions for the home consoles and it was up to their developers to exploit the strenghts of each console. In the end I'm happy to see how powerful the Genesis could be if given enough resources, but a homebrew for the Super Nes in 2024 could potentially be a lot better than the original as well, exactly because developers today have so many more resources.
This is the same Capcom that made Alpha 3 for Saturn far better than the arcade original. Anyone pretending the SNES version was going to compete with the arcade at launch has no idea what the SlowROM downclocking was, much less the hardware issues.
@@OldSchoolRetroGamingFanI'm guessing it's got really bad slow down. Final Fight 2 and 3 run ok, they just aren't quiet as well conceived as games overall.
The Genesis version is on top here. Of course it benefits from the programming knowledge of the last 30+ years. It still has slowdown and flicker present when too many sprites are being used on screen, but it is presenting a 2 player game with more detailed levels, more enemies on screen and full transitions between stages. The Snes version was impressive at the time, but had to cut plenty of things when it was released; one of the characters, 2 player simultaneous, background detail, and complete stages and enemies where dropped. Sequels on the Snes did have 2 player gameplay, I wonder if a version closer to the arcade original could also be produced on the Snes now?
It reminds me of how people were crapping all over the SNES version of Wolfenstein 3-D vs the Genesis homebrew. The SNES port had two HUGE disadvantages kneecapping it: Nintendo censorship and the publisher demanding the game be ready in less than ONE month.
Lets try this again...my last comment sucked and was deleted. Anyway they keep improving on the Final Fight MD Demo. 1. Orange and blue text on a black screen on the option screen is much easier read than the SNES blue on blue screen. 2. Speaking of options being able to switch out the FPS and enemies is a nice touch. 3. Two player mode was a cool feature for the Mega Drive Demo. However there were moments of slowdown throughout the playthrough. Can't have everything but room for improvement. 4. With the controller visualization I find the disk D-pad and button layout better on the Mega Drive version. It just works here. ❗❗(We really need the whole English Alphabet Sega-fied. That would be awesome.
Genesis: Los tres personajes originales del Arcade. 6 sprites simultáneos. Mas velocidad. Mejor animación. Modo de 2 jugadores Mejor Intro. SNES: Colorido. MD/Génesis wins!!!
This is the kind of videos I like to watch nowadays. Making new games on dead consoles years after people have complete mastery and understanding of all the older systems. I am so looking forward to what games will look like on Saturn, Dreamcast and PS1 nowadays.
Well, I think a lot of people would disagree that they are "dead" consoles. I personally have a Sega Genesis model 1, 32x add on, and about 40 original games for both the Genesis and 32x. I had gifted this to my niece way back in the day and this past Christmas she gifted them back. I gave them to her when she was about 10 (she's now 32) and now that I got them from her, I'm playing them at the ripe age of 52! And guess what, still works. No red ring of death, no yellow light of death, no disc stuck in the drive, no hard drive failing. Just enjoyable games that transcend generations. Food for thought...
@@dinnerfor1540To be honest and fair, the Saturn also lasts pretty long too... I had a friend back in high school who bought a pre-owned Saturn, and he got at least a good 8-10 solid years of use out of it. He palyed it EVERYDAY until he moved onto the Dreamcast and other newer consoles. It still works OK even today, as a matter of fact. He simply just outgrew videogames and doesn't have the time to play anymore. The same can't be said about the PS1 tho!
@@sobesons it's a modded hack and if you watched up until stage 2 you see how bad the MD chokes at trying to keep a steady frame rate because the system can't handle it.
It was a very powerful machine for its time. For some reason Sega wanted backwards compatibility with the Master System and that is the reason for the small color palette. Otherwise it could have had thousands of colors. Also, for cost reasons, Sega couldn't include scaling. 2 years later it was cheap enough for Nintendo to put in their SNES. Also, the sound chip was custom for the SNES and was way better than the Genesis. But I don't think people realize that the SNES was 2 years newer and back then, computing power grew exponentially. But even with that, the CPU in the Genesis was far superior to that of the SNES.
@@axelfoley20 faster CPU & the Genesis often ran a higher resolution than the SNES. The Genesis can also make 3D Graphics without using an enhancement. I was blown away when someone showed me Star Cruiser which was released before Star Fox & Wolfenstein 3D!
@@bloomerb4162 in 1991, FF for SNES was the closest thing to "the arcade at home". It was amazing, in fact, I bought my SNES b/c of Final Fight and many friends did the same. Before Street Fighter 2 craze, Final Fight was the big thing. In the late 80s and early 90s the technology was changing so fast 2, 3 or 4 years marked a HUGE DIFFERENCE in technology, night and day. We have to take that into account when we compare versions. Playing Final Fight in '91 was totally different than playing it in '93 or '94 when Doom, 3DO, Jaguar and the Playstation were on the street... Final Fight in '93 was retro!! In '93 we were playing Doom. That's why I laugh when Sega fans talk about how superior was FF CD... yeah it was superior but It was launched almost 3 years later than FF SNES!! In '91 people were playing NES... in '94 people were playing Playstation!! Final Fight was a amazing in 1991 and that's why I praise the SNES port. Historical CONTEXT is everything.
I love that the SNES vs Genesis battle still rages on 33 years later. Im surprised no one has called for a real showdown with medieval weapons in a field somewhere. Build myself body armor with SNES console shells and a flail with snes controllers and nails driven through. Honestly, I liked the Genesis too when I was a kid, but we had SNES.
The MD version shown in this video is not the Mega CD version nor a hack of it. It's a brand new conversion for the MD meant to be closer to the arcade version, and it's still in development.
Hey, the Snes version soundtrack is still good. The MD versions soundtrack is not bad neither but at least i feel both sound better then the original arcade.

A few things just to keep in mind: 1. The SNES version was an exclusive launch title for the system. The stock Genesis never got the game back at that time. 2. The SNES version was made literally over three decades ago. The Genesis version is still not finished as of June 2024. 3. The SNES game runs in SlowROM, so it's only running at 70% of the system's full CPU speed. 4. By comparison, Maxwel has optimized SNES Final Fight 3 to run at 60fps without slowdown with two players, and he even reduced the game's forced blank a little further while he was at it too. 5. The SNES version of Final Fight came on an 8 Mb cartridge. I've heard the Genesis version is 32 Mb. 6. The stock Genesis version can currently have four enemies on-screen at 60fps, but to have six it runs at 30fps or can be overclocked to have six at 60fps. 7. Maxwell showed an example of Final Fight 2 with six enemies on-screen, but there's just far too much flicker for more than four to look acceptable there. Now, with that in mind, I can comfortably say the Genesis version is the better of the two as they both currently exist.
Impressive! despite the obvious advantages of being developed a lot later. I loved this game so much when i was younger, was lucky to own the Mega CD version but this version is so close.
I got the SNES version when it came out because that's what I had, but I was very disappointed with all of the censored elements, on top of the one-player only. Thankfully I can play the real deal arcade version on Steam now.

This looks more like the arcade port than the SNES with more destructible objects in the levels. Keep in mind Final Fight was a rather simple game. One thing to notice is how green the colors look on the Megadrive and the SNES version looks way more colorful. I think the main reason for the color difference is not so much the onscreen colors (which are only 64 in the Megadrive) but the fact that each color in CGRAM is only 9bit RGB given it a range of 3 bits per color channel for a total of 512 color to chose from compared to the 65K on the SNES
Wow. Another game with no deadlines, cartridge size limitations, with the advantage of modern tools and optimizations, etc. is more impressive than the 30+ year old version. Will wonders never cease.🙄
As an owner of the Super Nintendo back in the 90s, I must say that this version of Final Fight is superior in every aspect. Everything from 3 characters, 2-player co-op, the breakable telephone booths, and the extra animations makes this arcade perfect 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkk E o povo quer comparar. 😅
@@JonBR-622Claro que é menor, a resolução da maioria dos jogos do SNES é 256x244. A resolução do Megadrive em contrapartida era 320x224. Cool video. A shame Capcom got lazy with the Snes port. For Final Fight 1 this game the genesis was the better version however the snes did do good enough to get 2 exclusive sequels very underrated. I'd even argue FF3 was better than this game because you could do 2 player and or ai auto assist and the gameplay was better.
Grandes 16 bit!!!.
Back in those days, I just had to appreciate the game porting that imitated the arcade version as much as possible. I dreamed of playing the perfect arcade transplant game at home one day. If there were games like Genesis Ver. Final Fight back then, the game industry would probably have been turned upside down. 😁

The slowdown that happens in the genesis with the barrels shouldn't really need to happen, sprites that are not moving don't take any cpu time or DMA time if they're not being animated so it should be possible to fix it. Proof is if you pause the cpu the sprites still stay on the screen.
I just wonder how it's gonna handle things, when the game starts throwin' like 8 to 10 enemies at you all at the same time in the later levels... Even the arcade version's CPS1 hardware suffered some VERY apparent and noticeable slowdowns whenever that shit happens!

60 FPS- 4 Enemies Standard Game (Gameplay Footage)
30 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Standard Console
60 FPS- 6 Enemies Extended Game For Overclocked CPU
I guess that makes sense with the first option. Not a expert or anything but its shown at points. Haggar and Guy move about smoothly and so does the stage elements. But when chaotic situations like around 12:07 with Haggar, Guy, 4 enemies, and stage props everything slows down.

Imagine how good the SNES port would have been on a 32 megabit cartridge instead of an 8 megabit one. It’s a shame the game came out so early on the SNES.
Cartridge size has nothing to do with it: 1 player, 3 enemies, few objects!
Cartridge size played a lot into the overall game and lack of content and authenticity. However, you’re right that adding additional enemies and 2 players could have caused slowdown issues at that stage of SNES development.
Or with a special fx chip etc
The snes would still not powerful enough to have lots of enemies on screen.
Yeahhh of course SNES is better

That Genesis version looks awesome!
Over 30 years later and Genesis still does what Nintendon't. 🤣
There is a 2 player SNES Final Fight iir, that was made only about a year ago.
Yeargh, we need to keep HOUNDING on Capcom until they finally agree to release a 100% arcade perfect port of Final Fight on the SNES!!!

Sega genesis was always powerful

A few things just to keep in mind:

But she was trying to pass off the weakest kick on the SNES as the strongest, when confronted about it, she tried to claim it was an honest mistake. Here's the thing though, she's an avid fighting game player. She did it on purpose. She's from Brazil, loving Sega is a national sport there, and cheating is absolutely on the table for her.
@@SomeOrangeCat - I come on here for a LAUGH and that's what I get most of the time. BTW the Street Fighter experience is dramatically better on SNES and SNES had the 6 buttons in their unique way FIRST. BTW didn't Playstation take "pretty" much the exact prototype of a SNES controller for their controller ???
@@cobrakainevereverdies6940 Exactly, like with most things Sega made, their controller layout was an evolutionary dead end.
Please compare Tekken Advance for GBA vs Tekken 1 for PS1.
Incredible programming! 🤯💯👏 Wish there could be a physical release on MD! 🤩
Super Famicom version It is very abbreviated, yes, but it plays excellent, there is something in its control that surpasses the Mega CD version, only in that the control, how it reacts to the commands when hitting...
Well, this Megadrive version has enormous merit, it looks AND SOUNDS incredible, but it lacks a lot in terms of playability to be the Arcade or the Sharp X68000 version.
No Final Fight Guy aparece.
I always knew there was a plot with megadrive... in the 90s. the games were terrible for the megadrive. but here we can see the true power of that console. Megadrive wins😊
it's so shame. MD is such a good console.
That MD version makes me all warm and fuzzy inside 🤗🤗🤗
GENSIS do what nintendon't!
Hahaha yes, one in a trillion games where they won...
@@DarthPferd no, there are a lot. Genesis do, Genesis do what Nintendon't!

Sega was always great when it came to arcade to home console likeness especially with capcom games like STRIDER now im just discovering FINAL FIGHT as well. From the graphics, sound effects voice likeness and the music SEGA WINS HANDS DOWN.
How oh how don I get my hands on the Genesis/Mega Drive version, physically?
It yet another homebrew that will probably never get finished, just like most of Gasega68K's projects.
@@SomeOrangeCat sad. It’s magnificent!
@@brichan1851 It kind of drives home the main issue with these comparisons. You have the finished product someone was under the gun to complete with all kinds of restrictions placed on them vs a passion project the creator has no real incentive to even finish, if they don't feel like it.
@@SomeOrangeCat I hope he does, though. I’d at least love to get the finished ROM.
@@SomeOrangeCat And then there is also the issue with copyrights/licensing... How do we even know fer shure, if Capcom would sanction this project?
It's a shame they didn't release this version for Genesis at that time because it would have wiped out the SNES version for sure.
This version wouldn't have existed. The Genesis would have gotten the same game that SNES did, but perhaps with even more cutbacks, as Capcom had no faith in the Genesis.
Licensing issues, bro...
@@SomeOrangeCat True. Capcom sure would have went with a rather lazy port, as rushed as the SNES one. Maybe they could have kept all three playable characters and 2-player coop though, with less slowdown than in the SNES version, but the cartridge size would still have been an issue, as a 32 Mb cartridge would have been way too expensive back then.
I always hope that one day someone will be able to make a faithful version of the Altered Beast arcade game.😁
Genesis clearly wins here, but there are ~30 years between those versions. The only better things on SNES are the sound and the colors.
No.
@@chrisw8069 yes.
Plus with 2 players on the screen, you would be having like 10 or 12 moving sprites on the screen. Do you think that would even be technically possible on the Genesis? 😲
Blast processing wins 2:38
Always thanks for the good content but, maybe somewhat awkward comparison, I would say...
