- Our drop bar bikepacking bike just got set-up with racks and panniers and more for upcominging bikepacking adventures.
We install it all on a bike with no rack mounts at all, and on a suspension fork as well! It's all made possible with Old Man Mountain and Robert Axle Project.

Great video. You may want to look at the Salsa Rack-Lock that replaces you seat clamp with a place to mount the top struts of your rear rack instead of the zip lock mount setup. Lastly I use kitchen garbage bags inside of my panniers to hold my stuff I don't want to get wet. It also makes it easier to pull the kitchen bag out and take it into your tent instead of the muddy/wet pannier. I learned this from motorcycle camping where you have to sometimes park away from your hotel or camp site. Keep up the great work.

I went for the OMM Divide rack for my 2011 Moots Mooto X-YBB. Because it was built as an XC MTB it lacks any mounts, and because of the mini-suspension of the seat stays and flexing chain stays I couldn’t mount to the seat post or clamp. AND because hydraulic brake line and shifter cable run on the top of each seat stay I had to get creative with the location of the plastic pucks. It ended up swell and I used it on the GDMBR this year (w/Ortlieb panniers). Tip for older MTB bikepacking: keep the load small/light in front, fill your frame bag, and balance the rear.
I got the Old Man Mountain rear rack on my Farley fatbike. I've loaded it heavy with big Arkel panniers, and it hasn't missed a beat.
I often put a narrower pannier on one side, it makes hike a biking much easier.
The Arkels pop off with a pull off the handle.
The thru axle is a great location for attaching racks as you're not adding much load to the bike frame; the weight goes straight into the hub. You should be able to use this even on carbon frames.
However, if you need to remove the wheel for whatever reason, you would have to take off the rack first.

It is really amazing how many options are available today to carry things. Sure, lots of bikes getting hard points again that had faded from the market. Then all these creative businesses coming up with alternatives. Goods stuff. (And yes that Salsa seatpost clamp is a great way to get an upper mount. Funnily enough it is their RECOMMENDED way on bikes like a Cutthroat which has a million mounts. The only downside is if you need to lower your post in the field. But with a dropper that becomes moot

Yes you did. Quite a good day! Man is my bike dusty though! Me too! I did the 60 version but did 70 after a big group took a wrong (uphill) turn.
Hope you had a great ride! Sorry I dashed away. I did hear someone say something but I thought it was “there is the guy the made my bike” so I did not stop. Then I wondered if it was there is Old Guy And A Bike but we were burning coal by then.

@@oldguyandabike 🤣 yeah, several of us conferred to not (as it turned out) miss the detour around what was apparently a severely damaged road. I also did the metric and learned that is harder than on the road 😉. But way better than last year where i showed up still sick (not infectious) and realized it wasn’t working at the first stop. Then managed to crash nicely on the way back 😢
