This is no longer just making baits.. this has turned into making fine art! It’s actually insane the level of baits that you’ve been putting out lately
Sturgeon are in trouble mostly in European rivers due to overfishing and using them for caviar. Interestingly, it used to be custom for fishermen in Britain to offer sturgeon they'd caught to the Royal family. Amazing work, as ever
The columbia river system in b.c. and Washington used to have criticaly low amounts of sturgeon but the last 5 years or so you can no longer really bottom fish for trout and whitefish because all you catch is 3 foot sturgeon. Its a good sign and hopefully my kids can fish them in 15 years when numbers are good to open up catch n release
This might be too crazy, but you could try a Stingray lure - I think the only way would be to have a 3-piece lure with a flat oval centre piece and two semi-circle ‘wings’ either side. Might not be possible but would be very interesting :)
that would be really cool, like the floppy brass fin catfish lure or the jointed fin mooneye, but even more insane edit: or this one, I hadn't watched far enough to see the floppy fins when I commented this
This goes beyond being a lure, this is more like a work of art. What looks like really bland color as you put it is a beautiful transition and blend of colors in a flawless way. This is definitely one of my favorite lures you've done so far!
Here in germany, specifically in Bavaria we used to have native stergeons (sterlet) which you can no longer find in our river systems in (bavaria)there are still sturgeon in germany, but usually by the larger citys where most our main rivers pass through. But finding them close to the size yall have em, would be a 1 in every 20-30 years catch. Great build! Really enjoyed it
Thank you you inspired me to make my first lure (I’m 13). I watched tons of your videos for inspiration and to get the perfect formula, and it worked first try!
Most people have very specific talents, yours is obviously teaching, the way you break down the individual processes of each build you make, it's different from other builders, you have an ability to intellectually dismantle and observe each step of every process in each build, specially when it comes to painting, which is most definitely your strongest quality,,, Thanks!!!
Nice to hear Benjamin Todd and Matt Heckler in this video. Saw them play together back in October. Good music, good people, and good baits are what make this channel great.
I'm from Lewiston Idaho on the Snake River. Chunk of Northern Pike Minnow with Redman Chewing Tobacco tied around it is the best bait. I've caught a thousand of them!
Extra information because I can! Kaviar is specifically underdeveloped eggs, so it's not what comes out on its own, as those eggs are ready to be laid. To harvest the kaviar, the fish is caught and killed, the eggs cut out. This is why they are so heavily overfished in certain areas, mostly europe and asia. The slow reproduction rate with 20 years to mature and the target on egg laying females is what is putting them under. Many fish, including the sturgeon, can force air trough their gills to get some oxygen. Gills can get their oxygen from the air so long as the gills are wet enough, so that the oxygen in the air can exchange with the moisture from which the gills pull it. It's beneficial to do so if there's not enough oxygen in the water. Another beautiful lure, I always remain amazed at the work you do. The scutes look phenomenal!
It’s incredible how well you tolerate that tedious work and attention to detail. I don’t think there’s many people who can do that for a living. Watching that 5k dollar gator gill hit the water like a bowling ball hurt to watch! It’s crazy how you actually fish them. Appreciate your content!
Marriage rule in my house: No watching Marling baits without your spouse... so glad because this video is 15/10! I've missed the fun facts, and your floating self at the bottom took it over the top lol. Doggo shots added a point, but no little doing bike circles made you lose two. Thanks for the content.
Had an interesting idea for a bait today. It's not the first time someone has made something like this, but the bait is a fish (probably large mouth bass) chasing another smaller fish. I've seen some vintage baits that did this out of one block of wood, but I think it would be cool to have two separate baits connected by a leader. I realize you made a similar bait before (the chatter buddy), but if done right, you might be able to get other bass to follow it like they do when one is trying to eat. The front fish would esetualy have no action, but the chasing fish could have a joint and possibly have a great action.
The sturgeon bait is really beautiful. Some of the fancier ones become exploded rainbows with all the detail and colorshift. The large smooth patches mext to the beautifully-carved ridges were just amazing. It's nice to see you feel the freedom to experiment with video stuff. And it stays genuine, it doesn't matter what crazy things you try as long as it's you.
This is one of my favorite Marling creations. Sturgeon are so cool, and the thumbnail looked too good to be real. Totally awesome it is, and the bait turned out beautiful.
most members of the Acipenser genus are endangered which includes the bulk of the sturgeon, the shovelnose is not a member of that genus however another species in its genus called the Pallid Sturgeon is endangered in the U.S. and the caviar is going to be from species of the acipenser genus so dont try any roe you get from a shovelnose. Great video as usual Nate
to add to this, there are species of predatory sturgeon that have much larger mouths fixated towards the front of their heads, shovelnose are not one of those species and thats why they have the mouths on the bottom, like most of the "smaller sturgeon" they feed on scraps of animal material and insect larvae. the ones that are are mostly predatory would be from the Huso genus which is also the largest
They are definitely endangered overall. They’re heavily protected in northern idaho (where I live). Their numbers are a sad remanent of what they once were. Beautiful and protected fish. One of my favorites ever.
First "melk" and now scutes. Can't wait to see what happens when he gets to caramel. Besides that, cool lure. I think a soft plastic version would be fun.
It blows my mind how you've become so efficient that you're able to make a lure in a day from scratch. I've been making injection lures through cnc and sometimes it takes me over 30 iterations and months of work just to get them to swim right.
I really enjoy your work and content. Especially the fun facts that you give us about the fish your making or fishing for. Been watching your channel for years now
Very cool. I fish for stripers on the Saco River in Southern Maine and I know your bigger baits would definitely catch big fish here. We see and hear Atlantic Sturgeon coming out of the water regularly. Even if you only hear them you know it's a Sturgeon. Very informative videos, keep em coming.
Man you have come a long way in your lure making. The satisfaction of hand making a lure then using it and catching fish I cant imagine that feeling!!! Your attention to detail is amazing. Thank you for the awesome videos.
The fact that you snagged one amazes me, I've always heard that they are pretty darn rare so just over all impressed and if the tag doesn't tell you how rare these fish truly are idk what will haha
Everything you do is amazing man, and it's because you strive for greatness! And you have already made it to legend level man. No more second-guessing yourself! Just do what you feel is right, and your stuff will just keep getting better!
"scutes" is pronounced "skyewts"!
Hahaha yes
You could also say it as "scoots". At least, that's how I think of it to remember the word.
@chris p that's what I was going to say too. Like the scoots of an alligator.
@@chrisp7641 yep!!
Or just the word "cute" with an "s" sound in front.

Gotta say, loving the new fun facts style!

Hard bait center. Soft plastic wings. Jointed tail.
Be careful with the water level in the test tank. The heater will crack and brake if it isn’t submerged.

I hate the weather but I love winter time when the baits turn from fishing lures to BEAUTIFUL pieces of art. This is one of my favorites to date
That was awesome to see the sturgeon lure right next to a real sturgeon!
It's crazy seeing how much of a fine craftsman you've become over the years, these lures are becoming more and more beautiful
My favorite part of your videos is the paint job. Awesome baits you make

Love the green screen editing. Nice touch! Your channel is very enjoyable to watch! Awesome bait too!!!
I love that you made an aquarium out of the tank you used to test the buoyancy of your baits!
Hands down one of the best lures you’ve made. Top notch mate
I love the random baits. How about a Mini Bull Mahi Mahi. The colors would be alot of fun!
