Old Guy And A Bike is about the celebration of cycling as a senior athlete. I bring my 35 years of experience as a mountain biker, road rider, and gravel bike lover as well as my two decades of reviewing and writing about cycling products to this channel as we ride, test, explore, and push ourselves to be the best we can be despite our age. It's not over yet. Just keep pedaling.
Are You The Invisible Cyclist? Being Seen While On The Road.
Cycling on public roads and paths has inherent dangers but can we we reduce the risk with some simple changes to our cycling setups?

Seeing The Elephant: 2024 Climb To Kaiser Bike Ride
I have rear lights, and front lights. Got hit by a car once, said I was in her way, even though she had a red light, I had a green light. Second time I was almost hit, when a car ran a stop sign, again said it was my fault for being in her way. As soon as people get behind the wheel of a car, they turn into instant morons.
The Bontrager lights you show also can be controlled by my Garmin Edge 1040.
Never joined the Johnny Cash cycling team ,always try to be as visible as possible. More frightened of cars in front of me than the ones behind.
I have to tell you, on Dec. 31 last year, I had my red strobe blinking, my bright neon yellow jersey and I got ran over. The onus will always be on the cyclist. The excuse always is I didn’t see you. However, at least when you get hit, you will know you did the best you could.
The Bontrager lights are awesome. The Ion also has a mode that goes from automatic blink to solid light when it gets dark. Great video, Granny Gear.
Good discussion on safety. As I do not happen to own cold weather bright yellow clothing, I will ride with a bright yellow construction vest over my cold weather clothing.
Visibility is about contrast with the enviroment - on a bright day black is very contrasty - at night it is invisible. In total darkness no color helps - lights and reflective is needed.
That suspension is WILD! AND the classic XTR group set?! That’s RAD!
The things from days long gone interesting
Are those the Hyalite's? I've got a set of the carbon Hyalite wheels on my single speed
i got 700 by 42 but i’d still try 650 for the fast acceleration
Good overall review. I live in Bend, OR and ride similar all arounds. I am wondering about the Pirelli Cinturato M in a 45. Seems like a lot of people ride them and are overall quite happy. They also make a H which is a bit less aggressive but may roll a bit faster.
I have not been on that tire as it seemed a bit aggressive in a soft soils tire way. But maybe not. I did try the H in a 40mm size but killed a tire on the first ride out and Pirelli never sent another one. It was pretty fast feeling on pavement...zoom zoom. gg
Thanks ! my YT Szepter has Resolutes in a 42 and I'm looking at alternatives in a 45 and trying to work out the compromises.
Exactly....compromises are just part of the game. making the right ones is the trick. gg
Vulpine looks very similar to Pathfinder
How do you rate these tires (slick center strip) compared to the Pirelli Cinturato gravel RC? I thought I’ve seen you review those and also quite liked them.
I did ride those and I liked them but they were the first 45 I remember riding so I want to circle back around and I will be re-riding them. I remember them as having very good cornering in loose conditions. SO they will be in this series. gg
@@oldguyandabike that would be great, for my local riding I would be looking at either a bit faster tire with a slick center or something with a little more grip, I am also considering going from a 40c to 45c. So your reviews/videos are very welcome.
How would that tire handle on a touring bike
What I know about touring bikes you could fit in a thimble, but I understand the priorities of touring is towards durability over anything else. I don't see this as 'that' tire. gg
You're finding how useless knobs are unless there's something softer than the rubber they're made from to dig into. And fatter is better. The 50 mm slicks on my drop-bar MTB don't feel slower than the 38 mm slicks on my gravel bikes.
Muppet
I think one of these handlebars will be in my future. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be using your link when I pull the trigger. 👍🏻
Nice! gg
Thanks for your great videos !
I do my best for Jerseymaid. gg
The Vulpine S 45 looks a lot like the Pathfinder Pro 47. I've been using the PP47 on i30mm rims at 26psi for my 165 pounds. What surprised me the most is that the PP47 provides lots of traction considering how little tread it has. I sometimes ride these tires on intermediate level single and they do surprisingly well. While they are not as good as the Rekon Race 2.4 XC tire on single track they do much better than expected. The trick to getting these tires to hook up well on single track is to run low pressures. They also roll very fast and quiet on pavement. I have to be careful on bike paths because pedestrians don't hear me coming.
That tire is in the wings waiting for some dirt...soon. gg
I have the same pp47's. I agree with what you say about them. I ran them with tube's for quite a while and was blown away how much better they were tubeless. Night and day. Rolls smooth, supple and quick.
This tire reminds me of the Specialized 2-Bliss 47mm tires I have on my e-gravel bike. They're okay on gravel, etc., but very quick on the pavement, which is fine, since most of my riding on this bike is on pavement.
Bottom line is knobs don't do much more than add noise and weight UNLESS the surface is soft enough for 'em to dig into. I ride my gravel bike(s) on ROADS. mostly paved. So slicks make sense. Rene Herse' are nice but far from cheap so Panaracer Gravel King slicks are getting the nod more recently. 38 mm at 40 psi seems to work very well for me.
Some of my favorite tires have similar "blockage" for here in the dry foothills of sacramento. Honestly, looks like a perfect design for reasonable gravel riding, but I bet you could lose traction on steep loose climbs, and of course if you send it too hard in dry corners.
You know I think that is likely if you stand and transfer a lot of weight forward. Typically I am sitting forward in that scenario. gg
Really broad shouldered, 44cm Easton works on road and gravel for me.
Redshift makes great quality products for the people.
Just found this - thank you. I ride a steel bike on Hunt Four Season wheels - my commute is going to be off road so looking to get another Hunt wheelset so I can have 32s for the club rides and 40s for the off road.
My two sets of the 4 Season wheels have been solid and good value wheels. No complaints. gg
I HATE the silly wide/flared bars!!! Yanked a set of FSA K-Wing carbon bars off and replaced 'em with a standard aluminum road bar in 40 cm. Don't get the entire riser idea either...is it all about slamming the stem but making it higher via risers? Don't get the handlebar bag thing either...those used to be only for "freds". OTOH I like RedShift's stem...just enough to feel like you let out some air pressure in your front tire.
I will state the obvious...The bars make sense for places where the width and wrist angle supports a higher level of control in faster and technical situations. Extra rise is all about getting the handlebar into a place where it is comfortable for the rider without having to flip stems and max out spacers. Bar bags are aero nightmares but are very functional for carrying stuff. gg
@oldguyandabike, i saw these raised bars and i cannot decide what I think of them. I am not flexible (can hardly bend over and go further than my patellas without bending my knees) so, these bars could be for me but, for esthetic reason, i leave a longer steer tube with a standard stem. Would the advantage be a shorter steer tube (and shorter stem) to produce a more constrained assembly?
I think the advantage would be getting the bar where it 'needs' to be on. abide with no more adjustability like a pre-cut steerer, low stack bike (you reading this, Surly?), etc, and likely will have more appeal for casual riders or bike packers, etc. It's is not for everyone (it's not for me), obviously, but for those who want or need it, it is nice to have. On a recent build for Mrs. Grannygear, I was right at the limit of having her bar top where she likes it...and I had to use a 15mm rise bar to do that, flipped stem, and maxed out spacers. I could have used a 50mm rise bar with a cut steerer and few spacers, but at the time the width and flare were not in the marketplace. Now they are. But actually, 50mms might have been too much rise. But 20mms would have been welcome Personally I have been lowering my handlebars over time, not raising them.. gg
Helpful info again, as usual.
BON-TRAG-ER, it's not French. TRAG sounds like DRAG. As far as I know Keith is an American MTB guy who sold his soul to Trek awhile back.
I just ticked over 13,000 miles on my ADHX in a large. Love it. At 64, i run a 46/33 with either a 10-33 or 10-36 cassette. I also run either 32mm 5000Str's or 35mm GK Slicks depending on time of the year in terms of my fitness, not based on weather. The 32's measure 34mm and the 35's measure 38mm on my Zipp's. Only issue I have with Time is the headset bearing interface. Not sure if its a frame issue (top headset bearing retainer to low in the headset) or a headset bearing being thin (7mm vs 8mm tall), but the headset requires 4 split spacer shims to allow for proper compression of the top cap. I think this is either due to the top bearing not being tall enough or the bearing split spacer ring not being tall enough. Either way, it ends up being additional steel which ends up with a little rust. Also when my bike was built up, because so many spacer shims were required to make the top cap compress properly, I think the shop (Wrench Science) left out the thin rubber seal/o-ring from the bottom of the Deda Superbox top cover. When I swap over to the new Red levers, I'll replace the bearings with Enduro solid lube bearings and put the seal/o-ring back in. FYI - I took an expensive gamble and tried the Specialized Mirror Romin saddle - love it, best saddle I've ever ridden in 40 years.
At the time of my build, Enduro did not make a HS that was compatible to that frame so look into that. I do not recall the dimensions, but there are multiple 'standards' and the Deda HS is one and the Enduro Bearing one is the other although it is a minuscule difference in dimensions (OD IIRC). gg
Love the 47c pathfinders. Definitely feel more like a 45 and less like a 50 though
Oh...good to know. Thanks. gg
Have you ever put any miles on Rene Herse tires? With the variety of tires that you've sampled, would be interesting to get your thoughts and comparisons on them.
My only experience with them was not a good one and they handled it a bit poorly, I think. So, not a fan based on that, but of all the brands I hear mentioned that are a pain in the butt for tubeless, these seem to rise to the top of the conversation. Maybe suppleness is not the ultimate goal in a tire. gg
A lot to look forward to, thanks for the quality video’s not to be missed
I love their slicks! 700 X 38 mm on the gravel bikes and 26 X 50 mm on my "Super Gravel Monster" Not cheap, but the ride quality is superb. I run 'em with old-time, but lightweight butyl tubes and couldn't be happier. Panaracer Gravel King slicks are pretty good too, especially for the lower cost.
Take care, man! Looking forward to all that’s coming up!
Redshift looks like they are sort of emulating the Jones bar.
Nice video Jerry, I might pick one of these up
I like to ride alone with my thoughts but it’s safer to ride in a group. Glad to hear your back is better.
Lots of ‘petite richard’ energy in groups.. solo baby.
Time can make frame do as light as they wish, TIME Alpe d'huez 01 is 750g frame (racing and super stiff), Alpe d'huez 2023 is 950g (endurance and very comfortable).
All of this rings true about riding alone. But I wonder if it might be nice to occasionally ride with someone faster that may push you a bit. (I certainly don’t push myself!). It also is probably a good idea to ride with someone while on a tour or bikepacking. Nice post!
Indeed. And as I mentioned, there are many, many, good reasons why riding in a group is great! maybe one day I'll toss out another video on the flip side of riding alone. gg
The variety of textures in the kislux pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
How much water did you end up carrying with you for the whole route?
I don't really recall, but it so depends on the heat. If it is hot, for me, at least 4 bottles. If not, then less. gg
I think I've seen some videos where you talked about the long finger gloves you wear, but have you mentioned the sun sleeves? I assume that is what the long sleeves you have on. I've been contemplating them recently and wondering how much hotter it is to ride in them? Lots of folks say using a wicking base layer is good even in the summer, but I find them to be hot in the summer so I'm wondering if the sun sleeves are similar. Thanks!
These are from Pearl Izumi and I have a pair for road and for gravel. I like the light coverage for warmth and I can ride in them even on hotter days. if it is too hot for them, I am not wanting to ride anyway. They save on sunscreen applications too. I think that in very humid areas, base layers and sleeves like this are less effective as they do not dry out and the wicking just comes to an end. But for my dry climate they are staple item for me. gg
@@oldguyandabike Thanks for the info! You are correct that here in New England the humidity makes base layers (and probably sun sleeves) not work very well.
I remember, "The cone of silence". I also remember it almost never worked properly! 🙂
Started riding mt bikes 30+ years ago, often on my own, occasionally with a few other folks. About 25 years ago I got a recumbent for on the road (and commuting). Being a slower rider and the 'alternative' pace of the recumbent (much like a tandem, slower uphill and faster down) I never did get in with group rides on the road. I've tried a couple group rides in the last few years with the recumbent and its just a mess, so on my own. And now the last few years getting into the gravel side of things (and back into mtb) I'm still by myself. Mostly for my own pace and my own routes, but also because when it is a route that's off in the middle of nowhere, that's where I really DO want to be on my own. Oh, and one thing I do enjoy from your videos is trying to to figure out where you are riding from bits that I recognize. I lived in Ventura for ~5 years, worked in Ojai. I think I recognized some of the early roads today from the Piru TT course. (is that still going?)
@@Zyzzyx42 actually, yes the TT is still going on and they were doing it that day but that part was left on the ‘cutting room floor’ so to speak. I went all the way to Santa Paula and was considering going into Ojai and then down the path to the beach but it was getting hot inland. gg
@@oldguyandabike yeah, the temp differences there are.. curious. I used to have a great bike commute to Ojai. Ride two blocks from home and get on the bus, get off right in front of my work. Then ride home with a downhill and then a tailwind.
Chief, I demand the cone of silence. No Max, not the cone. And then Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road by Loudon Wainwright III. You're taking me back to my youth.
@@thomaskuhn6541 it’s just the way my brain works. gg
If I had to ride with a group, I would have only gotten out 9 times this year.
Yes...there is that! #9. Let's ride again, Mr. Jay. gg
As an even older guy on a bike, I completely agree with you on riding solo.
Thanks. Enjoy your channel! This popped up the morning as I was trying to decide between hurrying to make a club ride or not. I’m now about to head out solo! 😊
Flat alley! Haha! We have a few of those too!
All the things you stated ring true. It’s also why prefer to travel alone. I would only add that you can also pick the day and time when you ride solo. I can’t ride with my local group because I’m at church when they ride. So I ride after church or on another day. Great video.
