- On-camera flash has many advantages over off-camera flash. It’s quick to set up, compact to carry around, and when you’re working on location, that’s often the most important factor. Off-camera flash on the other hand means photographers have the choice of bigger, more powerful flashes that can be modified with umbrellas or softboxes and placed in positions that make the light far more exciting.
Join Gavin Hoey live for a location portrait session where he takes you through the pros and cons of working with both on and off-camera flash. Join the conversation, get your questions answered live, and help steer the session or just watch along as Gavin shares his top tips to help you learn location lighting.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!
I loved this video! Then your reference to David Bergman was great too! I love how photographers work together! Both of you are fantastic and Sophie is beautiful!
i love the gavin´s video on adorama. Easy to understand
Always number one
I thoroughly enjoy watching Gavin’s video lessons. His energy is remarkable and I especially enjoy his sense of humour. He keeps it light, fun and learning so much enjoyable! Thanks Gavin
Love your energy and furnishing us with your wealth of information. Sophie is awesome and so are the ladies behind the camera too!
Gavin is the best, always makes us laugh and learn.
Thanks Gavin i learn a lot from you, i have a magmod and thanks to you i know to to use it.
I always learn something useful with Gavin, today how to use the plastic cup of my flash and bouncing on a silver reflector.
I missed the live one. You guys rock, Gavin with his personality always steals my heart,,,,, great job,,,You are inspiring so many people around the world,,,,thank you,,,
South Africa here. Your videos are really great. I have learned so much from you. Thank you Sir.
You should let Sam come on camera world curious to see what she looks like. It's so much fun watching you and these videos we all learn so much. I never saw anyone with as much energy as you I get tired just watching you run around. 😅
You are always sheets of joy to watch
Can really relate to all the adjustment movement never enough time and heart dropping when something goes wrong. Fantastic. Gavin the Govnor everytime.
Great to see how to work out the problems on the fly.
Hi Gavin, you mentioned wedding photography (~ 13:35) - I do not shoot weddings but would you shoot differently today, with you'r versatility and practical experiance, would you shoot weddings differently? say with a couple of OCF and assistanses?
I think some costumers can appreciate better quality than quantity.
...thinking about it now - OCF can stand for both: On/Off Camera Flash.
I always try to watch Gavin videos. One of the best instructors. Always enjoy his videos.
Genuine l like you show the good and the not so good same thing we all go through lobe Gavin
Great video, thanks Gavin, Sophie, Sam, Freya and Seth! 😎👍🇨🇦
Great to see Gavin's not precious about making the odd mistake 👍😁
Hello Gavin, from Cape Town South Africa
Keep them coming Gavin! Love your quirky style of presentation and communication - an adorable "Crazy Uncle Harold" type figure (every family has one)
Amazing video, but one question would like to know what does he take to get that high...need to try that 🙌
35:30 we can see the photo you shoot is not the one with the softbox, but with the manfrotto reflector
I like the look of off camera flash. Thank you great video.
Like how its all in the moment. We see what an actual photographer deals with on site, while also explaining the processes.
Loved it need more
This is very important lesson for us
Another great outdoor flash tut.
One word Awesome 😀
good insights.
P mode, exposure comp on -1 and flash exposure comp to +1 will make your subject jump out of the picture. Slow shutterspeed + second curtain, and add a colored gel to your flash (adjust whitebalance) and you are on fire!
It can look fake though. Old school fill-flash balances fill and ambient to look natural. If done correctly, many people can't tell flash was used, but would see the difference if placed next to the same shot without flash.
The modern trend seems to be 'let's make it obvious that flash was used' and make it look unnatural. As though there was a spotlight in the middle of a field lighting up the subject.
@@cooloox Or that’s just one way of many to make the photo your own. Some photos you may want it to look natural, but than you have some you want to subject to jump at you. Even still someone that doesn’t know photography still wouldn’t know what was going on. All they will see is a fantastic shot. Just have fun and do whatever.
@@cooloox ver true!! Makes the subject seem “plastic”/ fake.
@@wyrmmm I get what you're saying.
Really good video, lots of tips and great to see it live. Thanks
Still use my Stofen filter, works a treat when travelling light. Sophie's make up choice makes a difference to the images too, not too shiny or orange looking. Great video again.
Thank you guys!
I use that size softbox and ad400pro plus your sekonic meter. My camera is a canon eos rp and tamron 24-70 g2. Great video. More of this please..watching the live...recording. Hehehe
Haven't watched yet but I know i can say: "Another great video" and not regret it.
Excellent as always
Excellent Gavin!
Hi from Melbourne Australia. How about a couple of flashes off camera with different setting on each?
Great video Gavin
Is there any way to get more light on the legs? I love the position of the light but for some reason it bugs me when I take photos and the legs are in shadow
Is that intro scene the same woods where you photographed Fern?
And we too will return in 4 weeks for MORE GAVIN HOEY and the amazing CHLOE.
thank you very much
You are the best. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Awesome video Gavin 👍
As always, a very good video!
could you plese post the lnk to the vdeo you mentioned re choosing your first flash
I have one of those. It came with my flash.
Well done ,my question is how speedlight is working when is on slave mode as I know should be on Master mode when is on camera Thank you
Detroit for Gavin!
Very enlightening...sorry😊 Loved the video!
P stands for perfect ;) Thank you for the stream, Sophie is such a sweet lady
Hi from Tucson,Az
Hi there I'm from Philippines!
Hello. From quezon city Philippines too
Is your setting on auto white balance?
What lens are you using now?
nice work Oklahoma city
Hi Gavin! When you taking pictures with flash do you need to setup white balance?
Speedlights used to come with those. I guess they don't any longer, maybe Nikon speedlights still do... not sure.
Can Nikon d750 camera work with new z series lenses ftz adapter because all videos in social media can use z series camera with f mount lens ftz adapter. But my question is f mount cameras with z series lenses Can it be used through any other adapter?
Not sure if anyone ask this already…
How do you go about using the meter when using multiple lights.
I normally do 3-4 light set ups and being curious about using a light meter to take some of the guessing away.
Hello from Maine. USA
Nice presentation on location and thanks for your efforts to reach people. I like photos taken with rectangle soft box. Amazing photos and lighting.
Please i want u to make a tutorial on your audio sound quality of your videos. im huge fan of you.
Great video mate. . Keep up the good work.
Hola,Flahspoint es Godox??
Gracias.
Fantastic work as always. Where did Sophie learn posing and expressions, she is very good at it and curious how to get my subjects in same mindset/flow
Hello from Chicago
Would you use Aperture Priority
Love it always
When your just using flash as fill light is directional light from your flash still important? Do you still need to get the flash off the camera?
Hi From Australia
Thanks
Keep up the great videos thanks
Would it help using a small modifier made for a speedlight on camera
Good question
Philippines here
I am so sorry I missed the LIVE VIEW today - I got my times mixed up - I was thinking New York time not UK time... but as always I enjoyed the video
I've noticed in many of your videos that you mention you are using your flash sync speed of 1/250 sec. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say you are using your maximum flash synch speed of 1/250 sec.? I know that is the maximum flash synch speed for my camera before going into High-Speed Synch.
For weddings, on camera flash or off camera flash ?
So not only do we both have transmitters held together with tape, both forget to turn on the lights before setting up but I caught that you announce out loud where you put things (flash meter) to help you remember or for someone else to tell you if that fails. Had to laugh because I noticed it's what I do just the other day.
What wireless microphone are you using?
I just love the Gavin Hoey gang... Gavin himself of course, Sam, Fraher (sp) and the models you use. Sophie's great... Active, poised, and (to me) an enigmatic look, most of the time. It's just as fun to watch today as it was many years ago, when you first started here. :)
Cheers

Personally, I'd like to put it frosted gel over the Flash --- for more of a lightbox effect...
The OCF looks much better once you metered and everything was right with the exposure. Purely opinion of course.
How about a dismounted flash?
Why do I get flash lag. I press shutter but flash fires 2 seconds later.
Pray mode?
What does native iso mean ?
I het hotspots nom model face even using 120 cm octa
Doesn't matter far or close to the subject
Always get on nose and forehead
Using Godox V1 in octabox
Canada
wish Adorama would ship their version of the Godox trigger to the UK, seems that we're the only Country that they don't
Get a GoII from Rode
P is for professional mode
P isISO priority
why don't you leave the manual
camera exposure alone, & just alter/try different manual flash settings on the flashpoint
!t ?
...eliminate variables !
Hi
"Flashpoint" flash = GODOX
