The main ridge of the Central Fells continues south from Ullscarf, dropping over a field of rocky knolls to cross the wide depression of Greenup Edge. This is the connection to High Raise, the highest of the Central Fells. To the north, the natural boundaries are unclear. Standing Crag provides a terminus to the summit plateau, rising above its reflecting tarn. From here the ridge continues across wet ground towards High Tove, the next Wainwright. Some guidebooks consider the intermediate Bell Crags (summit unnamed on Ordnance Survey maps) to be a separate fell. A second subsidiary ridge extends north-north-west from the summit to Great Crag, passing over the twin tops of Coldbarrow Fell.
Between these two northern ridges lies Blea Tarn. A large pool of about 40 ft (12 m) depth, Blea Tarn provides the main feed for the more famous beauty spot of Watendlath Tarn. Drainage to the east (and Thirlmere) is provided by Ullscarf and Launchy Gills, the former flowing via the secluded Harrop Tarn within the Thirlmere Forest. This may be a corrie tarn that has silted up over time, extensive shallows being colonised by sedge, water horsetail and yellow water lilly. These waters are joined by the Wyth Burn from the south of the fell. All water from the west of the fell reaches Greenup Gill via a number of feeders and flows to Derwentwater.

That's a really helpful video, thank you. I've not done Ullscarf yet from any direction, so that was very handy! It looks like one to do after a dryish spell with all the wet and a clear day as I can imagine it being quite a concentrated navigation exercise in the clag or on faint paths. Always more tiring and takes longer when it's either wet or rough ground or both. Leo is very sweet, plodding along after his friend Billy, even if he did end the walk a different colour than when he started! Super drone footage as always. Billy's mastered that snare drum nicely too in amongst giving it some welly on the bass drum! 🤣

Thanks Irene yeah it's a tough old route with the ground wet completely different in dry conditions but the line from Low Saddle to Dock Tarn is more or less straight so you've just gotta fight through it 🙄
Leo is lovely in't he we've looked after him for years...lol he's just so soft and adorable Billy just ignores him haha he gets jealous 🤣
      Have a great weekend Irene

Smashing walk Andy. It's lovely round Watendlath. Poor Leo, he looked a sorry sight at the end with his black leggings on ha. He looks a little love, although if he ran in a field of sheep you'd have trouble finding him 😆 Thanks for sharing and as usual say hello to Tracey and Billy the ROCKSTAR*

Hi Andy, Tracey, Billy and Leo. That was quite an adventure especially for Leo haha. You certainly put him through the mill lol. I dont think thats a route we would be rushing to do especially after rain but still amazing views and Watendlath is without doubt a special kind of place and weve always stopped at the wonderful cafe for a brew. Great viewing and info once again. ATB to you all

We tried to do a very similar walk to this but sacked it off. The weather forecast was overcast but it actually rained the whole time. Like you say the whole route is a bog of doom. We couldn't cross the outflow as it was in full spate. I renamed the tarn to bleak tarn and we tramped back across the bog🤣🤣 we were the colour of Leo when we got back😅
