Though there is more to say on it, the comment on female deacons is “15 minutes ago” by men who are acting effeminate is a bit much. Both John MacArthur holds to that as allowable as did RC Sproul. I agree there are weak kneed men today but I certainly would not put them in it that role. MacArthur makes a great support for female deacons from textual examination.

If the question in these circumstances has to be nuanced/massaged, the scripture’s answer cuts right through any of that and renders clearly that the minutiae need not even continue. Following God is far easier than we often argue/rationalize. Are we sinful creatures; absolutely, but God’s commands are actually easy to discover.

Pastor John MacArthur said that older women can teach younger women on Godly womanhood and women should be workers at home according to Titus (this eliminates working outside the home for women unless volunteering in the church which shouldn't compromise their devotion to the husband, children, and household):
    Titus 2:3-5 [NASB2020]
Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, 🔸️TEACHING🔸️ what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, 🔸️WORKERS AT HOME🔸️, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

In Gen. Regarding Abraham he is the authority of menservants while Sarah is the authority over maidservants and also her child Isaac. Based on this in addition to 1 Tim. 2:9-15 woman over women, man over men. But also examining Peter he says even that if the man be disobedient to God she must still prove her faith to her husband in the hope that her chastity would be an ensample for the her husband. Furthermore elder women must teach the young to love their husbands so this means women are for men as keepers of their homes and comfort. Tldr God judged Adam saying "because you listened to your wife and not me" then it is not lawful for a woman to have authority over man, how much more should she be subject to a faithful man.

My mom is a worship director and has been in charge of men who have either been as part of the worship set or those coordinating sound and projection, and I have told her already that I don't believe scripture supports her role in that position. As it has led to a lot of fights in the past, I don't bring it up very much anymore. My husband and I agree that if a woman is to be in leadership in any role in the church it should be strictly children's ministry and she should have male authority over her that she answers to for things like curriculum and doctrine that she teaches.

Paul also wrote in this same chapter that men are to "lift holy hands" when they pray. I've never hear a teaching requiring men to do this. Also, Paul ends that chapter with women being "saved" or "preserved" through childbirth, and I've never heard any professional Christians making rules around that. To me it's obvious that Paul did not want women discipling men. That would be problematic then, and likely now. Today's churches are structured like business corporations, with much the same functions and departments. I personally don't have a problem with a competent woman "staff" supervising other "staff" in a specific departmental role within a religious non-profit corporation. Especially if the role is essential and no competent men are to be found.

  • @jamescook5617

They can, but they shouldn't be.
The modern church worships feminism implicitly, it's hard to push back against this ever present idol.
Yet, for the sake of healthy marriages and right relationships for our children we must unapologetically advocate for men to be men and women to be women in the traditional roles which Scripture lays out. We need to stop qualifying the high calling of motherhood with shout-outs to career women. We need to stop encouraging people to follow their heart wherever it leads. Instead, seek blessings from working out the roles which are born of God's instruction rather than feminists of the sexual revolution or pragmatists who seek worldly possessions as somehow more important than the proper upbringing of children by a loving, God-fearing mother.
The absurdity of women in leadership positions was clearly illustrated by the woman chair person attempting to speak in a position of authority over Saddleback's ordination of women pastors. The committee was tasked with judging the proper role of women in the pastorate as practiced by Saddleback all the while contradicting the same principle in the committee itself.

i belong to a small local REFORMED church and started by a group of pp like 20 yrs ago when they were in their 20s, so we have the main Senior Pastor who started the church and also a woman preacher (who has the qualification from bible college) all these years. We also have female Deacons (aka "Deaconese"). Senior Pastor did explain as below and is this justifiable even that we are a small church of less than 150 in English congregation and about 400 in Chinese congregation.
""Regarding your other concern about women preachers, that is a valid concern, so it is important we clarify our position on this. We presume your concern arises from the reference to : "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man, she must be quiet." Yet, we need to consider the context of this verse. The word “teach” here in its root form refers to "doctrine". It is right in saying that because doctrinal teaching came from men, as in the Bible was revealed to men, not women. Apostles are all men. Women are not supposed to come out with doctrine, nor she should have authority over a man. So in our church, we do not let woman assume the role of becoming an elder or pastor, in positions where she makes critical decisions in the form of leadership.
Yet, we allow women to teach the word. This is simply taken from: "But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head" . Now, in this verse, women are allowed to prophesy, and in today’s term, prophesying is seen as teaching also, as we don't see there is a need to prophetic prophesying anymore in the New Testament. People who prophesies now teach through the word. Yet, the clause here is that she must have her head covered, which figuratively means to do it in a woman-like and submissive way instead of a man-like instructional way. In our church, only Preacher J is a woman preacher. And she does it with grace and gentleness. Yet, most of the teaching role in our church are done by men, which is mainly Pastor himself."

I'd like some thoughts (including yours Pastor Joel) on a situation that happened at a church gathering recently, just to see if I'm overreacting or not:
One of my male friends will be preaching soon on 1 Tim 2:9-15, and a lady suggested that he run his sermon past her to see if it may be offensive to women in it's presentation/tone (she said it wasn't to check his theology).
This made me angry, as to me this seems like coercion, control, giving prejudice and favoritism to women, and elevating a woman to basically have authority over a male, and a male preacher. It seems from verses like the ones below that men should preach with all the authority given to them from God, and that will involve at times rebuking sharply and publicly people (including women), false teachers, like "moderates", feminists, and those who teach the commandments of men, such as "thou shall be nice" as if they were the commandments of God.
    Am I overreacting?
Titus 2:15 (CSB) 15 Proclaim these things; encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.
    Titus 1:10-14 (CSB)
10 For there are many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from the circumcision party. 11 It is necessary to silence them; they are ruining entire households by teaching what they shouldn’t in order to get money dishonestly. 12 One of their very own prophets said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith 14 and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of people who reject the truth.
    1 Timothy 5:19-21 (CSB)
19 Don’t accept an accusation against an elder unless it is supported by two or three witnesses. 20 Publicly rebuke those who sin, so that the rest will be afraid. 21 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels to observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing out of favoritism.

John McArthur believes woman being deacons is a faithful handling of the texts, and I must say I have a hard time disagreeing with him. RC Sproul was supportive of woman deacons as well. It seems both from Scripture and common sense that there is an argument to made for it. I would not want a male deacon having to provide care for a female church member in certain circumstances such as physical care for them as an older widow in need of bathing and the like…far more fitting with all of Scripture in view for a woman to be doing such things and those are things that fit deacon ministry.
