I am a 63+ racer and this video is a gem. It is refreshing that such an elite competitor shares his experiences frankly and openly. Thank you Ben and Pat for sharing this format. I am also going to comment on the Ben/Pat hour record video as I am really keen to attempt this feat also.
I was at the podiums for gravel nats with my girlfriend and she saw Pat talking with the women’s 55+ natty champ. She said “gawd damn, look at those two ageless wonders chatting about their next meeting at the fountain of youth.”
Thanks for your conversation with your friend Pat, Ben, and very cool of Giant to let him ride a Trek and talk about it, too. And by the way, if he is good with one big gravel race win, that sounds good for the rest of us in his age category. Probably best that he focus on his road and track success. 😀
This is the kind of elite athlete I will show to my teenage son. Pat is so humble but still has to be confident and aggressive in a race to be an elite competitor. Sharing his fluids in a race shows his level of sportsmanship.
First rate content, as always, Ben. Pat was on my course and after the race I talked with him and he is even more modest than he is fast, which is saying something. This made for such a wise, calm and rational discussion and def reflected how it was on the ground. Nice!
8 days out, first gravel race and the guy wins the Stars and Stripes for a 22nd time...... I think I've raced Pat before at Road Nats, although I'm 22 jerseys behind him.... LOL. Congrats.
Still a decent amount of hair & dying them. Works. Plus clean shaven as opposed to a beard. But on close-ups the features reveal his age. Physique of an elite athlete for sure. Inspiring (I’m 42)
Brilliant video. Thanks Ben and Pat. …my only critique, you guys make it sound so easy! …It would be awesome to see a series on the hard training that goes into making you guys so fast!
Wow, congrats to Pat. That’s eye watering power for 4 hours! I’d like to hear more about the bike, specifically if it would make a better double-duty road and gravel bike than the Checkpoint ( esp. after hearing 45 mm tires could fit).
I as in the same race as Pat. Ridonkulously fast and a mad scramble not to get dropped for over an hour. Not my idea of fun. At least RRs start off sedately and have tactics. Although I love Pat's reasons for feeding his breakmates - great tactically on top of being a gent.
At 24:00 ...Age group gravel racing makes so much more sense for the average racer.. rather than riding in a huge bunch and not even feel like you are racing , much less know WHO you are racing, or being able to mark the fast ones in your class. This should be something we all push for at these huge events. They certainly could give simple awards to the top three to five of each age group , either 5 or 10 year age groups. Everyone who pays top dollar to enter should be able to feel like they are really racing.. right now, at many races its only a small fraction of elite or pro riders having a true racing experience, and some of them aren't even themselves paying for their entries like the average rider always does. The Gunnison Grinder is going that direction in 2025. I raced it this year. The promoters and I discussed this and they told me they have decided to do age groups awards next year. Good for them! I hope to see a lot of Coloradoans support this race and others of such format next year whether it's the 30 mile, 60 mile, or 120 mile race they enter next September.
Pat has aged like a fine wine unlike myself who likes a fine whine... Anyway, all the best for a full and swift recovery Ben, may your wheels not have time to get dusty.
What a surprise! The guy chose the bike that looked like it would fit the best. He knows it's the athlete who wins or loses, not the bike (unless of course the bike breaks). But of course the bike BUSINESS spends $$millions on convincing people the opposite.
Pat isn't on Strava. Weird, right? He does a lot of of the standards: loops to the north, Lefthand/Lee, Flag. Nothing exceptional - just often at ludicrous speed.
Ben, Now that you’ve been screwed multiple times, a good goal would be to maintain weight or even lose a couple of pounds. You will likely lose muscle mass. Don’t replace the lost muscle mass with fat. Good luck!
Is Pat sponsored by a bike brand? Just curious as he seemed pretty reserved on the review of the bike. I do wish I had half the skill and fitness he does.
@@f1hotrod527 more than likely he thought it was good but couldn’t go on about it. High end bikes are all pretty similar, and not a lot to complain about.
