Danny Lindahl , question about when Paige was talking about the wind. She said a left to right wind would potentially turn her disc in a roller so to give less angle. Isn’t that more of an issue if she had a right to left wind? She also says to give it more angle in a right to left wind? In my experience that seems to cause throwlers more times than not.
Three of the best tutorials I have seen on these shots. I think the real strength of the DD brand is that the players are all constantly training to be in front of the camera teaching the sport. I have been a corporate trainer and public education for close to 20 years and these men and women have all got the right skillset. So impressive. All three were great but Paige is a rockstar. Wishing these folks a long career as players, ambassadors, commentators, instructors, etc.
Hearing AJ talk about considering which part of the disc is exposed to the wind at different points in the flight and using that knowledge and a flex shot together to create shots is a great insight -thanks!
Thanks for mentioning the stability of what discs youre using instead of just saying the name of a DD disc and turning your video into a DD info commercial. Some do.., but not all your vids do that. Good job. :)
This is wonderful. It is saved so that I can review it periodically. One addition I would love to see is GRIP on how to do those shots, from each person's perspective.
This is a great video, Danny. Well-edited. All three are good, though I especially liked Paige's segment. Very strong. Really knew what points she wanted to make.
THANX All! I've always worked towards a consistent repetitive, flat shot and depended on disc stability for hyzer or flex to hyzer or pure flex. Now that I'm somewhat happy with that consistency this video showed me to incorporate angle to extend distance on that flex with angle on overstability like Perce and A.J.. I've just started laying downs rollers the last couple years and I greatly appreciate Erics' tips in a skill I seriously lack.
Paige Pierce is definitely qualified, we watched her GBO round 2 on hole 14 and she bombed a 500’+ shot and nearly hit the card in front of her lol. She may be small but she can crush longer than I can for sure. She is also amazing at rotating her feet and hips at the right time which reminds me a lot of a baseball/softball hitter with good form.
Next installment of this series absolutely needs to be about thumbers for medium approaches. (250 and in). One of the most versatile shots that can abuse heights and ground play moreso than any other shot.
My max distance line is like what Paige is talking about, except I use a very understable disc released on hyzer. It flips all the way over and glides for ages, and I use height to ensure that it finishes back straight at the end. The distance it covers on hyzer early is just added on to the flex line she's talking about, at the cost of accuracy. (For reference, this line was thrown exactly as described and measured with a rangefinder at 550' in competition a few weeks back) Definitely not a max course-distance shot, but for me that is simply a more stable hyzer-flip that only gets moderate turnover and doesn't need to have turn mitigated by height
I used to throw nothing but flex because of the crazy distance I got and then my pro buddy told me it wasn't a good idea... I think I will become AJ's biggest fan and get back to my flex, they were soooo fun to throw! I still respect my pro friend because I do need straight up hyzers and flip shots but I also like working back from the target alot more.
if your watching this and a new player trying to learn a flex shot make sure you have enough room on your left or right to be able to throw an anhizer and have it fade out at the end or you might hit a tree and your left with a difficult approach shot and have to scramble to try and save par.
Who's worst idea was to put flight cam on top of Paige's grip example at 1:35 ??? We saw that on the draft version that was part of the live stream ad. It was really useful tip and I came to see it again, but you put pic on pic on top of it. Pffft!
It depends on the wind and if you're going for a flex-shot or hyzer flip line. Bestdiscgolf (if I spelt the YT channel name right) has a video on stability vs wind (to;dw: understable discs for tailwinds and overstable ones for headwinds).
The wind does not get under or over the disc in crosswind. This is an illusion of relative frames of reference. In the ocean of air the disc is flying in, it's doing the same thing it would do at that airspeed as a calm day. It's just to the observer not moving with that ocean of air, it looks like is being pushed down because it's not making progress over the ground like we are used to seeing on calm days. This is not the same thing as the wind "pushing down" on the disc. That's an erroneous description of an illusion, not what is happening.
When compared to no wind, a disc in a crosswind will have different pressure on top of the flight plate and underside of the disc. If the "ocean of air" is moving to the side that creates more pressure on top of the flight plate, the disc won't fly as far when compared to no wind. That's what players mean by "Pushed". They mean they're manipulating the angle of the disc to take advantage of the wind to create slightly different areas of pressure when compared to no wind. The wind is obviously moving slower than the disc or the disc wouldn't be able to generate any lift. With a tailwind, the disc is going to have less wind resistance because it's moving slower relative to the wind so it will appear to be pushed when compared to no wind. In Physics of Flight I try to focus on practical advice for everyone rather than overly complicated descriptions. Does that help?
@@DannyLindahl the best thing to do would be understand what's happening correctly first, then figure out a way to simplify it without making stuff up that's not happening. The explanation about pressures in a crosswind is incorrect. But I agree with your point about useful vs. correct. In this case the model is wrong but it helps people do the right thing.
@@DannyLindahl if you've ever been on a river float trip, you can't feel the current if you can't touch the bottom because the inner tube is moving the same speed as the water, and differences in pressure from the upriver and downriver sides of the tube quickly equalized once your feet left the bottom and you began to float. It's not that the river keeps accelerating you down stream, you accelerate until your speed is the same as the river. Same with disc flight. The forces on the disc from the players hand quickly equibrilate with the air around it and the whole flight plays out in the local airmass the same way it would if it had been launched at the same angle and airspeed on a calm day. No difference in pressures on the disc top or bottom. It just looks different to an observer who is not moving with the air the disc is moving with
Nope, understable discs will give an S-curve flight but not considered a "flex shot" . Forcing an anhyzer with an over stable disc is the correct definition of a flex. Hope that clarifies
@@mckaymnm if you're throwing an understable disc on an anhyzer, its likely your throw will turn into a roller. A turn over and a flex are two completely different throws

She’s talking about turning her wrist and you’re showing a disc fly. I really wish you’d have shown what she’s talking about but I’m sure a comment pro will tell me
I am 52 and have the same problem. I started throwing Air plastic and it changed my game. The lighter weights really helped me achieve the same flight patterns.
If another disc golfer tells me the wind pushes a disc I'm going to lose my mind. The wind a human standing still on a tee pad is not the same as the relative airflow of an object doing 60 mph in an ocean of air that is moving relative to the ground.
I wouldn't say that for example Paige is "average" distance thrower... But let's say if Simon Lizotte would give some tips to throw big distance it wouldn't help any normal person who can't throw 80 mph shots.
@@ileko92uh yeah it would. Anyway, the best tips for distance are in dave dunipace's recent video. Full reachback does not matter, all about the whip. Which is why I don't have a full reachback but can throw 450+, same as simon and seppo and many others. reaching back does not generate power.
@@Syfiewow Yeah Dave had some great tips to consider. Some big throwers really use those hinges and others rely on the big reachback. Whatever works for you, then use it and practice it! Happy games and throws for all!

Wait, I thought hyzer flips were max distance…is a flex shot a further flight?
Awesome
When AJ talks about a cross wind, did he point the wrong way or are we reversing the terminology? Was this filmed in a mirror?
He's pointing from _his_ perspective, so for the viewers, it's mirrored.
